Time after time I have the need to come back to this beautiful rendition, from a personal standing, this is the best version of this love duet in history, words are not enough to describe such beauty
This crescendo is legendary and timeless... I believe this is the most dramatic, emotive and divine music from any opera, with Turandot and Tosca areas a close second and third... It's like angels are singing. I literally get palpitations every time I hear this aria. The passion between Alagna and Gheorghiu jumps right through my screen and into my room... It feels like they are letting us have a secret look into their infinately intense love affair.
Boheme was my first favorite because it's so musical, and Turnadot was my last favorite because it is such a spectacle, but Butterfly has both the music and the drama.
It is obviously impossible to objectively rank "most beautiful," but this particular staged segment from 'Butterfly' is clearly of the first rank and would absolutely have to be included in any such ranking at or near the very top. Gheorghiu and Alagna acted and sang a masterpiece here. I always especially enjoy and appreciate Gheorghiu's work, although Mirella Freni and one or two others from the past come to mind as well. Everyone likes to compare sopranos to Maria Callas, but to my ear, Callas couldn't hold a candle to a lot of modern sopranos, but then the art of the soprano has changed a lot since Callas' time. If you also like Gheorghiu, give a listen to her performance in "La Rondine," a seldom-performed Puccini, though a wonderful one (there are DVD's of it available). As for Puccini's "best opera" or "most beautiful opera" so much of Puccini's opera music and drama comes readily to mind. There are some wonderful duets in "Tosca" and certain "La Boheme" doesn't disappoint, particularly in the 3rd act. And don't forget probably the most-performed (though "Un Bel Di" from "Butterfly" comes close) aria of all by Puccini, "O Mio Babbino Caro" from Gianni Schicci. Yes it's a comic opera but that particular aria is truly wonderful.
If they were married at this time, their rank as a power couple was undeniable. After their split, this would have been impossible. Nasty divorce. So sad.
Roberto Alagna is wonderful here. Angela Gheorghiu should have lightened her voice a bit, but her execution is totally acceptable, just not scrumptious like Caballe's, Tebaldi's or even Moffo's.
The applause was not enough for this duet should have been a standing ovation my opinion. Bravo the complete performance

The most beautiful opera ever written. Although Puccini has a lot of competition with his other operas!
