Love this film. The staging is magnificent and the contrast between cold blue of Castel sant'Angelo and Tosca in flame red is stunning yet already so sad because you feel the desolation of Cavaradossi. He knows he will die.
Alagna and Gheorghiu are perfection and those lyrics are just liquid gold in their love duet. My favourite Tosca of all time.

I love the performance but nobody discussing the opera seems to mention Cavardossi's flaws. He hides an escaped political prisoner then lies to Scarpia about having done so despite the evidence which Scarpia (admittedly the arch villain) says he has. He winds up tortured, sentenced to death and his girlfriend is thus at Scarpia's mercy - and we all know what that b*stars wants. Doesn't his mule-headed idealism result in his death and Tosca's even if she has stabbed Scarpia to death?
