Crazy suggestion: give the footage to your followers for an edit competition, then see who comes up with a better story in the edit.
Sometimes we are in problems that we can't see solutions to, but others around us might find one.
I am highly interested in editing this for free.99

I've had some terrible stories as well. My favorite one is when my client got to the jail in the middle of the editing process and asked me to send the money back and forget about the music video. I'm gonna collect some interesting moments and share them one day on my channel. Experience and wisdom are everything. Thanks for the video

Keep your head up man! We’ve all been there. Try to get back to it in a while and your view on it will have significantly changed. Then try to see what other story is hiding in there and what you might need to add (shooting wise) to make it work. We always have the saying: a film is made 3 times, first in writing, then in shoot and finally in edit. Goodluck!

I learned so much from this video. No so much the technical aspect (a lot of it is over my head) but the fact that so much was learned and experienced in a project that some would consider (incorrectly) a failure. Reminds me that perfection is not the goal, PROGRESS is the goal.

  • @henryhodge2445
    @henryhodge2445 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I've had a few horror stories. One in particular is when I trusted the wrong crew members who didn't do a great job & the client had hidden expectation that weren't communicated that was revealed after shooting. The client didn't pay the remaining amount & the video never made it out of post. In the end I take accountability of trusting people not right for the project & making sure that the client signs off on everything, even the storybaord (we did have a normal contract). Especially when it comes to musicians, you never know, and when it rains it pours with complications.

Thanks for being so forthcoming with things when they don't go right. Lessons learned from mistakes are the easiest ones to remember. ;) YES!! Lighting is so incredibly important, and having a team you can tell "I'd like this kinda look with that kinda mood" and they bring it, and say "What do you think," and sure enough, there it is. Lately I've been getting a lot of work to do lighting (I do everything), and it's enabled me to learn a lot. Besides watching more videos on lighting the experience on other people's set is invaluable. This will help me even more as a DP. I've found I want to shoot indoor daytime scenes at night because when it is all artificial light I have total control over the light for the whole scene. The angle of the sun never changes, and thus the shadows and angles of light stay consistent through the whole scene, no matter how long it takes to shoot. Also, how many times have clouds ruined your lighting? This doesn't happen at night when all the "daylight" coming into the set is your own lights.

Fascinating to hear, both on the aspects that were valuable and where the project didn't meet expectations and why not. And also what did really work. Great to get a sense of what is involved in a project like this, and to see plenty of footage of the production process. Appreciate the transparent sharing of how it felt to decide to shelve the project. I found watching this video very interesting and helpful.

Can I please get your opinion on something? I've seen so many people rave about how amazing the Sony G master 24mm wide angle lens is, but I don't recall seeing anyone talk about the G master 35mm. And I have a feeling a 35mm is going to work better for my needs. I just got my A7IV and want to get a really good lens, but it's going to be my only really good lens for the time being so I want to make sure it's going to be versatile enough for what I need. I get occasional paid gigs doing birthday parties, family photos, etc. but I don't go searching for jobs so it's pretty rare. My main need is to start filming music videos for my own music.
Can I get away with using the 24mm to do all my performance shots and b roll for rap music videos? Or am I right that a 35mm would do way better? And have you heard anything on the 35mm G master? It's just as expensive as the 24mm, so I'm hoping it is just as good.
    Thanks!

Set backs happen and sometimes projects fall through which sucks. As someone who works crew it gets frustrating putting in time and effort and usually failed projects are usually only worth it for like the above the line type people because they get the "oh look at me doing dope stuff making money doing my passion" type of content for themselves. No shade or anything but it gets a little demoralizing when your crew carrying the team on your back and sometimes paid very little if anything 😅
Something to think about for all directors and producers out there, you have hope riding on your shoulders 🙌🏽

I have a similar story in a lot of ways, this just gave me the push to finish shooting the story telling portion of the video and talk about how my music video shoot fell apart after I had already shot everything. Basically things were rushed, I hired a bad AC, and the client never paid me because he couldn’t afford to finish mixing the songs and so no music videos came out of that busy week of shooting.

I had similar experience shooting a music video recently so it feels good that I’m not alone! Pulled off some small miracles to shoot a music video but it just WASNT cohesive when looking at it from the edit.

Sorry this happened to you man, but I’m glad you showed this mistake to the world for education. I respect it.

I am so curious to see how it turned out I am sure most people who watch it will go ohh that's very cool and wouldn't even notice whatever it is you thought you missed haha 🤔

We all take L's. But they are just lessons. It sucks to lose the story and throw it away. But it only makes you better for the next one.

Multi multi location days can be nuts, sorry to hear that you got upside down on it. Maybe a clip or two could still be used as bite-sized content, if the artist and you are cool with that?
Sounds like the painful lesson here is “board-out the shoot, and shoot the boards.“

    Hey @YCImaging,
Could it be interesting to release this footage for people to play with? I for example would love to colorgrade this footage. You could even give the footage to people for a small fee and recoup some of that 15k ;)
