I debated on putting this out, because i've already went back and CRUSHED the music video! The Z9 held up incredibly, great AF, incredible colors out of camera, crisp quality.
It's important that I show when things do go wrong tho, so enjoy! Keep it pushing.

I like that you released this because it helps out those videographers that get crushed when something doesn’t go right. Watching this just reminded why I always bring lighting no matter what. I’ve been in scenarios in my early years where I didn’t because it was daylight and ended up somewhere I needed them. Dope release!

100%! I brought lights for this shoot, but I only brought lights for keying, this space was wayyyyy too big for us to be able to really light it and show the scale. We needed the sun.

Just recently shot a commercial, just to realise that I need to work on storytelling more. And listening to my customer being disappointed in the results can be very frustrating. But it's like a kick to wake up and understand that it's time to level up and be more prepared and conscious with the way I shoot. Failures are important for growth. If anyone reading this, DONT EVER GIVE UP! Everyone has a bad day sometimes! Keep going and thanks for sharing.

Worst failure to date was definitely the time my Rode Wireless Go (I) kept having dropouts without me being able to monitor the audio while on two cams simultaneously. In the end, there was no way around shooting the whole thing again. Thanks for the video, there's something refreshing about knowing that other people also fail from time to time ;)

Having been a musician learning that redundancy is essential, having two of everything has saved my ass from public humiliation regarding musical equipment. Having recorded my band several times, I've needed more than just one mic. Having my Zoom Q2n backed up with a Zoom H1n was good insurance. In some cases, the b/u H1n sounded better than the Q2n.

One of the worst failures I was involved with was the time we blew up an old soda bottling plant, called mis-roll which caused our most important high-speed camera to miss the explosion completely.
There's all kinds of things that could go wrong and I'm glad you released this video. I hope the biggest takeaway for you was that you needed to be prepared for the shoot. I think getting a new camera and taking out on a critical shoot without fully understanding how to operate the camera and whether or not it will integrate with your support gear is the recipe for disaster. Glad to see that you were able to reshoot and get it done.

Last shoot was not starting the digital recorder along with the 2 cameras (plus cell phones) during the performance and having to rely on camera mics. So basically the camera did not fail... it was user error. This makes sense because it's important to understand that when jumping to a new system you must practice. Weather not being right is understood, but where were your video lights at? I would have used 4 to 6 constant lights with modifiers. Being in business for 26 years, I have not showed up to a project without lighting in like 25 years, but that is just me. :) Good fail because you learned what steps to take and the fact that the Z9 is a super capable camera, it's a monster and I love it. But then again, I have been a Nikon shooter for 26 years, the length of my career. All the best.

Not really a big mistake but one that still bothers me. I was assisting on a wedding and we were shooting with the newlyweds. Bride wants a specific shot so I was in charge of that (why doesn't really matter), turns out it wasn't that easy to get the shot. I tried to move everybody to get it 3 or 4 times, until the bride seemed a little pissed of so I just said yep got it. Whilst editing my boss approaches me and asks me why I didn't get the shot. Still bothers me that I didn't correct everybody till I got the shot. But what Niki Lauda once said: "Winning is one thing, but out of losing I always learned more for the future. So I got stronger from losing."

I directed a film this past May. Up until we were about to shoot. We had to find new actors and new location. During the week of production our DP got COVID. Our PA had to drop out. I got maybe 2hrs of sleep each night until the end. Good thing. Found new location. Found new actors. Our AC filled in for our DP. Our AC now DP found another PA and after the production ended. I got sleep 😂. That's only half of how things went. Appreciate the content. My heart when you said all of the things that didn't go right with the shoot 😂. But that's how it goes sometimes.

More than once I've spent hours editing something with a lot of their plugins involved, only to not be able to export it, because it would crash before the export would be done and kill the export. Because of recent events I had to pick up a backup camera on a budget; the 5D mk 2. I'm primarily photo but some jobs ask for video of which I'm too scared to say no out of fear of losing a job entirely. In any case, for the video I set up the 5D2 on a tripod as my B camera and my 6D as the primary. Thinking 5D video would be the same... what I didn't know is that the 5D (if someone could please tell me how to fix this) in video seems to be auto exposure, and my B camera was greatly underexposed. Had to scrap 90% of the video... but the photos turned out well!

you should change the settings. i am sure there is option to set manual exposure on 5d mk2

You can reverse the focusing directions on the Nikon Mirrorless in the settings. I hope you get to use a Z9 for another video!

If you have any more questions about nikon cameras for video, I would be happy to help! I don't have a Z9 but I regularly push my Z6II as high as possible!

I learned more from this video than any of your other ones. Doesn’t sound like a fail to me. When a lesson is learned there was no failure.

Hey, Thanks for the video. I am on Monterey M1 With FCPX 10.6.3 and for some odd reason my MotionVFX plugins seem to give the Red frame error after 10-20 minutes using them or copying an effect again, If I restart FCPX they work fine again but soon after editing a few minutes they give me the Red frame error again and again when scrolling over them after a while. Does anybody else have this problem? I mainly use Music Video effects which are dope, but for some reason I keep having this problem. Any suggestions? I have "reinstalled" them several times, restarted FCPX and computer but still have this problem.... Arrrrg I have also trashed FCPX preferences several times as well but still have the problem... SO frustrating
