    Now that some of the perennial door mats of the NFL seem to become good (like the Lions or the Jets), there's this team where it feels like they've been on the cusp of getting shit done for long stretches of time with little breaks in between, yet something always seems to happen to screw it all up. I remember somewhat recently when I listened to the PFF podcast, and they also said something about the Chargers to the tune of the perennial question being whether this is the year for them, they have tons of potential, and then all their key players get hurt and they come up short AGAIN. I feel sorry for Chargers fans in that regard. The constant feeling of being so damn close, yet so far away.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blame pundits/media for constantly playing that narrative for the fans to eat up and not seeing *WHY* their team is so far away. Injuries are a thing but so are depth charts. Teams who survive the regular season well to play in the postseason do so with having a versatile roster. As good as Staley is on defensive play calling and design, he is also stubborn where he sets himself up for better offense/OC/play callers to dunk on him. Its funny how some blame was deflected to Herbert in the playoff game when the Chargers offense in the 2nd half in terms of how they moved the ball was absolutely atrocious. Let alone the defense that can't hang with Trevor and Dougie P on a hot stretch. And obviously having Joe Lombardi sabotage Herbert for like 2 straight seasons throwing curl/stick routes or wack bubble screens on 3rd and medium was a relationship that got old real fast. Has nothing particularly to do with not having enough vertical threats since as Brett has noted, Steichen as the OC (years before) challenged Herbert to throw deep even with Williams and Allen. This is a team that some folks championed as real when they were pretty fraudulent to begin with. Maybe that goes away when Staley gets canned.

      It could be said that on defense, he's still lacking key pieces to realize how he can play consistently great defense. His D-line is okay, he's trying to get a full season from Bosa, Mack is on the decline, his linebackers don't really play coverage (though Kendricks could solve that), JC Jackson may be looking like a bum pick up and Derwin James Jr. is kinda overrated in his job at being a TE eraser. Since he can't erase the ones that matter. But Staley as a defensive play caller is also not consistent. He has great genius looks like the Dolphins game where he got his corners to press the Fins WRs and show blitz looks to Tua so he couldn't play in tempo. But his game management is relatively inconsistent and his inability to have a staff that doesn't sabotage Herbert is going to get him canned. Plus Lou Anarumo (Bengals DC) has defensively handled the Chiefs in recent years better than Staley has handled them. Or at least against elite QBs for that matter.

They can’t afford to get decimated again. 2nd is consistentancy. Injuries plays a part of it. Justin Herbert having broken ribs for 10 weeks didn’t help them. Joe Lombardi’s short passing offense didn’t help anyone. If they want to at least go to the playoffs with this tough schedule, it’s gonna come down to depth because injuries happen it’s the NFL. You have to admit that owners and general managers also matter. Example, the good owner would know when to fire general managers, and general managers know when to fire and hire a coach. This has been the Achilles’ heel of the chargers. We could have easily hired Andy Reid instead of Mike McCoy. That would have changed everything. Thank you for a great show.

Give someone else a chance at his position, it couldn't be any worse and maybe someone else will develop better than Murray. It's been 4 years and he's probably worse than when he was drafted with a first round pick.

    Lombardi and Moore aren’t too unlike, there’s just two things. Lombardi was terrible at in game adjustments, he was very smart and new how to gameplan throughout the week leading up to the game, but once the D threw that counter punch he had nothing. And Moore commits to the run more, yes he might bomb it deep more than Lombardi, but Lombardi couldn’t establish the run and get chunk plays from play action cuz he never committed to it.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what matters most with Moore is that in comparison to Lombardi, he will threaten deep with Herbert using his already prerequisite skill. He has a cannon and his reads are fast enough to get to that deep threat before the defense gets a leg up. Whereas Lombardi run design wasn't efficient, forced it constantly on early downs and put the pass game in a constant tension of 3rd and mid/long where his answer were these comeback routes that never went beyond the sticks. Though one thing to watch out is that Moore also has a penchant for short routes when he's in a pinch and will challenge Herbert's ability to throw into tight windows to get back into first downs. Which late into the season last year was both a strength and a weakness to Dak's passing game. It got too predictable and defenses who were willing to wait could jump on that situation with Dak to get a key takeaway.

    This is definitely the team that has been the biggest underachiever for the last two or three years. Maybe you throw them in there with the ravens as pretty good regular-season teams that can't win a playoff game to save their life. They become very inconsistent on defense and either don't make the playoffs or lose the first game immediately. I don't know why they seem to underachieve every year but there's no real reason to think that it's going to stop. They are a second-tier AFC team and they'll need to do a lot of different things to get up there with Cincinnati, Buffalo and Kansas City. I'm not sure I see a path for them to the playoffs because the AFC North might be prettystrong.😊 I think it's 50/50 whether they're going to be playing late in the year.

    I still remember in Lombardi's first interview he said if you can score 24 points on average you win.
    And then I knew this guy is a prick
    In the first season everytime they had 24 points they stop throwing and started running into walls like they were running a lot but not only in games where it was working but also when you have 3 and outs the 4rth drive they would still run it ...
    And the season after that changed to 27 points that was when the offense just dropped of because suddenly apparently it's good to call bad offense. that is also why they lost so maybe games in the second half and last quarter.
    It's because Justin often had those 24-27 points early in the third quarter. And that gave the opponents plenty time to catch up especially if you can't run the ball if your one dimensional it's so bad.

Especially when he gets Herbert passing on 3rd and mid/long because Lombardi spent his early downs trying to get Ekeler to grind out yards. Even if Herbert didn't have a speed threat, his arm and accuracy (watch the Chiefs game where he threw an absolute dime deep at the middle to one of his guys) as well as his ability to get his reads can threaten that he can go deep *AND* make them. The problem is Lombardi doesn't believe it and would rather save those key opportunities on 3rd and long passing downs. And would rather spend early downs dinking or having Ekeler grind out miniscule yards. Steichen when he was OC had Herbert throwing deep even to the same receiver group without a speedster. Its because Steichen isn't afraid to give 9 routes to his cannon armed guys.
