haha I didn't expect number 4 but thats so true! One time I was crying my eyes out on the train and this sweet young woman next to me gave me a pocket pack of tissues to dry my tears and its a kind gesture I will always remember. Us New Yorkers have the stereotype of being mean and minding our own business with these sorts of things but in reality most of us are kind and have each others back. Awesome video Erika!

I had a college professor who always said 'go before you're ready' and it has helped me SO MUCH. I wasn't ready to start a youtube channel and I just hit 300 subs today! Thanks for this Erica!

As a New Yorker, who left at 21 (I’m 64 now)and never returned except for a few short visits it made me so happy and proud that you also love and “understand” New York. Not everyone gets it but glad you do. I would love it (since I left at such a young age) if you could show us what some of the hot spots are and show us what makes each neighborhood different and special. I don’t really know Soho, Noho, the meat packing district, Harlem, and the village, etc. are each all about.

Just found your channel, because I have a frightening affinity for this city. One of my long-term goals is to migrate to this state once I complete my BSN. I visited my aunt here last year who happens to be a nurse, so I can check out her workplace hoping to find connections in her job and it was one of the best things I've done. I literally get goosebumps just thinking about this place.

This could apply to moving to any big city (you have never lived in before). I moved to London and felt all the same stuff. In the end it's all about opening up and talking to different people. Be yourself, be shrewd but just be open to living a new life!

I LOVE NYC! It’s he only place I’ve ever been to that I’ve been sad to leave: every single time! I live near San Francisco and at least I can get a mini taste of it close to home. Still, NYC is a beautiful beast of its own!

GREAT VIDEO , Iam a gay man originally from Haiti and I LOVE your videos and the type of person you are . You are a good person . Iv been living in NYC for 17 years ,What you said about the city Erika are true , I would also add that NYC is not only Manhattan , Queens , Staten Island , Brooklyn , and Bronx all have great things to see and new things you can learn, and they are all diverse with all type of people. Never stay in one Borough , take trips to the other boroughs and you'll learn new stuffs. Also rent is less expensive in the other boroughs than Manhattan and you can get more spaces but you'll haave less amenities compare to Manhattan,

I.DON'T.KNOW.WHY.I.AM.WATCHING.THIS I LIVE IN COSTA RICA, oh God, this is so good btw, I've lived in London (when I was 19) and Los Angeles (this year, i'm now 24) and I agree with most of these, the only thing that never happened to me was the mice or the cucarachas (I don't remember how to write it haha) I've had good and bad experiences in both places but i have a few of the best moments of my life and I've learned so much from the good and the bad. For the life experiences, I'm a makeup artist and also a PR newbie (I graduated but haven't worked that much) In London I went to school (makeup school) and worked for 7 months but in LA i was only able to go to school and not work because of the visa and blah blah, anyway after a traumatic experience, I decided the best thing for me would be to return home, heal and move on. I've applied to like 25 jobs in differents companies but most of them are situated in New York, if I actually get to experience New York and live there, this will come very handy haha, also the life lessons are THE BIGGEST THING and the most important things when living in another country!

Tip no. 11, do not eat pizza with a knife and fork. Properly fold in half :) Don’t forget the other boroughs, Park Slope for the gorgeous brownstones along beautiful Prospect Park and excellent restaurants. The Promenade in Brooklyn Heights, Grimaldi’s in DUMBO etc. Feel better.

Hey Lorrie, my wife used to live in Brooklyn Heights on Joralemon street. Was a great restaurant named Capulet's (on Montague street) and the BEST pizza is at Totonno's in Coney Island. I lived in Bay Ridge. Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst are nice too.

Very nice area. Haven't been to Capulet but have been to Totonno's, and I agree, their Pizza is excellent. This is a site you and others might enjoy. Lots of history. forgotten-ny.com/

Thanks for the heads up Lorrie. Capulet's was there in the 1970's and 80's. Ain't sure if it's still there. It was on Montague street between Clinton and Henry. Other restaurants there were; Aesop's Fables, Circles Cafe and J.B.Callahan's, on Remsen st. just up from Court street. I will check out that site, I miss my Brooklyn.

I always eat pizza or burgers with a knife and fork - can't bear sticky, gooey fingers, and I Googled the Park Slope Brownstones, and they look awful. Scarey, and like something from the Addams Family!

If you're a recent graduate you can get a J1 Visa for 1 year. If you're not a graduate, or want to stay any longer than 1 year, you're best option is to find a company to sponsor you for a H1B visa (this is a lottery type visa and you have a 1 in 3 chance of being selected) or prove you're a person of extraordinary talent and get an O1 visa (this is very tricky to do unless you're well renowned in your field). Basically, it's very difficult and costly. I've lived in the US for almost 3 years and visas are the bane of my life. it's cost me upwards of $10,000 so far.

Hey Retro, why do so many people who have lived in NYC for three years or less think they are "experts" on life there??? I grew up in Brooklyn's Bush Terminal section (google it) in the 1950's and 60's. Finally moved out in 1990. I lived in NYC for over 40 years, I'll bet you weren't even born 40 years ago! You talk about roaches and mice?? You should see the rats on the subway tracks and in the streets.
The only time I cried in NYC was when I got drafted in 1971(remember Vietnam??). As for talking to strangers, DON'T, they are way too busy to give a crap about you. Maybe not YOU personally, as you're a cute chick.
In 1982 Ian Hunter wrote a song about NYC. The line I'll always remember is... I know it's a mess, but you gotta be crazy to live in a city, and New York City's the best. All I can say is Fuhgeddaboudit!! I will translate if ya need me to.
No shit, you are quite cute.

    • @gonegirl5330

Really no need for your sarcastic shit! The girl is purely giving HER account of her time spent in NYC so far and is passing on tips to help others and at the same time "alleviating" some of the myths!!! You miserable old fart :(. I've visited NYC 3 times now and it's one of the most amazing cities in the world and I plan on going back in the very near future. I have always found it to be vibrant, safe and friendly......so what's your problem? I do hope that I don't need any directions next time i'm there and bump in to you!

    • @martyjewell5683
      @martyjewell5683 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Well Lorraine, you scolded me good (well?)! Yes, I'm a sarcastic, semi-miserable old fart. Well, an old fart for sure, I'm 67. I'm from a different NYC time period. I'm all for helping folks with directions and or advice. Just that this chick ain't giving good advice. In my 40+ years of living in NYC I've seen many people hurt; physically, mentally and emotionally by bad advice. Good intentions don't always help.
You've "visited" NYC three times?? I've LIVED there for a very loooong time. I don't want "newbies" or visitors hurt. Just PLEASE get your advice from folks that have been there a little longer. Would you like me to move to your town and live there a year and start giving advice to new arrivals??
Ya gotta know what yer talkin' about before dispensing advice. Remember one thing about NYC; you can take the kid out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the kid. I will try to keep my sarcasm on a short leash.

i think when ur a white privileged girl ofcourse things like this may be possible. ive lived there the same amount of time she has and for sure there's more than what she says here. I agree with marty that living in nyc is not what she paints it out to be, her experience while valid , its still singular.

OMG, I hear what you say and I have to admit my jealousy... I am from Spain and living in New York would be my ultimate dream, but it is so hard to get to the States (I would even say impossible) without a sponsor. But, hey, never lose hope!
Thanks for the video and for letting me dream just a little bit for a while :)
