I am one of those guys that usually says "the books were better." But that's not the case for The Expanse. The showrunners made some slight changes (with the guidance of the original authors!) These things were great in the book, but wouldn't make great TV, so they changed events, event order, some characters, and overall made it flow better for TV. The books are great for some extra lore, getting to know more of what is going on in the heads of characters, and seeing a different way events play out. They are still for sure worth reading, but make no mistake, the show is in NO WAY a watered down version of the book! You are going to love this show!
Also the great complex characters. Avasaralla is a kind, gentle grandmother who is also ruthless enough to torture a young man and callous enough not to mind if it kills him. She is not simply a good guy or a villain, and she won't be the same person in season 2, let alone season 6. This plays out for all of the main cast and even recurring minor characters. Even Holden the space paladin is flawed, experiences flux, change, etc. also his acting is so under appreciated, especially his facial acting.
"with the guidance of the original authors!" Is an understatement and underselling it. The authors were writers on the show and Ty Franck stated they used the show to refine things from the books that they didn't like. This story began as a role-playing game, and some elements of that origin remain in the story. The creators of the game wrote a successful series of novels, and those same creators are in the screenwriting room guiding the adaptation to the screen. They have called this the "final draft" of their story, and they stayed fully involved in its production. "Welwala" comes from a Hindi word for "fellow" and the concept of the inner planets having deep gravity wells. But you'll catch on. Keep captions turned on. This series sucked me in with the "flip and burn." I'd originally learned about this maneuver in February 1965 from the Robert Heinlein novel "Have Space Suit-Will Travel." This was the first time I'd seen it on the screen...I may have squeaked out loud. Like the best of classic "hard" science fiction, this show uses real physics as a character of the story. As others have or will say, this show does not hold the hands of the audience. They show, don't tell, and they may only show you once. There is _no fluff._ There are no wasted scenes, no wasted dialog. Even details in the background give you important information. One reactor froze the scenes to read computer screens in the background, and that paid off. The writers know the entire saga from the beginning, so they have planted clues to events even seasons into the future into even this first episode.
An adaptation made by people who clearly, genuinely care about the storytelling and craft! It shouldn't be a rarity, but in the current landscape of TV & Film, it definitely feels like one.
Just finished the full length reaction. Takes some people a couple of episodes to get hooked with all the world building. I wasn't one of these, I fell in love from the get go, especially when I heard them say flip and burn.... showed that the show was grounded in real science, that ships need to slow down to change course etc. The fact that you love this pilot is a good sign, think you are going to love this show. (and yes, you will be cursing at the end of many an episode, when it comes to an end, lol) Love the little details, like how the belters have their own creole language, and doesn't translate for you, making you feel like an Earther in a foreign land. The creole language is a bit of an amalgam of existing earth languages, and you actually get to understand it a bit after a while. For example Wellwala, the insult thrown at Miller, comes from the Hindi wala(meaning lover) and Well for a gravity well, ie a planet. So basically it means planet lover, a belter sellout to Earth or Mars. To make a real world comparison, it would be similar to the old insult of 'Uncle Tom' to the Black community in the US. Other phrases you might hear frequently, 'Sasa ke', meaning 'You know', often used as a bit of a filler in a sentence. If you are familiar with French or Spanish, you can catch the roots of this. Other little details, belters tend to also use their hands alot when they speak, because in space, they spend alot of time in suits, so gestures help communicate your meaning. These little touches make the world really lived in. There is very little filler in the show as well. They put things in for a reason, and often doesn't pay off for a while, but it was there. For example, when Holden and the Captain are talking about the XO position, and the Captain talks about Earth and Mars hammering out a peace deal eventually, it briefly flashes to a vid screen, with Avarsarala on it, labelled as UN undersecretary. That is the Indian woman, on Earth. Don't worry though about missing things, I'm still catching little details after countless rewatches. Looking forward to this immensely. Its an early birthday present for me. (bonus as well, the Expanse fanbase is one of the most welcoming and supportive, and also really good at not spoiling)
I’ve been binge watching several other reactions to The Expanse, and most recently I’ve been keeping up with Warp Reactor, who’s currently on Season 3 (my favorite in a show with nothing but good seasons imo). This is my favorite sci-fi show (and one of my favorite shows of all time) for its realism, writing and acting. I’m super excited to find another reaction channel just starting out on it and I look forward to watching you react to how it unfolds. They hit you with a lot of mysteries at the beginning, but I find the payoff of watching all the pieces come together to be well worth it. Enjoy!
Wow, tight smart editing. You got the key points of this episode covered in under 22 minutes. But you got my sub before the episode even started. I’m going to be here for the whole ride.
The Expanse blew me away with how it so quickly became one of my favourite shows ever, standing alongside Doctor Who and company as one of the best things I've watched. I think it was just the sheer *genius* of the worldbuilding and how real it all feels (and as someone who works in the space industry, how realistic it mostly *is!*), but the fact that every character is stunningly well written and the plot is gripping as hell certainly didn't hurt.
How does a rat... (get into space)? Same way they make it to the open seas, on Earth... Cargo, specifically foodstuffs. We've probably told you lots already, but here's a quick, zero-spoiler rundown on what to expect: - Expect top tier writing, acting, worldbuilding and character development. Second to none -- and I've been watching science-fiction since the late 60s, so I don't make that claim lightly! - Expect a serious effort to remain as close to real space physics as good storytelling will allow. It's impossible to get it all perfect, but nobody tries harder. You won't notice most of the failings, but you will wonder out loud at some of the stuff you would think was impossible but isn't. - Expect to be treated like an adult, and not be spoon-fed the plot... Pay attention to everything -- this level of show costs money, so they have no time to waste holding your hand. All the answers will be coming in their own good time. - Expect to laugh, expect to cry... and occasionally, expect to want to throw stuff at your screen in frustration because they just ended another episode on a damn cliffhanger! - And last, but not least, expect to fall in love with as many characters as your little heart can handle! As in real life, no one on the show is all good, or all bad... but most of them are at least relatable. ;-] Welcome to The Expanse, glad you're doing this great show! Cheers!
The two most important non-spoiler things are that author is a pen name for two people. The other thing is that they were active in the writing in the show so their vision and staying true to the books was kept. But they both knew some things have to change for a TV medium, so they did so without changing the main story. Some characters in the books are changed or combined where needed, but it is still follows the books well.
Glad to meet you. I hope you enjoy this most excellent series of video storytelling. It's crazy how good it gets, just ask any fan :) Along with all the other good advice people give, I would like to say that the story really does evolve over time (as do the characters) and viewers are not supposed to clue in to EVERY mystery immediately. It's ok to say "gee, that was weird" if you feel that way. Though wild theories can be interesting too! Can't wait to experience this amazing show again, through your eyes and ears. Buckle up, Beratna!
Welcome to the master-class in cliff-hangers that is The Expanse. 😁 And there is no "anti-gravity" in this setting. The only ways to have "gravity" is to either have a large-enough mass; to accelerate with engines so the deck pushes up against the bottom of the crew's feet; or to spin a station. And, yes, that means the decks on the ships are stacked like the floors in a building. The flamey end of the ship is "down" (not "back") and the pointy end is "up" (not "forward").
So happy one of the best reactors is picking up this show, it is deserving of your time and critique for sure. The world building in season 1 is essential for the full story of the full series and is a little slower as a result but the acting is great and I hope it gets you hooked. The books are amazing, adding so much to the story. In the TV show the season 1 end is not the end of book one, which is half way through season 2, but it works.
I've been putting off The Expanse for years now, so when it won the poll I decided to finally get to it and watched this last week. Ep one was a lot of information to take in in one go, but it had some wonderful worldbuilding and a very thick atmosphere. And now I can get to ep 2 haha
This is absolutely true. The first episode was really about getting to know the world so that we can eventually understand the characters. I’m about to dive into episode two right now. I’m really excited.
When you get to the end of the series, watch this episode again. Just to see how much they set up in this episode. And yes, the books are definitely worth a read.
@@KevinLydaNot just this episode, all of the series again. I've watched the whole thing multiple times and watched many many reactions and I still keep finding out new things I missed, or different ways to interpret the story.
@@PaulMDove2 Same here...I've rewatched the series at least 40 times thanks to reactors and it's amazing the new details I still catch because this show put so much effort into the universe they created. Absolutely love the show for this and it's always awesome to see the payoffs down the line!
Glad you’re giving this excellent show a watch thru! Got yourself a new subscriber to watch along… I’m guessing your several episodes (season(s?) ahead so you’ve already figured out that your supposed to be confused at this point… all your questions WILL be answered…. And immediately replaced with many more!! 😁 oh, and the cliffhanger endings of the episodes only get more intense! 😎 Strap on in and enjoy the ride!! 🚀🚀
You caught something fairly subtle...whenever a scene is in zero-g, they use "floaty" camera movement. Ships in this show often switch between operating under thrust gravity (when the engines are on and the acceleration pulls everything toward the floor), and being "on the float", coasting with engines off with everyone in zero-g.
The books are great and this realization is great. Love that it doesn't say that sea levels have risen but shows it. And the characters are fully fleshed. Stick with it.
The 'Battlestar Galactica' to 'The Expanse' pipeline strikes again 🤣 I love that BSG Fans all universally agree that The Expanse shares the throne of excellent Sci Fi Television, and we show up en masse whenever it comes to either show. Obligatory "The first three episodes are a lot of lore but episode 4 is where it really kicks into gear and then it does not slow down until the series finale!"
I honestly don't remember if this is said in the show as well but I love this line. "On Ceres there are no laws, only cops." It paints such a grim picture of legality that perfectly fits the tone of the series.
A little science fact relevant to this episode: Between the writing of the first book and the filming of the first season of the show, a huge amount of water was discovered on Ceres in real life. So to preserve the book's plot point about the scarcity of air and water, the line at the beginning about Earth and Mars shipping off all of Ceres' water was added. It's a bit unfeasible, just considering the vast amount of water we're dealing with, but the Expanse certainly has plenty of uses for water. Not only can it be purified for drinking, it can also be separated out into oxygen for breathing and hydrogen for fusion (which is what's powering 90% of civilization in the show at this point). Steam heated by the fusion reactor is also used for the maneuvering thrusters on all but the largest ships. So while it's a bit unlikely that Earth and Mars could have gone through the entirety of Ceres' water in the timeframe they supposedly did, there's at least several different reasons why they would have done it - especially when you consider that the population on Mars and the Moon in the show is about 10 billion people (only 6 million on Ceres for comparison).
Absolutely love the show and books. From my experience, if you go the book route, don’t read any until you finish Season 3 and then always be one book behind the TV series. Season 4-6 line up with the books.
2:03 The Books are pretty much the pinnacle of modern day sci fi writing. Also, only the first six of nine books (as well as a lot of novellas etc) have been adapted for the series so far, so i would recommend reading the books at some point :)
The Authors have sometimes called the series their "second take", basically some stuff had to of course be changed from the books based on the reality of producing something for television instead of writing about it, but some stuff was also changed because the Author's nowadays think that the story flows better doing stuff slightly different.
16:56 Yeah, the Expanse is great at endings of the "Don't end it here, i need more!" kind. The other kind of ending it's really good at (and you're gonna learn to love and hate at the same time because it's so good) is what i would call the "pushed of the cliff" kind of ending. Where other shows end episodes on Cliffhangers posing "What's about to happen" questions, the Expanse ends many episodes on "What the actual fuck just happened?" kind of questions/situations.
Might i ask how far along in watching this show you are currently (behind the scenes)? Is Patreon basically always exactly up to date or do you for example binge watch half a season and then upload it to Patreon over a certain timespan? Just to know what quotes from the books etc i can reference without spoiling.
The books are worth it. In The Expanse, ships are built like buildings with one deck stacked on the other and ships accelerate at a constant 1G to provide “gravity”. If the ships drive is out - no gravity. If the ship wants to slow down, stop, or course correct, it has to flip 180 and fire thrusters. If they are traveling a far distance, they have to begin decelerating half way.
The thing with Miller and the air filters was a story told by "miller" in the third or fourth book but it's based on something in his past. It's cool that that they turned it into a "corrupt cop" moment in the show.

The amount of attention you are paying to names and places, as well as who they are personally, just in the first episode will serve you well in this series. I have watched a lot of SciFi and this is one of the best I have watched.
The books are amazing. The author(s) helped write and produce the show, which is also amazing. There is some necessary streamlining and a few less characters, but it's remarkably faithful to the original series.
I could swear you've done this show before... but then upon checking your Patreon I realized I had already surfed Patreon and come across your reaction. Glad to see you are continuing with the series.
Currently, for me this is the greatest Sci Fi show ever made (Firefly knocked B5 off the top spot, now its this). The books are VERY worth reading, and while the series is true to the books, the books give a lot more depth, and carry the story further than this great show did. If you use great source material, you can make great series. You have a great ride ahead, and some of the best characters ever written. Enjoy!
Great choice for a reaction and a good reaction - you're asking all the right questions. I just realised that Vargas is played by Julian Richings, who was Death in the Supernatural series.

This world was created to make a video game that fell through then a rpg that fell through so a novel series was created from the left over worldbuilding. That's why there's so much depth to the story.

There's no artificial gravity on the show. When a ship isn't accelerating, people are in zero-gee. Those boots they use have electro-magnets at their bottoms, which allows people to walk but it won't stop tools, hair and whatever else from just floating around.

Enjoy!
The expanse is the most scientifically accurate sci fi show made and the writing is excellent, one of the best sci fi shows ever made
There is no laws in Ceres, just cops...
Welcome to the Expanse!
Welcome to any frontier existence.
Wow, tight smart editing. You got the key points of this episode covered in under 22 minutes. But you got my sub before the episode even started. I’m going to be here for the whole ride.
WELCOME TO THE SCREAMING FIREHAWKS! You'll come to understand that name in Season 2
Welcome to the Expanse.
Quite literally obsessed by this show. Looking forward to your reactions. BG was fantastic.
We've probably told you lots already, but here's a quick, zero-spoiler rundown on what to expect:
- Expect top tier writing, acting, worldbuilding and character development.
As in real life, no one on the show is all good, or all bad... but most of them are at least relatable. ;-]
Welcome to The Expanse, glad you're doing this great show!
It's crazy how good it gets, just ask any fan :)
Along with all the other good advice people give, I would like to say that the story really does evolve over time (as do the characters) and viewers are not supposed to clue in to EVERY mystery immediately. It's ok to say "gee, that was weird" if you feel that way. Though wild theories can be interesting too!
Can't wait to experience this amazing show again, through your eyes and ears. Buckle up, Beratna!
Welcome to the master-class in cliff-hangers that is The Expanse. 😁
And there is no "anti-gravity" in this setting.
Welcome to the Churn! Great Reaction.
Strap in Screaming Firehawks, you're in for one Hell of a ride!
I'm exceptionally excited for this. Far and away the most impressive modern scifi series, imo. Have fun!
Glad you’re giving this excellent show a watch thru! Got yourself a new subscriber to watch along…
I’m guessing your several episodes (season(s?) ahead so you’ve already figured out that your supposed to be confused at this point… all your questions WILL be answered….
And so begins, the countdown to ep.4
The books are 100% worth reading and the show, while different in places is one of the best adaptions out there.
The books are great and this realization is great. Love that it doesn't say that sea levels have risen but shows it. And the characters are fully fleshed. Stick with it.
You ask....."is this one of those shows that's going to make me want to watch the next episode?"
Short answer.....YES!! VERY much so. 😂
"Its clear theres going to be a lot of likable characters." youre not wrong.
A hell of a lot of hateable characters, too.
Oh, you're in for a treat :)
The 'Battlestar Galactica' to 'The Expanse' pipeline strikes again 🤣 I love that BSG Fans all universally agree that The Expanse shares the throne of excellent Sci Fi Television, and we show up en masse whenever it comes to either show.
Obligatory "The first three episodes are a lot of lore but episode 4 is where it really kicks into gear and then it does not slow down until the series finale!"
yeah, unlike fiery BSG, The Expanse starts a bit boring for a mass viewer.
@@angeltensey so much more of The Expanse happens in your head than on the screen, even when what is on the screen is jam packed
I honestly don't remember if this is said in the show as well but I love this line.
"On Ceres there are no laws, only cops."
It paints such a grim picture of legality that perfectly fits the tone of the series.
Woohoo one of my favourite reactors doing my favourite show! Win win
Absolutely! Looking forward to this journey!
Good choice ! You'll also laugh & cry a lot. And be dazzled.
The books are definitely worth reading!
A little science fact relevant to this episode:
Between the writing of the first book and the filming of the first season of the show, a huge amount of water was discovered on Ceres in real life.
Oohhhh, here we go 💪
Great series! Great opening episode!
Oh, and the books are definitely worth reading!
Blind Wave called this one of the best shows they have seen and had it "A Tier" in their show reactions list.
I'm rounding the second season and I have NO doubt that is true.
This was a fantastic show, I'm looking forward to seeing your reaction!
I can't wait for the next episode!
17:30 Well, Ressources and Rights.
Might i ask how far along in watching this show you are currently (behind the scenes)? Is Patreon basically always exactly up to date or do you for example binge watch half a season and then upload it to Patreon over a certain timespan? Just to know what quotes from the books etc i can reference without spoiling.
One of us! One of us!
Love that you're watching this. It is my favorite sci fi series by far. Hope you enjoy.
Welcome to The Expanse! As you can tell, this first season is a mystery!
Subscribed for The Expanse!!
OMFG YES LETS GO
Instant subscribe, well done reaction for sure! I recommend frontloading your intro with warnings against spoilers. Like any show with a passionate fanbase, most people are fine about it but I've seen some spoilers in comments in the past on rare occasions and this is a GREAT show to try your hardest to avoid spoilers for it.
I have stopped counting how many reactors I have seen for The Expanse. It doesn't matter, its the best show out there period. Welcome and buckle up! If the first episode snagged you, you are in for a wild and amazing ride!
Welcome to the best show of all time. Get ready to weep buckets and laugh your head off.
As for the cliffhangers, I would like to quote one of my favourite Expanse reactors, Warp Reactor: Scene ends, credits roll - "Motherfucker!"
The amount of attention you are paying to names and places, as well as who they are personally, just in the first episode will serve you well in this series. I have watched a lot of SciFi and this is one of the best I have watched.
I love this show. You will too. Subscribed
Definitely subbing for this. Top 3 shows of all time for me. Probably best sci-fi.
Man this is making me wanna rewatch the show. Im reading the books and THAT is so good, but i saw the show first. UGH i need to watch it again!
The books are amazing. The author(s) helped write and produce the show, which is also amazing. There is some necessary streamlining and a few less characters, but it's remarkably faithful to the original series.
Liked and subscribed just for this show :) I've seen your videos before but this series is the absolute best sci fi!
Enjoy!
Oh I’m so excited for you! Enjoy the ride.
Great choice for a reaction and a good reaction - you're asking all the right questions. I just realised that Vargas is played by Julian Richings, who was Death in the Supernatural series.
Amazing reaction, you will love this journey and I'm excited to tag along.
Finally, my favorite show. You're in for an amazing ride. Thank you, it's always nice when someone experiences this show for the first time.
Hi Chris, This is belated 'Thanks' for your epic run on BattleStar Galactica. Remember, that 'thanks' s button wasn't working? -Anyway, I have enjoyed your Movie and TV reactions for some time now. I'm past due on showing the love. Your Channel is A tier good stuff. Look forward to many more epic reactions.
(Although if you rate this above BSG I'm gonna want a refund. ) Enjoy The Expanse.
Thanks so much! So glad you enjoy the channel.
YAY THE EXPANSE!!!!!!! Get ready to get ADDICTED!
This world was created to make a video game that fell through then a rpg that fell through so a novel series was created from the left over worldbuilding. That's why there's so much depth to the story.
Books are amazing & the show does the world and story justice. Welcome to the Expanse, strap in for a hell of a ride.
The world building is amazing! And what a great cast! I love this show and have most of the books on audiobook format. They are great to listen to.
just about to watch this and wanted to share: it took me a few tries but once I pushed through to episode 3/4 I was hooked. And it keeps getting better. Hang in there and enjoy the ride for the best scifi series ever!
I've been looking for a reason to rewatch The Expanse! This is one of the best hard sci-fi series of all time.
My friend get ready for some brutal cliffhangers in this show.
OMG, amazing book series, amazing tv adaptation. So excited you're reacting to it!!!!
This is one of the best if not the best sci-fi show ever made. I like your energy and style, you just got a new sub. Welcome to the ride beratna, strap in, it's gonna get wild.
I love that I have one of my favourite reactors watching one of my favourite shows ❤️
Terrific reaction! Really enjoyed your comments and have subscribed to the channel. As others have said, the first few episodes are a little uneven but from episode 4 onwards it just keeps getting better. Looking forward to going on this journey again as you head out to explore The Expanse.
There's no artificial gravity on the show. When a ship isn't accelerating, people are in zero-gee. Those boots they use have electro-magnets at their bottoms, which allows people to walk but it won't stop tools, hair and whatever else from just floating around.
You are so delightful to watch and listen to, I honestly could watch any reaction with you. Thanks for these
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying the content!
rewatched Galactica with you.. after multiple rewatch with just myself.. looking forward to rewatch again, after multiple rewatches, the Expanse as well :)
The Expanse is amazing! Both the show and the books.
Welcome to the churn.
Hey Chris, so happy to see you start this! I so enjoy your reactions and this is my #1 show right now! Yay!
Super excited for this. Might consider having someone mod your comments. People have a hard time not getting ahead of themselves. It’s hard not to but you do NOT want to be spoiled on anything. Let’s goooooooo
I really should lol. I'm currently two months ahead for channel members & patrons so that helps a bit. So far so good with The Expanse! I finished book 1 spoiler free.
Welcome to the Expanse. It wouldn't hurt you to lay your hands on a map of our solar system's planets & moons... 😅
*Beratna!!!!* The Belt opens its arms to welcome you to the family!
A brand new book series from the guys who wrote the books comes on Aug 6. Yes the books are great. One more thing, I forgot how great the show was. I gotta play Starfield now. We need some expanse mods.
OMG SOOOOOO here for this!!! Lesssgooooooo!!!
Yessss. So excited to see you dive into this masterpiece!
Hoping you keep with the show. It's one of the best sci-fi shows. The science of space travel done in this show is so realistic. Great reaction.
Definitely sticking with it! I just finished 2x5 so stopping isn’t even an option at this point.
The author was on Twitter from the beginning (may still be). Chatting and answering questions. 1st season was great.
OH YES< Joe Straczynski is hella active on Twitter. He even deigns to respond to me from time to time
BTW I cannot recommend highly enough his Autobiography "BECOMING SUPERMAN" published like 2 years ago.. GET THE AUDIOBOOK read by himself, and your mind will be blown by what that man has lived through.
Yes, the novels are fantastic and very worth reading. The show follows them pretty closely
Yes read the expanse books. And yes this is a great show too. Faithful to the books but different in some ways and sometimes for the better.
16:56 Yes
'Wow, what a great big cast of people to follow.'
heheheheheh
