Duncan Burden is correct. To me the real rope feels softer on my back while the steel cable ropes are easier to climb, spring off of and spring board. Although I believe it becomes a preference as all moves can be done with either.
It's also okay to grab the middle rope with the left hand when you pivot that top rope breaks sometimes it happens I'm a trainee at the moment and we were told that accidents like that happen
Currently training right now. I understand that wrestling hurts but should running the ropes hurt more than bumping? Im very comfortable with all my bumps . But running the ropes is causing much pain . What am I doing wrong?
Running the ropes will hurt for first timers. The steel cable or bull rope is unforgiving to new skin. Many people will bruise up the first few weeks until they build a callus to it.
@@jacksterling9258 Correct. Watch for the red marks on pros on tv, they are never across the spine. put the meat of the upper back into it not bone. Still gonna hurt lol
Simple answer is, in my opinion, hitting the rope with your full back looks better. I do understand how it is considered dangerous but you gotta keep in mind EVERYTHING we do in the ring is dangerous. I tell my students when the rope breaks it will usually break from 1 corner but still be hooked on 3 other corners, so if you're holding on you will end up going backwards over the rope (Like a clothesline over the top) We also make sure to maintain our ring and ropes so we can further trust it from breaking.
@@SantinoBros That's interesting to know. Thanks! Though, I feel like flat back ends up looking bad to me when the wrestlers (often the women) don't attack the ropes and almost seem to just be standing at the ropes, so the idea of using the ropes to change your direction gets thrown out. Is it just a case of people not being aggressive enough with the ropes?
Bunch of different top guy pro wrestler's hit the ropes different. You mention older wrestlers, look at how Flair would hit the ropes lol. Hell, look at how Flair did most shit. Like take a back body drop. A lot of it was unique or unconventional.
@@HashBandicoot356 there's a reason Flair always takes back bumps more on his side rather than landing flat. He had to adjust how he took bumps after the plane crash he was in.
What is the height of the top rope from the ring's floor? (Not the floor that the ring is set up on) I'm just wondering how big I'd look in the ring, being 6'2", 245lbs. I can't go by what other wrestlers on TV look like because the heights and weights are always exaggerated to make them seem "Larger than life".
Running the ropes has always been difficult for me. At 6’10 it is awkward and looks terrible when you line the rope up to the meat on your upper back (which he didn’t explain). I wanted to learn the other way to run ropes (Hogan, Jerry Lynn, and others) where they lean kind of sideways into it elbow bent and over, but they didn’t teach that in my school.
It's hard for me at 5'8... for some reason running the ropes seems to be the hardest part. I threw my back out & couldn't stand up this morning. Worried about going back tomorrow
we've been told that you have to be 3 steps in order to reach the ropes. I can't reach the ropes by 3rd step so i get to the ropes by the 4th. From your video i see that you pivot on the 3rd while i pivot on the 4th. Any feedback on how to improve?
I was running the ropes during a try out, but I was having some difficulty because I was taller getting my foot work right. Is there any way to prepare for that?
This might not work for you. I’m tall too and no matter what ring I am in I always do 3 step turn, and in a ring I’m not use to, I count in my head (1,2,3 turn) and I do it until I don’t have to think about it anymore. I been in 13 foot home rings and 22 foot boxing rings. Your step size and speed will learn to adjust. Small rings are tougher. Shorter guys can’t do the abnormally big rings in 3 steps but at 6’10 I can without looking bad
From my experience holding the middle always has been due to the height of the wrestler. Shorter wrestlers tend to do this to avoid slipping between the too and middle rope which leads to the top rope hitting your head. In a perfect world shorter wrestlers should hit the rope like Rey mysterio where the does not touch the top so he only hits the second rope.
It also depends on the texture on the ropes too, if the ropes are real ropes you can run into them with full speed but if the ropes are rapped metal cable, you need to slow yourself down before making contact.
*Examines the all the top wrestlers that I can think of from the last 20+ years* *They all hit the ropes slightly different than is shown here and slightly different than one-another* "Interesting...."
and for the love of god, do not grab the middle rope with your other hand. i see many wrestlers doing that today because they are self-taught and it looks like complete garbage.
Listen to the Cornette Podcast much? No one brings it up until he rants about it. I don't hold the second rope myself (I'm 6 foot) but let's be honest Rey Rey has been doing it since the mid 90s. women do it and shorter wrestlers tend to do it too. It has nothing to do with being self taught, it's about height. ALL of pro wrestling is self taught anyway. Who taught the teachers????
I miss running the ropes. I literally lived in my wrestling school, so I would train all day long, and I loved running the ropes.
Me: watches a lot of high flying in wwe yet stays quiet

People don’t realize what an art form pro wrestling is.

Yes we do

It's violent ballet with crazy levels of athletics.
Notice how after he pivots his feet are perfectly parallel to each other and perpendicular to the ropes.

My cousins are pro wrestlers, actually...
Thanks for showing me some additional info, as well.
Rey Mysterio said in an interview that he was used to wrestle with ropes but when he went to WWE they used cables. What's the difference?
Cable wire in the ropes
@Duncan Burden yeah, wasn't sure about which had which but I wonder how they behave differently
Duncan Burden is correct.

As another rookie, I found a big thing may be if you hit your spine directly it hurts way more than catching the ropes across your ass and shoulders
@@jacksterling9258 Correct. Watch for the red marks on pros on tv, they are never across the spine. put the meat of the upper back into it not bone. Still gonna hurt lol
I see older generation wrestlers hit more on their side than flat back. Even Al Snow mentioned that flat back is dangerous. Any insight on this?
