  • These are my first impressions on the Lumen Handpan!
    Corrections:
Turns out there ARE other electronic handpan competitors, I had no idea. There's the NeoTone and the Wavepan. In the past there was the Oval Handpan, but it appears to be discontinued. Also, it appears Lumen began it's life as a Indigogo project back in 2016, the inventor didn't mention it to me so I didn't know about that stage of development.

I teach marching percussion at a local high school, and we used this last year in our field show. The kids and the crowd loved it!!! Amplified perfectly 👍

You didn’t mention that this was initially a Kickstarter project. I’ve had my Lumen Handpan for a couple of years now. It’s very fun! My biggest complaint is that there isn’t enough onboard storage to hold even all of the factory provided sample sets. What initially attracted me was the possibility of making my own samples for it, but with such limited memory, I haven’t bothered.

I’m interested to know which scales and instrument sounds this has
I would like to be able to play with quarter tones and such.
But I assume that those kinds of scales aren’t built into the thing by default
But I was thinking that you could maybe change the pitch of the individual tones to match whatever scale you prefer even the less conventional ones
It would also be pretty cool to use with a viper phone kind of sound or something like that.
And add effects like ambience and such if that’s possible
That would be a huge miss if they didn’t use the opportunity to add those kinds of things with an electronic pad.
But personally the biggest benefit I see is that you can get away with purchasing just one handpan and get all the scales you need
Instead of getting a new one for each scale, that’s probably the most annoying thing about this beautiful instrument, if you ask me
And the thing holding me back from making the decision to purchase one for myself

In case it's relevant to anybody the Neotone is also available (for preorder); it's also hand pan shaped and it's much more expensive but also more realistic. The models they're working on right now are between 2.5 and 3 thousand euros + vat and they'll soon be doing preorders. They have a waiting list you can join if interested. If you're lucky enough to be in Budapest (Hungary) you can go try them

The Neotone is another high quality version of an electronic handpan that has been recently released. Also, several years ago yhe Oval was released. Eventually support dried up and the app had bugs that were never fixed. Neotone has been working on this for a few years. Good review though. But please don't use Sweetwater as the source for quality handpans. The ones there are mostly manufactured in China, like the Amazon ones you posted about as well. There are artisan manufacturers around the world that can create beautiful quality custom instruments for comparable prices and much better customer support direct from the makers and not a factory in China. 😉✌️

Hey Danny, thanks for the info! I'll post a correction paragraph in the video description.

    • @dilankarun9172

I don't think Sweetwater is selling the Ebay/Amazon Chinese knock offs. Meinl makes there's in Columbia, Sela in Germany, Pearls , could be China/Taiwan or Thailand. The Handpan community has this list of about 15 hand pan makers. (All boutique). Anything not on that list, you're persona non grata. Remember drum snobbery in the old days ? 😛 Oh & don't dare call it a hang drum, the original inventor will sue your ass ! #1 in buying a handpan is knowing which scale is going to work for you. And how the heck can you figure that out w/o trying a few ? I've never had an issue returning something to Sweetwater. Heck my SW sales engineer even waives the return S&H 😀 I doubt these Boutique guys are going to be super happy about taking a return just because you didn't vibe with the sound ! 😋 Thanks for the upload Justin. Great work.

@@dilankarun9172 first off, yes, Justin great work and great video. Very informative and enjoyable. I was merely trying to fill in some gaps. OK, so Meinl, Sela and Pearls are made from 3rd party makers. The issue I have with big box stores like Sweetwater (and don't get me wrong, I buy a lot of stuff from Sweetwater and love them) is that yes, they do offer services and returns, but say you need your pan retuned. Sure, they cover S & H, but your pan will travel from you to them to the factory of origin (China? S. America?) and then back to you. You never have direct communication with the actual maker. And chances are the "maker" is probably one of many people in the factory. You get it back weeks, months later and hopefully it's in tune again. There are more than "15 boutique makers" out there these days. And more than likely a person can find one if not more in their region. And you have the opportunity to actually go to their workshops, see how they're made and try different scales that haven't been hammered on by the general public all day long. Service direct from the person making it, not your Sweetwater rep who I love, but probably doesn't know much about Handpans. As for being sued by the original Hang makers. Yes, there has been an ongoing legal battle with them. But an organization Calle HCU (Handpan Community United) has spent 100's of thousand of euros to fight them. Worst case being the scenario that your "knock off Hang" could be confiscated at an airport when traveling, like a knock off handbag. Craziness. Yet, you have a core bunch of makers fighting the good fight so the world can enjoy handpans. To give some history, I've been in the scene since '06, used to be an admin on the only site at the time for anything handpan related, Handpan.org. I've actually designed some of the logos for some of those "boutique" companies like Pantheon Steel, Makai and Arcana. I've seen times when there was only the one maker, I've been to gatherings through the years, met players, makers and enthusiasts of all ages and backgrounds. And I've seen the ugly and the pretty of this community and the instrument and the evolution of it all, first hand. No, the big box stores can't be stopped. Nor the Chinese manufacturing. But, that doesn't mean we can't still be educated on quality, history and commercialism. The Sweetwaters will fill a niche. But most of those pans will end up collecting dust eventually, I feel. IF the pricepoints level out some and they big box stores carry them and price them like Mexican Fenders asm opposed to Guild Guitars, then the basic consumer niche can be better represented. The boutique makers will be like artisan luthiers and be able to offer the quality and service that an artisan maker can provide. Until then, I'll still consider the Sweetwater like group of instruments a less than good option for the consumer or hobbyist. There are artisan makers that can make quality pans for less than what these stores offer, even now. Good starter pans. The whole prejudices of artisan makers vs. big box stores will evolve in time. But for now, despite my love of Sweetwater for many things, Handpans is not their forte right now. Besides, I like to support small artisans. And I like knowing the direct provenance of my Handpan. This community is still so young, we should still be able to appreciate the art for what it is before the commercial wave wipes the magic and quality away. Thanks for the feedback, Dilan!

I'm a kit drummer predominantly with a leaning towards also adding bongos and cajon on occasion. Hand pan/tongue drum has always seemed interesting but this seems over the top... either way its at least $1000 US or upward of $1500 AUS...

Good review. You mentioned several times that Lumen is the only one who makes digital handpans. There is a company called Neotone that makes digital handpans that I believe are far superior. Perhaps you could check them out and do a comparison video. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks you

there's no way it should cost this much. maybe handpan enthusiasts will think otherwise. why is there not something (muuuuch) cheaper with no internal computer that can interface with an iphone? this is the same price as a nice roland kit, albeit it's portable - however, the modules on those kit's are huge either, it's the kit.

Man, it’s incredible to me that people spend $1,500 - $2,500 on acoustic handpans. They sound really cool and all but they’re limited to a single key. So if you want a range of options for several different keys, you’re going to have to spend an awful lot of money.
If this electronic one sounds as good as an acoustic one, $1,500 might be the deal of the century for some people.
