NAPA VALLEY - Welcome to the beautiful Napa Valley, California - one of the premiere winery destinations in the United States! Today we have the special opportunity to go on the Wine Train, a historical railroad journey that's been restored as a gourmet food experience. I’m going to share with you a little behind the scenes of what goes into the Wine Train, and all the delicious food on board!
Again, thank you to Visit California (and Visit Napa Valley) for sponsoring my trip.

We arrived early and headed to the commissary to learn a little about what happens behind the scenes of the Wine Train. It was also a great opportunity to learn a little about the history of the Wine Train and how it was established and later restored, and converted into a gourmet meal experience and what it is today. We saw a little of the prep in the kitchen and then some of the chef’s loading their ingredients onto the train for the lunch ride.
When the time came, we boarded the train, and first sat in the lounge to enjoy a drink and appetizer. For appetizers today we had a tray of cheeses and fruits. After the train traveled from Napa to St. Helena, it then turns around and heads back. We then headed over to the main dining car for lunch. In the kitchen things were buzzing - unlike a restaurant where guests arrived staggered, on the wine train, everyone is there and ready to eat at the same time. So the kitchen car is a frenzy at peak time. Yet as soon as all the orders are ready, it’s immediately calm. It was quite unique to see. For lunch we tried the tenderloin and the herb roasted chicken.
Definitely the Wine Train is not only about the food, but really about the atmosphere, the classic heritage of the train cars and decorations, and the gorgeous changing scenery of Napa Valley. I thought it was an incredible experience in California.
We took the Gourmet Express train for lunch and depending on season and situation, prices can fluctuate between $265 - $325 per person. 🚂 Wine Train: www.winetrain.com/

I ‘ve lived in the Bay Area since the 80s, and I love the wine country. It’s one of the most wonderful, beautiful places on earth!
And yes, it’s true, the Bay Area has changed quite a lot. I love the weather, the area, the scenery, the terrain, but it’s SOOO expensive, to live here. Healthcare has deteriorated, many medical professionals and Drs have left bc they can’t afford to live here, all the good restaurants are gone, there are few niceties like a good French bakery (or ANY bakery), the seafood shops have gone, no butchers or delis, and it’s become very built up in an unattractive way. Few to none family run businesses, everything is a chain, even the Asian markets, which are equal to the number of traditional American supermarkets like Safeway. Even Whole Foods is nothing special now. It just feels so different living here. I no longer like it, but we have our home we have invested so much of ourselves in. Can’t take it with you. 😢

Three years ago, wife, friends and I took this train. The tour was wonderful and the food on board was excellent. Best of all, thanks to the Napa Wine Train management, our group got a full refund for the simple reason that, as we booked our lunch for the return trip (the choices were either lunch on the outward bound trip or on the return trip), and as we were enjoying the sumptuous lunch after the tour of the vineyards, the train halted and we continued our lunch as normal. We were later told that the engine broke down and we had to wait for a bus to take us back to Napa City. To us all, it was just a small glitch as we had already enjoyed the outward journey along with the vineyard tour. So in fact we only had 1/4 of the trip left and we were really enjoying the lunch accompanied by magnificent wines although the train was stationary.
Imagine our pleasant surprise when we arrived back in town and were told that we will all receive refunds!!
    Thanks, again, Napa Wine Train!

As any chef will tell you, our entire service economy - the restaurant business as we know it - in most American cities, would collapse overnight without Mexican workers. Some, of course, like to claim that Mexicans are “stealing American jobs.” But in two decades as a chef and employer, I never had ONE American kid walk in my door and apply for a dishwashing job, a porter’s position - or even a job as a prep cook. Mexicans do much of the work in this country that Americans, probably, simply won’t do. Anthony Bourdain

The So glad to learn the history of the wine train. I never knew it had been in existence since, what did he say, the 40s? But it was not in use.
I live in Northern Ca and am very familiar with the wine country and never knew that.
I really wanted to ride that train, especially when new, but my husband was a spoiler: he never wanted to bc he thought it was “touristy.” There was talk at the time the wine country would become touristy as a result….of course tourists always are attracted to the wine country, like any of the special places on earth where people go for holiday, or vacation, but it never became touristy. It’s charming and beautiful there. But everything there has become much more expensive.

You didn't say anything about the wine you drank. It looked really good. Your trip reminds me of my trip when I was young. My Mom and I road the Northern Pacific from Tacoma to Spokane Washington. At that time they had the dining cars. We ate like you did. White linen tablecloths, nice dishes and glasses. Nice interior. I'll never forget it. My Dad, at that time, was an Engineer on the Northern Pacific Railroad. He was there 38 years. He "fired" freight trains. I always said he drove the trains, but he said that was wrong, he "fired" the trains. He loved that job. Thank you for sharing.
