The gear change on my 2014 MX5 was getting a bit notchy so I decided to replace the gate, and watched a few videos prior to starting. I removed the console etc and guess what - the 3 bolts holding the gate in place were also loose. Is this a common fault? By the way, an easier way of removing the window switches is to romove the entire little panel that surrounds the switches and lift it clear. There is plenty of slack in the wiring and it makes removal of the connector very much easier. There a 2 metal spring clips at the front to the panel and 2 at the rear.
Hmm... I'm starting to think it's a case of needing some thread locker to hold those 3 bolts secure. I might need to check mine to see if they've come loose again. And I like the idea of taking the switch panel out to get at the connectors. Will give that a try next time. 😊👍
Great video. A pointer, if you’re removing all those parts, it’s a good opportunity to replace the turret oil, I believe it takes 90cc of 75-90W GL5. Will help to reduce notchyness.
That, my friend, was absolutely brilliant… Thanks very much for an awesome instructional video. My gear shift is far from smooth, and now I can’t get sit to get stuck in there and improve it. One negative though, you didn’t say if it solved your problem or not??
Thank you for watching and for the feedback! Actually it didn't fix it completely. It did improve slightly. Turns out my problem was with my clutch hydraulics and a small crack in my clutch pedal mount. Changed my master and slave cylinders, and got a new reinforced clutch pedal from Nielex. Will need to make a follow up video to this soon. 😊
@@TachOnRed Many thanks for that. My shift is just not slick. You have to be really firm with it, and everybody says the gearshift on the MX5 is wonderful, mine has got 105K on the clock though!
Mine was worn enough after 50,000mi that I was finding reverse at traffic lights. Not a great idea! Looked pretty similar to yours. I'd recommend everyone replaces it as a preventative measure
I think the smaller one might be for the prht models only. When the power roof is operated, the windows will automatically lower about 2 inches. So, my guess is its for that. Is yours a soft top?
@@TachOnRed Mine is prht and it lowers the windows as you mentioned. Other interesting detail that both buttons are automatic down, but none of them is automatic up.
Ohhhkay, then I gotta be honest - I'm just as stumped as you are. I do know there are differences in the auto up and down functions across different models and countries. Like, some cars have auto up and auto down. Some only one side. Some, as in your case, only auto down but no auto up. You could try programming the auto up like shown in this video: th-cam.com/video/j_NYC8tcHRU/w-d-xo.html If it doesn't work, then there may just be no auto up on your car. 🤔
@@TachOnRed Thanks for the tip, I will give it a try :) Do you know any other tricks like this? What I try to figure out if it's possible to turn off or change the settings of the bose system's EQ change when I open the roof. I have tried to turn the audiopilot mode off but that didn't change this behavior and I have found the switch behind the roof latch. I was thinking of shorting the switch to disable the fucntion, but I'm not sure if it will affect any other function in the car other than the amp.
I imagine tampering with the roof switch will just give you problems with your roof opening and closing properly. Instead, maybe you can try find which wire/ pin on the back of the head unit provides the input to tell the head unit when the roof is open, and either cut that or short it to make it do what you want. I don't have a BOSE sound system in mine and I've never had to work with one. First mod I did after getting the car was installing a Kenwood head unit and new door speakers. 😆
Hi Luke! Thanks for watching. I just added the Amazon link to the description for both my gear knob and the black collar thing. I had to use a cutting disc to chop off the top bit of the black collar a bit to get my knob to sit further down the shaft. You don't need to but if you use it as is, there will be fewer threads for the gear knob itself to screw onto. I just felt it more comfortable when screwed all the way down. :)

Mine were barely tight when I did this job. Thanks for the reminder to go back in and put thread locker on them
Did I see a video that clearly stated these 3 bolts were designed to be only just more than finger tight. Help me out here.
I hope not.@@williamturner1517
Thanks for the video
kept finding NC2 ones
Helped me swap out a broken cupholder lid in my NC1
Thank you for watching! Glad to hear it helped! :)
Great video, great angles, perfect descriptions, and now my console can come out. Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful! 😃 👍
Nice video! Very clear and easy to follow!

I'd check before using GL5 because the trans specifies GL4. There's (apparently) a chance oil can migrate from the turret to the trans.

Interesting, I had about 70k miles on mine when I recorded this video. :)
How can I find the plate with the gear levels ? Looks awesome fornnon label gear shift
I got mine on ali express.
Seems the one I got isn't available anymore. But I found this one which I like even better. 😃
