- The good and the bad of the Sega genesis classics for the PS4 Xboxone and steam. Plus I show game footage of every game that is on this collection.
Sega Genesis Classics (Sega Mega Drive Classic Collection in PAL regions) is a series of compilations featuring Sega Genesis video games released for Microsoft Windows. The collections are split into "Volumes", with the first four receiving both physical and digital releases and the fifth volume only being digitally released.
Steam versions of these collections exclude Sonic the Hedgehog and ToeJam & Earl games. The former can be purchased as a part of Sonic-related compilations and all games can be purchased separately but at higher prices.
Sega re-released the first four physically released volumes as the Sega Genesis Classic Collection: Gold Edition (Sega Mega Drive Classic Collection: Gold Edition in PAL regions), for Microsoft Windows. It is a four-disc set of the forty-six Sega Genesis games from the first four volumes. The collection has configuring keyboard support which provides a personalised gaming experience, as well as a multiplayer mode for a select number of titles. The collection also has save and load functionality that is included in all of the games that allows the player to pick up and play saved games at the exact point they left off.
Sega released a free application on Steam on April 28, 2016, called the Sega Genesis Classics Hub (Sega Mega Drive Classics Hub in PAL regions). The application presents a virtual hub, themed after what a bedroom of a Sega fanatic might be like, to play all of the released Sega Genesis games through it. This will enable these games to have Steam Workshop support, supporting ROM hacks for these games; within a day of its release, previously developed ROM hacks were added by users to the Hub's Workshop.[1] Sega states that players that have already purchased Sega Genesis games receive them for free for use in the Hub.A few weeks following the release of the Hub, Sega reported more than 350,000 new purchases of the various games supported by the new software.
Sega released a compilation of all of the games included in compilations listed below with some exceptions in an entry simply titled Sega Genesis Classics (Sega Mega Drive Classics in PAL regions) for Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, PlayStation 4, Xbox One on May 29, 2018. It uses the same interface as Sega Genesis Classics Hub

Most games are the ones developed in-house by SEGA it seems. Probably a way cheaper way of getting out a collection than to get the rights for games from Disney and other studios. They probably had to include some of those third party games for the mini to justify the price though.
Now this is how you do a review for a game like this! I was wondering what all xame with it and several reviews just read out the names. You did it perfectly! The games and the gameplay so I can see what I'd be getting.

I really dig the rewind feature here but I also experienced a fair amount of lag during my time playing with the online features. It was nice that they included some ways to mix up the boarders/presentation though. And I still think it's a pretty good value despite my relative unfamiliarity with classic Genesis titles. Nice box shots at the beginning dude :D

And in my opinion about the lag when going online,maybe what they were trying to do was say that couch-coop is better than online because for us that are older will start to feel nostalgic about how you meet your best friend and how you guys would chill and play games. Excellent collection but left out Thunder force 4, Stryder , Castelvania, Contra corps, Gaiares, Mortal Kombat 1,2,3 , Ninja Turtles, Nba hang on.
Maybe we will get some of those on the Sega Genesis mini , I know that Castelvania Bloodlines has been officially announced for it so that's good news.

I really liked your review. Good work ! I appreciate the montage at the end. I just bought this for Switch & enjoying it very much. Some things that bug me :
There's No Game Instructions/ No Manuals , which is a little frustrating if playing these games for the first time.
Lack of game box art , you don't get to see the front of the box art. WTF ? It would have been better if you could see the game box art Front & Back. What were they thinking ? It's a little difficult finding games when looking through the way they're displayed, a slight strain on the eyes and very very DARK . They should have been much larger & easier on the eyes. Perhaps there should have been the ability to customize the viewing options of the game library.
Lastly, as a newcomer to most of these games, it would have been good if the games genres were noted. I think when you have a 50+ compilation, you need a filter for quick navigation through the genre's, it would be great to know which games are RPG'S & which are PLATFORMERS, etc. It's unusual these features were left out, I don't think it's asking too much or unreasonable. Still, I really like this collection and hope to see more of these game collections in future. .
These are all great notes. Hopefully sega will do an updated version with some changes.

Solid collection of games, I hear the downside is that audio emulation is sometimes off.
Sometimes but they have worked out some alot of the bugs.
Think people dont realise is that even back then, on the og console games had lag. Rev shinobi defo had lag i remember it.

Man just got mine Awesome 😎 my First console was the Genesis I had to beg for one for Christmas but it started me on my Video Game journey when you got very little allowance and had to choose your games wisely Thank goodness for my cousin in Nashville he sent me all his old games and Streets of Rage 2 changed my life I still rock to Go Straight 👍Man you were cool when you had your own Tv in your room 😄kids are so spoiled nowadays 😐

The rewind and the online play feature I thought was amazing. My biggest complaints (though it does not make the game bad at all) is the lack of certain games on the console version that were on the Steam version like Ecco and Ecco Tides of Time and of course SONIC 3 AND KNUCKLES and no extensive trophy system for each game instead of picking and choosing, and of course the

it has a double jump and its totally playable but speed runners might notice a split second delay

Like everyone else...Earthworm Jim and Mortal Kombat are conspicuous in their absence. I also would have liked to see Chakan The Forever Man and maybe a pro wrestling title?

I liked the review. I will probably pick this up at some point when I see it on the cheap. It is good but some of the glitches that some of the games have make it worth it on the cheap only to me.
It a great price for all those games and hopefully they fix the online lag.
I bought this title a while back and I have yet to give it a thorough playthrough because I don't remember these games being this difficult to play. I used to play "Shining in the Darkness" a TON. I was great at this game. These types of games are my bread and butter. However, I start SIND on this set and I can't get past two sets of slime without dying right off the bat? No way did I die this fast back in the day.
Thinking that maybe I was just a little rusty, I tried other games. Same deal. Can't get past a few baddies before I get obliterated. This brings me to what I have learned about "roms" of these classic games. The people who made these titles available for PS4 (even the people who made roms playable on PC) have increased the difficulty of all these classics. I once heard that people who downloaded roms for the PC's were complaining that these games were way too easy, so they increased the difficulty. Don't know if this is true, but I tend to believe it because I was NEVER this bad at these classics. Not once.
My verdict. These games have been destroyed by those who wanted to increase difficulty, making them no longer fun to play. I keep installing and uninstalling this set but I end up deleting them all over again because I just can't get past a few baddies without dying many times. Especially in SIND. That game was so worn on my Genesis that the board was rattling inside the cartridge. But I loved it. I beat it. I was good at it. This monstrosity included in this set? This is NOT my Shining in the Darkness game that I grew up playing. I don't know what it is, but it is horrible and I refuse to play it again.
Honestly, I'm not sure there are some frame rate issues but I'm not sure if they changed the difficulty but might be worth looking into.
@@mediaglitch Yes, I do remember that they upscaled the difficulty in roms because people thought they were too easy. I would definitely look into it. It wouldn't surprise me if it were true. I mean, I LOVE Shining in the Darkness, but it's just not fun anymore because I die right away. Not only that, but many of my hits are misses and every single time I encounter an enemy, they #1, hit first, all the time, and #2, they land a hit nearly 90% of the time while you land hits maybe 60% of the time. Something happened in the porting process and I don't think it was good. I literally cannot advance to another level of the dungeon because I die in less than a few minutes. This game was NOT this bad before.
I would've liked to see The Lost Vikings in here. That game was so good

I'm enjoying the collection, but missed the full screen and Sonic 1 had blocky bits. The 360 version didn't have that also on the original cartridge for Megadrive.

I miss having Phantasy Star on the collection as well, but it was probably left off because M2 had the rights to it and was working on the superior, newly enhanced Sega Ages Phantasy Star for the Nintendo Switch...it was the first game that I bought and beat when I got my Switch and I'm immensely happy with the way that it turned out, and if I want to play all of the Phantasy Stars in one collection I still have Sonic's Genesis Collection on my PS3 and the 2018 AtGames Genesis Flashback.

I really liked this collection and I think it's worth the $30 price tag *only if you never played or own the one on the ps3/360* but if you do then I recommend you to wait for a price drop as this collection is very lacking right of now compared to the ultimate genesis collection even though it had a few games that never make it to the previous collections.
also it's been patched now but my progress towards the challenges and trophies progression got erased three times! before I finally plated the collection.

to be more precise two times on my own account ( the first time I played this collection my progress got erased, when I tried again I Plated the game then it erased my stuff again )
and one time in a different account that I'm also working on ( again after reaching halfway through my progress got erased! ) then after that a few days ago they released a patch to fix this stupid problem..... by then I got so tired of trying to beat that stupid challenge of the mean bean machine game again so I left it unfinished, I will return to it...... one day.
the day i make this comment there was an update in the game for new artwork and now i can't get the game window to show up. the steam window says it's running but a window never comes up. i've tried reinstalling and verifying integeraty of game files, and tried putting it in compatability mode for windows xp service pack 3, the game window still won't come up.
Man that sucks Im sorry Im not sure about the steam version of this game but I hope you get it working.
@@mediaglitch I had to update my graphics card drivers after updating windows. it's all good now, but when that did happen none of my dx 9 or open gl games worked along with this game, so i had to download nvidia's program that downloads the latest driver for you, but it's all good now, ty anyway!

I would like to see a few Madden and NHL games. Those were so clutch on Sega. They aren't made by Sega, but at the time those games could only be played on a Genesis.
as for sports games, I would love to see Pat Railys basketball and Tommy lasodrdas baseball and Joe Montanas sports talk football 2

I'm confused. You said the button delay that plagues this collection is a critical disadvantage for these games that rely on surgical platforming like Shinobi. But at the end, you say it's not a game breaking flaw. 🤔
I feel like not all games you need to have very precise action on the buttons. You just have to adjust so if you’re used to speed running a certain game you’re gonna have to adjust to that because its emulation thats not done right but there’s a lot of games on that collection that it doesn’t matter. I still can beat shinobi with the lag but it would be nice if it wasn’t there.
Is there a way to play the steam version with co-op without online like if me and my brother wanna play on the same computer?

Great collection but lack of good online was a big deal breaker for me. At least it has a good set of games, trophies, and a poster that one side is cool on. Btw protip for online, if you're playing on PS4, use Shareplay. MUCH BETTER than the built in Netcode sadly.

That's disheartening to hear about the online lobbies being so laggy. I was looking forward to playing online with someone. I got this day one and have only played Toe Jam and Earl so far. I have two weeks off coming up and am looking forward to playing the crap out of this thing. Hopefully, the lobbies will be stable by then

I bought this for two player online, however trialed it last night. It was very laggy, input lag and buggy. Will try again tomight.

I believe full screen is still 4:3 im not sure because this review was so long ago.
Abysmal input lag makes most all the games UNPLAYABLE = deal breaker.
Online is the worst. the other games are not so bad but I will always play a different version of revenge of Shinobi

Imput lag and absence of pixel perfect scaling are very irritating for me.
I totally understand. I long for a day where we get emulation right and we are playing the classics just like we did back then but on modern hardware.
Ikr input lag especially playing sonic the hedgehog his jumps and the way you move him feels a little off.
This list was a deal breaker! Only game i thought was good was shadow dancer and golden axe revenge of shinobi and golden axe the rest of the list horrid! They left out a ton of great games!

Yeah a buddy of mine showed me this the other day and he even made a mod for me so I could play Mystic Defender. It was pretty awesome.

The Sega Genesis Classics compilation isn't all that great because the online multiplayer sucks, all of the Genesis games suffer from input delay and all of the Genesis games' music, sounds and voices sound horrible. And in the Nintendo Switch version of the Sega Genesis Classics compilation, you cannot invite online friends to play against you or team up together against the CPU in the Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle games.
Yeah it definitly has its issues for sure.

If I were you, I would stick with basic apps on the Nintendo Switch such as the Game Boy/Game Boy Color, Super Nintendo and NES apps. I would rather waste my time with them instead of the expansion pack apps.
No Ecco or sonic 3 sonic and knuckles or batman and Robin or moonwalker
Yeah all of those would have been great games to have on the collection

On my Xbox One the intro slows done for like 30 seconds. Very irritating. I may uninstall it and reinstall it when i get the time. Otherwise, i still find owning the real ones and playing through a CRT a vastly superior experience. Takes time, place and money but worth it. Im thinking stopping buying these compilations.

I own the original system with my personal favorite games, but these collections are fun for the convenience, the extra features, and to check out popular titles that I may have missed out on buying.
