You don't need the insert. They don't fit right, and it works without it.

@@KenGreen-cb9iv update. I bought an insert and cut off the plastic clips inside and it fits but it's super tight. It's nice to have the insert as it punctures the paper top of the bottle but either way the pressure of the water stops the water from overflowing out of the ceramic.

I had something like this but my dad used it for plants and now it broke because when it has water in it and it’s not being used it still somehow leaks through the spout..

I have that same question. Just bought the Dispenser Crock but the protection ring is nothing like this one. This one seems better.
