@@UltraUploadzTwo if I was you I would take a 1 litre of water and half a cup of salt a good shake and then 2 tablespoons of 20% hydrogen peroxide with 1 litre of water another good shake and then 2litres of clean water to rinse , that should clear out your mould Be careful with the peroxide though!

Not sure the rice is ok for the plumbing but is a great idea for scrubbing action. Maybe strain it out through a mesh strainer?? I spray my empty water jugs with white vinegar for storage and then rinse w water just before filling them at the spring. Super simple.
Yup rice will gum and ball up in the plumbing. You'd think it would be wet enough to just disintegrate the rice in a few days to weeks, but it's not. The balls of rice would break down over time, but on a scale of months to years and you'd likely have plumbing issues before that.
Was horrified to see the water and rice mixture dumped down the sink drain. You’ve never had a clogged pipe until you have rice stuck in it. Don’t ask me how I know.🙊
I got very sick from my local community water store. I began feeling very dizzy, having severe trouble remembering, heart thumping and always felt very nauseous. I never went back. I dumped all the water out on my yard. I'm going to report them to the health department. Thank you. Very professional. I don't think I'm going to buy local water anymore. I heard from a comment in another video that using rice or corn kernals will cause small groves that help bacteria grow easier. And that bleach doesn't get rid of all the harmfull bacteria, and that it's best to use a small amount of ammonia.
What we really need is a bigger mouth able to let me put my arm in the bottle to wash inside and rinse /wipe it dry. Then reattach the smaller mouth or spout for pouring. Same problems with tall glasses or any containers with small openings that you cannot scrub insides at all! This is what matters. no bull about it.

We let industrialization and profits lead us to creating products we didn't understand and still don't fully understand. Like how these microplastics effect our physiology. It's going to take decades to centuries to have a full picture of microplastics effects on the human body and other animal's bodies.

This seems like the most thorough and effective jug cleaning method. When you say to rinse it several times after the bleach mix was in it overnight. Do you literally mean seven times? Thank you.
I don't feel comfortable using bleach. I like the distilled white vinegar better. Plus, rice isn't necessarily clean, which is why I rinse before cooking. So I saw a video using unpopped corn kernals to cause friction.

Doesn’t everyone have a drain-stopper/strainer to collect the rice as it is poured out of the bottle? I’ve always had a sink stopper that would allow water to drain yet collect food etc so it does not go down the drain. Just put that in your sink drain before starting to clean the water jugs. Very simple logical solution to the issue ! Then just put the drained rice into the trashcan.

Great video! I have a converted cargo trailer in which I use 2 six gallon jerrican style water containers. One of those has a hose to which I've coupled a galley foot pump so it needs no electricity to pump water to the faucet. The hose from the water container to the pump and the pump to the faucet is my main concern. How do I properly disinfect that system. I think the procedures you outlined in the video are great for the water container itself but I do worry about the rest of it. I'm new to this, and only just installed this system a few weeks ago. I haven't used it yet on a real trip. Also, I live in Las Vegas where the summer heat is intense. Is there anything I can do to keep the water fresh or should I just empty the containers after every trip? Any insights you have will be very welcome!

So apparently I was disinfecting my canteens the wrong way for the 30 years I spent in the military. -Fill with tepid water, -A few drops of bleach (nonscented) -15-30 minutes soaking -Rinse -Air dry or refill
This wasn't just about sanitizing it was about cleaning. Like if you live in the country and you have used your bottles to store tap water for some reason, like we did....you need something with grit tho scrape off that sludge. Back in the day when I worked at Mc Donalds, during the closing clean up, we would use salt and ice cubes to clean the glass coffee decanter. Same premise here.

Once the bottles have had their overnight chlorine soak, and you've rinsed them out until you can't smell bleach, do you need to let them air dry if you're planning on refilling them immediately (within an hour or so)?
That occurred to me too. Maybe pour out the water through a strainer to catch the rice. You might need to set the strainer down and use some other item to keep it in position so the strainer doesn't fall over, since you'll probably need both hands to hold the water jug.

What was the concentration of bleach liquid? When left overnight, the water bottle should be full to allow chlorine to come in contact with whole surface.
Mac and July I went to a place where you can get spring water for just throwing a handful of change in this tub and you can get all the spring water you want for free but it's 30 foot from a cornfield which I didn't think anything about and when I got home and started using that water made my lips feel really icky and my gums and my dog wouldn't drink it and come to find out it's loaded with pesticides probably from that cornfield. Can I reclaim them with dish soap hot water and rice or corn kernels or do I need to throw the five and three gallon bottles away and just get new ones?

I want to store water for emergencies. I was thinking of a 3 week supply in case of a disaster, such as an ice storm. I was thinking of water for flushing the toilet, personal hygeine and cooking with non-electrical appliances. When I purchase a new 5 gallon jug from Canadian Tire, do I need to do this? I am on a well, so I wonder if the procedure changes. Is there a product I should add ?
Be careful with bleach. Many now contain other laundry chemicals and are not food grade. And yes Gary , don’t do this sanitizing step with your best clothes on 😢
And vinegar WON'T kill as many types of bacteria as bleach. For instance the bacteria associated with human poop isn't properly killed by vinegar.....this is why it can't be officially labeled as a "disinfectant" same with ammonia it kills a lot but not enough to be labeled as a disinfectant though.
How will bleach disinfect upper part of the jug, if it is not full? Exposure time to bleach will be very different for upper and lower parts. So if there is bacteria film, they can withstand this sanitation.

No, several times, like 2 or 3 should do.

Vinegar is not an approved product for killing bacteria in water, which is why I use chlorine in the video.

As long as you use chlorine to disinfect the garden hose is fine.
Tried the method but now it seems the smell of chlorine doesn't seem to go away, even after repeated rinses. Any ideas?
Yes, you can fill the container with tap water and leave it over night to neutralize the chlorine and then dump it.
You can also try using an air stone and pump for an aquarium that will help get those pesky chlorine molecules to exit the bottle

Does it have to dry overnight before you can fill it up? It would be a big deal just filling it after rinsing out the bleach water?
Ideally yes. If you fill it right away you might smell or taste the chlorine in your water.

No since you splashed the chlorinated water around and kept the cap on it isn’t necessary
FYI. Vinegar stops bleach &/or soap chemical reaction. We rinse ours with it :)

Most of these water bottles say (drinking water only ) are they made to hold bleach water overnight without affecting chemical make up of plastic?
Also you don’t need to leave bleach in there that long. Five minutes would be plenty to kill all the bacteria. Read the label on the bottle.

I have had problems with little white specks in the water.
You need to check with whoever you get the water from.
Mac and July I went to a place where you can get spring water for just throwing a handful of change in this tub and you can get all the spring water you want for free but it's 30 foot from a cornfield which I didn't think anything about and when I got home and started using that water made my lips feel really icky and my gums and my dog wouldn't drink it and come to find out it's loaded with pesticides probably from that cornfield. Can I reclaim them with dish soap hot water and rice or corn kernels or do I need to throw the five and three gallon bottles away and just get new ones?
If you want to salvage them you would need to follow the procedure in the video using chlorine. I would just throw them away and get new ones.

Yes, you would use less bleach proportionately. Any bleach will work fine, I use Chlorox.

@@flynnsylvest257 my thinking is to make up the bigger jug first with the gallon and tablespoon and then pour some into the smaller one instead of just pouring it down the drain. I will be watching for Gary's answer to your good question.

Likely the bottles are new and not rinsed out or you have left water in those bottles too long!

I want to store water for emergencies. I was thinking of a 3 week supply in case of a disaster, such as an ice storm. I was thinking of water for flushing the toilet, personal hygeine and cooking with non-electrical appliances. When I purchase a new 5 gallon jug from Canadian Tire, do I need to do this? I am on a well, so I wonder if the procedure changes. Is there a product I should add ?

You're gonna want to use a fine strainer to catch the rice. Rice is not meant to be in your drain sink

Doubt that it would fit and the hot water would likely melt it.
Be careful with bleach. Many now contain other laundry chemicals and are not food grade. And yes Gary , don’t do this sanitizing step with your best clothes on 😢

Great and informative video! However, can I just use like a tablespoon of vinegar OR some vodka to disinfect my nalgene?
Vinegar is good for destroying bacterial films, but alcohol is not good desinfectant. There are bacterias that alcohol can't kill.
And vinegar WON'T kill as many types of bacteria as bleach. For instance the bacteria associated with human poop isn't properly killed by vinegar.....this is why it can't be officially labeled as a "disinfectant" same with ammonia it kills a lot but not enough to be labeled as a disinfectant though.
How will bleach disinfect upper part of the jug, if it is not full? Exposure time to bleach will be very different for upper and lower parts. So if there is bacteria film, they can withstand this sanitation.
The chlorine mixed with the water will disinfect after shaking the jug.
