Great progress today, well done. I admire the way you narrate so calmly as you go along, not one swear word (Is that a side effect of Stella!!) I bet that beard was pop rivetted on (and fibre glassed over). As always good luck from Spain!!
Yeah, I am not OK with swearing in public. I actually stopped watching a few channels even though they were interesting to watch, but I couldn't stand the language... Not that I don't swear quietly in my mind LOL
Personally I had grown used to the beard so anticipate regrowth later in the year when the weather turns colder ! Regardless of how much fettling is needed on these replacement panels, we should be ever grateful that so much is still available nearly 50 years since the last of these Triumphs rolled off the production line. Looking forward to the next steps in your restoration.
That was exactly the plan :) Summer is coming and my beard started bothering me, but it will probably come back in the fall, as I am too lazy to deal with it LOL
You probably know this, but making a 60s Spitfire metal to fit like a Mercedes is asking a lot Of a design from government run designers. That it fits at all is a small miracle, but to make it perfect is no small feat. Love your work, is fun to watch, and learning lots!
Haha totally had me... I was trying to figure out how you might have hoodwinked a floor panel replacement or learn you boys or dog did some of the work... Glad to see you persevering!
No need to hide behind a bush, Elin! You look great, young and refreshing clean shaven. I'm wondering whether you used Bondo or lead to cover it up. .... That GT6 is going to have panels that fit like my MB 300! What an amazing job you are doing. Thanks for the update.
I actually find myself looking older without it. I was surprised how much my face changed when I shaved it. I was looking at some of my old friends faces on FB and noticed how much they changed and now I realize that it happened to me too..... LOL
Nice one Elin. That car is really coming together. Had my MG rebuild out of the road today after a 1 year rebuild. Turns out the servo is shot as well as the mc, so another few hundred to spend yet...!
you need to lift the hood flat..hook front and back in 4 points to be stable and you can lift or replace it safely...without scratching it or denting it .. you might need a cradle under it to do it ( simple wood frame ) ...👍
@@RustyBeauties it makes it easier regardless...i ran cranes for 30 plus years...lifting stuff that had to not get damaged...but safety is important..so you sling it to Control it ...
Coming along nicely... I think with the valance fitment on that corner it has maybe got bent somehow ? Looks like the outer end hd been pushed in , and he inner end has been pushed out ? Or something...
I wonder if you cooling the weld with the air line, its shrinking on the side you hit with the air? Daft as it sounds.... Maybe (where you can) you should cool from the back...!!
I don't think so. I was watching a lot of welding videos lately and I realize that it always happens and it always needs planishing. Even pros like Wray Schelin planish their welds to make them straight again. The videos where people show you a perfect surface after grinding are probably skipping this part.
Also everyone makes a big deal of only using 0.6mm (0.023") wire in their MIG's. Apparently it heats the panel a lot less. Are you per chance using 0.8mm (0.031") wire?🤔
@@garysweetland32 I was using 0.6 wire before and just recently switched to 0.8 I find it works better for me. It just feels easier to weld, but my panels warp with both thicknesses so I don't think that is the reason.
Hey Elin! I know you mentioned a while back but maybe you’ve upgraded. What kind of camera and microphone and editing software are you using now? The quality was always great but it just seems so much crisper.
For the last 3-4 years I actually use just my phone. I found out the quality is so much better than my expensive DSLRs I used to use before. I had an iPhone 10 and maybe 6 months ago I switched to iPhone 13pro looking for a better video quality, but I was surprised it didn't improve much. Just recently I realized that it was my mistake. I was shooting in HD quality and even tried 4K. However while downloading the videos the quality was automatically reduced to 720p, which I didn't know. So all my videos were in 720p until recently. When I realized that, I found a way to download the clips from my phone in the original quality, but then it turned out my editing software was not handling them very well and I had to get a new software. That worked well and finally now my videos are in full HD quality. So that is the change you are seeing probably. Most of the times I use the iPhone mic too, it is a very good quality, but wen I have background noises like the garage heater in the winter or the fan in the summer the iPhone is not very good in canceling those so I use a Rode Wireless GO microphone, which is eliminating them very well. However it is a mono sound so I only use it in noisy environment.
@@RustyBeauties I was hearing the same things from others about the IPhone. I have an 11 and find it does great and the stabilization is superior. Your videos are very clear in video and audio and it doesn’t matter if I’m watching on my phone or my big screen. Thanks for answering!
Hey Elin, who was more surprised with the new look, your girlfriend or Rusty? lol Question - When you order raw sheet metal, what do you specify? Guage and hardness or what? On my 67' GT6, I am sure I will try to fab some patches instead of ordering pieces mostly.
Rusty was with me in the bathroom when I got rid of the beard so it happened gradually for him LOL. My girlfriend was surprised and asked me where I've been for the last year LOL I just ask for 18GA cold rolled Sheetmetal, not galvanized of course or any other coating.
Hi Elin, are you going to modify the lower right corner below the catch to make it match the sill, I always thought the rounded edge was an afterthought by triumph, I am unsure whether that mod has been done here in the UK, either way I wish you all the best, thanks for another awesome video, hope you and your family are well, looking forward to seeing your next video, many thanks
I modified that on my Spitfire years ago, but it is risky as if you have the doors slightly open (which you shouldn't in any case) and close the bonnet, that corner makes a really nice scratch on them LOL. I am not sure if the rounded corner eliminates that risk, but this is the reason why it was rounded by Triumph. I guess we will find out on this car.

Looking sharp now Elin 😀 thx
The joys of aftermarket panels. But you told it who's boss.
I think planishing that weld will reduce the distortion.

Oh, yeah, I know they didn't fir well out of the factory, but now that I am on it, t would be a shame not to take care of all gaps.

Looking goooood !

🤪
Good call on the whiskers; I hope you used a new cutting disc as it was so bushy.
LOL, I was actually thinking of making a joke about that.... like using the grinder to shave, but then I left it out...

Yep, they always need something :)
Look's Great!!!
Nice work! Despite your self criticism, it looks very good.
I must say Elin, you look 10 years younger without that wooly bully bush on your face. Now let’s get crack-a-lackin and make that GT6 look as good. 😊
Didn't realise Dave Gahan likes welding old Triumphs.
LOL

At this point it is not such a big deal. When it is at a later stage I will be more careful with it of course.

In case you are aware of Carter Auto Restyling, he had an interesting show on May 8, 2022.

We will get to it at some point. I can see it has lots of problems too
Ok, ok, bring back the real Elin!
I miss him too
Great without the beard again Elin! (You almost look 35 again) 😊😊😊
Naah, I fond out my face changed a lot since I've last seen it :)
Watching you remove the bonnet alone reminds us all that we’re useless to you as virtual friends.

Well that blows the theory 😂😂
Holy shit Elin, grow it back for sakes 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I know right? I liked it better before
This guy's got geometry jokes! lol
And algebra jokes too.... Why is 8 afraid of 7? Because 7 ate 9 LOL
👍👍🙂
It must be the weather.....two days ago I did the same thing and shaved off my beard. Now I only have a long stubble.
Exactly... with the warm weather it started bothering me.
I think the english cars are handmade and so you have tolerance. If you make it the same part to part it´s okay in my opinion.
