reached 30 months two weeks ago or so and I've found the hardest things are giving serious answers to questions like "how do you wash your hair"... I feel obligated to give an answer like "WITH THE BLOOD OF MY NEMESIS"

Worked at a summer camp and got tired of answering the "how did you get your hair like that?" question... My answers my the end of the summer involved squirrels, electrocution and/or "I was born this way".

Hi! I am in the process of dreading my hair. it's taking me about a week to do. already getting the "you're ruining your hair!" "you'll have to shave your head!" "dreads are dirty!" comments... but i've been embracing a more minimalist life style for a few years now and i feel dreads take me further in that direction. your videos have helped 110% at pros/cons and methods and care. i really appreciate it! your dreads are lovely! thanks for all your videos!

U do not have to shave yr head. I've had dreads 4 times for over a year an each time, with very long hair, I've combed it out. It takes a lot of patience however. And I'd suggest a product called infusium23 for the final comb. I usually start conditioning for a few weeks and then when they're loose do the final comb.

My dreads are 1 week old. I had SUPER slick & straight hair prior to my "baby dreads". The frizz is the most difficult to adjust to mainly bc my hair was SO different before. I do find the change to be an oddly refreshing experience😊 I appreciate all of yr educating videos, they have helped me a lot!

Almost 2 months in, I had no idea the amount of research I should have done before hand. I thought it was a hairstyle, not a lifestyle I was getting into. I have curly thick Latin hair, so I actually have less frizz than before the dreads; really curious to see what they look like in 10 months, I will do a before and after as this stage ain't pretty.
I appreciate all the info you're sharing, great stuff I hope you don't cut your dreads off. So many other TH-camrs do that after several videos, they should just delete their channels it's demoralizing for us beginners to see so many just quit. Keep it up!

I started the towel rub method, in August 2021, so that I could get a freeform style dread but I wanted to give them a little kick to urge them to lock up. Anyway after only two months I have a head full of locks. Yes they are young locks but they are locks none the less so they aren't pretty but they are there and getting tighter and better looking, daily, as well.

I've had partial Dreads (only the back of my head dreaded) for about 2 1/2 months now and have extensions. What was a really good surprise to me was that the drying of my dreads doesn't take long, they actually dry faster than my normal hair. The worst thing I still have to get used to is the management of washing partial dreads. The dreads themselves are not the problem, just that I have to wash my "normal" hair more often and thus seperate, and that it is so much more difficult to wash the normal hair. But I think partial dreads, although they're so much more difficult to handle, are the best option for anyone who isn't 100% sure if they can handle/want permanent dreads.

The first 6 months with new deadlocks are the hardest. But then again it is during this period you learn a lot about yourself along with humility and patients. With my first set of dreads. I found that that my tips would not lock up regardless of what I did. About 6 months in I added extensions and my tips connected well with them. So when I made my next set of dreads, which was about 8 months later I added the extensions to keep everything locked and to give some added length to be able to get my hair up and off my neck. Dreads and desert heat don't mix well together!

I've been wanting dreads for some while now. I have been watching your AWESOME informational videos for almost two years now, and I have finally started my own dreadlock journey. I prepped my scalp by washing it less for over a month, and even threw away my hairbrush and only started combing with my fingers. My hair is naturally curly and a frizzy mess but it never seemed to tangle... until I started putting in a few dreads on one side of my head.
I'm now nine days in and nine dreadlocks in. I currently have to CONSTANTLY separate my natural hair from my dreads! Little sections of my natural hair that have tight curls are starting to dread at the roots. It's mildly frustrating because I'm constantly battling; I'm nervous if I just let the rest of my hair naturally dread up, I'll have oddly placed dreads and possible bald spots because of all my curly cowlicks I have!
Question: Should I continue to separate and dread my natural hair? Or just allow it to take its course?! HELP!

mine are 2 days old and I noticed some sections refused to dread like i could twist and ripped and backcombed as much as I wanted to and it didn't help at all so i just did my best or ended up braiding it. But also i find myself being a lot more cautious with putting flowers in my hair cause i love doing that but now i gotta check for bugs more than I normally would. I have gotten strange looks and im starting school in September so they are barley gonna be a month old so it will be interesting to see what people say or how the look cause i have not seen one other person in the whole school with dreads but all in all im so happy i did it and cant wait to see how they turn out in a year from now 💕

To the "how long it takes them to dry... my hair is super thick, large curly and fine in texture. B.D. (before dreadlocks) it could take up to 12 hours for my hair to dry to the roots. I've had my dreads for a year now and when I first made them I was actually surprised about how many problems I DIDN'T have! I washed my hair immediately after I finished them because I had spent four days making them and I couldn't stand it anymore. I also didn't use ties at the roots or ends. They didn't unravel when I washed them. And I've never had any problems with them coming loose. I wash them every other day with a baking soda solution and I'm really pleased with how that works. I shampoo the length once in a while with deep cleansing shampoo. They're really long, down to my butt (all my real hair) so sometimes there's some buildup of baking soda residue. But the only real annoyance I've experienced is having to separate the roots. Ripping my hair is like nails on a chalkboard!

I was wondering what your hair-type was before forming dreads: Did you used to have very dry hair that tangles easily and therefore it was easier for you to get dreads? My hair is very straight and shiny and I have to wash it every 2 days cause it gets oily. It doesn‘t easily tangle or form knots by itself. Would it be stupid for me to try and get Dreads?

@@4dvoc4tethe4byss6 It's straight, thick, kind of dry at the ends but but oily at the scalp so I can't go more than two days without a wash usually. My hair does tangle easily, but at the same time, clips always slide out. Go figure. I definitely wouldn't say it would be stupid for you to try to dread your hair. The method I used was a combination of twist and rip and backcombing. Twist and rip and inch or two, then use a metal (not plastic, it'll break) lice comb to go down the section you just did and pack those knots tight. You'd be amazed how much the section moves up and tightens with this method. I've done my dreads twice now with this method and have had no problems with unraveling. I also do maintenance with a crochet hook to pull in loose pieces.

@@4dvoc4tethe4byss6 Also, I no longer recommend washing dreads with baking soda. It got built up inside and dried them out really bad. Ruined my first set.

haha, that will never go away. A month or so ago my boss and I were working on a job site and the elderly hippie lady homeowner was fascinated with them and asking me all sorts of questions, when she asked about how I wash them my boss interrupted and said "HE DOESN'T!". I just blankly stared at him and asked him "How bad do you think I would smell if I haven't washed my hair every damn day in these last 3 years we've been working together?" The lady laughed her ass off and we went back to talking. lol

I've had my dreadlocks for 5 months now and I find its hard not to reach for the crochet hook. I realised I was using it too much from research so I've completely stopped. Therefore I'm now dealing with massive amounts of loose hair and messiness. It's hard but I know in the months and years to come it will all be worth it in the end.

My dreads are pretty young still. I've had them for a couple weeks now and people are giving me such negative comments. telling me that dreads can't be washed, "I want to take a comb or hair clippers to your head", " you'll never get a job. or don't you want a job?" and so much more. It gets on my nerves and nobody listens to what I have to say when I try to tell them the facts about dreadlocks because apparently "they know better". it's frustrating

In my 8th month now. When I started my hair was all the way down to my hips and now it's around my collarbone. I only have like 23 to 25 dreads so they are very thick. I've always had to actually fight my hair from dreading (multiple uses of conditioner in a single wash + having to comb my hair with conditioner still in it) so they have matured at a rapid pace :D finally letting my hair do what it's always wanted and it's awesome!

My dreads are approx 2months young. I'd say what I didn't expect is that they have eaten themselves. I started with shoulder length hair and used twist and rip. I started to get lumps and bumps after a month. Then the lumps in the middle decided to make 90degree angles. Which then folded in half and got sucked into their dread and tightened from there. So now half of my dreads are approx 3 inches. They are tight, tiny ball like things!! I don't do maintenance besides separating. Im not necessarily freaking out but going from 8-12inches to 2-3 inches in 2 months was definitely a shock. I use Dollylocks shampoo and wash my hair every other day. I know that seems like a lot but it is summer and I work out so I sweat a lot. I think getting wet and drying so much has helped them draw up so much. Plus I don't do anything to protect them when I sleep. I have had zero itching, or dandruff. I HOPE this is okay. I'm going to continue to believe that this is a good thing and let them be. It's about the journey as much as the destination. Your channel/social networks rock! @lazydreads! Thank you for all the help from the Dread Community.
I also have a special needs son and appreciate your work with the Special Olympics.

I've had a full hard for about 3 days and I think the only thing that I didn't really look into before starting was how messy they look as fresh dreads. Just all the little fly aways. I think other than that I had prepared a Lil bit and was used to having an irritated scalp anyway so it's not too different. Im prepared for all the looks and people assuming they know better but frankly I don't care im sooo happy I love them.

I just started dreads 5 days ago for the 1st time. My hair is super silky and difficult to get a dread started so I sectioned and held at the roots with rubberbands and then used the twist and rip method and applied Jamaican lime locking gel afterward. Then I wore a hat for 4 days and took the rubber bands out and backcombed... they seem to be holding and coming along well but I definitely look a tad ridiculous currently lol

My baby dreads were thin, long and easy to work with. I'm 8 months in and they are fat and short. I lost half of my length and have dreads that are 3x the thickness. That surprised me. I was also surprised at how readily the dreads formed, especially advancing after swimming.

I just started my journey for the second time on July 14th of this year! My hair is definitely getting nappy and I'm pretty excited so far. My hair is pretty short, maybe like 5 inches or so, but I have curly/wavy hair and they are heavily damaged with bleach so it's sectioning and dreading pretty quickly. I am doing a neglect method, and whenever they do try to merge, I'll be separating them. Because of job situation, I'm trying to keep my hair looking neat as possible. I'll say that's my only difficulty I'm facing so far.

Wassup man, how has your journey been so far? I did mine 2 weeks ago, I've already washed them once, but I'm afraid that some of them are washing out (2 of them are really really small but I'd say 2-3 inches long and I have really straight and soft hair). My roots on the back of my head are straight hair too (too much compared to the front ones, 1 inch of straight hair) should I worry?
