If it's not too much work, it might be worthwhile to make a separate "best wedding" dress video so your white dresses video isn't completely overwhelmed with gorgeous white wedding dresses.
oh my gosh if padme doesn’t have one single appearance in this series (her blue funeral gown would be my top pick) i am going to throw hands. edit: i’m an idiot. me, a person who has watched all the new best dress of each color videos as they came out and seen the old ones too, did not realize padme was *front and center* on the thumbnail for red.
Agreed I would of at least wanted more of a direct nod to the picnic dress besides a few seconds of screen time, I was lucky enough to see the traveling costume exhibit and it’s far more exquisite in person, but I also wonder what color she would qualify Padme’s lakeside dress as
I don't think it can ever be overstated how incredible the costume designs were in Mirror Mirror (2012) and Crimson Peak (2015), so here's to another chance to re-bestow their due praise. 🥂🏆
Yellow is such an underrated colour in cinema, along with orange. However, if you don’t include the green dress Kiera Knightley wears in Atonement, you will never hear the end of it 😂 the dress actually came up in my film course when discussing viral fashion moments in cinema
lol not to be THAT person but are you talking about cher’s blazer/skirt combo? i guess it’s not technically a dress but you’re right it is so iconic i don’t think i’ve ever seen someone wear anything like it without it being a direct reference to clueless
the fact that Belle’s live-action dress could even fit in the yellow category is a crime itself😭 the dress was always supposed to be gold it’s just an incredibly hard color to create in animation.
Such a disappointment as they could have used the theme parks or Broadway versions as a starting point or use more than one shade of yellow to make it less flat That said with the Beauty and the Beast musical that toured Ireland last year did an amazing job with the ballgown, it was stunning on the actress
As a brown person you don't know the immense amount of happiness you make me radiate everytime you mention our culture and fashions, Tessa 💋 Also the terminology and pronunciation of the words was perfect. You clearly know your stuff! 🪔🥻⚱️
Aishwarya Rai's yellow saree in Jodhaa Akbhar is iconic and very beautiful. I love Frida Pinto's yellow top in that one scene from Slumdog Millionaire at the train meet-up scene with Jamal gone wrong along with her yellow silk scarf along with her white top towards the end of the movie. Lastly, Raveena and Kajol's yellow sarees in K3g and Mohra in both songs tip tip barsa Pani and suraj hua Madham are so beautiful and are one of my fav sarees in Bollywood. I also forgot to mention that Belle's yellow dress in both live action and animation are my favs as well.
When you said yellow, the two outfits you picked from Indian cinema is what popped into my mind, those were two of the most iconic yellow looks in Bollywood. This proves you know your stuff. Definitely did not disappoint.
Ishioka's costume designs are insane, her death was truly a loss, not just in film's costume design, but design and art all over. Her body of work is so influential before she even stepped foot into film. That yellow coat in Mirror Mirror is truly iconic. The costuming in Crimson Peak is also not just beautiful and intricate, but also highly symbolic and reflective of the characters' emotional states. I'm also glad Mia Wasikowska did this film and brought Edith to life before she decided to move away from Hollywood and back to Australia.
I love that yellow is a popular choice for dresses in movies that have big dance sequences. Speaking as a dancer, it's such a fun color to wear and you really do feel your mood elevate when you're twirling around in a gorgeous yellow ensemble. I love seeing that reflected in so many movies on this list. :)
I cannot be happier for the Jodha Akbar Cameo, and rhe double Bollywood feature as well!! Some additional context as to why Jodha wears Yellow is a direct reference to her devotion to Krishna, her deity who she turns to when she's mostly in distreas. Even Krishna himself is traditionally shown wearing Yellow dhoti, a garment, tied pleated and tucked between the legs to form a pant silhouette and an occasional decorative fan in the front. Also, Jodha is a Rajput, a dynasty whose emblem was the sun, further aligning to her character being bold, outspoken, virtuous and brilliant as it is her brilliance that motivates akbar to become a well lived emperor in the movie
I’m not sure how groundbreaking this dress was, but the green dress Natalie Portman wears in The Other Boleyn Girl has always had a chokehold over me. Oh, and the green dress Kiera Knightly wears in Atonement 🥵🥵🥵🥵
Cher's yellow plaid blazer and skirt will forever be iconic. You just can't imagine it being red or blue, the other colours tested. Yellow certainly is Alicia Silverstone's colour! 💛😍
One of my favourite dresses of all time is one of Scarlett O'Hara's other green dresses. The curtain dress is probably more iconic because it's an important plot point. But later on she's wearing this green gown that's split down the middle. I think it's more of an extremely ornate dressing gown. But I've thought about that dress often. She looked amazing in green.
The green dancing costume that Madhuri Dixit wore for "Maar Dala" in Devdas is the most iconic green outfit that I can think of in an Indian movie. She literally transforms and asks who has turned her green. When it came out Devdas was the most expensive Bollywood movie ever made, largely bc of the costumes.
Was pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of Jessica's yellow veiled dress from Dune on this list! I found the costume design on that movie in general was understated, but beautiful. This was the look that stunned me though, especially in theaters where you get the full effect of the billowing fabric... Super memorable.
Tessa, you legend! I’m amazed and so glad that the yellow saree from Mohra is on your list. On a related note, I enjoy it when I see costumes from Bollywood films in your list. It’s clear how much you appreciate them, and the level of research that’s been done on their cultural impact as well. Since you mentioned that the next video will be on green dresses, I will be surprised if I don’t see Chandramukhi’s ‘Maar Dala’ anarkali outfit from Devdas (2002).
For iconic green dresses, my pick is Kajol's green attire from the bollywood movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). It was really a trendsetter in the 90s.
The one dress that I thought was missing from this video was Emma Stone's La La Land dress. Th juxtaposition of the dark blue night and the vibrant shade of this dress is just beautiful.
So excited to see a new colour featured in the series! I’m biased towards Hindi cinema so a shoutout to Sridevi in the song ‘Mitwa’ with the iconic yellow saree.
I can’t wait for the rest of the colours, I just find it interesting to see, what dresses Tessa likes and why she likes them, and gives multidimensional input about the dresses she features in the video.
What I love about these videos, apart from the beautiful costumes shown, is how they introduce me to films/tv I otherwise would probably not have heard of. The series that you mentioned for the second dress is going on my "to watch" list immediately!
I remember screaming with joy when I first saw Anita’s yellow dress in the new West Side Story. She really stole the show in every scene she was in. As she should!
For green dresses, I like the dresses in the bamboo forest in House of Flying Daggers, the Handmaiden, Cate Blanchet’s dresses in 2015 Cinderella, the mint green dress Mina wore in Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
The Best Dresses by Color are my very favorite videos that you do. Yellow is an often overlooked color as not many people have the complexion to wear it.💛
I really do not believe it should matter whether or not movies are duplicated in each color. If it’s the most iconic, it’s the most iconic. I’m not here to see dresses that I have no idea about in order to avoid duplicating a certain movie; I’m here to see ICONIC outfits.
I cannot believe you showed the yellow dress Padme Amidala worn but didn't included it. That dress is literally one of the most memorable outfit Natalie Portman has ever put on during her Star Wars years. I mean its so iconic that till this day, you can still see a tons of cosplayers recreating that specific dress. And the romantic medieval inspiration that the dress has was so perfect for that scene with Anakin.
If we are going into green, my favorite will forever be Cyd Charisse in Singing in the Rain, with the green stockings and shoes! Amazing. Also love the green dress in Cleopatra tho
I know I've already said this on other videos in this series, but thank you so so so much for including Indian films in your list! For green, Madhuri's dress in the dance scene for Maar Dala is iconic. The scene begins with a bet between Chandramukhi (Mashuri) and a wealthy man over whether Devdas will arrive or not. He orders her to remove her veil and dance for him, she refuses to dance until Devdas arrives. The man insists Devdas will never come, because he still loves his childhood sweetheart, Paro. It turns into a bet. If Devdas does not arrive by the time a candle burns out, she must put on dancing bells he bought for her and dance for the wealthy man (the implication being that she must sleep with him). If he does arrive, the wealthy man must leave wearing the dancing bells himself, which would humiliate him. Hence when Devdas does arrive, she reaches for the bells... not to put them on but to begin tapping out the beat to the music before she casts off her dark red dupatta in a stunning shock of green. His arrival proves his love for her. As she begins dancing for Devdas, she motions through her dancing for the wealthy man to leave, casting death stares his way without missing a beat until he does. The color of the gown is even referenced in the song, imply that Devdas has "painted" her in green. The costume was visually referenced recently in "Polite Society" with that actress actually doing fight scenes in it, which looked amazing with the sheer embroidered skirt. Many of the most elaborate outfits in Bollywood are also incredibly HEAVY! Madhuri's green anarkali alone was said to weigh over 30 pounds. Other outfits have gone as high as 50 or 60 pounds, similar in weight to what men would have worn for armor.
I love the costume designs for that film! Both the guys' & gals' outfits (on the floor & off it) were designed so carefully to reflect their character progressions and alignments. Would love to see a Style Analysis episode on that film.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I NEW the Crimson Peak dress would appear. I was so compelled by the costuming, I bought the film art book, highly recommend it to any who either enjoyed the film or who have an interest in gothic/horror art. It's a beautiful concept book.
The green dress video absolutely has to include the emerald green sequined dress worn by Cyd Charisse during the Broadway Melody Ballet sequence in Singin’ in the Rain! The way it sparkles and moves and pops off the red background as she dances is mesmerizing! 💚
Dune's aesthetic is so sick!! Also this is my favorite of the colored dress videos so far, though yellow is far from a favorite color of mine. Thank you for sharing
For a green dress I always get reminded of the green velvet dress that Constance Hazard wears - it was the inspiration for my mom's wedding dress, because she wore a green velvet bodice (with a white skirt), and that original dress hasn't let me go since my mom told me, because ever since then I've loved green velvet dresses myself hahahah
Rachel Weisz's green dress as the wicked witch on the film Oz, the great and powerful is one of the reasons why green is one of my favourite colours today.. I hope it's included on the next video!
I loved Padme's floral dress from Attack of the Clones. It's def my favorite outfit of hers and I'm glad it at least got a visual mention in the video.
Anne of the Thousand Days had a lovely yellow dress, which highlighted her youth, energy and innocence before the king’s intentions for her were known.
Glenn Close's riding habit in Dangerous Liaisons...yellow + black combo made me think of things that sting. Like yellow and black in nature signal danger. Yellow jackets (wasps), bees, etc.
Cannot wait for the Green Dress video! Stealthily, green may be one of the best in the series, there's so many great candidates. For me, I instantly went to Pirtrait of a Lady on Fire (gorgeous, somehow feels like the fabric is straight out of a painting) and Cate Blanchett's Green Dress in Cinderella (amazing entrance, styled perfectly with the jewlery + Blanchett's red hair). If we're talking Iconic Yellow Dresses, it's hard to beat the Clueless Yellow Ensamble. I'm convinced if you want to homage clueless, all you gotta do is include that pattern somewhere and our minds just naturally go back to clueless. But personally, the Dangerous Liaisons dress is my fave, helped by being the focus of one of my favorite shots in cinema when Glenn Close gets out of the carriage. Honorable mention to the West Side Story dress, that pop of red is gorgeous, though I'm equally a fan of the black dress she wears later in the film.
I’m so stoked you mentioned Dangerous Liaisons and my favorite dress from the movie! I always wondered if the pairing of the yellow and black was to compare her a bubble bee. At first seeming warm and fuzzy, but then proceeding to “sting” Cecile throughout the whole scene. Just a theory.
The yellow dress from La la Land that Mia wears while dancing in A Lovely Night has been seared in my brain ever since I first saw that movie. When I think yellow dress I instantly think La la land now
ALSO you absolutely must do a series on GOLD dresses and include the gold outfit from Bajirao Mastani for the song Dewani Mastani. Not only is her gown a stunning antique gold that swirls beautifully as she dances, with the background dancers in a peachy gold tone, the entire set is a gold room covered in mirrors. Mastani's gold outfit is one of the most common Bollywood costume recreations I've ever seen, with tons of videos on youtube attempting to recreate the look, and was actually officially recreated for sale to the public by an Indian fashion company called Anju Modi. They have an entire series of recreated clothing from the movie, but the gold dress is by far the most iconic.
I was having a truly rubbish day and then the facts from Dangerous Liasons, how those costumes were reuswd blew my mind 🤯 thanks for a superb video ✨🌼☀️
I know they are in black and white but I sincerely hope that some of Ginger rodgers dresses by Bernard Newman get mentioned in these videos. Especially the feathred one from Top Hat, The pink one with all the ruffles from Swing Time, and the one she wears near the end of Swing Time with the cape. In color that one is gold. The way Bernard Newman constructed all her danceing gowns made them even fuller and flowyer than circle skirts and I think those designs are criminaly underrated.
My jaw dropped n heart stopped when I saw the yellow coronation gown from the Young Victoria! A similar design, esp for the bodice, would have been perfect for the live action B&B film. Alas, maybe in another universe that featured Emmy Rossum as Belle instead 🌹💛🥀 P.S. I'm so happy u referenced the yellow walking outfit from Miss Taylor Joy's Emma. U have done ur homework, indeed 👏
The detail about Lady Jessica's outfits that is utterly ground breaking are her shoes. They're platforms, but the shape of the platform is super unique, not matching any shoe silhouettes I've ever seen. It's so subtle, but it adds so much to letting the audience know that this is another time and place, an alien world. Keep an eye out for it next time you watch!
In terms of green dresses in film, one that sticks out to me is the green evening dress that is worn by Claudine Blakely’s character in Gosford Park. Her character is of a lower class and socio-economic status than the rest of the guests and only brings one dress that she wears three times, in comparison with the other ladies who have brought several dresses and other outfits. It is commented on by both the servants and Maggie Smith’s character.
I'm so glad Anita's dress was included in the list proper - I was afraid maybe it wouldn't be, when I saw it in the intro - and I loved learning the symbolism behind it! The first green dress that came to mind was Cyd Charisse's in the dream ballet in Singin' in the Rain. And now I have more movies to watch! Thank you!
I know there was a separate video made in regards to Scarlett O'Hara's dresses, but an honorable mention for either her picnic dress or the curtain dress would be great!
For green dresses, I know you will include the green velvet "drapery" dress Scarlett O'Hara wears in "Gone With The Wind", but I hope you will also give a nod to the lovely green & white dress she wears for the BBQ at Twelve Oaks. I also definitely think you should include Keira Knightly's green dress from "Atonement", Liv Tyler's pale green dress from "Lord of the Rings", Hedy Lamarr's gorgeous green costume in "Sampson & Delilah" & Emma Stone's green dress in "La La Land". Speaking of "La La Land" an honorable mention should be given to her yellow dress also.
Thanks for adding some good quality pics of the dresses! Most film fragments that you can use are of a low quality which, makes it hard to appreciate the true beauty and intricacy of some designs (although it motivates to go and watch some of the films to see it all in full HD 😅) Keep doing what you do, we love it!
I'm so so glad that you included Cher's iconic yellow plaid outfit in this video, even if it's not a dress. It's my favorite. 🟡💛 I think that it's Alicia's blonde hair that made them wanna wear the yellow plaid because as mentioned in your Clueless outfit analysis video, it makes her look like sunshine.
For green dresses, I constantly think about Disney's Cinderella live action costumes, and I think it would be fitting to mention Cate Blanchett's green number
LOVE! We can all tell how much time and effort you put into researching your videos. Great job. Also, thanks for turning down the volume on the background music. Doing so lets your voice and knowledge to be showcased.
I hope to see Scarlet O’Hara’s emerald green and the atonement green dresses in the next video in this series. Thank you for this video! While you specifically avoided using gold dresses in this video, I hope you make a video on gold dresses in the future 😊
It may not be as lavish as the other dresses on this list, but the short yellow dress Mia (Emma Stone) wears during “A Lovely Night” in La La Land deserved a spot! Definitely one of the most iconic contemporary costumes in recent years, it became such an instant enduring image from the film
I love the video! Specially the mention to Dangerous Liasions, Clueless and Mirror, Mirror ^^ I'm waiting for green! I'm very obsessed with the symbolism of green in films, shows and any media product. It is extremely complex and with meanings that are radical opposites. I have worked before onthe colour green for my degree and I'm waiting for your take on it ^^
For the video on the best green dresses, you HAVE to include Anne Baxter's green dress from The 10 Commandments, Liv Tyler's dress from Lord of the Rings, Katharine Blake's from Anne of a Thousand Days, and Rachel Weisz's from Oz the Great and Powerful.
Uma Thurman's yellow jumpsuit will never not be the most iconic yellow look in film history
That itself is based in another movie by Bruce Lee, the one that he sadly died during production, so is very meaningful for cinema history in a way
we have a video all about it! 😉 th-cam.com/video/KwNN8g76JrQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=G1jy04cR-_HAYEYj
it was too iconic that it has a separated video on its own
Bruce Lee’s is iconic
Check out the Battle Royale girl's outfit. Tarantino was inspired by her
If it's not too much work, it might be worthwhile to make a separate "best wedding" dress video so your white dresses video isn't completely overwhelmed with gorgeous white wedding dresses.
padme's yellow gown in attack of the clones is one of the most mesmerizing and memorable things my eyes have ever seen
oh my gosh if padme doesn’t have one single appearance in this series (her blue funeral gown would be my top pick) i am going to throw hands.

If you ever did 15 of the WORST yellow dresses, Emma Watson's Belle dress would definitely rank #1.
So disappointing
the fact that Belle’s live-action dress could even fit in the yellow category is a crime itself😭 the dress was always supposed to be gold it’s just an incredibly hard color to create in animation.
They should have taken a lesson or two from the 2014 movie La Belle et la Bete.
Such a disappointment as they could have used the theme parks or Broadway versions as a starting point or use more than one shade of yellow to make it less flat
That said with the Beauty and the Beast musical that toured Ireland last year did an amazing job with the ballgown, it was stunning on the actress

I am SO PSYCHED you included Lady Jessica's yellow ceremonial gown, that scene literally rewired my brain
the green dress kiera knightley wears in atonement is STUNNING
Dune's aesthetic is so sick!! Also this is my favorite of the colored dress videos so far, though yellow is far from a favorite color of mine. Thank you for sharing
For a green dress I always get reminded of the green velvet dress that Constance Hazard wears - it was the inspiration for my mom's wedding dress, because she wore a green velvet bodice (with a white skirt), and that original dress hasn't let me go since my mom told me, because ever since then I've loved green velvet dresses myself hahahah
I would absolutely LOVE to see a video on all the outfits in Dangerous Liaisons someday.
The Annie movie’s ,secretary’s clothing style changed my life. I saw this movie as a child many times and her whole wardrobe was burned into my brain.
I like the crimson peak costumes, and the yellow kimono Sayuri wore when she made her debut as a maiko.
You really need to talk about Romy and Michelle and the house bunny you've mentioned both a fair amount and I'm curious for your take on both movies.
i love how u released this on Thursday which in vedic astrology is the day of guru who controls color yellow.
Costume design in movies is so underrated, and I think it's so great we're finally taking into account the amount of time and effort poured into it.
Ariana definitely deserved to win the coveted Oscar, and her yellow dress as Anita was absolutely gorgeous!
Anne of the Thousand Days had a lovely yellow dress, which highlighted her youth, energy and innocence before the king’s intentions for her were known.
I love yellow! It’s my favorite colour 😍
Also the green dress in Atonement is everything!
The costumes Jodha Akbaar is one of my faves of film ~
This wasn't just an incredible breakdown of costume design, but it also exposed me to so many films I hadn't known about. Thank you!
Glenn Close's riding habit in Dangerous Liaisons...yellow + black combo made me think of things that sting.
Like yellow and black in nature signal danger. Yellow jackets (wasps), bees, etc.
Ooooh that's a really good point! A wasp stinging her prey.
It would have been lovely to see the yellow Sunshine dress from The Band Wagon. It was gorgeous
This just shows how film costumes regressed compared to 10 or 20 years ago
It really should’ve went along with the techs
feeling grateful to exist at the same time as moderngurlz
Honorable mention to the West Side Story dress, that pop of red is gorgeous, though I'm equally a fan of the black dress she wears later in the film.
love your commentary on crimson peak!! if you ever did a full costume analysis of that movie i'd love it
Btw can I just say how awesome it is to see Juhi Chawla making appearances in this video?
I’m so stoked you mentioned Dangerous Liaisons and my favorite dress from the movie! I always wondered if the pairing of the yellow and black was to compare her a bubble bee. At first seeming warm and fuzzy, but then proceeding to “sting” Cecile throughout the whole scene. Just a theory.
The yellow dress from La la Land that Mia wears while dancing in A Lovely Night has been seared in my brain ever since I first saw that movie. When I think yellow dress I instantly think La la land now
LOoove Jodhaa Akbar. My eyes were completely in heaven the whole time
ALSO you absolutely must do a series on GOLD dresses and include the gold outfit from Bajirao Mastani for the song Dewani Mastani.
Can't wait for the next episode! I love this series!
Thank you so much for including Jodha Akbar ❤
I’m obsessed with this color series
Mirror Mirror’s costumes make the movie one of my favorites.
My jaw dropped n heart stopped when I saw the yellow coronation gown from the Young Victoria! A similar design, esp for the bodice, would have been perfect for the live action B&B film. Alas, maybe in another universe that featured Emmy Rossum as Belle instead
🌹💛🥀
I love Emma’s green dress in La La Land as well. I would wear any of the wardrobe she had in that film.
I think that it's Alicia's blonde hair that made them wanna wear the yellow plaid because as mentioned in your Clueless outfit analysis video, it makes her look like sunshine.
Loved this video (as usual)! For the green dress the one that’s always in my mind is Cecilia’s green dress from the movie Atonement (2007)!
Specially the mention to Dangerous Liasions, Clueless and Mirror, Mirror ^^
I'm waiting for green! I'm very obsessed with the symbolism of green in films, shows and any media product. It is extremely complex and with meanings that are radical opposites. I have worked before onthe colour green for my degree and I'm waiting for your take on it ^^
Manikarnika is a film with fantastic costumes. The green Saree is great and i recommend for a mention ❤
