If you think this video is depressing you're looking at it the wrong way. When she says our lives are meaningless, it means like, each and everything you do doesn't have as big of an impact as you think. Spend less time worrying and take chances, live life, go - do - see.

Calling all those who love The School of Life! We should share these videos with others more often! I've noticed that the number of views of most S.O.L. videos are actually quite low compared to even moderately successful youtube channels. My guess is that most of us watching these videos are fairly thoughtful and reflective by habit and thus less inclined to forward a link along simply because we like it. But considering how incredibly helpful the content of this channel is, I think we should make a point of spreading the word (via links) as much as possible. If there's one channel that I would like to go viral, it would have to be this one...

***** Yes, I agree with Jack's idea - have thought about this too. It's important for the success of the channel and the great knowledge to which it guides. However, the cream always rises to the top hopefully!
I would just like to ask the School of Life if; you could bring back the lovely video you made about - Forgiveness.
I thought that video was very profound and wise also. One of the best in-fact.

Jack Wheeler I have just read a article in the Guardian about mindfulness, i have experienced this unfortunately so recommended school of life. As you may see from my earlier post to have a reply from soc was quite a game changer for me. I agree about being thoughtful and reflective maybe we are in the minority, well I know we are. Just imagine if these could be shown in schools, utopian dream I know but it is good to dream.

I am 17 years old and am surrounded by people on computers and phones all day every day and I find it very hard to resist acting the same way; whenever I find myself on my phone or computer for a long time, I hate what I am doing and what I am becoming. These videos help remind me of the importance of connecting with nature, animals, other people, and the world - thank you School of Life.

You likely have a very deep appreciation and nuanced understanding of things in life. Things that people are usually very flippant and actively ignorant about. It is a beautiful thing to cry to videos specifically like that. It means the video is touching so accurately and deeply upon things that you have no other reaction than to cry. Keep it real yo.

I've always been fond of the expression "from dust to dust". In the end, all things - and all of us - are made of stardust. The time will come when our sun will swallow up the Earth, and every human endeavour on this planet will have meant nothing.
So chill the hell out and just appreciate how unlikely it is in the grand scheme of things that we even exist, and have the mental capacity to be aware of our existence.
Every day I'm amazed all over again at how fortunate I am to have human consciousness, and to have been born in this unprecedented era of personal freedom. :)

    • @christian3309

Tal Sheynkman I like your positive and thoughtful attitude :) however, (and I know your beliefs vary from mine) I would encourage you to look to Gods word, the Bible, to see a little different of a perspective. This world will pass away, and we will too. But only the body, not our spirit, whether we like it or not. What we do here and now will directly project where we spend our life here after.
Again, I realize you don't have the same beliefs and possibly may be offended by me, or think I'm a fool, and so on. But I plead to you, if you are just willing to give it a chance, try reading some of Gods word. Or pray and ask God to reveal himself to you.
Your thoughts, statements, or questions are welcome back to me. Keep up the positive attitude like you already have :)

I don't think the message of this video is to support the depressive aspects of nihilism; it's more of a no-pressure sort of approach. Many people in the world are distrustful of the reality of their own failures, and have grown into a psychologically twitchy behavioral state of being in which they constantly stress and worry about whether or not their actions will result in personal catastrophe. We all give too much weight to our own fears and mistakes, and sometimes, the only way to reject the perceived gargantuan negativity is to realize that objectively, nothing we do actually matters. If that's true, then any mistake for failure that we'd otherwise stress about seems like it doesn't have any substantial effect on anything; thus, it appears tinier, less intimidating, and easier to accept as part of ourselves. This is a not a philosophy of reducing life's worth for a few moments of pseudo-humility; this is a philosophy of reducing the size of our terrifyingly expansive world of problems, concerns, and imperfections in order to bring them closer to ourselves, and bringing ourselves to realize that the positive and negative aspects of our being are really brotherly intertwined as we experience life.

I found her voice and the music very meditative in itself along with the message. ill health forced me to take the road talked about and as a result life has become greatly simplified and I have released those rushed frantic values I previously held. It does put me at odds with most of the people around me I find, and some habits have been very hard to break. I believe most of this 'rushing' and focusing on the superficial is just one big distraction to avoid facing our own mortality and time slipping away.

I love the message this video is giving. I have suffered from anxiety since childhood one reason being because of a statement from this, we exist to much in the minds of others. having been taught throughout my upbringing that I was never enough it helped me to have read a book that made me realize that everyone is more interested in what others think of them to be bothered with me.yes ppl judge & gossip but I'm judging myself more than anyone else , I am surrounded by ppl that take themselves way to serious. like the song says we are just dust in the wind not the be all,end all that we tend to feel we are. I like the phrase from this about how ultimately minuscule our existence is ( something like that) I just wish more ppl would realize it's possible to be hardworking, responsible adults with a sense of humor. I had a near death experience that left me with the realization that I'm only here for a very short time even if I live to be 100yrs old so I'm going to laugh & Love as much as I can before it's over. but most ppl don't wish to hear how unimportant they ultimately are and will always think the world is watching so don't let them see you sweat, smile, laugh, dance or have a unique personality

From the moment you are born you view this world through your eyes and your perception. Your experiences and your observations will be different to anyone else's but the fact remains they are yours and it is the only view you have of this world.

However like this one, no matter your age, is a peaceful reminder of what of are the most important things to us in life. If we're clever enough to grasp the easy concept of the message that comes with the video, about how our own minds are the root of our happiness and general feeling. Hopefully using it to our advantage :)

I usually relate to and agree with the articles associated with the School of Life but I really resent the sentiment of this one! There are so many bigger and deeper things going on when we pressure and worry ourselves 'needlessly' and to sweep all our troubles under a 'we are all irrelevant' blanket seems deeply depressing and not at all helpful... surely the root of depression is that question: does what we do have any meaning? Who is to say it does not?

    • @demianhaki7598
      @demianhaki7598 10 ปีที่แล้ว +18

(Sry, for the long post): I think the sentiment that we are cosmically insignificant and that there is no objective, higher meaning to our existence can make us free in the sense that there is no single, particular goal that we could either hit or miss. That is quite profound, I think, because, subconsciously, a lot of us tend to have some rough image of who we think we are, in the sense of a fixed "ego", which can lead to a kind of fate-like or destiny-oriented thinking. This doesn't have to reach religious dimensions. It can be a simple idea like "I have to get this particular degree and that particular job, because that is probably what suits me and will make me happy" or "I think that is the one person for me to be with for the rest of my life". Once we have linked our self-image and our personal conception of happiness/meaning to such a fixed goal, the anxiety to fail/waste our life can be immense. If, on the other hand, we accept the absence of an objective goal or meaning of life, we become less anxious, because there is no objective thing that we can fail at.
This, of course, does not mean that there is no meaning in life at all or that everything is arbitrary. There is nontheless meaning to be found: Subjective meaning. After all, we may realize that there are things that just "feel" valuable/important to us, no matter how objectively insignificant they are. Hanging out with good friends, a good meal, personal health, playing one's favourite sport, having sex, observing nature or art, helping others, doing a job you love for its own sake. All these things are objectively pointless when we consider it in the context of the eventual death of the universe, but our emotions cannot help but make us value certain things right then and there (Thanks, evolution!). And so, we can live our life trying to incorporate and accumulate things and experiences which, after careful self-reflection, we guess will feel meaningful to us. And a life full of individual meaningful experiences, or actions that enable meaningful experiences (e.g. working a pointless job to pay for a subjectively meaningful holiday) will eventually constitute a meaningful life overall.
Why will this life be less anxious? Because once we have realized what makes life meaningful to us, we will also realize that there is far more than just one opportunity to achieve this goal and, thus, a smaller chance of failure. If we seek companionship, there are millions of people in the world, so we don't have to be desperate if a particular relationship doesn't work out (even though we may and should be temporarily sad). If, in essence, we enjoy helping others, we may aim at a particular job to do so, but if it doesn't work out, there will be many more opportunities. If a person loves playing football, he may aim at becoming a world-class player, but if playing the game is what's important, then he now understands that there will always be a way to incorporate this in his daily life. What really matters becomes more general/abstract in its essence and thus we have a greater variety of options to make our life meaningful=>less anxiety to fail, waste our life or to be unhappy
Does life thereby become free of anxiety and pain? No. First of all, it takes time for this new perspective to sink in emotionally, because we often dramatize automatically and intellectual insight alone doesn't fix that immediately. Second, even though we may be less anxious in absence of objective goals, we are still left with anxieties about our subjective, more basic needs. Yes, we now have a greater chance to achieve, for instance, our general goal of having companionship, but we still have to accept temporary suffering when we are currently between relationships or currently lack social support in general. We will still care emotionally about anything that can affect our physical or emotional well-being on a basic level. So anxiety and suffering prevail, but we will now have, as Alain said, a more balanced view of life and what is really worth worrying about and just how much.
      PS:
      1) There is still, in my experience, a good chance to experience temporary(!) depression/sadness when one realizes that there are no objective goals, because it can make us realize that some things which previously seemed valuable to us are, in fact, not that meaningful to us and that we may have invested quite a bit of energy in the "wrong" thing. But that is usually just a period of reconfigurating our goals. Also, every previous life experience is valuable, even if it's just to realize that certain things aren't the right thing for us.
      2) An emotionally healthy human being will always have the capacity to perceive certain things as pleasant/meaningful. That is an unchangeable part of our emotional human nature (Thanks, evolution!). No rational insight about the nature of the universe can change that. If, however, one really, constantly(!) feels that nothing is pleasant anymore and life seems pointless, then this can be a noteworthy emotional deficit and a symptom of proper depression. In this case, one should not make the mistake to explain it away or attribute it solely to one's philosophical insights (even though this is something that a lot of depressed intellectuals and artists tend to do). One should get help.
...Sorry for rambling on, but I always find these videos and comments quite thought-provoking. Have a good one!

The British place an overemphasis on calmness. Yet it did help them in their quest to colonise and subordinate people from other countries.
Calmness can be grounded and peaceful, and it can also be very cold, and lacking in awareness.

I'm always extremely critical of de Botton's advice, mostly because of advice he's given about being critical of people's advice. But this is beautiful, and I'd guess that if everyone actively cultivated a more meditative lifestyle we could all enjoy our insignificance together. I'd still question whether we are totally insignificant considering we are significant in the lives of others (i.e. Martin Buber's I-Thou experience of transcendence) and to ignore that would be to miss a sincere pleasure

As somebody who came dangerously close to suicide several months ago, I have to say that I am finding the school of life incredibly helpful. So much so that I advised both my doctor and psychiatric nurse to subscribe. I was advised yesterday not to over think ! having an enquiring mind this is impossible, and whilst obviously certain areas of my mind are not functioning very well at present , finding this site is very important to me. This could along with anti depressants mark something of a turning point. Time will tell. It occurs to me that so many of us in life, are lonely not in a physical sense, but mentally and conversationally, which I suppose as most people are rushing through life, often just to survive and get by. This is why this site is so important to me, just knowing that there are like minded people out there helps.
Does anybody know who composed the music for this film ? I am increasingly interested in the effect certain music has on my state of mind, especially gregorian chants, very calming much more so than mindfulness. Sorry for the long post but it feels good to talk.

    • @valentine2911

Yes, our lives are meaningless"...when considered from a sufficient distance," but we don't live our lives looking at everything on Earth from Mars, we're stuck in the daily rut where we have bills to pay, traffic to sit in, and lovers to pacify.Taking the longer view can help put into perspective what is really important and worth fighting for.

Naturally, life is meaningless. We have no more purpouse than the dog on the street or a fly. We make our own meaning, more or less influenced by fake ideas given by society.

It's not scary to be meaningless or insignificant, it's far less stressful to know you are not responsible for everything. You are only responsible for making up and living with your mind. Your choices are yours to make freely in knowing that no matter the mistakes you've made, the hardships you've ensured, and the pain you suffer will not severely impact the true grand scheme of things. Take care of yourself and never punish yourself for not being prefect because the universe really doesn't care.
Why nihilism doesn't depress a nihilist but empowers them to find pleasure in this expanse of eternity.
