  • In this video I share a few days in my life as a Senior QA Engineer at a fintech startup after being out of work for 5+. months on maternity leave. I've been in Quality Assurance for over 10 years and currently work in a hybrid role of doing both manual testing and test automation at a small startup. It's a pretty honest vlog of how my days are, how I work and some of the challenges I face.

    Hi there! I’m currently a product manager and starting to get quite overwhelmed with all the client/end user interaction. I’ve been dabbling around to see what are other options I can transition into that are less client facing.
    I noticed that I particularly like creating defect tickets much more than enhancements so I started to think about whether I’d like being a QA engineer… maybe it’s a sign or I’m reaching bc I’m tired of talking to people so much LOL … I have no idea if this is more suitable because I never saw myself as a technical person people.
    If you have ANY insights I’d so appreciate it. If you happen to have any mentoring program please share.

    • @Kimbuucha
      @Kimbuucha  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Annie! PMs have one of the toughest roles on the team in my opinion. The technical part of QA just comes with the territory and you'll get used to it :) As far as insights, I'd be happy to go into more depth. I have also been helping mentor people wanting to get into the industry. If you want to shoot me an email, I can maybe help guide you better. I think my email is in the description but if its not, let me know and I'll leave it for ya :)

    Thank you for sharing your experience as a QA and being a mom. I'm getting through a QA bootcamp now and I'm a mom to an almost 10 month old boy. How far into your career did you get into automation? Once I finish my course, I'll be a manual QA, but it seems like adding on automation may make this a more sustainable career. What are your thoughts?

    • @Kimbuucha
      @Kimbuucha  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you for watching. I did mostly manual QA for 5 years and as I started working on backend services, I started learning automation. I think if you want to be as marketable and versatile as possible, definitely learn some automation, but not all at once. There are free online videos on Test Automation University you can check out and learn at your own pace. I highly recommend checking out free resources for automation and not paying money because there are SO many free resources and guides out there

    I'm looking into QA engineering as my career pivot move. I'd like to network and learn a little bit more about this particular field in tech.
    How heavily do you code in ÿour role, which languages do you use for testing and automation?

    • @Kimbuucha
      @Kimbuucha  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh awesome love to hear it. I love QA and don't see myself leaving for another discipline.
      Over the last 5 years I'd say I spent about 40-50% writing automation. I'd love for it to be more but based on team sizes and workload, it's hard to carve out more time. On previous teams I've written test automation in Ruby, Rspec, Javascript, Typescript, Cypress, Playwright and Mocha (not all at the same time, but for different applications and methods). Currently I'm writing in Typescript (for API automation), and Playwright (for UI automation). If I were going to suggest one, based on what I've seen in job listings and just generally where I see the industry heading, I'd suggest learning Typescript and Playwright because they can support both front end and backend test automation and are becoming more widely adopted. Also there are TONS of free TH-cam resources out there to help you get started learning. Hope that helps and feel free to shoot me any other questions :)

    Hi! I am considering entering into the QA program and I am wondering how does it work with mommy hood? Do you have a good balance on being present in both roles? I fear not being able to be as present as I could be with my child

    • @Kimbuucha
      @Kimbuucha  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi! Great question. I think most of this depends on the company and role more than the position. I think I have a good balance between being a new mom and my career because I prioritize finding companies that are remote, don't require late nights, are ok with my schedule being 8am - 4pm and don't require work on weekends. I also have my son in childcare full time and will be honest, it's almost impossible to do what I do with my son home because I'm in meetings a lot and need to concentrate. Especially at a senior level. However, I definitely try and make sure I find companies that understand that family comes first and understand what comes along with being a mom (sometimes, my son will be home and my hours will be chaotic, or I'll have to be away and work later in the evening). With all that being said, I think I have a good balance because if I want to take a day off and be with my son, I can. If I need to leave work early to pickup my son, I can. And I make sure to maximize the hours I get with him in the morning and evening before and after work and it works out well. Hope that helps 💖
