    That was some lovely bream. Darren’s bass was good too.
    I know we’ve both said it before, but we’ve got some epic fishing on our doorstep. From Hurst Castle down to West Bay, we haven’t got any need to travel further than that, and there’s a huge range of fish too 😊

    Hi Tom, another informative and entertaining video. I know that the gilthead was a bit of a bonus given how early in the season we are and I was wondering whether you would still use circle hooks when targetting them specifically later in the season. I have always been a great fan of circle hooks having read an in-depth paper on them written by Mike Ladle several years ago.
    As a scientist determined to ascertain how effective they were compared with traditional J hooks he carried out a number of experiments the most conclusive of which was when he joined forces with a commercial long line fisherman. They set lines out with half the hooks being circles and the other half being J hooks all with the same baits on several different occasions and each time the circles hooked 50% more fish than the Js. He also concluded that the circles were even more effective when snelled rather than tied in traditional fashion.
    I am now really demonstrating my geekiness by mentioning an interesting video I saw posted by a French angler who specialised in fishing for giltheads in the Mediterranean. He had the skull of a gilthead into which he repeatedly offered a hook that was snelled and one that was not. When retrieving the hooks from the gilthead’s mouth the snelled hook took purchase almost 80% of the time whereas the non snelled one was around 20%. For this experiment he used only a J hook in both cases. I assume that the success rate of the snelled hook was the resistance caused by the different pressure point and hook angle produced by snelling but then again I’m no physicist!
    Food for thought perhaps and I’d be interested in yours.
    David

      That is all fantastic mate, thank you for taking the time to write all that.
      Firstly, yes, I've used circles for gilts for a number of years now, even going up to a 4/0 with certain baits. My black bream fishing is lagging behind, though. I'm still using wormer patterns for those mostly. Perhaps I need to change.
      The snelling issue is fascinating. My tiny brain can't get around why snelling would work with a circle, whereas I fully understand why using the perfection loop works. I will have to try it. That's the only way of finding out for yourself.

    Colours look great on the fish guys! Are Bass generally thin at this time of year after winter? The ones I caught at this time last year were rather slender. 😅

    • @christchurchanglingcentre5428
      @christchurchanglingcentre5428  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      50/50 to be fair. Some you'll catch are spent after spawning, but some are nice, thick, chunky ones.

    Class vid as always. I've wanted to fish Studland for a while bit I hear I can be a pain am I right to think you can only fish it on the low and in the summer thers alot of weed

    • @christchurchanglingcentre5428
      @christchurchanglingcentre5428  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can fish it at any state of tide. It's a great blow off venue when we have strong westerly winds. Sadly, you're right, though, the weed can be a pain at times.
