    The moon surface is like a fractal...you see craters, then closer you see smaller craters, then even smaller craters...you really can’t tell how far away you are from the surface. No size reference

      Yeah! I loved the "pitch-over" - reminds me of the time Cernan and Schmitt yelled it out in excitement during 17. And that landing - so much harder than Apollo! Probably a good thing so they don't spray too much regolith on their targets.
      Super proud of them. I'm glad SOMEBODY has the balls to explore the moon....

I have no doubt that in the near future, we will see pictures and videos of their astronauts walking up to the descent module of Apollo XI on the Sea of Tranquility and looking it over curiously like we look at William Clark's signature (of Lewis and Clark) carved into the soft sandstone of Pomp's Tower of Montana as they think... • @cuscof2
      @cuscof2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It takes much less radio bandwidth to transmit black and white than to transmit color. Since that's pretty much the color of the moon anyway color images were probably felt to be unnecessary. Another possible reason is that the lander was using the camera image to navigate and land itself. Processing a black/grey/white image takes a *LOT* less processing power than dealing with a color one.

      Not really. They had a communication satellite up there to relay the signal. So even tho they where behind the moon, they where still in direct contact. While they probably used more advanced tech than in the past, It's not much different than the Surveyor 1 landing system.

    • @davidbowerman6433
      @davidbowerman6433 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As noted.... this type of landing was carried out numerous times using just altimeter radar and a slide rule.... And if you'd note with clear eyes, it hit pretty hard and bounced (play it at normal speed... this is 10x) and then the main engine didn't shut down like it was supposed to and ran on for 10 seconds. They are lucky it didn't bounce or tip more.

    • @jimmorrison2657
      @jimmorrison2657 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Bowerman was this landing fully automated? They obviously can't directly control it from earth because of the few seconds lag for radio signals. But I was wondering if they at least send various commands, via the relay satellite, just to give it the all clear to execute the various stages of descent .

    逐渐接近的月球的表面看起来总觉得像是某种自相似的分形图像,因为不管你距离月球多少距离,月球表面永远是坑坑洼洼的样子,大陨石坑看不到了小陨石坑又出现了。所以单凭肉眼真的很难判断距离月面的高度。
