  • Back out again in the Mongar 2 tent and I got way more snow than expected. This little tent from Naturehike in my opion is one of the best budget tents on the market right now.
    I've now tested this tent in snow, wind and rain and it has perfomed exceptionally well each time.
    I hope you enjoy this camp as much as I did.

    I've had the Mongar a few years now and what you used is about what I do, foil on the bottom, a picnic blanket, sleeping mat, a Trekology, (hate the footpump things), but recently also picked up a double pad, R3.2... Tiny USB pump, fits perfectly in the Mongar. Decent slug and if need be a camp blanket. Never had a problem. They are a better tent than given credit for. Well done that man.

    I have a Monger 2 and in my experience the closer to the ground the flysheet is the less draughts will find their way into the tent. Also its great to see a tent like this being used in the snow, well done for that.

      @@outdoorgaz5 In weather like that and cold wind the solid inner will make a big difference also more ground insulation, I just use one of those foil backed foam roll mats and one of the foam filled self inflating mats, not as much comfort but warmer for sure I might buy a decent thermarest for next winter.

      Clod peak 2 is great for winter. Very strong when put together properly. I've had it in super strong winds without guylines and it still handled the wind. I definitely don't recommend it, though, it was very scary 😂😂 I'd go for the cloud peak 2 fir winter. I'm buying a mongar 2 for spring summer. I've seen many reviews, and there seems to be a draft that will be better in Warner weather. I could honestly live in my cloud peak 2. Loads of space 👍👍👍

    Love the dark color of your Mongar 2, i wasn't that lucky, the only color available here was that almost white grey (a real annoyance to sleep on a full moon night) The only problem i had with mine was our winds (60-80 Kph are normal) so i did some mods to mine to cope with that during the colder months. Other than that, it could be a bit higher, but no real complains

    I like it thanks for the review. I want to go to the Sierras, and on occasion it can snow or icy dew. What's your bag rated to? I was thinking of using two 20F degree bags. I like that it has two doors. How does it compare with other nature hike 3 season tents? I was thinking of getting a propane adaptor for my isobutate mini stove, what do you think? both available in california.

      @@Frank020 Hi Frank, I was using a zero degree celsius bag. I've since upgraded my sleeping pad which is where you will lose most of your heat so I would invest in a decent pad. You can get a cab of extreme weather gas for your burner which should be fine. Hope you have a great adventure.

      @@outdoorgaz5 one of my tents is the Bobcat1 which is a fine budget tent but it has a mesh at the top of the inner door which doesn’t half let some cold in. It’d be better if the introduced another zip with another layer of material to enclose you in more. Great tent though.

  • @freeforester1717

    As babies, we were routinely wrapped up warmly, put in our prams and the pram would be put outside under shelter, in the understanding that a) we would benefit from the cold but fresh air, and b) we would come to no harm from the cold per se. The fact that the inner tent is mesh rather than solid is to my mind no disadvantage, and will help with condensation build up, or at least its removal to the inside of the fly sheet, where it is supposed to be. Love my Mongar, it’s a very underrated tent in my view. 🖐🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      @@michaelnicholson1817 3F UL Floating Cloud 4 season inner will get it, but tbh if you’re after a decent 4 season tent (with a skirt that comes further down and better wind resistance then for the £40 or so more you’re better off with the Asta Gear Crescent 2 in 4 season with 20D fly and 40D bathtub. OTOH, if you want a ‘warmer’ inner for 3 seasons for the Mongar then you can try the above, but tbh a 3FUL tyvek sleeping bag outer and silk liner inner for a decent sleeping bag plus a down balaclava would be better, as the ventilation advantages of the 3 season inner outweigh any perceived gains from inside the tent ‘draught reduction’, especially when condensation is a ‘thing’ like it often is here in the UK HTH 😊🖐🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    That inflatable pad would better serve you under the reflective and blanket layers as it reduces heat loss from conduction. Having it under the reflector and blanket would reduce convective loss through the pad making it the overall better stack. That mesh will help with reducing some condensation close in, but you will still get a lot on the fly. Cheers!

    • @shabingly
      @shabingly 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I came here to say this. It seems counter-intuitive (because everything you read says r-values are cumulative), but having the reflective insulation as close to the heat source definitely improves its effectiveness. I just used to whack mine as the layer I slept on tbh. The slidiness is fine when wearing base layers, too.
      And yeah, we in the UK do seem massively obsessed with solid inners and the assumption that 20d polyester taffeta will act like triple glazing 😂.
      It adds a couple of degrees at best, but the problem with that is that warmer air holds more moisture so as the other guy says, much more likely to get a wet inner.
