  • The Naturehike MONGAR 2 and STAR RIVER 2 are quite similar tents, but just how similar are they?Join Trev as he takes a closer look at these two lightweight 2 person tents in this 2 tent review!
    **This is not the Mongar vs the MSR HUBBA HUBBA as many thought may be on the cards although there is a link below in case you're interested in that tent)
    Trev loves a tent off... and after last weeks review of the Mongar 2 (supplied with thanks to Col from Outdoor Gear Essentials -
    outdoorgearess... ) someone asked him "What is the difference / similarities between the Naturehike Mongar 2 and Star River tents?"
    Trev took on the challenge and managed to source the Star River 2, and in this video he puts them both up side by side and runs through all the differences.
    FANCY ONE THESE TENTS? Then check out Colin's site for UK supplied stock of the Mongar 2 outdoorgearess... (plus Lanshan, Vik 1 and other tents at really competitive prices) or try some of the following links...

    After seeing this I think I'd just about (by a fraction) go for the Star River. The metal centre clip and only half mesh would seal the deal for me personally. Great comparison vid.

    i was surprised they were the same weight especially as the monger has so much more netting ….. maybe the alloy poles are a bit beefier or something 🤔 there is a 15D version of the Mongar that i believe is 1.8kg (i have one 😄) looking at them both the Star River with more inner material seems a true 3 season tent whereas the Mongar is pretty much a 1 season maybe 1 1/2 season tent …. 😄 great review as always nice one Trev …. atb Dave Mc

    I bought this tent because of the amazing reviews. I live in a place in Texas where the winds get up to 50-75mph which is quite bad and had a few tents collapse during a camp outs. I bought this one for this area and used it for another one the nature hike mongar 2 I have two of them. Beautiful tents! When it is 105 degrees outside those flap’s create a great cross breeze. Even my husband did great sleeping in the tent. 6 foot 3 inches. Still had plenty of room to have gear at the bottom. Wind was definitely not an issue. Especially with the huge stakes we had to nail into the rock hard ground.

    Maybe this helps people - the Star River 2 is a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 clone and the Mongar 2 is a MSR Hubba Hubba 2 clone. Both based off top selling tents from the big brands - both very good for the price!

    Fantastic video Trev, really well put together with the side by side comparisons at each stage, I think I would have the star river 2 if pushed.. but I do like all the Naturehike tents, was out in the cloud peak 2 for the first time in a while last weekend and really enjoyed it 👍

    I bought the Star River because of the better wind protection on the inside.
    I hate the doors though. You basically have to fully open them to get in and out whereas with the Mongar (or almost every other tent), you can get away with only half opening it.

    The Mongar is, as far as I can see, the same model as the 3F UL Floating Cloud 2, at least from the frame.
    This might mean that one could exchange the inner of the Mongar with the 4 season one for the Floating Cloud 2, seeing as Naturehike doesn't offer any other inners. Though the 3F inner has to be ordered from Ali over in China and doesn't come cheap...
    Maybe someone who has access to both tents in their circle of friends can test it out?^^

    If you want a 2 person tent you should pick the mongar as you can sleep in opposite directions. The star river is more for solo camping because it has better headspace but shoulder to shoulder sleeping will be very narrow. I guess its all personal preference... I have had some good nights in the lanshan, always found it a bit more fiddly to put up, plus I've only got the summer inner for it. If you take hiking poles any way it's a bit of weight saver, but if not there's not a lot in it. Also, I think Lanshans are pretty expensive these days too... not as cheap as when I bought one. If you do get one or the other though, it would be worth going through outdoors gear essentials. Competitive prices and UK stocked

    I ended up buying both and have decided to keep them both. I prefer the Star River for myself because of the additional fabric that raises the height of the bathtub floor. The mongar is considerably wider which is a better design for two people so I will give this tent to my two daughters to use. The other differences in clips, pockets and cross member are not significant in my opinion. I took the star river out this weekend in the rain and it worked very well and I was completely dry.

  • @RooDavis
    @RooDavis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

    Very helpful comparison thanks. A point missed. The Mongar has a much wider roof that puts an awning over the vestibule. While with the Star River when the fly door is open the rain is much more likely to drip into the tent. So the wider head room inside the Mongar, also means an awning over the door when getting in and out in the rain

    @stephentuck6607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Great video. I think the Star River 2 is slightly better. It seems like an improved version of the Mongar 2, especially the extra head room. The only thing that would make it better is if it had a longer 'cross bar' (same length as the Mongar, rather than shorter) so the inside doesn't come in so much on the sides, and thereby losing space. That wouldn't matter, if you are sleeping in it by yourself, but might be slightly inconvenient if sharing this tent with a second person.

    The Star River is pretty close to the Robens Boulder2 who is my favourite tent. I also own and love the NH CloudUp2, however...the problem I have with the NatureHike tents, is that they all have too much mesh and too little 'solid wall' inners. I live in Norway, the nights are getting colder, and if I were to go camping now, I would definitely bring my Robens Boulder2 and not my beloved NH CloudUp2,-for that reason alone. Too much mesh is a no-go for me exept in mid summer,-I've had enough cold nights thank you very much! Other than that, both these tents looks like they could do the job, I like the Star River the best, but...I still prefer my Robens😊

    I wish, Naturehike would make a lightweight one person tent like the Star River in dark green, brown or even better in camo without any refkectics on tent or ropes. Many people like me woukd appreciate this for stealth camping. I don't like the Cloud Peak. It has the entrance on the small side, not real comfy to get in and out, makes only a small vestibule and I miss the spreader-bar on top to have some head-space. In general, Nature Hike shoud get more in contact with their cusomers and listen to their demands.

    I've been a naturehike fan for awhile and currently own a cloud up for over 3years - I love it as its ultralight and perfect for 1 person moto camping. Built well! Moved back to NZ from Japan and the weathers colder and windier here.. looks like the star river would be warmer but being higher would catch the wind. Also noticed no fly connection to the inner except on sides.
    ..which would be better in cold/ windy weather? 😳

      Hi Bennet - out of these two I'd say that the star river would be the better of the two for colder windier nights - but you may even want to check out the cloud up 2 if you havent already. Tie off an additional guyline to the rear window and the thing is bomb proof. Also, I have never had an issue with the flysheet not being attached to the frame, it actually clips to the ground sheet or inner via the corners. Thanks for watching!
