    I discovered on my UV-5X radios, if I used the UV-5R test/diag Chirp driver for when they were first getting support for the UV-5X. I could directly write TX frequencies into the radio from within Chirp. I want to say there was a developer mode involved. Anyway, by going this route no text editing. Just load up the diag driver, connect to the radio, pull channels, adjust channels, push to radio. This works for at least channels between 18-40. Haven't loaded up any additional channels yet.

    Nice. Gives me motivation to look into doing something similar with my new UV-5R that is locked. Even if I can't unlock the 5R, your workaround means I can buy the 5G and then make it work for amateur radio.

    This MOD is also useful to those who live in areas with few or no GMRS Repeaters. By using the GMRS Repeater Inputs as (8) add'l simplex channels. The key to make it work is to disable TONEs on those frequencies. GMRS Repeaters use TONEs for access or to activate. Disabling TONEs ensures no accidental awakening of any nearby GMRS Repeater(s). In my town, a medium sized big city, there are only (2) GMRS Repeaters within 30+ miles. So this hack comes in really handy, with little to no repeater issues. Using the 467 channels as SIMPLEX channels also reduces chances of FRS Radio Users from harassing you. A freedom from the kiddies/kiddos/brats that over saturate FRS in some areas.

    They are facing pressure from the FCC and Amazon. I expect more locked down radios from now on. I don't know if the locks will be bypassable but I suspect more pressure will cause them to lock it down harder.

    • @HAMRADIODUDE
      @HAMRADIODUDE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree. Baofeng was definitely very concerned about this. They told me the was has a hardware limitation which wouldn't allow one to write to ch 31 and higher. It doesn't. They made excuses that I had developer software that was unauthorized to have.... I don't. Then they said the xml notepad was a developer software internal to baofeng... It's not. Finally, they admitted they are scared about the FCC. I assume Baofeng is trying to get away with the least amount of work possible but still wants their certification. This is just going to continue to be more difficult for them.

    Try changing the "off" to "(none)" in the duplex column. This worked to allow transmitting on the UV-9G. I would save a GMRS frequency from "VFO" to "MR" the radio but it would not transmit. Open Chirp and found the duplex setting was "off". Switched it to "(none)" and uploaded to raido and it would transmit.

    Thanks for posting this! So; I gave this a try. And it works-- sort of? If I key up a frequency (trying the national simplex freq to start), it definitely keys up another handheld I have nearby. But I can't hear anything. Attempting to call a local repeater also yields no results. So it seems to key up and transmit; but it transmits dead air and doesn't seem to pick up the mic. Is this some other layer they've added (just got mine a couple of days ago; they're the 5G and seem a bit newer because they have SMA-M antennas with no set screw), or am I doing something wrong?

    HRD, I have just ordered the RT systems ADMS-70D USB Programming Software from DX Engineering. Now, I am having an issue with my Digital mode. When I have it set on Digital, I receive an incoming transmission that switches me to FM. I have never had that happen before. I have had my Yaesu FT-70D radio for over a year now and I have Not gotten any updates for it or had it programmed for future transmitting on different frequencies. Question: When I get this programming cable/software, will it give me Updates as well that is needed like a computer needs updates every now and then as well? Thank you and thanks again for the past help. Haven't talked to you in almost a year now. I am somewhat Ignorant about these radios and only got licensed for mainly Emergency reasons but find it fun to talk to others around the world. I can do that when I'm on WIRES-X. Talked to a guy over in Japan last year quite by accident. Ok, take care and thanks again for any answer you give. KD9QAN and I'm Clear.

    • @HAMRADIODUDE
      @HAMRADIODUDE  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there. Sorry for the delay. It sounds like Automatic Mode Select (AMS) is enabled. From Yaesu: The Automatic Mode Select function detects the receive signal mode
      The transceiver automatically selects one of the four communication modes according to the signal received. This is extremely convenient when listening for communications, as you do not need to be aware of the other party’s communication mode. The transceiver can also be operated in a fixed communication mode. To Fix: (Page 16 of the user manual) - Press the AMS Key, Rotate the Dial knob to tune to the desired transmission mode as follows -TX Aut, TX FM, TX Digital . It's probably set to TX Aut (automatic) Best of luck!

    You can get a UV-5R for around $25, but the UV-5RG/UV-5RX is $35 - $50! You can hack a UV-5R easily and add the FRS/GRM Frequencies easier than what you did here.

    Did you get a chance to put this on the spectrum analyzer yet? I'm considering buying a couple of these to make use of my Baofeng accessories, but I don't want to buy/use them if they are TX with harmonics on GMRS frequencies like the standard/old Baofengs. At this point, the only Baofeng I use regularly is the GT-5R.
