Great video , which boeaves me with a few questions. First ,can you change the timeout fir the screen to stay on longer. Next is there a way to display yhe channel number instead if the frequency on the simplex channels? Thanks
I was unable to find the ground plane model, but you can replicate the experience by making a "Tiger Tail" - The length will vary depending on the band of the radio, about 19.5" on 2m, 11.5" for 220 and 6.5" for 440. Just make sure that you always use the same tiger tail when testing all the antennas to not skew your results.
I own pair of Baofeng UV-5G GMRS radios which I bought 3 years 2 months ago when I got my GMRS license. Using the stock short antenna I'm able to hit a repeater which is around 18 miles away from where I live. There is only two GMRS repeaters within 20 miles of where I live which is not that active. There is another GMRS repeater that's like 35 miles away that is part of the GMRS net that happens. But I can't hit that repeater least with the radio and antenna I currently have.
Maybe you got radios that had been returned so weren't really new. Also, do you really need the ground plane for testing HT antenna SWR? Would be interesting if the SWR got worse or better without a ground plane. Thanks for the review!
Splitting hairs as hams do... I believe that when you move the antenna from the body of the radio where "your hand" is the counter poise that you need to account for that with a ground plane. Is the included metal sheet good enough? dunno but its consistent across the testing and that is also an important thing. Going forward I'll be using a "Tiger Tail" for testing because I can't find the metal sheet model anymore.
@@temporarilyoffline Thanks for your quick reply! 😊 When I test SWR on an HT, I've always checked the reading while touching the base of the antenna, but I was just assuming that doing so would compensate for the meter stuck in between. But like you said, consistency is probably the most important part 👍
The radio came with 2 antennas, (neither were nagoyas) - the longer antenna was a better match. I will do a video on some GMRS antennas for HTs in the future and find the best one then.
I just bought the 2pac as my first radios. Will have to dig in and learn how they work and go from there. Received yesterday, put on the 15.5” antenna, turned them on and heard some folks doing a mic check, so that was cool!
I have both the UV-5G and the 5RM and they are identical except the 5G is GMRS locked and the 5RM out of the box is wide open and even includes 1.25m TX. You probably got a 5G and a 5RM in your combo box.
Another China FM dual band radio. Wake me up when they come up with something innovative for a change, like SSB, native texting, take and send photos and do it under $100. Then I'll buy several. Anyway thanks for the video.
I would say the quansheng uv-k5 with all the mods and hacks recently available is a good candidate. outside of the "send photos" part which ain't easy to achieve using narrowband fm data rate limitations, the other stuff is mostly there (well u'll have to try few different mods to see which one does what)
I think if you buy 1 by itself, it doesn't come with a programming cable like the two pack. If you buy the two pack you save $.50 + $6 or $8 (the cost of a programming cable sold separately). But I could be wrong, and it wouldn't be the first time.....
I enjoy your videos, but I am definitely not a fan of this radio. I've found from my experience that the time and money I spent searching for cheap Baofengs to meet my needs, that my Wouxun purchases makes so much more sense.
The receive was terrible on mine. Signals had to be super strong to be heard with the squelch open. Other radios put it to shame. Sent it back and bought a Wouxun KG-Q10h quad band and couldn't be happier. Does 4 bands on ham, gmrs, marine, murs, etc.
@@temporarilyoffline I probably got a defective unit. My expectations were low for a $30 radio but expected it to hear local repeaters that even my $15 uv5r could hear perfectly.
you cannot program UV5G Plus using chirp at this time, Baofeng does have a program to help program but it sucks. If I'm wrong please tell me but I tried.
I bought 2 on Amazon . One the screen was white the other one the speaker stop working after a week 😂😂 I got 1 mile only in City . I got the m -5r still working. The speakers inside of it are only glue together not weld so that's my guess why the speaker stop working it think the cables got disconnected from a drop
Sounds like an easy enough fix on the speaker! These weren't the best of radios, I don't even know why they exist, its not "enough" of an upgrade from other models to waste the R&D on... and as you saw, they didn't waste any R&D money making them 😂

nice UV-5G + model. them stock short antenna from Baofeng make a better coffee stir stick . video on you tube. I have a 2 pack of the UV-5G models. not the +. same as UV 5R but GMRS and the antenna on radio is SMA F , only UV 5 type that way so far. funny one locked and one not. may have to unlock threw CHIRP . may be dirty on 2 meters. they sold GMRS. my UV-5G (X) is dirty on 2 meters. so I just use them GMRS. I set wide band RX and TX for GMRS. I would put a single stick for antenna on them. better SWR . or the Nagoya 771 ones. if you find a high enough spot you hit that GMRS repeater. I got a 42 in Abbree antenna that may work. hard to walk and use them . 73's
@temporarilyoffline I also have the AR-5RM model. It does everything minus chirp and gmrs. Was showing my son yesterday how they can work together and separately. His mind was blown away

I'm not sure. I gave this radio away to a viewer a while back. Maybe somebody that has one can give some feedback.
Where can I get one of those ground planes for testing the HT's SWR?

Glad you enjoyed it!
“3 fingers salute” 😂
I swear I heard that somewhere before
The red text on dark background was definitely a bad decision. Glad they didn't go with that for the main display.
If only we had some knowledge of color theory as a species...we could have avoided red text on a blue background...
I have these . I was able to talk up to 2 miles with the small antennas . I have not tried them yet with my mobile radio yet.
