I'm really impressed with this video, we tend to think everyone knows all the computer shortcut, like "ctrl c" and "ctrl v" and shift click or ctrl click. I love how you explained every small detail, I'm positive the non- computer savvy people really appreciate it. Well done Josh, excellent video as always. 73, KW4LU

I know right. This has been the BEST video I've watched to teach us newbies how to program our radios. Hopefully he can show us how it would work on a Mac. There is also a device I seen that you can plug into your phone and program. Please review that too.

Thanks for giving us a video with CHIRP-Next, very informative. Especially since most of the CHIRP vids on TH-cam are ancient.

This may be the most helpful video in the history of TH-cam. Thank you Josh! Followed your instructions and (with zero chirp experience) programmed my new uv9d mate. Well done!

Great video...studying for my Tech but wanted to get hands-on listening on my radio.
Watched your video...took a lot of the anxiety of trying to program my radio.
Pulled in Noaa...FRS and GMRS (duplex off) and local repeaters.....then flashed a second radio with same profile.
    Super Easy!

Very well done video! Having been around radios and scanners my whole life first working for the fire department and then getting into law enforcement for a total of just shy of 30 years before retiring I know this isn't necessarily rocket science but for some people just getting into these areas that sure helps to see a very well done and easy to understand video like yours. I watched your video because you were dealing with Chirp Next. I have been getting away with the Legacy version of Chirp for several years now but I just bought the new Baofeng AR-5RM as seen on NotaRubicon. As luck would have it Chirp Next will not work on my old laptop, which is 32-bit. Of course Legacy is not updated so none of the newer radios show up in that version. I ordered a new PC which should get here in 2 days and then I will load Chirp Next and be ready to rock and roll. You helped me get an idea of some of the minor differences between the Legacy version and Next. Thanks for the info!

One thing I miss with the new version is the ability to import an already existing profile. I do like that I can now filter for both 2 meter and 70cm instead of having to query them separately. I also like the fact I can now query for only repeaters with FM mode and filter out the digital modes. Although I did notice that it may still omit repeaters that you can use analog FM while digital modes are also being used. My club's 70cm repeater is capable of Fusion and WIRES, but you can still transmit using analog FM while someone is transmitting digital.

I like the new version of Chirp. I have RT systems on some of my units but Chirp works well. I sometime become the guy that programs the Newbie's HT. I usually set it up so they have all the same repeaters in the same location on the unit as everyone else. Makes it easier to explain what channel to change to. I also like to use it to program by Kenwood TH-F6A. the program Kewnood provides is really out of date for doing that. Always enjoy your videos. 73

I just got my technician license this week and I was watching your older video for everything Baofeng, and was discouraged when chirp didn't act the way you showed. This one cleared up my frustration due to ignorance of the new program.

Thank you for this video. One issue I encountered that may not have been emphasized enough is that if you do the programming and your radio does not accept programming - check the programming cable plug into the side of the radio and make sure it is plugged in securely as it can be difficult to determine if it is connected properly and this will prevent the radio from accepting programming.

Great video, I upgraded my previous Chirp to the Next version, works great, I have 3 UV-5R's , I updated each one's settings and memories no problems. I edited the "Display Message" to a unique name so the radio's can be identified when turned on. as well as when downloading the radio's profiles.
    Have a great day

Great Video. I just updated to Chirp next. I am now working on updating my programing adding/updating the local repeaters ect.
Here is a suggestion for a video although it may take a new tool. Plotting the local repeaters on a map or pulling your programmed repeaters into a mapping tool so that you can have a paper map of the repeaters in your radio. Uses would be Cells down or no service, planning a road trip. There are times it would be good to see visually. Since the repeater book filter do appear to be by distance it would be good to have a way to see. I found that if I look each repeater up on the repeater book app the grid square is there the data is available I just do not see a way to export it and then plot it.
    I do love your content.
    Thank you

Hey, just getting started in HAM at 69. This video was great and I programmed my two type Boafengs (UV-5R & BF-F8HP) without problems. But, using the new NEXT CHIRP I found that it did not allow me to add my favorite FM Station as you did. That line only has a checkmark box. I'm guessing I need to manually add via keypad? Thanks again for all your videos!

Nice! I haven't really done anything with ham radio since moving to Las Vegas a couple of years ago. I just ordered a UV-5r and programming cable so I can get back into it. I have rigs on my dest but I still need to get antenna up and all that jazz. A 20 dollar HT will get me on the air until the shack and antenna farm is up and running. I was planning on using Chirp. I am going to give this new version a try.
    Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video, very concise and helpful. BTW I keep getting an error message whenever I try to insert a frequency under the settings panel. Program lists 1 through 20 FM channels, in the second column, I try to input a local FM broadcast station, although the pgm will not allow the input, stating the value must be between 0 and 5 characters. Might you have any suggestions?

I don't want to make fun of Baofeng users, because I just got two for free (almost) from Amazon. I got two identical UV-5R8Ws. So I won't make fun of you guys anymore. But now please don't make fun of me for still having an Advanced class license (thank you) so now we're even. Didn't even need the user manual to figure out how to use it except for some of the obscure and non-self-explanatory menu settings. They are okay for the money, good to have for an emergency and it's easy to add new channels, simplex or repeater just on the keyboard. Very simple operating procedues compared to real Ham HTs.

I liked your video but had a question. When you import from Repeaterbook the entries are in random order in terms of frequency. Is there a way to sort by frequency so I can have them in order like 145.124,145.225, 146,125.... as opposed to jumping all over the band?

Fantastic video and thank you for putting it out there. One issue with mine is the channel name display on display mode 2. Its set in chirp and the radio as well on menu 22. Not a big deal overall. Its a $25 radio. I appreciate the content you make and all you do for the radio community.
edit: found that switching around the frequency to display on B and the name on A worked for me.

I've tried many things (switching Name on A, freq on B ... or freq on A, Name on B) but I'm convinced my A is broken. Too bad. I even reset the radio and tried again with the same result. Time for another Boafeng, I guess.

Some great info here on the new Chirp. It now supports my Quansheng, which also comes with the Silicon Labs cable, this is great news, as I had lost interest in the Qaunsheng radio.
I did notice that when I go to File menu to open "Stock configs directory it is empty, and contains no data. I was interested to note how the csv files are formatted. In reality, it appears that the "stock config" folder is stored in a different place. C:\Program files(X86)\Chirp\Chirp
I was curious as to what " Enable Automatic edits" is ticked by default, and what it's function is?
    Keep up the good work..

I have WIN 11 computers and the a port designation does not appear for a the Baofeng UV-5R. There is a COM1 and PL2393TA Does not support Windows 11 "Port" which is an option when the BF is plugged in. I recall I had this problem last year in using CHIRP (legacy). I literally had to install the CHIRP on a WIN 10 PC that I had in storage to use CHIRP. Incompatibility with Windows 11 does not seem like a "Next" to me.

Tried the "new" CHRIP, I can read from the radio but I can't down load. I suspect the the radio is the problem (Anytone 5888UV III)

Reading from the radio is downloading. Just copy the records over and upload to radio. That is all.

I just plugged in my uv5r to chirp and query my city, then noticed my radio powered itself off and now won’t turn on. Seems like it just died? Any idea what happened?

    Boa noite!
O CHIRP não abre o menu settings no meu UV-5R.
    Pode me ajudar por favor?
    Ele fica todo em branco.

I keep trying to download Chirp Next but Norton blocks it saying it's malicious software. Anybody else? What to do??

Great stuff! Thanks. I have an issue in CHIRP that I can't resolve and perhaps you or others may be able to help. I'm unable to delete a memory channel 11(RED) in Chirp. Thought I could attach a screenshot here but unable.

Just do a factory reset on the radio and reload your programming.
