Disability Etiquette Gone Wrong: Service Dogs

  • Service dogs work hard and can do a lot of things from opening doors to getting something off a shelf.
But as skilled as they are, they can't do two things at once!
That's why it's important to let service dogs concentrate on their tasks and to not distract them while they're working by petting them, calling for them, etc.
In this video, you'll see a case of service dog etiquette gone wrong, and learn how to do it right!
MossRehab's "It's Just Respect" in-person training & video series aims to educate people about the dos and don'ts of disability etiquette-whether it be in the workplace, a retail business or out in the community.
It's about providing a more comfortable experience for people with disabilities. But it is also makes good business sense for anyone who deals with customers with disabilities.

Thank you! If everyone looked at the dog and saw a wheelchair they would get the message, the worst is when the kids are allowed to run over to you and attack you and the dog, especially in the middle of an attack. Good video! Blessings.

Thank you for this. There are people that consider their service animals as "medical equipment" and should be "treated as such." None if those phrases was used or any negative speech. These SA's are excellently trained and are perfect for their patients, not for the general public to access for entertainment.

Excellent! I puppy raise for a mobility dog provider and when we are out and about we spread the word - with explanations when we are out.
I quickly got over feeling 'rude' when I had to block to maintain the distraction from my SDIT.
I love it when my friends, classmates and colleagues who have spent time with my charges respect the pup and often I notice they are sharing the message. I consider that nearly as big a WIN as one of my pups starting their career partnership.

If its working for more than one person then it is a therapy dog, not a service dog. A service dog is to help one individual person. :)

Carolyn Bender service dogs and therapy dogs are two completely different things. Just if a dog is performing tasks for multiple people does not make it a therapy dog. A therapy dog is only trained to provide comfort while a service dog is trained to perform tasks. Therapy dogs are basically emotional support animals for multiple people while service dogs are medical equipment. :)

If you have compliments for the dog, tell the handler. That way the dog can focus on what he or she is supposed to do -- the job. I love dogs, but I know when I see that vest, I have to talk to the human first. Great video and LOVE Seamus.

A recent problem I had was with a child who had an intellectual difference who ran up to hug and pet my dog. Parents need to have a firm grasp of their child around any dog, because they could end up being bitten by dogs that are not so well behaved as mine is.

Wish you do one for the obnoxious handlers that are distracting other service dogs to determine whether they are fake or not. Training take time and dogs had rough days just like humans. Never fails that someone trys to determine what a service dogs duty are, each person needs are different in training.

I once saw this great video a service dog owner took in secret. The camera is looking at the floor and you can hear a mom and child talking.
    Kid: 'Mommy, it's a puppy!'
Mom: 'Yes, it's working right now, so leave it alone.'
    Kid: 'Can I pet it?'
Mom: 'No honey, it's working right now.'
    Kid 'It's so fluffy!'
That's what we tell my niece every time we see a service dog in public and what every kid should learn. I couldn't find the video because there are so many videos of people harassing service dogs and their owners. It's unfortunate. There should be more videos of people respecting service animals to teach people how to act.

Anya A. You have to remove links until the collar is tight enough to not slide or rotate on the dog, it might cause scrapes if it is loose enough to move around.

for one even if the prong is low you should never yank the prong hard enough to break its trachea, if that ever happens youre obviously abusing the tool and dont know how to use it properly, its used for communication and small pops for correction you can pop it with your pinky. please dont yank your dog with a prong on no matter the position. having it higher up on the neck behind the ears just make the tool more efficient

Kazia Samson your best bet is to find a prospect puppy with the right temperament...wither from a shelter or breeder. Then you can go through places like Petco and do basic training all the way through the canine good citizen test. after that you guys can self train tasks or find a trainer to help.

train train train everyday with a good tempered puppy, make sure parents are healthy and stick to training for 2 years! dog must know at least one task to mitigate your disability and you have to make time when their young for confidence building exercise, desensitization, as well as introducing people and dogs in a friendly environment and working environment. its alot of work unless you wanna pay thousands of dollars for a company trained SD
