My Grandmother was a model for Hamburger’s. This was about 1915. Grandpa had a jewelry store at 335 S Spring St which he opened in 1890. In 1900 he lived at 1156 S Maple in a house which is long gone. I have a picture of him and his 1st wife standing in front of it.
I am glad you explained how they straightened Spring Street. I have seen many early photos taken from this corner and seeing the curve in the street bugged and confused me.
Los Angeles had city street cars ( Los Angeles Railroad which in 1944 became Los Angeles Transit Line until 1963 ) and also interurbans which were operated by the Pacific Electric ( the Red cars ). I believe that tower was manned and served as a sort of traffic signal for the rail cars which converged at that intersection.
At around 6.10 you ask about the man in the box. I have two guesses. Either an early model siren hidden in there for all of your siren fans, or a time lord tardis on a pole.
