If it was made a public statement when you were younger then perhaps it wouldnt be 2023 and we still have people saying things like "autism is caused by vaccines" There is a reason for this becoming more public and its not a bad one. Are some disingenuous, going to far, not properly spreading awareness? sure of course there is, but it doesn't change its outcome. People making it more public has lead to far more people getting properly diagnosed than ever before, its brought it out into the light and more people are learning about it. even with the bad videos people still start talking about it rather than ignoring or hiding it.

I have actual psychiatric-diagnosed OCD. I remember being in middle and high school when OCD was popularized (around the 2010 "rawr xd random" era). Being quirky was the big thing, so people referred to their desire to be organized and orderly as "my OCD acting up." So I imagine the frustration people who actually struggle with autism feel when their disorder is used as a trend.

The thing that I hate the most about people who fake having things like autism is that, not only do they do it just for attention, validation, and views, but they don’t show the harsh side of having it at all.
Every person who fakes having it always portrays it as something that just makes you more happy and ecstatic and something that’s just fun to have.
Well, as an autistic person myself, I can safely say that having autism is not all sunshine and rainbows.
From a lack of an ability to handle/cope with certain things to a lack of an ability to focus, there are a lot of developmental and social issues that come with autism.
People with autism struggle with a lot and I hate that these fakers act like those struggles just don’t exist at all.

    • @Vincisomething
      @Vincisomething ปีที่แล้ว

People who fake autism also have to have a comorbid illness like, depression, sleep disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, or some other neurological or psychiatric disorder that makes your life difficult. You can't just claim to be autistic and think being quirky and stimming is all there is lol. Especially if you've never been diagnosed until adulthood.
No one wants autism or ADHD, the difference is those of us who have it really have no other choice but to own and accept it.

Personally i dont get it because as a diagnosed autistic myself (I hate that i feel the need to say that) i know a lot of autistic people. Not one of these uses autism for clout. It impacts your life massively and i feel that the people who are self diagnosing are taking away from the struggle that undiagnosed people have/had, especially children. Autism can severley affect learning and thats not even considering people who are more low functioning.

True. I realized I had borderline personality disorder a few months before I was officially diagnosed. To be fair, professionals throughout my adult life suggested I may be dealing with BPD, but I didn't want that to be true due to the stigma. I have every single trait, and the classic borderline "origin story". It was obvious to everyone, including my own mother, before I self diagnosed. And I immediately got a therapist afterwards who picked up on it quickly... what I didn't do was create an internet persona to brag about my self diagnosis to feel special and get attention. I instead took the first steps to getting the help I needed.

I have know been put on anxiety medication and I have an autism diagnosis. My psychiatrist also thinks I have adhd but that’s not an official diagnosis as of yet! I’m so glad I don’t have tik tok, I’m not a fan of people faking autism. I actually got diagnosed as a child (which was rare for a girl back in the 90’s) growing up was hard. The teasing, the missed information, not getting invited to events and being expected to do so many things at once, I had several breakdowns in my 20’s and looking back I didn’t fully grasp that I would still affect me as an adult. Communication can still be a challenge but life has gotten better. Just wish I knew sooner-I didn’t find out until I was an adult that I was autistic.

Like people on there are literally just looking for something to be mentally ill about. It's honestly disgusting and cringe to me. Something that a lot of people miss is that a mental disorder is diagnosed not by the presence of symptoms but by the frequency and severity of symptoms. Like, yes everyone is forgetful sometimes, but that doesn't mean everyone has adhd. But, if someone's forgetfulness actively gets in the way of living a happy and normal life, that could be a sign that that person has adhd.

I lived my life having a hard time processing things, like I can hear people say things to me but my brain doesn't process it well so I usually ask people to repeat themselves. I ended up going to special classes in middle school and highschool due to this.
Overall I didn't take it seriously because I pretty much lived with it.
So recently, I was talking to a co-worker about it because I kept making repeats herself. She mentioned I had "something delay disorder" (I can't remember the name)
So I looked it up, "huh! That actually sounds like what I have". So I mentioned it to friends and family....
Their reactions made me feel a type of way. I had friends respond I got that too.
Since I didn't care about that much after the day I mentioned it I stopped talking about it because I was just genuinely happy It's a word for it.

I have sympathy for you because I self-diagnosed myself with a couple things years ago and spent a lot of time thinking about it for awhile. I have a psych degree, and it’s very common among people studying these things for the first time to identify with several things in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (published by the American Psychiatric Association-referred to as the bible of mental illness). But this trend is very problematic.
One thing to ask yourself with is: Why do you want a diagnosis? Is it for identity purposes, to access health or social services via a diagnosis that health insurance will cover for, or some other reason?
If you are actually experiencing mental illness, then you should of course seek a diagnosis so you can access health and/or social services. But, if it’s not for a productive reason, maybe it’s better to seek self-acceptance rather than seek an external diagnostic label to stabilize your identity. Such external solutions tend to be temporary fixes to long-term issues.

@@soberserotonin1850 yes I bounced back and forth with a lot of diagnosis while researching. I think I want a confirmation by professionals to ease my concerns. It has also opened doors for me with support work, since I find myself being delayed in areas compared to my peers. coming from an autistic, being autistic can be hard enough. it already outcasts us from being treated like everyone else. but when people fake being autistic for attention, it affects our community a lot more and makes people treat us like we're all faking it. it really invalidates our struggles and makes us look like a laughing stock, especially for autistics that don't "look" like they have very high needs. it all makes the stigma around autism much worse.

As somebody with diagnosed autism and ADHD that was very late diagnosed and miss treated their whole life because of being “weird” or “ not fitting social norms” people that want to fake autism, or ADHD, or any kind of disability, will truly never understand the cultural aspects of our community, and I will say there are things that make autism and adhd “fun” such as the community we have by sharing our own experiences with others, but that’s literally the whole point. OUR OWN experiences which fakers do not have. People always think that disabilities will give them some kind of positive attention, but in fact, it’s actually kind of humiliating when people treat you like you’re a dog and think that you can’t understand simple words just because you have autism. There’s a lot of terrible stereotypes about all disabilities especially neurological.

I had a classmate in college who had Asperger’s syndrome, I was told that it was mild but you can pretty much guess by his mannerisms. Interestingly though, he was the first one who I talked to and became somewhat friends with in their batch (I was from a different batch, but I needed to take some of their classes after taking a year break). He was from a different department but transferred to us because of bullying, I can see how it was hard for him to get along with people and open up. At some point he was able to open up to us since we were a department with like only 15-20 people in it and we were close-knit and tried to get along with each other as much as possible. After a few years with him, we saw how he became more talkative to us and can actually look at us from time to time, it made us happy whenever he was the first one to say hi to us.
Disabilities are not trophies to collect, they are challenges that people have to live with. The achievement is not being diagnosed with disabilities, but by being able to live and do the things they want while having one.

As someone who stumbled across a tiktok or several about ADHD symptoms and thought “hmmm I relate to that A LOT”, then went and got my actual diagnosis.. if people ask me how I figured out I have it, I do not ever tell the truth lol. I always assumed it was only other disabilities affecting my concentration and that I just got bored easily, perhaps I was selfish in not enjoying doing things that weren’t fun. I hate appearing to be a self diagnosis person, I ain’t about that. I just say my therapist happened to notice it. >.<
In regards to the first girl, they didn’t actually recognise that girls could have autism and ADHD for a very long time. I think it wasn’t until the 80s (please lmk if I’m wrong) that they finally started recognising autism in girls more. People were “used to little boys being naughty” so it was more acceptable for them to act out and it was noticed a lot more. You can also have the hyperactive part in your head, which is what I have, my brain just doesn’t stop. But I don’t think I can have as much hyperactivity in a physical sense due to other disabilities giving chronic pain and fatigue. Or perhaps I just don’t get that type of hyperactivity. Disabilities are whack.

First when you mentioned the fly thing, i thought it was going to be about something my dad told me when i was a kid that is pretty wild. If you drown a fly and then take it out let it dry and put a little salt on it, it comes back to life. LOL

As an fyi, diagnosis for women with autism is usually difficult or overlooked due the dsm5 being based on MALE autistics. Women with autism behave differently and often mask heavily. Also, in the US, getting a diagnosis as an adult is difficult. Not only to find a place but if you do, expensive. I’m not saying these tiktoks are right and not absolutely cringe and misleading, but I feel a lot of hate is being thrown at women who recently discover their diagnosis with wanting to get attention.

ive struggled with sensory issues and social queues my entire life, the people who fake autism make me really angry because it invalidates those struggles.

Been diagnosed with ADHD since I was 7, Im 32 now, I see people always try to diagnose themselves with it and want to have it as if it is cool. I wish I was just normal. I have the worst time management, I often put whatever Im hyper focused on over important things I need to keep on top of and it puts a strain on my relationships, among many other things. I just don't understand why people would want this stuff.

The girl at 3:30 is speaking truths though! Only recently, more professionals are recognising female autistic traits. I was misdiagnosed again and again in my childhood, struggling through school and college, all the way until my mid 20s. I saw professor Simon Baron Cohen who diagnosed me with autism after a long interview. Me and my mum had tears because it was such a relief to finally be understood after years of struggling through life being miserable, misunderstood and bullied.

Yeah I was kinda disappointed that he took that tiktok to mock her... the things she was talking about are really serious and real issues regarding the diagnosis process for females with asd... especially adults

@@emiljankus3516 exactly! I was disappointed too. I guess he doesn’t get that these hardships exist on the female side of the spectrum 🙄

So when I was younger, I read the book "A Rebel In Aushwitz" which was about a Polish Undercover Officer named Witold Pileki. He was sent to Aushwitz on a mission. He eacaped but died to a gunshot when he was caught again. His records of the what happened were almost lost in history. Really recommended but it VERY dark, not the best for younger readers.

with the tiktok rap about autism, she is right about autism being one of the biggest missed diagnosis for women in mental health, it is usually brushed off as BPD, Depression, or Bipolar

I'm someone who actually has autism and had ADHD and never once did I brag about it. I was relieved to learn that there was a reason behind my behavior and other stuff, but I would never be happy about having it. It's just sad how many people who do this trend and are so happy about it

There are two girls who work with me and have both self diagnosed themselves with Autism. I do not have Autism but I have been diagnosed with ADHD, depression and anxiety (which is essentially just ADHD as it has branched from both of them, dunno it’s super weird). I cannot express how frustrating it can be to hear people “self diagnose” themselves with a mental disability.

I've been diagnosed with ADHD since i was 6, i remember when i was little i was not liked because i acted rather abnormal compared to other kids, and it baffles me to see that kid's nowadays will 'pretend' to have ADHD and think it's a gift and that it just makes you really unique and makes you 'creative'. It's just mind boggling how back when I was a kid no one EVER would have wanted to have a disability. News Flash, ADHD isn't fun, and it actively makes my life harder. Don't emulate disabilities.
