Always love the precision and economy of this composition - they don't need to riff or improvise because each and every note has its place and none are superfluous. Like so many of theirs, actually. Hugely unappreciated band.
When I was 17 I saw this band for the first time. August 1988. I got a tshirt that had “Too dangerous to keep..too feeble to let go” printed on it. I already had “Starfish” and two others , loved the music, and “Reptile” premiered on MTV a month later. Good times. Almost 50 now.
The beauty of art is that once you discover an artist (or in this case, a band) you make it your own with the freshness of when they had just released their work. For me this is the case with The Church. I've only discovered them 2 weeks ago and I just listened to Starfish an hour ago. A delightful album.
been into them since under milky way etc... saw em & met them in my area then! still enjoy their music, even Marty's first solo album with cascade & idiots on it! miss those times from 🇺🇸 cheers ! ❤😊
@@martincito88 Your question is vague. Are you being sarcastic, and implying they're not popular or relevant in 2020, or are you being sincere, asking where they are (what they are doing, etc.)??
Yeah it sends shivers up and down my spine... I feel the same way with Echo & The Bunnymen's 'Show Of Strength' especially true when they play it LIVE!!!!!
This is amazing energy. Truly beautiful precision like a hummingbird getting nectar from a trumpet flower... Drummer is off the charts. Grew up in the late 70s and early 80s listening to these guys on 92.7 WLIR on Long Island, New York... GREAT STUFF. No cell phones. No internet. I came from another world. A simpler world. A happier world.
YES! WLIR, then WDRE! Used to listen to them in Northern New Jersey all the time! They were a little weak in Jersey, since they were in Long Island and were low powered. So I used my Ham Radio antenna aimed east to pick them up! That station was iconic! Did you know they are online now?!
The drumming is just awesome on this live vesion. I can feel the drumming from just listening. I got chills from just listening to a recording, can not imagine what the audience felt. And the guitars! One of the best songs inspired by the Thin White Duke!
Amazing!!! There will never be another band like this! Pure Magic! You can never duplicate this with stand in’s - Kilbey! You four were the Sum of the parts! Sorry, but the jokes on you souvenirs .......good now forever lost!
Saw them in Ithaca, NY April of ‘19, awesome meet and greet before the show! Took me back to ‘88 recovering in St. Vincent’s hospital in Sydney after a brutal beating I got in Kings cross.
Will we be able have a concert like this one again? Yes we will! The human spirit will not be contained or broken! Let me hear it from you brothers and sisters!
I believe it was Mike Mills who said "There are 2 rules to performing: never wear shorts on stage, and never play a seated venue." This proves the latter.

What a great song! This 55 yr old dude just got turned onto it! Wish I had heard it long ago....probably did but it just didn't connect with me until now. And no...I just didn't emerge from under a rock! :)
nachosandchez i'm the same way. I'm 46 and back then, I don't think this music spoke to me like it does now. I'm sure I've heard it but for whatever reason it didn't register back then
nachosandchez : 😁 50 year old female here and heard them at 18 and fell in love with them then till now! Brings back so many great memories!! Glad you finally found them! Cheers
I discovered them in my youth through Donnie Darko. They've been an ever present go to thing in my life. Whether I'm up or down, they just remind me how fantastic some things can be.
The guitar tone on both guitars is so on point.
Agreed. Flawless
Yes.
Literally the best I have ever heard
@ML Jones fair point my man. Lol
Minimal gain allows for far more tone scope.
ABSOLUTE LEGENDS. This is music.
love the guitar work on this live version so many years later
To say this is MESMERIZING is an understatement.

Reminds me of when I was in High School in 1990. My friend and I would scream the lyrics while driving around Colorado.

Heard this on XM this morning and immediately cranked it up and my day was good.
Brilliant. I bumped into Steve totally at random at my local shops. He was happy to talk about all things musical. Nice bloke.
I saw these guys 3 times. First time was opening for U2, and the 2nd and 3rd time at a small club in San Juan Capistrano, Ca in the early 90's.
she was the apple of my eyes!
...but that was long ago....
Sublime y máximo, The Church elevándome más allá del cielo con este sólo de guitarra.
