On their 30th Anniversary the church continue to redefine what it is to be a band, evolving without compromise into one of the world's most acknowledged rock groups. Guiding the band though the '80s and '90s with a combination of chemistry, talent and a desire for excellence, their unique and distinctive guitar sounds and thought-provoking lyrics have succeeded in inspiring both the audience and the critics' imagination the world over. In recent years the band have continued on their creative trajectory and with their induction into the 2010 ARIA Hall Of Fame, they have been able to reflect on their huge body of work as they continue to be prolific and pursue their artistic aspirations both live and in the studio.
From the debut album Of Skins and Heart (including their first hit The Unguarded Moment) to the artistically and commercially successful Starfish, charting high in both Australia and the USA, (featuring the ubiquitous Under The Milky Way and guitar driven Reptile), through to 2009′s lush, organic masterpiece Untitled #23, lead vocalist and bassist Steve Kilbey, guitarists Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper and drummer Tim Powles (now an active member of the band for 17 years), have continued as the church through three whole decades to pleasure their fans with a unerring sense of space, melody, beat driven prose and sonic charm.
Rolling Stone Australia gave their last album Untitled #23 an unprecedented 5 star review -- "a stunningly ambitious album of shimmering rock". In the USA Rolling Stone commented, "the church have truly reaffirmed themselves as one of the world's leading melodic art-rock bands, regarded by critics as "a powerful, progressive force in rock music", playing "the most ethereal sounds this side of paradise" and have remained one of the world's most innovative and enigmatic groups justifying praises from the press including "Best guitar band on Earth", "Sonic perfection", "Sounds that caress the senses". "A masterpiece of stealth".

I rediscovered this tune a year or so ago. Its one of those songs you hear on the radio and if you didn't catch the band name, you were just screwed.
The airwaves were dominated by record companies back then. Certain songs got played over and over, to boost sales.
Other songs however, shared a different fate.
I can't explain how this song makes me feel. It draws out a lovely sense of melancholy.
My, how some of us are drawn to nostalgia later in life.
Its like a scent from the air that you catch with your nose and then it fades.
You try to draw air back in your nose to smell it again, but no.
    Something primeval from your adolescent.
You experience it once, and then chase that sensation.
Its like a person you loved, a friend, and then you see them again after a long time.
Like that first kiss, or that magnificent buzz from your first love.
You crave it again and again.
That's how this song makes me feel. Its beautiful.
An air of mystery every time those vibrations invade my ears.
I shall love this song, always.
Disclaimer, this is not an Ai response. This is me buzzed on Whiskey, loving this tune all over again.
I could ramble all night. But I won't.

joe22589 The Church has to date 25 studio albums with an incredibly wide range of songs from the bizarre, chaotic and psychedelic beauty of Day Of The Dead; Chromium; Vanishing Man; Anesthesia; Lunar and Trance Ending, just to name a small handful, to the melodic beauty of Two Places At Once; After Everything, Now This and straight up great rockers like Space Saviour and their new wave, jangly early stuff. Again
25 albums and I just mentioned a handful of songs. They have consistently put out great music for over 40 years and still going.

Lower the curtain down on Memphis
Lower the curtain down, all right
I got no time for private consultation
    Under the Milky Way tonight

Wish I knew what you were looking for
Might have known what you would find

    And it's something quite peculiar
    Something shimmering and white
It leads you here, despite your destination

🎶 Enveloped in Celestial Melodies: The Church's "Under The Milky Way" Live in Sydney 🎶
In the heart of Sydney, a musical journey into the cosmos unfolded as The Church delivered an enchanting live rendition of "Under The Milky Way." This iconic performance, captured by Moshcam, is a testament to the enduring allure of the song and the band's ability to transport audiences to a realm of ethereal beauty. From the first resonant chord, the audience is transported to a dreamscape that seems to exist beyond the confines of time and space. The haunting intro sets the stage for a sonic exploration that mirrors the song's title-a journey under the cosmic canopy. As the vocals begin, Steve Kilbey's voice weaves a delicate tapestry of emotion, infusing every lyric with a sense of introspection and mystery. The live setting adds a layer of intimacy to the performance, as the connection between the band and the audience becomes palpable. The atmospheric melodies intertwine seamlessly with the backdrop of the Sydney scene, creating an immersive experience that captures both the essence of the song and the energy of the live performance.
"Under The Milky Way" is a song that seems to transcend genres and eras, existing in a space of timelessness. In this live rendition, The Church captures the song's essence while adding new dimensions through their on-stage chemistry and improvisational touches. The instrumental arrangements ebb and flow like the tides of the ocean, creating an atmosphere that is at once serene and emotionally charged.
As the song reaches its crescendo, the audience is left hanging in the balance between the earthbound and the celestial. The interplay between guitars, bass, and drums creates a symphonic climax that is nothing short of breathtaking. The combination of sound and visuals becomes an experience that is both immersive and cathartic, leaving an indelible mark on the souls of those fortunate enough to witness it.
"Under The Milky Way" Live in Sydney is not just a performance-it's a cosmic voyage, an exploration of emotions, and a testament to the power of music to connect us to something larger than ourselves. The Church's ability to capture the essence of this timeless song while infusing it with new energy reaffirms their status as true musical pioneers.
In a world where moments of musical transcendence are rare, this performance stands as a beacon of inspiration-a reminder that through the universal language of music, we can journey to the farthest reaches of our imagination, guided by the celestial melodies of The Church. 🎵🌌

This song defies belief, transcending the boundaries of human creation. It's not merely about rhythm, melody, or voice; it encapsulates an entire symphony, as if the entire composition is the soundtrack to your waking and dream life.

A real favorite, been playing this for 3 decades on my 6 string Takamine and love it just as much now a 30 years ago. And I just got a 12 string, found in an antique shop; playing on capo 5 as done in this video on my new/old 1970s Penco 12 string sounds awesome! Love this tune,

+youtubkeeper They're actually fairly easy to use, but just like most other guitar techniques, it takes a lot of practice to use it well, and because of the nature of how it works, it's difficult to use consistently, if that makes any sense. If you play guitar I'd highly recommend picking one up because of how much fun they are!
