At the risk of sounding melodramatic, I was feeling very down in the dumps recently. Was struggling just to go out to the shops. My friend had a couple of tickets to see TWOD playing in Brighton. I had seen them play many times before and loved them. I was going to cancel due to my mood but I didn’t want to let my friend down. We drove down from London and were right up at the front when they came on. I lost myself in their music for 90 plus mins and felt an elation I hadn’t felt in a long time. We left the gig and we were both buzzing. Since that day, I’m feeling so much more positive. Seeing this video and seeing the joy on the faces of the beautiful Glastonbury crowd just makes me happy to be alive. Music ❤

I had the absolute privilege of being there and witnessing this. The War on Drugs got me through some tough times. Going through cancer treatment, not knowing if I would make it, I would listen to Red Eyes every night like a ritual singing me to sleep. It gave me such strength to go on. I vowed that when I got well, I would see them live. So I was elated to get tickets to see them play Ally Pally when I recovered, but then my husband was seriously ill in hospital so we had to cancel. This summer, 9 years on since they sang me to sleep, we happened to be working at Glastonbury and were so happy to see the line up. We watched legendary Cat Stevens and then it seemed like everyone at the festival was heading to the pyramid stage to watch Elton’s final show. Everyone except us!As we made our way in the opposite direction, against the crowd to the Other Stage we couldn’t believe our eyes. We walked right to the front of the stage. It felt like these guys were playing especially for us and as the sun set, a golden light engulfed us and they played the most euphoric, life affirming set we’ve ever experienced. Watching them felt like flying. We’d waited all these years, and here we were, happy and healthy with the greatest band on the planet transmitting us to another dimension! I love watching this back. It takes me to that moment and always brings happy tears to my eyes. I know that whatever happens in the future. No matter how difficult times might get. I will always have this beautiful memory to look back on. Thank you from the bottom of my heart The War on Drugs, you guys are truly the best.
What a beautiful story! This moment seems to have meant a lot to so many people. I saw the in Dublin this summer and it was a magical experience. Thank you for sharing!
Reading your comments brought a tear to my eye - the power of damn good music and the togetherness of a fully committed crowd of fans just can't be beaten
Quietly one of the greatest Glastonbury moments ever. How they draw the crowd in and they all explode into dancing after the breakdown and build. Makes me well up every time I watch it. What live music and outdoor festivals are all about
Funny. Sitting here working, watching/listening to YouTUbe and had the exact same reaction. Even knew it was coming. Gets me everytime. And their drummer, you can see how much he loves the build and coming through. Feels like he really drives that emotion.
A brilliant band. Thanks to my 32 year old son, he's introduced me to a lot of great bands in the last little while like The War On Drugs. I'm 67 and my teen years were listening to prog rock music. It's still my favourite type of music and my son likes a lot of bands I listen to. People of my age seem to criticize the music of today. Sure, there is some pretty crap music out there, but there is a lot of great music as well.
Its very rare you get a rock band who can make a "Drop" like at 4.56 minutes in. the build up is stunning, when it drops they have the entire crowed in their hands, i cant help smile whilst watching it. New favourite band. TWOD

Charlie Hall is an absolute beast - if you watch the other performance of this from Lowlands the bridge is even longer and he keeps the hi hats going for over 3 minutes or something before it breaks!
I will never get tired of watching this. Just a thrillingly transcendent musical experience. I remember watching it live, feeling the build up and then when the drop came completely losing my shit, hairs standing on the back of my neck, tears rolling down my cheeks, grinning like a moron. And I was on the sofa at home. Would give my right nut to have been there.
I've played drums for 44 years and observe that Charlie Hall has evolved into a smiling monster. But the "Mr. Fun" visage is only that -- beneath it, the dude will coldly, bloodlessly, remorselessly deliver the goods every time. I deeply admire great players who remember it can be fun.
Charlie... Animal from the muppets. The greatest compliment I can pay him. He fills me with more joy than I can possibly say. He loves his job. I love him as the most charismatic drummer out there.
Never seen Adam let the vocals rip like this and I can’t get enough. Never would’ve thought that the slower opening track back in 2014 would become the high energy highlight of their concerts it is now. Can’t wait for the next time I see them.
The Dublin show was like this as well, you could tell they had some time off after and he was just saying fuck it to his voice for a while, absolutely spellbinding!
Glastonbury will bring out the best in you but I think they've spent some time working out their live music. The early reviews weren't the best. I saw them in 2019 and Under the pressure wasn't delivered like this!
Best live band on the planet these days. When Charlie gets that look in his eye you know the drop is coming after the hypnotic breakdown.. NGL I get emotional
To be fair not many Glasto highlights make me stop and think 'I wish I was there' but this is incredible. The sound, the crowd, even the camerawork, the shot of the silhouette of the drummer with the sun setting behind (4:46) before the drop.... outrageous!
The most uplifting Glastonbury 2023 clip. The song has meaning, but ultimately it is about connection. The band, the crowd, the setting. Seems everyone is having a fantastic experience. Absolutely the best.
I chose The War on Drugs and Queen of the Stone Age over Elton. I was on the accessible viewing platform with my PA who had never heard them before. I was blown away as was she. They were utterly brilliant as were QOTSA who followed. One of the best Sunday nights at Glastonbury for me in decades. Loved every min.
They capture the specific 'feel' of an era of music, the sound of a short window of time, without ever feeling derivative of any one band or other act in particular. It's a kind of magic that just trips a switch in my brain, and takes me back to memories of driving on summer evenings with my dad while he played a whole bunch of his music. It's so effective.
I have watched this so many times and the build up and the breakdown makes me cry with happiness every time. This track has got me through some dark times.
This utterly exquisite footage captured for eternity by the BBC with such breathtaking imagery is beyond words. Thank you so much for posting. Much love Paully xxx
I don’t know whether I am being biased, as The War On Drugs are one of my favourite bands. But this is one of the best live performances I have ever seen from any band. Couldn’t imagine the euphoria of being in that crowd and being drenched in the most amazing sound. It’s a shame many won’t see this performance, hopefully they’ve gained new fans from it. Long live TWOD.
As a huge fan of this brilliant band and after seeing them live many times, I have to totally agree with you. This was an Epic performance!!! I so wish I were there. I’ve watched this set every evening until it was removed from the BBC IPlayer. Just watching it was an absolute joy, I love the crowd too, some would have been fans and for others it would have been the first time seeing/hearing them. If you listen to the playlist of this gig (sound only) on here, it sounds even better. But I hope one day the video of the whole set is posted on here as I love seeing the band the crowd and the sunset.
Have watched this countless times and everytime I get goosebumps when the song kicks back in after the breakdown. The angle of the sun in the sky, the wave of joy across the crowd, makes me wish I was there every single time. Seems like a moment when however rough you might be feeling from the previous nights' exersions just wash away in an instant and the night ahead is full of excited anticipation. Sharing that experience with your favourite people is up there with the best feelings in the world. Must have been a real privilege to have been there.
For the last 5 years it’s the only band that makes me cry of happiness when I listen to them. Thanks for the great performance. I hope to see them live on stage one day too. ❤
I started crying from nowhere in attendance here - first during Red Eyes, then another song in the middle and then this. I'd listened to "Lost in the Dream" a fair bit in 2014 but it was seeing them live for first time that triggered it. It is much louder and more danceable live. Never happened to me during a gig before, have come close during Mogwai & Radiohead. Epic.
@@markbutcher9403 well said, the war on drugs were absolutely amazing on Sunday.. and as someone who has seen Mogwai and Radiohead repeatedly, I totally get the effects they have on you
Watched this so many times the past week. Had never listened to WOD before. I sat watching bbc and they came on. The whole set phenomenal. What a band. Thank you Glastonbury for bringing me music new to me, you do it every year
This really is as good as it gets. A band and audience in perfect harmony, under a setting sun at the greatest music festival on the planet. It sounded just as epic in the moment.
This was the 5th time i had seen them perform, and the first time i ever saw Adam let go like that. the energy was incredible and with the setting sun on the final day it was the most perfect moment. also probably my favourite thing about watching this band perform is looking at how much fun Charlie Hall is having behind those drums, what a pleasure watching him play!
I feel the same. I’m a longtime drummer, and I know exactly how that breakdown and buildup feels when you are about to drop the beat. You think seeing it is phenomenal, the ecstasy of the moment is indescribable! You feel the crowd carry you and you carry the crowd. Drummers live in their own little world apart from the band. And Charlie is just magnetic and that’s the epitome of what a passionate drummer can bring to a band, especially live. You get so tap-happy it’s hard to contain yourself and stay sitting on your throne. Happy to see people celebrate a drummer so much. We never get the praise that we’re due.
What a wonderful band, I'm 46 years old and I thought real music was over. This band gives me joy, hope gets me emotional everytime I hear them. Love You War On Drugs!!!!.
Don't think I've ever listened to a song as much in my life and still get that brilliant feeling every time that I had when I first heard it. TWOD have been one of the best live bands in the world for a decade or more and this Glasto set just cements that reputation. Awesome.
This is one of the most beautiful things ever filmed. The music in itself is a work of art, but the film crew that captured the magic and edited it really created a masterpiece. When I watch this ( and I usually do multiple times a day) it gives me hope for humanity!
Cheers BBC for filming this little piece of pure joy !! Just a perfect sunday afternoon right there ..... sunset.....beer......and a band at the height of their craft. perfect.
This is just one of those epic sunset performances at Glastonbury that I keep revisiting. Everyone is just so joyful you can feel it pouring out of the video. If I want to go back to Glast for a moment then this ticks the box without question.
I watch this everywhere. In the gym working out, on a bar stool, when I'm up m, when I'm down. It transcends all those personal things. Just humanity at it's finest point of reference. And so few know how powerful this is. Kinda like it's our guilty pleasure.
*_It's a shame this great band wasn't featured more prominently than some of the utter garbage that was overly promoted and on the main_* *_stage - Such a gifted, underrated band ..._*
He keeps those 8th notes on the hats steady throughout the whole time which isn’t easy bc your hands and wrist cramp up after a minute or two. And yes, he plays in the pocket the whole song, and it’s nice to see a drummer stand up during a set. That’s Superman level performance. I feel how much ecstasy he is feeling in that buildup as a drummer of 23 years. The buildup gets me air drumming when the drums come back in to carry the song and I’m tearing up and imagining a better world at the same time. I don’t recall feeling that throughout my life.
Everytime I'm sad, or down, I just pretend I'm that guy stood on the shoulders of his mates, shirt off, not giving a fuck in the glastonbury sun. That's living man
I’ve seen The War On Drugs 5 times and each time they blow me away. Truly one of the best bands out there and there live show is one of the most surreal experiences you’ll ever whiteness.
Been following this band for years, great to see a UK crowd responding, and as usual Charlie the drummer cutting loose after the 'drop' at about 4:50. Brilliant band, I'm sure they have a lot more fans now. Just brilliant.
Saw them live twice last year and the unspoken ENERGY in the crowd during the anticipation of the drum interlude climax is almost indescriable. Just building joy and emotion and it all bursts out at the same time, all together. A real human experience!
Seen them twice with my Son and they just touch something inside that not many bands can plug into. If you get the chance to see them, they are awesome🎉❤
I love this song so much and it’s awesome how the crowd lift as the song builds. The smiles on the crowds faces tell you that their loving every bit of this
I’ve been following this band since the slave ambient days and seen them 17 times over the last 12 years it’s been a great thrill to see them grow into 1 of the greatest bands of all time
I first saw them on a tiny boat in Bristol in 2008 when Kurt Vile was still in the band (my mate’s band were supporting, we all hung out backstage afterwards - such nice guys), didn’t seem them again til Bristol Harbourside last summer, and Adam mentioned that very same gig!
@@tompoynton I saw them around that time also here in Portland, Oregon at a tiny dive bar . Capacity was 200 people at the most . I cannot believe how popular they have become since then .
I’ve seen them play live quite a few times too! Standout gigs were a few years ago at the Bristol 02, and the Brixton Academy! More recently saw Kurt Vile on the Monday in Camden and TWOD on the following Saturday . They were Epic!! Adam G seems so down to earth, I saw Anthony L outside the Brighton Centre and was desperate to say hello. I didn’t bother him as I lost my nerve and he was on the phone. I would love to meet them one day. Discovered them after stumbling on a KEXP performance on here. Was blown away. By far my favourite live band. Wish I was there at Glastonbury to be a part of this great moment.
looks like heaven , i was lucky enough to witness the same thing at Forbidden fruit in Dublin one summer as the sun set behind the stage , i just got Goosebumps and tears in my eyes as i started typing this . Big love to everyone out there, music can really get you through stuff
Hands down the performance of the weekend. Just absolutely superb stuff. Got into them a few years ago, via a couple mates, and then was blown away after seeing live them recently, they could well be the best band I’ve seen live.
Went to see them on Tuesday night in Liverpool - 2hrs of pure bliss. First saw them at the Manchester Apollo in Nov 2017 - 64yrs old and still enjoying my gigs. Want to see Manchester Orchestra when they next tour.
Definitely! The War on Drugs by a country mile. Where they scheduled at the same time than Elton John? I thought it was Phoenix. Honestly, The War on Drugs and Phoenix do a lot more for me than the other fella.
Their performance (watching the full hour) was absolutely brilliant, I've been aware of them for years and years but didn't take any notice until now , was literally welling up by the end of their set just because of the sonics and vocals (!), I didn't need the words it seemed. They really took me with them despite not being there with them. I gotta go and see these live.
Top 3 song of my live songs in the 20th Century, completely underrated singer and guitar player and the drummer is a banger. Please all you other bands, make the Sax great again
Never fails to move me emotionally every time I play this… it’s just epic, sensational, a masterpiece - watching it again on a plane flying across east to west USA on a loop, bawling my eyes out - fuck me, I’m a 58 year old tough guy, how can they impact me like this every time… just an incredible performance.
This is easily one of my most favourite feel good songs. There is no way you can listen to this and not have a smile on your face. It's that bloody good ❤️

Still can't fathom how a band can make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck every single time I watch/listen. It's like a magic trick
Thanks for the recommendation - I'll check them out!@elijahfinch3349
For the last 5 years it’s the only band that makes me cry of happiness when I listen to them. Thanks for the great performance. I hope to see them live on stage one day too. ❤
I started crying from nowhere in attendance here - first during Red Eyes, then another song in the middle and then this. I'd listened to "Lost in the Dream" a fair bit in 2014 but it was seeing them live for first time that triggered it. It is much louder and more danceable live. Never happened to me during a gig before, have come close during Mogwai & Radiohead. Epic.
@@markbutcher9403 well said, the war on drugs were absolutely amazing on Sunday.. and as someone who has seen Mogwai and Radiohead repeatedly, I totally get the effects they have on you
yeah me too, the sonics just brought tears to my eyes by the end of the 1 hr Glastonbury set.
100% agree
Same
Watched this so many times the past week. Had never listened to WOD before. I sat watching bbc and they came on. The whole set phenomenal. What a band. Thank you Glastonbury for bringing me music new to me, you do it every year
One of the most underrated bands in the world. This performance is just something else. Gorgeous, amazing and powerful.
This really is as good as it gets. A band and audience in perfect harmony, under a setting sun at the greatest music festival on the planet. It sounded just as epic in the moment.
the greatest, most original band in america right now. hands down.
I saw these followed by queens of the Stone Age on the same stage instead of Elton John. Best decision I’ve ever made
I found out about this band 2-3 years ago and….yes I listen to it every day since, what a band
This is what rock music is all about. Absolutly incredible!
What a wonderful band, I'm 46 years old and I thought real music was over. This band gives me joy, hope gets me emotional everytime I hear them. Love You War On Drugs!!!!.
That silhouette of Charlie with the sun setting as the mid section reaches the crescendo- perfection!!
Complete musicians, on top of their craft. Outstanding.
Don't think I've ever listened to a song as much in my life and still get that brilliant feeling every time that I had when I first heard it.
TWOD have been one of the best live bands in the world for a decade or more and this Glasto set just cements that reputation. Awesome.
This won glastonbury
it doesn't get any better than this
This is one of the most beautiful things ever filmed. The music in itself is a work of art, but the film crew that captured the magic and edited it really created a masterpiece. When I watch this ( and I usually do multiple times a day) it gives me hope for humanity!
The War on Drugs is MACnificent!
*_It's a shame this great band wasn't featured more prominently than some of the utter garbage that was overly promoted and on the main_* *_stage - Such a gifted, underrated band ..._*
there’s no need to tear down other acts when you compliment one. there’s many different types of music for many different people
@@conormaloney455
*_That's my opinion, just as you have yours - Difference is, I don't care about your opinion ..._*
they are big in belgium holland headlkiners there
@@THENOETIE
*_That's good to hear ..._*
The festival had to clash as many good bands with Elton as possible for crowd control purposes
Talk about “in the pocket” what a fantastic drummer Charlie Hall is.
Just recently discovered this band - brilliant
This is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen at Glastonbury…..I don’t have the words
agreed, it's just incredible
Song is like a runaway Roller Coaster. One of today's best drummers. Thanks BBC for the sterling coverage.
Incredible performance, perfect editing. The pure joy of it all is beautiful.
Just here to get my daily dose of goosebumps
same
Everytime I'm sad, or down, I just pretend I'm that guy stood on the shoulders of his mates, shirt off, not giving a fuck in the glastonbury sun. That's living man
❤
Best song ever. Been only on one concert, my best 2 hours in my life.
This is absolutely beautiful, a quintessential Glastonbury moment. Everyone seems so happy when it all kicks in. What a moment.
I’ve seen The War On Drugs 5 times and each time they blow me away. Truly one of the best bands out there and there live show is one of the most surreal experiences you’ll ever whiteness.
This so good and first time I’ve seen them on tv. I’ll have to check there music for sure.
This band should HEADLINE Glastonbury every year from now on. Actually I think they should headline every festival on the planet from now on.
Phenomenal!!
Agreed. It is bubbling everytime and then the cork pops
Goose bumps every time!
I've just re-watched that video for the 34023859304th time. Just fantastic !
Me too. Incredible 😊
Seen them twice with my Son and they just touch something inside that not many bands can plug into. If you get the chance to see them, they are awesome🎉❤
His delivery of the verse starting at 5:25 was amazing.
Agree😳.
I love this song so much and it’s awesome how the crowd lift as the song builds. The smiles on the crowds faces tell you that their loving every bit of this
War on drugs have become one of the great bands of our time. Incredible performances everywhere.
You are a lucky person to have seen them live, I love them but am yet to break my duck seeing them.
@@tompoynton Very cool that you got to meet them. Adam G comes across like a very personable dude.
looks like heaven , i was lucky enough to witness the same thing at Forbidden fruit in Dublin one summer as the sun set behind the stage , i just got Goosebumps and tears in my eyes as i started typing this . Big love to everyone out there, music can really get you through stuff
The song, the crowd, the Sun, the setting… brings tears to my eyes. Absolute magic🤘🏼
It makes me all teary as well! A setting Sun, amazing vibe in the crowd and a brilliant tune is what makes Glastonbury awesome
Hands down the performance of the weekend. Just absolutely superb stuff.
Got into them a few years ago, via a couple mates, and then was blown away after seeing live them recently, they could well be the best band I’ve seen live.
+1
Went to see them on Tuesday night in Liverpool - 2hrs of pure bliss.
First saw them at the Manchester Apollo in Nov 2017 - 64yrs old and still enjoying my gigs.
Want to see Manchester Orchestra when they next tour.
Elton John was great don't get me wrong, but I know where I would of been at Glasto on Sunday night. These were different class. Sublime 👏
Would HAVE been !!!!!
Fully agreed, this is far better than chewing gum music !
Definitely!
The War on Drugs by a country mile.
Where they scheduled at the same time than Elton John? I thought it was Phoenix.
Honestly, The War on Drugs and Phoenix do a lot more for me than the other fella.
@@condimentking414same, those were the two shows I was looking forward to the most by a mile, with Chvrches and alt-j
@@TDM1165 I heartily agree, I was refering to the act itself. It was bad.
Not really seen heard these before but they blew me away, and this track was amazing.
This is incredible and gives me goosebumps every time I listen. So glad I got to see them live in Halifax 2023!
Quite easily one of my favourite bands, absolute genius and the sun setting is perfect for this absolute monster of a tune 👌🏻
totally agree, it's majestic!
Lost in the dream and a deeper understanding are just unbelievable records..
4 weeks later. Can we all say this was the best set of the weekend
Absolutely stunning
Absolutely yes we can … best band at Glasto this year without any doubt. Out played everyone else in my opinion.
yes. without a doubt.
💯 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Best live rendering of this anthem. Incredible.
That drop at 4.58 is perfection ❤
Top 3 song of my live songs in the 20th Century, completely underrated singer and guitar player and the drummer is a banger. Please all you other bands, make the Sax great again
I have rarely seen a band. With a drummer like a machine and a live sound where you can hear every instrument individually.
It's that bloody good ❤️
This song always gives me the goosebumps. It’s the most incredible song.
Damn, they're feeling it at 5:50. Bloody hell. Amazing.
That's rock n roll damn right
This song is such a freaking ride.... I love every second of it! ❤
I lost both my parents within a week a month ago and for some reason this song is getting me through it 😢
I'm so sorry.
I hope time and music will help you to heal
It's amazing how music as a force can see you through the tough and difficult times
This is the best live performance of any song ever.
They are a ray of light in life's and some musical darkness, musical honesty, great musicianship, a touch of melancholy and joy, look at the audience, that says it all! Terri Leckner, Montreal
@elijahfinch3349 Thanks Elijah, I will, need to hear some good new music anyways! Terri
I get those feel good chills when it drops at 4'55" Pure gold.
This was a phenomenal set, one of the most underrated performances of the whole Glastonbury festival this year. What an incredible band they are 👏👌
This band is such an addiction. Saw them in Paris 2 days before. You're lucky Glastonbury.
This song means soooo much to me, what an incredible performance!
