The close ups of the band were done before they let us in as we could hear this song being played over and over again while waiting in the lobby. Signs at the door said they would be filming. I was 4th row right side on the floor in front of Marty and it was amazing!
Finally got to see The Church live about a month ago. I think Kilbey's the only original member left, but it was still a great show. This one brought the house down.

I've heard other songs by the Church and certainly know all the great bands from the land Down Under, but this is a revelation. Didn't know this song existed until today. Back in 86 or the whereabouts Marty came to a show of my band in LA. He and his friend approached me after our gig and asked if I wanted to fly to Australia and record the drums for his solo album. My band was on the verge of being signed and didn’t want to leave them hanging as we were playing together since 81 when we were 13 year olds. I think Marty liked one of our songs and probably hummed it over and over. This song here was faster at the time he saw us and we slowed it down for the recording. The guitar hook in the chorus is the same as Reptile just different timing and probably a different key. A guitarist will know what I’m talking about. Believe it or not I believe we had an influence on him that night. Our singer played a couple of solo shows with Marty in Los Angeles and Marty did have a copy of our record therefor having Kevin open up for him. Hope you guys like it and listen to full record when you can. The Church are one of my all time favorites, saw them a few times back then. th-cam.com/video/evGuJ3_LL6s/w-d-xo.html
Marty Wilson Piper is an incredible guy. Meeting in person last year was one of the happiest days of that year. He signed all The Church records I had. He's my neighbour now and my friend. This song marks a turning point for me. I live in San Diego, where the classic rock station is 101.5 FM, which I listened to from 1986 to 1993. It was fine and all, however, after about seven years of hearing Led Zeppelin and the Stones over and over again, it started getting old. So, one day, I started channel surfing when I came across this song on 91x (the alternative rock station). It had already been out for a few years, but it sounded very fresh to me because I had been listening to Zep and the Stones over and over again. I loved it, and over the next few months, I kept listening to 91x waiting for them to play it again. They never did (at least not when I was listening); however, all the time I spent listening/waiting, I was hearing other excellent alternative rock bands, e.g., Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Cracker, etc., and came to realize that the then-new music was just as good if not better than that classic dinosaur stuff I had been listening to. Today, while I maybe a a few months shy of 53, I still listen to 91x ("The 'cutting edge' of rock") and am up to date on all the newest and "coolest" bands - all thanks to The Church and Reptile. Thanks for reading, and until next time - peace out!
Remember hearing this song & story at an Amnesty International concert in 86 at the Omni Atlanta GA on how much it moved me… So much injustice in the world still happening…
There’s something about The Church. Their music has a wonderful, distinct effect on me. It brings out a better side of me. This song is about disgust and contempt, yet expresses those feelings in a classy way, with a hint of melancholy, and a sense of running liberation from a malicious force.
Great song. Reminds me of a certain girl who eventually scammed a large amount of cash from me. She had great eyes, a beautiful smile and ultimately a cold empty heart. Fascinating to hear the other interpretations of these lyrics.
Saw them open up for Echo and the Bunnymen in the late 80s in Boston. They played this song and the way the guitars echoed through the auditorium sent shivers down my spine. I still crush on Marty, and on Steve's voice.
I never thought that when I listened to them back in the eighties that I’d end up doing the artwork for the Kilbey Kennedy album Jupiter 13...funny how life is .
I am a metal lover. Pantera, old Metallica, old Queensryche, DLR Van Halen, and I have always liatened to The Church. The moods of the music. Guitar sounds. I listen to the whole aspect of the song.

That's actually a really cool variation between the two. I like it
@DM You should have allowed comments on your song! It is a good song and still holds up today!
Glad I was scrolling through the comments. Clicked on your link and already, the beginning of your song is beautiful. Thank you
Marty Wilson Piper is an incredible guy. Meeting in person last year was one of the happiest days of that year. He signed all The Church records I had. He's my neighbour now and my friend. He will create a spot here in Porto where ppl can listen to thousands of records and read hundreds of music magazines. I am happy to have donated some...
@@OlhOrebOque sounds like a great guy! Ask him if he still needs a drummer cause I’m available 😂
Believe me when I say I wish I could of recorded on his solo 80’s stuff it would of been amazing. Also, if and when you see him again tell him Damien from Sixtieth Parallel says “hi” and next time he is in Southern California to look me up thanks!
Just heard this song for the first time ever! Wow, trade me 2019 for 1988. God please Take Cardi B and all the commercial no talent modern day singers and bring back true artist!!
Amen to that!
this was only played on College / indie stations . Which are dying today.
Alexis Palacios Just discovered them now at 18-23 pm G.M.T. on the 23/01/20 👍
Why do “everyone” seem to believe that this music or any sort of non-commercial music was popular back then? I mean they were big, but not huge.
Alexis - That would be terrific!!
Back in the day I think I was one of the last kids to get 11 albums on cassettes for 1 penny out of a magazine ad.. This was one of those albums. Good times!
Ustedes son niveles más avanzados de música.
Una maravilla ❤
What a mesmerizing song. The guitar is absolutley enthralling ... I see a woman/ snake with diamond eyes reaching out to him and he can't resist her. What a genius song.
Effe Emme Baja California… Mexico
More British than the Brits. Incredible hook and great emo sense.
Remember hearing this song & story at an Amnesty International concert in 86 at the Omni Atlanta GA on how much it moved me… So much injustice in the world still happening…
I don't know how they wrote this, but it's one of the best interplays of guitar I've ever heard.
😢😩😭😭♥️🔥💯💋 I SOOOO MISS THE 80S! LOVE YOU GUYS! THE CHURCH NEVER DIES! LOVE FROM
A DUTCHIE! 🇵🇾
The guitar riff in this is hypnotizing
No smart phones limited television no garbage social media interaction. Imagine hearing this at a house party in the 80s? Bro come on
You sound maybe you were there?
Its strange when talent is left behind..the 80's gave us some amazing sound
Saw them at First Avenue in Minneapolis in 1988
Four musicians at the peak of their powers, and every one of them is playing something completely different; yet the song just works! Perfection.
One of my favorites for karaoke.
Fantastic! Going to see them in a couple of weeks. Been a while. Saw them last in Australia in 1983! Love this band, this song. Thanks for posting!
That opening guitar riff. Flawless victory.
This is one of the most beautiful catchy and melodic rock songs that I have ever heard. Criminally underrated. Fact!
Just saw in Detroit at Majestic. AMAZING show. This SONG was FANTASTIC. You guys are so talented and rock!
There’s something about The Church. Their music has a wonderful, distinct effect on me. It brings out a better side of me. This song is about disgust and contempt, yet expresses those feelings in a classy way, with a hint of melancholy, and a sense of running liberation from a malicious force.
Another totally underrated band. I never stopped listening to them.
Saw them live recently and they still sound amazing after all these years. Great band to see live if you get a chance.
The Church freaking rocks!! I remember buying this cd at Hastings in the 90’s!!!
This song is unreal..such a unique sound.
yes.....absolute it most beautiful love is beautifu and rare....
its a masterpiece. The feeling it creates.
One of the most amazing songs I've ever heard. The musicianship is just impeccable.
One of the most underrated band of all time, Absolutely beautiful songs
This is an awesome song. I used to listen to this song on vinyl with the lights turned off, laying on my bed, late at night, back in the 80s.
Me too 💓
My dad just picked this vinyl up and we turned the lights out to experience the music
Melody and counter point, this song is extravagantly beautiful, always has been one of my favorites
James Gilmore., Awesome comment, and Truth 🤜💥🤛
I LOVED these guys in the late 80s. And you know what? They hold up today, in 2022. Rock!
SHE WAS THE APPLE OF MY EYE, BUT THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO...
And I should have believed Eve
She said we had to blow
She was the apple of my eye
It wasn't long ago
The two-guitar interplay on here is perfect.
I love this song! The guitars, the drums, the tempo, plus the lyrics and voice... all fit perfectly together in this masterpiece of sound and mistery.
How Steve sings this song is hypnotic.....almost disdain in his looks & glances
I never thought that when I listened to them back in the eighties that I’d end up doing the artwork for the Kilbey Kennedy album Jupiter 13...funny how life is .
The most romantic anti-love song you can find out there. Absolutely brilliant piece of music.
you could play this time today at any indie venue and no one would notice it's not from 1985, 1995, 2005 or 2015
I am a metal lover. Pantera, old Metallica, old Queensryche, DLR Van Halen, and I have always liatened to The Church. The moods of the music. Guitar sounds. I listen to the whole aspect of the song.
1988... what memories 😳😑😭🤧
Thanks 😉🎸🎶 🇦🇺
Nothing on god's green earth ever sounded like this ever again. The album- 'Starfish.'
The best bass line ever.

Saw them with Peter Murphy. What an awesome concert.
Nice double bill, one two punch
Such a killer song, the video is just about perfect, filmed in the 80’s at the beautiful Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. Somehow everything just fits perfectly
At .06, that rattlesnake roll just punctuates and foreshadows the tune. Amazing!
That opening guitar is absolutely haunting. A fucking PLUS
I needed this tonight.. just me and my headphones 🎧
One of the greatest riffs in rock.
This is such a brilliant description of a toxic relationship gone to pieces and Steve Kilby's vocals just intensifies in this hypnotic masterpiece
Im kicking myself hard. I Was supposed to see this band in 1988 when I was at FSU we partied too hard the night before! DAMNIT I moved to Oz 10 years later
I just discovered this song 🎵🎶. I can't get enough. I love it 🎸
the best son of the 80s
This song is a true hidden gem. So beautiful. It should be one of the most viewed songs ever!
I'm an 80's scrub.
Proud of it.
Another great tune to play on repeat!
This is my favorite song by The Church.. So dark and eerie .. A classic..
