The flat rate she mentioned was the rate for 4 sessions. She didn't lie. The word rate shows that it was not a single one time payment. Also 15 k is chump change.

There's literally several modern ones if you just put down your Switch and pick up a PS5. Literally like half a dozen on PS5 and Stellar Blade is dropping soon on it too witch honestly looks better graphically or combat whise then Bayo ever has.
Aside from these I can't think of many pure action games with deep combat mechanics, and by deep I mean more than just having a parry, I'm talking combo options, enemy state manipulation etc..

It's insane how much Taylor lost out on not taking the bayo3 deal. Not only is it gonna be the biggest game in the series by a LONG SHOT, voicing all these different variants of a character is THE scenario that lets you show off your voice acting talents the most, I think, possible! She was never intended to voice Bayonetta 3 entirely, they just wanted her to voice the short appearance of the Bayonetta 1 character. It was always McHale for 3.

Bayonetta is my favorite game series of all time, and your review has made me more hype for this game than I could have possibly imagined. I just wanted to highlight how good of a video this is.
Those are only disappointments if you expected them to be good. There was nothing in anything they showed off about those games that suggested they would be anything more than mediocre.
Isn't it refreshing, when a game gets announced long time ago, keeps getting pushed back, and when it finally comes out... it is good, and not an unfinished nightmare that got pushed out to recoup some of the development cost.
It's also the same old stale formula carried over all the way from DMC1. Yes developers are different now, but DMC5 was already pushing it without reinventing itself. Now 3 and half years later we get this... So no, the game is absolutely NOT refreshing, it needs way more changes and new fresh ideas and elements.
For real. Thats a rarity these days. Especially in the wake of games like cyberpunk and Gotham Knights. I suspect the next big flop will be hogwarts legacy

Great review! About the verse issue though, I feel like that is easily solved as you go up the difficulties. Platinum has always done difficulty right. Beating normal is just the tutorial. Once you get up to Nonstop Climax difficulty (I'm assuming that's what the hardest difficulty is called again), every verse should be remixed with different enemy placements, etc. This is assuming they did the same here, of course.
Couldn't agree more, it's hard to review most platinum games on the first play-through since the games really don't shine or even many of the core mechanics don't become apparent until subsequent play-throughs. Same could be said about most character spectacle action games.
Ralph, people who like grinding for Pure Platinum kinda need the verse structure. Devil May Cry 5 is no different. People don't replay the whole level, you reset the verse that you're currently stuck on to get Pure Platinum. And it's not a hardware limitation either. For comparison, DMC 5 is also a fairly new action game that uses a similar structure. It's what fans of these games expect from the structure. They don't want an open-world with character-action gameplay, it needs a more rigid structure otherwise it kinda defeats the point of the game.

The verse structure is just intrinsic to the game style. It isn't a hardware limitation factor considering DMC5 pretty much still uses the same structure. It's just always been there.
I'm really really glad that Hellena Taylor's lies didn't manage to raise a massive boycott against this game. The people who actually worked on this deserve all the praise.

Big fan of the series, and for the first part of 3 I was like "This is more Bayonetta, and I am happy about that." Then I got the train. It wasn't enough to simply put summonable demons in the game - summoning the train was a real "Holy shit" moment, one that I never could have predicted, one that gives the player a truly unique tool that I've never seen anything like in a spectacle action game. That was the moment the game went from "More of what I love!" to "Platinum are off their fucking rocker and I am here for it."

I take issue with Nintendo because of how constricting their hardware is to third parties. People like to defend Nintendo hardware because of what Nintendo does with it for their games but what about everyone else??? Microsoft and Sony go out of their way to work with developers when designing hardware, but Nintendo designs hardware to meet only their own requirements. They need to be more accommodating, the hardware should enable creative expression not stifle it.
I don't really see the problem, if the game is fun I'm happy. True, they need to work on it but I don't think people need to get all stressed out about it, they will get it eventually. It's still only a hobby, gaming is.

I kinda feel like these kind of games always really come into their own in their 3rd installment, onimusha 3, dmc 3 and god of war 3 really stepped it up in the amount of content and the actual gameplay depth, and now we got Bayonetta 3 to step it up again
Speaking of mastery… you know the other mistake they made? Not making Jeanne playable during the main story. It’s somewhat understandable but I really prefer using Jeanne just like in the previous 2 games. Her ability to use Witch TIme primarily on hit rather than before getting hit is such a flex. Well, like you said… hopefully this game will have a remaster/remake on a future Nintendo console where they’ll do it like they used to.

The verse structure critique is somewhat voided by the inclusion of the training area. Bayonetta games are - by design - built to be played numerous times over. The training area allows you to hone your skills, perfect those combos and, more importantly (I'd argue) spend time learning how to talk to ladies. For real though I'm fine with the verse structure. Not every game needs to chuck away core design philosophies, a la Elden Ring, to succeed.
Like you said, I'd imagine the 'verse structure' is so that they can easily swap out monsters on harder modes, since usually the first playthrough is the tutorial/learning phase and it ratchets things up on the two or three difficulties that unlock after. Did you have a chance to try those out (if they exist)? I know you said it was just one playthrough, but I hope it gets challenging later on.
I don't think there's truly a problem with the "verse structure" itself, it's just that the verses themselves are way too short compared to Bayonetta 1. This was one of the biggest issues of the sequel as well.
The levels are split into verses for the sake of the ranking system. Instead of just getting a score and rank at the very end of a stage, you get ranked on a bunch of individual battles which gives you clear short-term goals to work towards and makes it easy to see how you can improve and what parts of a stage you struggled with. It also means you can relax a bit and take your time exploring between verses without worry that it will hurt your rank.
It's because you're supposed to replay it over and over again on harder difficulties. Go play bayo 2 on nonstop climax and come tell me you can quickly clear those verses. It's fucking nuts.
Seriously, if he thinks this game didn't give him enough breathing room to master the combat, he should see TF Devastation... that game's like 5 hours long at most and kinda just ends suddenly.
I'm waiting on performance reviews bayonetta 1 and 2 had performance drops which is why i play them on PC and Emulation but since none of these early reviews do performance analysis i might have to just get the game and do one my own. i hope it holds a steady FPS the Switch is seriously GPU limited

Not everyone WANTS games prioritizing power platforms tethered to the TV. Lord knows we have enough of those. In 5 years, 120 million ppl have voted with their wallets and said, "we want games designed for a hybrid system, EVEN IF that means it won't look as impressive". And this is a game for those ppl. You're free to enjoy it also if you want, but complaining a hybrid game didn't prioritize power platforms is about as pointless as someone complaining a game for power platforms wasn't designed ground up for a handheld. The industry is big enough for both. Don't get greedy thinking EVERY game has to target your preferences.

Versus are good actually, imagine trying not to get hit for 6 minutes straight only to get hit at the last minute, soul crushing. The battles being short are a mercy to the core fan base that will replay chapters to get those elusive platinum ranks.
Spoilers I love this game overall but damn did they do Jeanne dirty. Both in terms of story and gameplay. No alternate costumes and you can't play as her in normal levels? The way they killed her off too. It seems like they did it just so Bayonetta would end up with Luka. That feels so forced. And why did they not give any sort of explanation how everything is somehow back to normal in the final scene? Again, great game overall but I really feel like they flubbed the ending. Sorry for the rant.
I'm so hyped for this game, While I did play the first game on ps3 (it was terrible not the game but the ps3) I recently bought both 1 and 2 on Switch just to prepare and god are these games so amazingly good, I can't believe that both sold somewhere near 3 units they deserve so much more. With so many IPs getting out of what now feels like arbitrary exclusivity deals, I'd love to see Bayonetta make its way to PC. The innuendos practically write themselves. Resolutions big enough to make a witch blush. Go at it harder and faster with unlocked framerates. An experience so enhanced, it'll feel like your first time.
Nintendo didn't pay for exclusivity. They funded the entire development cost. So it won't be multi-platform any time soon. So your only chance would be emulation most likely.
Id love for the new byo condoms to PC, but at the same time I respect Nintendo for picking up the IP to support platinum in finishing byo 2 and now supporting the releasing of 3 after year's of development, it's a true exclusive and not that timed nonsense we get now

Hard disagree about Verses. I think Bayonetta holds a unique place in modern games, where it wants to encourage replay value and have these trophies for playing the game beyond the bare minimum. Verses act both as a collectible, since so many are hidden in the environment and get you to see the environments to their fullest, and as a way to perfect your play. Even with small encounters, going for Perfect Platinum requires you to be aware of your combos and aware of their attacks. I understand if you don’t care about replay value, since I also usually don’t. But even then, I think the smaller fights in the older games were still their own challenge. Since I liked at least trying to perform well.

Great review! About the verse issue though, I feel like that is easily solved as you go up the difficulties. Platinum has always done difficulty right. Beating normal is just the tutorial. Once you get up to Nonstop Climax difficulty (I'm assuming that's what the hardest difficulty is called again), every verse should be remixed with different enemy placements, etc. This is assuming they did the same here, of course.
Regarding Bayonetta I always say "First time is to watch the story, second time is to play the game" haha

Couldn't agree more, it's hard to review most platinum games on the first play-through since the games really don't shine or even many of the core mechanics don't become apparent until subsequent play-throughs. Same could be said about most character spectacle action games.

Ralph, people who like grinding for Pure Platinum kinda need the verse structure. Devil May Cry 5 is no different. People don't replay the whole level, you reset the verse that you're currently stuck on to get Pure Platinum.
And it's not a hardware limitation either. For comparison, DMC 5 is also a fairly new action game that uses a similar structure. It's what fans of these games expect from the structure. They don't want an open-world with character-action gameplay, it needs a more rigid structure otherwise it kinda defeats the point of the game.

The verse structure is just intrinsic to the game style. It isn't a hardware limitation factor considering DMC5 pretty much still uses the same structure. It's just always been there.
Finished 1 and 2. Started 3 and was like, "WTF is THIS!?" Once we were all chillin in the Gates of hell....I was like, "Oh....f**k YEAH!!" I LOVED IT.

I'm not even fully convinced, this isn't some kind of publicity stunt, because the story they're going with seems unbelievable stupid.
Big fan of the series, and for the first part of 3 I was like "This is more Bayonetta, and I am happy about that." Then I got the train. It wasn't enough to simply put summonable demons in the game - summoning the train was a real "Holy shit" moment, one that I never could have predicted, one that gives the player a truly unique tool that I've never seen anything like in a spectacle action game. That was the moment the game went from "More of what I love!" to "Platinum are off their fucking rocker and I am here for it."

I take issue with Nintendo because of how constricting their hardware is to third parties. People like to defend Nintendo hardware because of what Nintendo does with it for their games but what about everyone else???
Microsoft and Sony go out of their way to work with developers when designing hardware, but Nintendo designs hardware to meet only their own requirements. They need to be more accommodating, the hardware should enable creative expression not stifle it.

I kinda feel like these kind of games always really come into their own in their 3rd installment, onimusha 3, dmc 3 and god of war 3 really stepped it up in the amount of content and the actual gameplay depth, and now we got Bayonetta 3 to step it up again

Speaking of mastery… you know the other mistake they made? Not making Jeanne playable during the main story. It’s somewhat understandable but I really prefer using Jeanne just like in the previous 2 games. Her ability to use Witch TIme primarily on hit rather than before getting hit is such a flex. Well, like you said… hopefully this game will have a remaster/remake on a future Nintendo console where they’ll do it like they used to.

The verse structure critique is somewhat voided by the inclusion of the training area. Bayonetta games are - by design - built to be played numerous times over. The training area allows you to hone your skills, perfect those combos and, more importantly (I'd argue) spend time learning how to talk to ladies.
For real though I'm fine with the verse structure. Not every game needs to chuck away core design philosophies, a la Elden Ring, to succeed.
Like you said, I'd imagine the 'verse structure' is so that they can easily swap out monsters on harder modes, since usually the first playthrough is the tutorial/learning phase and it ratchets things up on the two or three difficulties that unlock after. Did you have a chance to try those out (if they exist)? I know you said it was just one playthrough, but I hope it gets challenging later on.
I don't think there's truly a problem with the "verse structure" itself, it's just that the verses themselves are way too short compared to Bayonetta 1. This was one of the biggest issues of the sequel as well.
The levels are split into verses for the sake of the ranking system. Instead of just getting a score and rank at the very end of a stage, you get ranked on a bunch of individual battles which gives you clear short-term goals to work towards and makes it easy to see how you can improve and what parts of a stage you struggled with.
It also means you can relax a bit and take your time exploring between verses without worry that it will hurt your rank.
It's because you're supposed to replay it over and over again on harder difficulties. Go play bayo 2 on nonstop climax and come tell me you can quickly clear those verses. It's fucking nuts.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Not every game needs to be on power platforms. No, games won't be as visually spectacular on Switch. BUT. Not everyone WANTS games prioritizing power platforms tethered to the TV. Lord knows we have enough of those. In 5 years, 120 million ppl have voted with their wallets and said, "we want games designed for a hybrid system, EVEN IF that means it won't look as impressive". And this is a game for those ppl. You're free to enjoy it also if you want, but complaining a hybrid game didn't prioritize power platforms is about as pointless as someone complaining a game for power platforms wasn't designed ground up for a handheld. The industry is big enough for both. Don't get greedy thinking EVERY game has to target your preferences.

Versus are good actually, imagine trying not to get hit for 6 minutes straight only to get hit at the last minute, soul crushing. The battles being short are a mercy to the core fan base that will replay chapters to get those elusive platinum ranks.

I love this game overall but damn did they do Jeanne dirty. Both in terms of story and gameplay. No alternate costumes and you can't play as her in normal levels? The way they killed her off too. It seems like they did it just so Bayonetta would end up with Luka. That feels so forced. And why did they not give any sort of explanation how everything is somehow back to normal in the final scene?
Again, great game overall but I really feel like they flubbed the ending. Sorry for the rant.

Demon summons are required. The only way to stun an enemy to open them up for a torture attack is with a demon attack. I suppose you don't have to use torture attacks but why wouldn't you when it's a Bayonetta signature?
I love Jennifer Hale as a VA, she was awesome as Rivet. Her Bayonetta voice sounds so familiar to her performance as Ashe in Overwatch.

With so many IPs getting out of what now feels like arbitrary exclusivity deals, I'd love to see Bayonetta make its way to PC. The innuendos practically write themselves. Resolutions big enough to make a witch blush. Go at it harder and faster with unlocked framerates. An experience so enhanced, it'll feel like your first time.
Nintendo didn't pay for exclusivity. They funded the entire development cost. So it won't be multi-platform any time soon. So your only chance would be emulation most likely.
Id love for the new byo condoms to PC, but at the same time I respect Nintendo for picking up the IP to support platinum in finishing byo 2 and now supporting the releasing of 3 after year's of development, it's a true exclusive and not that timed nonsense we get now

Hard disagree about Verses. I think Bayonetta holds a unique place in modern games, where it wants to encourage replay value and have these trophies for playing the game beyond the bare minimum. Verses act both as a collectible, since so many are hidden in the environment and get you to see the environments to their fullest, and as a way to perfect your play. Even with small encounters, going for Perfect Platinum requires you to be aware of your combos and aware of their attacks.
I understand if you don’t care about replay value, since I also usually don’t. But even then, I think the smaller fights in the older games were still their own challenge. Since I liked at least trying to perform well.
This game looks like a LSD-cocaine fever dream at the best strip club and I am here for all of it

I don’t know man, Nier:Automata wasn’t constrained by hardware and the environments were just as lifeless and dull. I adore platinum, but environmental design just isn’t their strong suit and never has been.
