  • Homemade Peltier Refrigerator Air Cooler with thermostat! How to turn an ice chest into a fridge! no ice needed. easy DIY. super easy to make. full instructions in the video. unit cools fast and maintains set temperature range by use of a lighted LED thermostat. only 4 items needed: (all items bought on amazon). 1.) 5-quart cooler (coleman) 2.) 12v/6a peltier module, 3.) 12v thermostat and 4.) a 12v plug with cord. great for all kinds of uses and at only 6a(12v) or 72 watts, it easily runs thru a cars' 12v accessory or power port. want more storage? check out my previous video... "The 5 gallon bucket fridge".. link for that is posted below *along with the 4 links to the 4 products used in this video. wanna run either of them on house current? use a 12v ac/dc transformer as shown in the video. note that the 12v peltier module i used is rated to cool up to 10 liters - so it cools fast and holds in the cold temps. also note that the unit can be made without the thermostat but for only 5 dollars more it's definitely worth using. it will consistently monitor the internal temperature and will kick the unit on and off at any pre-set temps that you decide. if you like the project please rate, sub (click bell) and share...

    how many peltier chips do you think it would take to cool down a 119 qt cooler to 34-36 F? Have an idea for a DIY meat dry ager. Although Im thinking about using cooling blocks for the hot sides connected to an oil cooler filled with distilled water and a radiator coolant additive, which will then be submerged in freezing cold ice water for extra benefit (maybe overkill). But the goal is to maintain 34-36 degrees F at all times while meat ages for a few weeks. Insulating mods might also be considered for the inside of the cooler to prevent warming too fast, to help with efficiency of the system (less need to turn on and run)

      hi, this cooler is great for food and drinks but the radiator/fan air coolers i make would overpower it (meaning the ice-chest wouldn't keep up with the radiator/fan and the water would get warm.). those radiator/fan setups are great for cooling (and heating) air - but it would be an imbalance. those radiator/fan setups are very powerful so you need something stronger to keep the water cool. my best suggestion is to make a larger DIY evap cooler (i have one that i call the 'blue cube cooler'. those chill several gallons of water quickly (the water in the reservoir). you could use that water in the radiator/fan setup.

    Apologies for asking the following. My take is that this is a chiller and not a freezer? Can this idea be jacked up to keep meat frozen with camping for instance? • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi. that's correct, this is a fridge (not a freezer). peltier technology can't freeze things (including water into ice) in any usable way. that's because it only drops the air temp in the fridge a certain amount (based on ambient temp). 36F drop is basically the max. drop.

    • @nareshclark8916
      @nareshclark8916 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The purpose of this is for keeping game meat cold in hot conditions, in areas so remote that you cant readily access ice or anything. the plan would be to run two rows of 5 modules on the top lid, and two rows of 2 on each end, so that the whole cooler would stay at an even temperature. would this be enough, or would a container that size be too large to be cooled efficiently.

    How does the cooling system work,this is something new to me,how does it make cold air

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      hi. basically the way that these peltier chips work is that they pull (transfer) all the heat to one side of the peltier chip. it happens almost immediately. so you have one side that is very hot and one side where the heat is 'gone'. (lack of heat = cold). you use the heat sink on the hot side to pull the heat away from the chip (so the chip won't get ruined). then a fan cools the heat sink. on the cold side there is a smaller heat sink. that heat sink gets very cold because it's touching the cold side of the peltier. a smaller fan is attached to that heat sink and circulates air on, around and through it. (and that cools down the air). for a more in-depth explanation of thermoelectric cooling you might check wikipedia. here's a link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_cooling

      hi. 50 degrees is great! just a few degrees higher than mine but still really cold. I'd say try extra insulation (that can be as simple as wrapping the ice chest with a heavy towel or blanket). it may be only getting to 50F because the ambient temp in the room is a little warmer. these things drop the temp based on room air temp so maybe that is a factor. hi there. you must have missed it, because a big part of the video shows the internal temps. the peltier unit i used is sized to match the square footage of the cooler for max. cooling. the unit reaches comparable temps to a regular compressor based fridge. it cools food and beverages in about the same time too. (all three peltier fridge build (videos) that i've done are built with modules that can cool the space of the container. (they sell them with square footage ratings) so i matched the peltier 'module' with an appropriate size container. it's quite a bit tougher to figure out how to size them if you make it all from scratch.

    • @ur_quainmaster7901
      @ur_quainmaster7901 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These peltier units are more efficient at lower voltages, but I don't think running them in parallel will lower voltage. If that were true, running 3 amplifiers off of a distribution block would be at ~5 volts instead of ~14 in my truck.
      True about upgrading the hot side though.... but I bet replacing the single fan with a pair would be sufficient to see serious gains without taking the whole thing apart to swap heat sinks; It was only 20 degrees above ambient so not *too* much delta to work with. I'd also throw some foam in the hallow lid... an air pocket is a pretty good insulator, but it has been compromised by cutting a hole in it. Even the packing peanuts these components were shipped in would be better than nothing.

      @@ur_quainmaster7901 I have an "Icebox",(used a 10# block of ice to keep things cold),from a 1969 Shasta pull behind camper that I put two units on the back of it tied in parallel with radiator style heat sinks,(plus I changed out the larger fans to higher "CFM" units,server fans of the same size) and a 2 step controller,(turns both fans on and peltier [TC12708 units],then once the preset temp is hit the peltier fan and peltier unit are shut down and the large fans on the exterior run for 2 1/2 more minutes. In doing this it prevents heat migration from the large radiator style heatsink from going towards the interior of the "Icebox".
      Running them in parallel doesn't lower or affect the voltage,but instead the units share the amperage.
      Example: you have a solar cell running a LED,(solar yard light,cheap $1.50 one), and it will have a specific lumen output,but you put 2 of the same LEDs in parallel and they seem to have the exact same lumen output,in reality the lumen output is only slightly diminished because they are sharing the same amperage. I'm not very good in explaining the effect.
      I did upgrade the exterior insulation of the "Icebox" from a 1" spray foam sleeve to a 2" styrofoam enclosure on all 4 sides including the back of the unit,but at the point of the peltier units I cut the openings larger than the rear heat sink by 2" all around and at a 45° angle for good air flow.
      All testing as follows was done with an ambient temp of 75° F.
      During the startup the amperage is 5.87 amps with a voltage of +9,as the temp lowers to the preset of 36° F I see a drop in amperage used down to 3.71. The venting on the camper is a hallow section of the wall,(insulated), from the bottom of the camper,(coolest point,instead of a side wall vent 3 foot off the ground), and a rooftop exhaust point. Unit cycling time is once per 48.3 minutes unless the door is opened to obtain something cold. Recovery time is minimal at 7.4 minutes.
      I tried using just one unit but the lowest temperature achieved and maintained was 42.6° F which was the same result as using a 10# block of ice for cooling and the peltier unit running time was significantly increased.
      Hoping my set up will help you with your portable cooler?

    Hope I’m not becoming a bother but if you ever get a little spare time can you maybe do a video on how to put together a solar system in a box I looked at 30 videos in a matter of a few days all so complicated, you explain things in a way that we can understand. Maybe one day, I don’t know how to store my little system. And I would like to be able to move quickly with it for hurricane season

      hi there. check this out... it may help you. it's my video on how to set up a 'smaller' solar system. it makes it super easy to do - and runs all kinds of things for hours. it's not a lightweight system but it gives a super simple explanation of how to hook it all up. i'll consider making a video on how to put together an even smaller 'micro' system, but that will have to be in the future. here's the link to my video on setting up a system. th-cam.com/video/cgEvCLJuBkg/w-d-xo.html and here's a link to my video showing lots of things that it can run. th-cam.com/video/8LAjx_XAR90/w-d-xo.html

      hi. i'm not sure what you are running but for most things you do not need a pure sinewave inverter. many (if not most) of the non sinewave inverters that are sold produce what is called a modified sine wave.

      hi there. one idea is you could freeze the blocks in smaller containers and make several of them. if you want full size blocks you could buy a stand-alone chest freezer. those are only about $150 where i live. even the small ones (3.5 cu ft. ones) have plenty of room for big blocks and they are a lot cheaper than buying a new fridge (those are $600 minimum). if you don't want to buy the freezer then you can always buy the ice blocks (grocery stores and gas stations usually have them. only other thing i can think of is if a neighbor will let you "borrow" their freezer space
