My elderly mom grew up in the Appalachian mountains of WV in a large family, the youngest of 10 siblings. They had no refrigeration and they grew and canned everything and had a root celler dug into the bank of a hill for potatoes, onions, etc. She said my grandpa had 9 different gardens situated on the hillsides anywhere there was a flat spot you could plant some rows. And she said when he harvested his cabbages he would just dig a hole, line it with straw, and bury each of them deep in the dirt. Then through the fall and winter they would just go out and dig them up as needed. Just remove the big outer leaves and the inside would be fine. I garden because I absolutely love it, but back then they did it because they had no choice. They HAD to or they would starve. Great channel. Thanks.
I am always impressed with the ways folks got by without our modern amenities. There were 10 kids in my dad’s family, and while they had a small refrigerator, they relied on a lot of other methods to keep meat and produce through the winter. We could all learn a thing or two from folks like that!

It's so amazing what a difference a few hundred miles makes. Cabbage/kale/turnips grow down here in the Deep South in the winter months.
Yes it really is! Now granted, I'm pushing my season a bit, but still, I don't put out cabbages till early April here typically.

Very soon! I've actually set out a few here & there, but the big bulk of my plantings will go out this coming week. I actually didn't have the area for my indeterminate tomatoes totally ready to go yet, so I'm finishing that up now. Also- it's SO windy, I feel bad putting my transplants out right now!

Thanks Jenna, I'm doing this for the first time this year. So far they are doing great, but after seeing this I think I should give them some more food. Im in MA zone 6 and we have had a hot dry spring which has not been good for some of my spring veg.

That container has been SO handy to have around... I use it for everything. I got it from my local Ace Hardware store several years ago. Thanks for the idea! I'm currently growing Pusa Asita carrots in a 15 gallon grow bag. When I pull the carrots, I'm going to plant (Tiara) cabbage seeds. Maybe I can get 2 heads from the grow bag!
Oh- that's a great idea, Linda. I've actually got carrots in some grow tubs too, and I love the idea of following them up with more cabbage for the fall. I think you could get 2 Tiara in a 15 gallon.
I've never had success with cabbage. I will have to try this method.

I actually used the metal hoops that came out of this netting tunnel: www.gurneys.com/product/pest-netting-tunnel but I think hangers would work if you had an easy way to bend them into the shape you needed!
Thin and flexible pvc would probably work as well.

Thanks, Akhtar. My soil is slightly alkaline also, and I focus on adding organic matter (hay, grass clippings, leaf mulch etc), compost and aged manure into the soil to improve the fertility and tilth.
Hi everyone, I just wanted to share an idea I used for making a hoop system to cover one of my galvanized tubs that I am currently growing greens in. I went to Dollar tree and bought some hula hoops. I then cut them with a hacksaw to the desired length to fit over my tub. Then I took some chopsticks and put them inside the cut open end to act as a stake and then just pushed it into the soil. It works really great and is very stable. Now you can just cover it with plastic or netting, whatever you wish. Have fun gardening everyone!!!! 😊

I live in PA started my cabbage in doors thinking about putting it in the ground now we're supposed to be in the 30s that some night will be okay or do I need to cover with plastic or wait till it gets a little warmer
If they've been hardened off well they could withstand 30F. However, if you want to prevent undue stress on the seedlings, I'd still suggest covering them for the first couple below freezing nights they go through.
Good Info. What plans do you have when commercial fertilizer is no longer available?
Great question! Manure and compost will always be my first picks. But all of the fertilizers I currently use consist of things like bone & blood meal, fish meal, kelp meal, humic acids, earthworm castings and alfalfa meal- so if I have access to any of these ingredients I can make my own. If it gets to the point where I can't buy these components- some of them I can produce myself, and I can also use things like comfrey, fish (bury them whole in the planting hole), grass clippings (which I also already use extensively), composted/properly prepared things like coffee grounds and eggshells etc.

What are you using for the row cover hoops in your containers? I am trying cabbage in containers this "fall"
Those are actually just the wires I took out of an old netting tunnel I had (this one: www.gardensalive.com/product/pest-netting-tunnel?quickview=true) but you could easily take a section of medium gauge wire and bend it to fit, or some folks here suggested bending wire coat hangers for this purpose.

What would you recommend to improve native soil with 50% Silt, 45% Sand, and 5% Clay?
I've never had to deal with soil of that composition, but my gut tells me to focus on the addition of organic matter and look into biochar.
Help half of my purple cabbage started regrowing in my refrigerator so I took it out n planted it n a container it’s growing nice but I think it’s flowering not to sure but what to do next
If it's going to flower you can wait and collect seed, or just any leaves the plant has put on. Once a cabbage is at this stage I typically don't have a lot of luck pushing it into forming a head. Though you could try cutting the bolting stems back and see what happens.
What are the hoops you used in the container to put your netting over?

I'm wondering if this would work with napa cabbage as well? PS it already feels like summer in Ohio between last weekend and this weekend 🥵
It would! Napa cabbage are so gorgeous grown in a container they could double as an ornamental (well, at least I think they could).

Oh what great information I'm going to try this but this weekend here in N.Y sat. And sun in the 90s.
Questions: I planted my cabbage and broccoli after the last frost. It keeps on getting the nasty moth catapillers and no head of cabbage or broccol and i keep on snipping off the damage leaves. Should I call it a loss take them out of garden? Start fresh in the very late summer restart inside keep them under netting?

How many heads do you get from one plant? I know nothing about cabbage. Thanks.
One- though you will typically get a small amount of regrowth and ‘baby’ heads if you leave the plants after harvesting the main head.
So If i wanted to grow in containers for fall I would start my cabbage seeds indoors early July and transplant out in August?
That is the timing I would use, with my fall frost being mid-October.

@@carvertmmy I start direct sowing my carrots & beets in July, usually succession sowing them every 2 weeks or so from mid-July till late August or early September. But those later plantings are for overwintering- typically harvest in December or even early January under row cover.

You can!
Do you have any methods for helping prevent wild animals from eating it? Whenever I tried to grow cabbage or anything related they have always gotten eaten by rabbits. 😅
I find that the bunnies tend to leave my stuff in containers alone- but also, the insect netting I show at 07:17 works great to keep rabbits off your plants as well!

I got a kit. Working on my first batch. Puts out some juice I add as a fertilizer in the garden. Doesn’t smell either. We shall see.

Cabbage might well be the most underated if not despised plants we eat given it's cleansing effect on the human GI tract and it's effect on our natural emmission system. Which is utterly F'ing STUPID in my opinion given it's benefits. Your tail pipe does exactly what it is meant to eating it. The cancer fighting properties of cabbage are huge! Even better fermented for healthy gut flora. And my grandmother made THE BEST cabbage rolls ever in human existance past, present and future. Only a dedicated gardener would ever do this.....all for cabbages 😉....because in the "glute" of the season cabbages are about $2....each....and yes I do grow my own...I just can't believe all the cost and work that can go into this or any other vegetable....only to find out they are a dime a dozen at the store....but mine do taste better....that's for sure....hope the heat holds of but I don't think it will...
Crap at the store can't be trusted ... Keep buying that crap and put it in your body.
Oooh, but this 'Tiara' variety specifically is better than ANY cabbage I've ever purchased from a store or market!

@@freedinner886 yes that's true....my point is that it cost way more than $2 to produce that cabbage in the pot method or any other method...and only the true gardeners like Jenna and those like her that can do this....those who are putting in 100 acres of cabbages can't be and aren't this diligent.....I put in like 3 types of maybe 6 total....and I watch then and feed them and cover them....so I expect something in the end....if the weather doesn't cause an issue....
I grow cabbages in containers because I hate cabbages.. They are dead in a few days and then I grow something that tastes good!

I love your videos, but sad to say I think this will be too expensive for most people to grow a cabbage.
Thank you. I think it's almost always cheaper to grow 'in-ground', but it seems lots of folks like to experiment with growing in containers- a lot of times as a 'jumping-off' point. I just want to give them that option 😀.
What a great option since you can move the container around out of the hot afternoon sun. And since almost everyone has a problem with the white butterflies this way just cover the container with cheap netting like tulle or the laundry bags at the dollar store.
Yeah why do you recommend such a big pot is it to try to discourage people from growing or make it to expensive for them to even attempt to because when they go to buy the supplies it's way over the price to just buy cabbage instead. Really want to know if you know that you only need a Three gallon pot at most?
@@GrowfullywithJenna yes I get that, and now I've thought about it a bit more I suppose we could always use old compost mixed with new, plus feed. I do think container growing has a big place in growing our own food, especially if we have spare plants. I'd rather have another cabbage than throw the plant away🙂
