I have given up on heading Brassicas. Plant them early, they bolt in the Indian summer, plant them late and you catch the FREEZE that comes once or twice a year. BUT I AM HAPPY FOR YOU

A shade cloth or a diy green house with plastic wrap is really good at helping keep them alive. But I totally get where you are coming from. I have deer that sleep in my backyard and I swear they love killing whatever I'm most excited for
Another reason to grow more than one variety (of anything) is that I've noticed that pests usually prefer one variety over another, so I consider one of them to be sacrificial.

Years ago, I watched a program where the gardener harvested a head of cabbage by just cutting below the head, leaving the rest of the plant intact. This was done because multiple, smaller heads of cabbage will form. Have you tried or experienced this technique?
I know you are not asking me but I found that interesting. I harvest my broccoli and cauliflower that way and always let them continue to put off the smaller heads. I never thought of even trying it with cabbage.

I grew my first cabbages last year. I only harvested the heads and left the plants which gave me baby cabbages in size similar to Brussel sprouts. Each plant grew five or more of these side shoots.
Wow didn't know that was possible. I always dig from the roots ,like Kevin said you should try different varieties, the one that I grew for the past two seasons didn't produce too much, I need to try a different kind and start them on time
I am lucky enough to be in a cabbage farming area during our growing season and can go to one of several farmers markets to get fresh from the field. Really helps with my garden space for other things. NE Florida area Zone 8/9.

I agree with everything you said. In my zone 4 garden, slugs can be a problem but I use Safers Slug Bait (iron phosphate). I usually only have to put it out 2 or 3 times a season and that does the trick. Although my broccoli gets cabbage worms, my cabbage rarely does. I guess they are all eating my broccoli.
Get bt spray. Get the undiluted type WITHOUT a built in sprayer. So you have to mix it yourself. The one i use is Monterey B.T theres also one thats called thuricide and its a red label but i havent used that one

Wide spacing is only necessary if your aim is to grow the largest single heads of cabbage rather than the most cabbage by overall harvest. If you want more cabbage overall, you can sacrifice an inch or so for each head, but you get twice as many heads of cabbage.
I love planting them in Fiji Winter. Great crop with larger heads. I use Taki Seeds, which give huge heads. Weeding is important for larger heads. Takes about 60 to 70 days for larger varieties. Spray Thrive Veggie and Herb or Karyon Soil booster. Karyon is a good organic liquid fertilizer.
I'm trying some brassicas about to plant them soon, but I think I'm already too late. 9b is not cabbage friendly, lol. Coastal frens probably have way more luck.
Try growing 'Glomer Stonehead' cabbage. Great for coleslaw, sauerkraut and pickled cabbage. They grow really dense tight heads, very hard for pest's like slugs and woodlice to destroy.😊

Several questions... How deep are the roots? I'm thinking the best option for me is putting them in a 24" round wash tub that I can drag around the corner of the house when the partial shade time comes. That would also give it all of the space that it wants. I would guess it probably holds about 12" of dirt. Second, what's the temperature range for planting? Does it need to be above 50f when they are small? Will they tolerate a mild freeze? I'm in Atlanta, 8a/b. The time in which I can guarantee that it will be above 50f and not shoot up to 85 or 90 is not all that long. Or maybe they don't mind the 80s?
I've had fantastic luck with mustard and rapini broccolis, but none with cabbages that form heads. Every single time the aphids massacre them :( Watering isn't a problem for me as they are all in containers. I wonder if moving them to the front with more sun would help.

Just cut the head out then use those big,green fan leaves for green wraps around corned beef,sausage,burritto. Theyre more flavorful, almost like kale or turnip greens.

The envelope says harvest is suppise to be 65-70 days after germination. Obviously that's not going to happen. What stops heads from forming? I fertilized with a balance fertilizer when I planted the seeds, and again after 2 weeks old, the after 2 months I fertilized with high nitrogen blood meal. Moisture level is good too. I've covered them when we had a frost & uncovered in the mornings. What am i doing wrong?
You want bigger plants? Use filtered well water. Be barefoot in the garden, connect with earth. Use only copper tools. And long copper rods in the ground, the part left above soil make a spiral shape. Use the planets energy and electro garden
Trying to regrow cabbage from leftover stem but the stem keeps rotting away with no roots produced. There are a few leaves that come out but die with the stem. Am I missing something?

Yes, and they also have a high nutrient density, so it's a good idea to not throw them out. The leaves of all brassica crops are edible, and I never throw them out.
The most problem I have had is that when they are small and growing, I keep having insect problems out of nowhere and ravage overnight almost. Even when delaying time to sow, they come no matter what. Have tried insecticide, but somehow it seems not too effective.
Have you tried insect netting? It’s the best way to keep the White Cabbage moth away. They lay eggs on brassicas. The eggs hatch into little green caterpillars and then BAM, brassicas get decimated by them. Besides using sprays this is the main mode of protection from them. Look up ideas on how to cover them. It’s easy.

I did that with Swiss chard - intending to let the roots just decay in the bed. Darn thing wouldn't die... kept producing more leaves!

I hate slugs with every fiber in my being, they are my true all around nemesis in the garden.

I normally let 2 or 3 of my 12 seed for the bees and to adapt to the area.
I have 5 different kinds and I do the same with all.
Mine just won’t form a head. The weather keeps going from 80 to 50 here!!
Mine do the same, but they do finally form. I cram a ton into one container so they stay small too. ❤

Never skip a neem+essential oils spraying. Brassica Moths are prolific and I don't need that protein.

Have you tried planting calendula nearby as a trap crop? Aphids are obsessed with calendula and might invade that instead of your cabbage!
Also, cover the containers with tulle material. Light, water and air gethrough but nearly zero pests.

Cultivar suggestions for a short growing window? In the Texas High Plains it goes from Winter to HOT AF pretty quickly.

some varieties are easier to grow than others. I found that the mini variety was more successful for my garden.

Sounds like cabbage is NOT a good candidate for container growing, like grow bags, would need 1 cabbage per bag.
