Went to a RED V-Raptor X event in Toronto shortly after the Nikon purchase and the rep there said that previously, RED had only 1 guy working on AF, but since the purchase, he's been able to collaborate with the entire Nikon AF team. At the time, he said they were in the process of mapping the Komodo, KX and Raptor sensors to give them all Nikon equivalent AF. He didn't know when it'd be completed, but that was the plan.
Finally, a real video showing the actual use of the KX. All the fanboys only show the colors. What people really find when they get a product are the limitations that impact the workflow that they need. If you were only a camera operator, autofocus is a small deal. But if you want to use it to create your own content, it is nearly useless. I have to stick with Sony for now, but I am excited to see where Red goes under Nikon. I have high hopes because I LOVE Nikon. Great video! Seriously, so much commentary, and it is great to see the real world!
I've been using the original RED Komodo for four years now, and honestly, autofocus wasn't why I bought it. I got it for the compact size, the colors, the codec, and the incredible image quality. What I didn’t expect was how useful the phone app would be-someone can live track the image and focus box, basically acting like a digital 1st AC. It’s saved me a ton on hiring a 1st AC, and I don’t even need to mess with focus motors. Works perfectly on gimbals too, no issues at all.
All that money spent, and ya gotta use a phone for a few extra lines of firmware code that simply could have been added in a few hours. And that is being kind.
@@DreamReleases you don’t buy a cinema camera for AF, but is a nice add on, and sometimes the code is proprietary or requieres brand collaboration, in this case from Canon that don’t even want third parties creating lenses for RF
It’s like you said though. Most people who buy a RED don’t care about autofocus because it’s not a wedding or sports camera. It’s a cinema camera. It’s in the title. Cinema cameras don’t use autofocus. I know you covered that but I just felt like it needed reiterating. Also, it seems as if RED inherited the unreliable video autofocus from Nikon lol
If I had to go with KX, the best option is to take the discount/savings and then get DJI LiDAR with the savings and a kit of any Cine lens you want. NDs are an acceptable expense.
@@Citizenflaba Yes, retaining the highest resolution while using stabilization because i'm not using a gimbal while shooting a wedding with two body cameras
I’ve never been impressed with the AF on the dsmc3 lineup. More of a party trick “hey look heresAF ON A RED 😂” I heard it was just one dude working part time on autofocus, so that is impressive that it is as good as it is-props to that dude if that’s true. I don’t expect AF to get any better until they transition to z-mount, but I’d love to be wrong haha.
I’ve said it many times I’ll say it again, the performance of EF lenses have outshined Canon’s native RF lenses. I swapped all of my L lenses for Sigma Arts. Once I updated them through the dock they have for me, performed much better. That being said this video is agree with.
If your buying RED and concerned about autofocus performance its probably not the right system for you, and to be honest DJI lidar has solved all single operators AF requirements and is transferable to every lens you own.
for solo shooters this a no go. ill take average image quality with great autofocus over great image quality with no autofocus.. it really depends on what you do
yeah, that's worst than Panasonic use to be..Having said that, I really think that Panasonic S1H Mark II is about to disrupt the cinema market...Also we're waiting for the Komodo X and C80 or C400 comparison. We got your initial comment but we want the hands on, side by side review...Reach out to canon, let them know your fanbase is waiting...
I love the image quality of the Red OG and KX. I sold my OG and went with a C70 because of the Autofocus and ND’s . More the Autofocus than the ND’s. Even with the price drop I would rather spend on Canon C80 or C400 as they are great autofocus, low light and build in ND’s. For internet content one cannot tell the difference most of the time on which camera was used. Maybe Nikon will be their autofocus in the red once they switch over the Nikon Glass. I doubt the current Komodo’s will get any more software update with canon glass. I would buy a KX tomorrow if the autofocus was reliable but that is not going to happen which is a deal breaker for me. Brandon you have been raving about how the Red is the best so I am surprised that Autofocus would be a think for you.
3:20 - I suggest having your AF settings at Mode: Continuoius Size: Wide, Position-Custom, Fact Detection on - Face Priority - Closest Found, No Face Found - Continuos AF***... I've never tried "revert back to focus box" - maybe that mode is the worst... the other mode that works is just the largest focus box w/o face detection turned on.
BW - Why did you set it to Pause Focus when there's NO Face found? I wish you would of set up a session with me beforehand. The better option would be have it default to Continue AF and this works a lot better. It's not perfect, but it doesn't stop and start like you're showing here. Let's not forget this KX is a 16 Bit RAW Global Shutter IMAX quality camera that's all-in for less than $10K. If you're a true Pro, AF should not be your deciding factor as to whether or not a cinema camera is worth it. I also want to know what F Stop you are shooting at. FYI - I try to keep our RED AF as close to F2.8 to F4 as I can. Once you stop down too much (like F5.6 or higher), you'll notice the results fall off. I hope this helps!
At 2:35 what do you mean there is not touch auto focus ? There is touch auto focus using the portkeys bm5wriii and the small hd with red control . Does the new red Komodo x $2700 monitor have touch auto focus ?
In the tech world we call this remote AF via a smartphone a "work around" for the lack of in camera AF control. A few lines of code. There was no hardware added to the smartphone. Lines of code that could have been added to the camera firmware.
I'm sure when they use Nikon lenses on future cameras, you'll have something. I don't see Canon sharing the RF tech. That AF is awful. It's a multi-person camera right now. I think Lidar is kinda rough too.
Man if Nikon improved the AF to Nikon Mirrorless type system, it could persuade someone like me who is on the edge with C80/C400. I sold my Komodo OG as it was difficult to use as a solo users shooting fast moving objects in Music videos. If Nikon was committed to improving this I may hold on the C80/C400 as I do like the Red image quality and small form factor.
Im sure we soon will see that Nikon takes over everything but the outside of that box.. and that will mean autofucus, Z-mount option and focus on low light like all the other camera companys do now.a little sad, but maybe a good thing in the end. And its such a great camera, even before the pricedrop.
Isn't Nikon the big factor? They have a top professional stills AF system that they've developed over decades, and they've been working on it for video for years. The main thing that made sense about the purchase was for Nikon to put their AF into Red cameras. I guess it's too soon, but my first thought was that the Komodo price cut was to clear stock to bring in a Komodo level body with Nikon AF.
All those work arounds for something that the peeps over there in Foothill Ranch California could have copied and pasted during their lunch break. Whatever group worked on the platform body obviously isn't the same people that worked on the phone app. Hey no need to add autofocus they can use their iphone. What kind of sht is that, one has to use their phone to AF if need be? Wrong camera for that sht

at this moment autofucus and internal nd filters is the game in the cinema cameras, canon is winning
And Sony, FX6 does both well.

Autofocus on RED is usable only for interview/talking head scenarios.

Yea I think that’s Nikon’s plan. Maybe on the next version but if they can do a firmware update to improve it’s going to be a good thing for red.

No true cinema camera has internal nd and auto focus :) my KX lives on manual af
single AF is not that accurate either. sticking to manual focus for now.
