Episode Notes:
1. All games captured using MAME.
2. I have seen the CPS labeled as both the Power System and Play System for years. I prefer the Power System.
3. The CPS Changer wasn't really a console at all. It was full arcade boards sold in a housing that was similar to the CPS Dash. The actual CPS Changer itself was essentially just a Supergun that connected to these full-sized boards and supported SNES controllers and connections to a TV and power source.
4. Look for most of these in modern collections. Just search Capcom using your favorite service.
5. Many of these were ported home in the 90s. They were rarely ever arcade perfect, even on the Saturn and Playstation.
This era of Capcom is just magic. Some of those arcades are the reason I'm still playing videogames today. Love your videos, keep it up!
CPS1&2 forever 👍👍
Indeed. She's a fine woman.
Your damn right!
@@brianbabin6333I'm glad they didn't, though. I'd hate to see a world where Capcom's best games were limited to one console; there aren't enough Shinji Mikami's in the world to decapitate.
@@TenchigumiI’ll never forget when he said that’s what he’d do if Resident Evil was ported to the PS2. It’s great to see another person that remembers that so well 😳
A half of my childhood's true arcade classics were made on CPS, and my personal Top 5 features Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, King of Dragons, The Punisher, Three Wonders and Saturday Night Slam Masters.
Isao Abe was the brilliant composer for many of these soundtracks. Love his jams.
The CPS Trilogy and The King of Dragons push my nostalgia buttons for innovative hack and slash gaming. The era of Street Fighter 2 was a true renaissance for fighting games. Reflecting on these titles isn't just a trip down memory lane for me, but an homage to a transformative period filled with camaraderie and joy in gaming. Great vid as usual!
What a fun video. I spent so many quarters on Final Fight. Cadillacs and Dinosaurs have a badass OST.
You'll have to do the CPS2 soon! This was a great episode.
3 WONDERS, mercs, mega twins, captain commando and carrier wing was my favourite
Final Fight, Captain Commando and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs were HUGELY popular here in Brazil*, always on bootleg cabinets. You could easily find one of them on street corners in most cities.
By the time Punisher came along, Capcom had an official distributor in Brazil (Rockstar) and the original Blue cabinets started to appear. They were more expensive, though, and not as easy to find. But even still, even a seedy bar near my home had two by the entrance, running CPS-2 games.
(* Of course, Street Fighter II also was. But that's a whole other story by itself)
This channel has quickly become one of my favorites. Grew up around the same time and can relate to similar experiences with games at those ages.
Same reason I enjoy this channel. I grew up around the same time as him, so I relate to his experiences.
i am 14 yrs old and this is my favorite channel
Nick Fury also appeared in Marvel’s The Avengers alongside Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Black Widow.
Kingpin made his debut in Spider-Man: The Animated Series as the 2nd archenemy of Spider-Man (who is also known for being the Sinister Six).
Indeed I think Capcom Arcade Stadium covers most (if not all, certainly stuff based on external IPs didn't make the cut) of these titles, so definitely the best way -- at least legally -- to own all these games! Definitely several of these games would land in various spots on my all time favorite arcade games list!! SF2, Captain Commando, Knights of the Round just to name a few. (except quiz and dragons, who the heck would even know half of these questions? thank goodness for the Quiz and Capcom update in Capcom Classics Collection vol. 2!!)
forgotten worlds was a blast to play as a kid and I'm sure it holds up now.
The greatest arcade board ever made. I love the CPS.
I remember seeing Final Fight in the arcade for the first time. I was in awe of the graphics and the OST. The only time it happen again to me with a 2D game was with Samurai Shodown.
I actually did play Mega Man The Power Battles at the CNE last year when they had their Gaming section. It was a blast!
Great reviews! As much as CPS2 was an improvement, I have so many fond memories of CPS1! Fun fact: Capcom released Megaman Power Battle on both CPS1 & 2! In the US, the CPS2 version never made it past location testing, but in Japan, SA, and I think Asia, it got a proper release. I managed to aquire one of the few US test boards years ago.
IIRC having Megaman on both boards was pivotal for cracking the emulation of CPS2
I have said this for years that I have been watching you, but I don't know how you consistently pump out videos this long, with this much information, this much recorded gameplay, and do it as often as you do without getting burned out, bored, or running out of time. Kudos bro. But remember to take some breaks every once in a while and don't burn yourself out. As a digital artist who tries to post to my Patreon every day, I can't imagine how you have the time to do this stuff. lol
Yes, the CPS board was not one but a series of boards individually for each game. It wasn’t until the CPS2 that the boards became modular
A now-defunct pizza place in St. Louis had several random arcade cabinets; one of them was Three Wonders (the others were Asteroids and a Neo Geo). They were on free-play, too. :D
Awesome video! This was such an amazing time, Capcom just was killing it back then. I still remember walking around in a mall arcade in the early 90s as a young kid completely oblivious that just one company had made almost all of the games in there that everyone was playing.
this are the kind of videos i watch on repeat while working, you make my day bearable Sega Lord X, you are leaving a great legacy behind with this videos.
I remember playing final fight for the first time absolutely loved it
I was going to arcades in the mid to late 80s and I can tell you final fight was everywhere when it came out.
I always played it when i saw it because the SNES version was one player and missing guy.
Womp womp
Often said that Knights of the Round remains my favorite Capcom game, whether it was in the arcade or on the SNES I played it religiously. Still do to a degree, often playing as Lancelot.
Lancelot is easily the best character though Arthur isn't bad. I've always found the game to be more challenging with Perceval due to his short reach and poor jump.
I remember the arcade always having the best looking and animated games as a kid. Super Nintendo and Genesis were great but there was nothing like those big sprites at the arcade. I think I just about soiled myself when I saw Xmen vs Street Fighter at the local roller rink. Die Hard Arcade and House of the Dead were other standouts for me. Thanks for sharing!
For quality 2D games, arcade was always king during the 8 and 16-bit era. 32-bit to 7th gen gave his near arcade perfect arcade games.
Have a bunch of CPS 1 & 2 games on my modded 3DS. Such a fun time for arcade games.
I love Capcom especially Street Fighter II ,Street Fighter Alpha series, and Resident Evil 1, RE 2, and RE 3 (PS1)
Mayor Haggar is still my favorite beat em up fighter of all time 💪
Awesome vid, love those final words too. I also have my old consoles on in demo mode playing in the background while doing other things. It really is a window to the past that can never be replaced. We really had the greatest era of gaming growing up.
I played through Magic Sword on the Capcom Arcade Stadium on the Switch, it's fun as hell. Thanks for another informative video!
By the way, Bass's name is pronounced "base", as in "bass boost". Great video! So many games for the system that I never knew existed.
I was going to comment the same thing. His dog is named Treble, just further going with the music-themed character names
yeah but unless you’re into mega man like that you wouldn’t know that because it’s spelled bass like the fish. You are correct though
@@stevesteve0521 Or like Bass as in Bass Guitar.
It's pronounced "for-tay" but crapcom couldn't properly localize a game if their lives depended on it.
A lot of gems in this video. Capcom had a reputation early on for fun games, great graphics, awesome soundtracks and providing a challenging experience.
Would have definitely to see a bunch of these games receive home ports.
Even blindfolded, a seasoned player would know that a game came from Capcom as soon as that unique music started up.
Sad post arcade generations will never understand the magic that was walking into the arcade and seeing games like this at the time.
Between you and game sack takes me back. Love it.
Capcom was SO GOOD back then. Their games were home runs.
And their music too!
Arguably the best 3rd party developer of the late 80s and 90s. Some people would say Konami, square or namco with midway, rareware and EA getting a few mentions as well but I’m giving it to Capcom
The King of Dragons is one of my absolute favorites of all time! I dropped many coins into that machine as a teenager at the time. Me and a friend were the only two people in our city to beat the game on a single coin and we competed against each other to see who would set the record for the day. Sometimes I would set the record in the morning and it would stand for the entire day. Then my friend would play late in the afternoon and take my record down. I would do the same in return the next day. It was awesome fun. At some point we figured that if we didn't grab the weapons updates at the end of the stages and stuck with the crappiest possible weapons all the way to the end of the game, that means the enemies would need to be hit way more times and that translated into A LOT more points at the end! So we finished it on a single coin and with the crappiest weapons for maximum gains :) But of course, this game is not nearly as hard as Final Fight for example. It wasn't the hardest to beat. Nowadays when I play it in MAME, I need at least half a dozen coins to finish it, since my brain is not as fresh. Still a ton of fun though, all those years later!
You know you have to make a CPS2 and CPS3 video now. I wish I could get Sega Model 2 and Model 3 games to work on Raspberry Pi I miss some of those titles.
I vividly remember being in a Put Put Golf arcade and seeing Final Fight for the first time. It absolutely blew everything away I knew about video games.
I had a bunch of FF's in my area in the early 90's which are now all gone, and one location was a movie theater that opened in 1989 near me an AMC but they have no arcade games now, and the other place a hot dog place in the shopping center by the movie theater near me which is now a Kumon learning center, the Final Fight was in the back right of the hod dog place in the 90's. I saw an article in a game magazine in 1990 about the upcoming Super Famicom in Japan which was released Nov 1990 and there was an article on the Super Famicom Final Fight which originally had the Industrial Area on the map, but appeared to to be a one player and only Cody and Haggar. When I saw the arcade for the first time I thought it was one of the best arcade games besides the original TMNT by Konami at the time. But, when the SNES FF came out, I got the SNES and FF as a gift from my late mom Dec 25, 1991 who passed last June 14, 2022 in the hospital because her lungs were weak, and I played FF I was disappointed. I took our new SNES down to my aunt and uncle's house (my mom's only sister) they lived 45 miles away from me and they have a son and daughter and my male cousin played Super Mario World, FF and Sim City on SNES and they had an NES with Mario Bros. 3 in another room. My uncle passed away March 31 to strokes.
Takes me way back when i had the reflexes to play those games lol.
This episode put a smile on my face, ironically i finished 2 Capcom games not too long ago (Dead Rising 2: Case West and Exoprimal) but i also finished Strider today (again).
And now you´ve uploaded a episode about Capcom.
The coincidence about this video, is just too good.
Fantastic video again Mr X. Love the CPS board, i fondly remember seeing final fight for the first time and it blew me away as a kid.
Yes new Sega lord X .🤘😆🤘
Why u spell it like saygaylorg >;[
@@cepopeye what what a weird ass thing to say that's f..ked up

Steven Segal lord x does rock 😂
@@cepopeye by the way you typed gaylorg dumbass aghhhhh Haha ha.🤘😆🤘 stay cool
Awesome retrospective, as always, LordX! Your closing statement pretty much summed up my childhood too. We are so lucky we got to experience something as awesome and unique as this time was. 👍👍
This fellas vids are top notch quality
The CPS1 board basically defined my childhood. I recall the first time I saw Final Fight and SF2… man… it was a major point in gaming history and I’m so glad I was there for it.
I always found it funny they renamed Area 88 to UN Squadron. If you read the manga/saw the OVA you’d know area 88 was the furthest thing from being UN friendly 🤣
This was 🔥! I'm learning about about new games and old games that I had forgotten about! Thanks SLX! We appreciate the info!
Thanks for the post love your videos about old games 😀😀
Glad you like them!
@@SegaLordXNp 😊😊
Arcade nostalgia from SLX and Game Sack on the same day. I'm in heaven! Now to go play some of these on my Steam Deck.
I loved Forgotten Worlds. In my mind they made a couple more, but i guess they are just different versions!
Still, if they ever brought it back, I wouldn't mind
There was a lot of similar games. SCAT, Abadox and Burai Fighter on the NES alone. Inthink there's other similar games too.
@@Gatorade69 Sidearms for example. Burai Fighter is mad underrated imo
forgotten worlds was a great game
@@richardburton4625 yeah great game indeed
On twin sticks now it would be great
One of the most legendary arcade boards ever.
Have not hit the like button so fast, keep up the great work SegaLordX.
Thanks, will do!
The games I've played the most were 1941: Counter Attack, Captain Commando and MERCS. But especially Captain Commando. It's one of my favourite games of all time and one of my favourite CAPCOM games EVER.
The Punisher, i had so much fun playing that game.
Imagine if this had been consolized for the home market, like the Neo Geo
Didn’t they? I remember reading it was mail order only and had a Super Nintendo controller port
It was. ----> 35:33
I have seen a capcom fighting stick with games.
Fantastic video yet again. What a throwback... and your conclusion was perfectly on point, wheat magical times these were :)
Another great episode! I’d love to see a video about the Capcom CPS game changer. Def a holy grail of mine. Thanks. Keep up the great work.
If it wasn't for the CPS Changer, SFZ having unencrypted keys, we may have never decrypted the keys and the games lost to the cps suicide battery dying. It's great to see all of these games preserved 30 years later.
I’m glad I now own a lot of these on various collections
Great Content . You deserve a lot more subs
UN Squadron was called Area 88 in Japan and was based on a well known manga series about a mercenary air force. Many of the game mechanics such as players buying weapons from a dealer shop between levels make a lot more sense in the original game where the characters are soldiers of fortune than then do in the western localized version where they are supposed to be regular military. The name was changed in the west for licensing reasons. If you wondered why the title screen has that weird unicorn logo, it's the roundel Shin uses on his aircraft in the manga. In the western version it just seems kind of weird and out of place but it totally makes sense in the Japanese version.
I remember playing some of these games, on MAME. In fact, I played some of them when I was in college, back at fall of 2000-2002. They were pretty good, for the era they were released in. I would like to see more coverage of games running on specific arcade hardwares, like the SEGA arcade games that use specific hardware as well as CPS2 and CPS3.
I absolutely love my Darksoft CPS1, CPS2 and CPS3 multi kits. Expensive but worth every penny. Best way to play
I lived near a Nickel City arcade, owned by Capcom in the 90s, which meant the arcade was crammed with as many Capcom games as you could fit in that building. You paid like $1.50 for admission, and the old CPS1 games were free-to-play, I was able to play most of these games before the advent of PC emulation. Thanks for the nostalgia trip
Gotta thank the hilarious Street Fighter 2: Rainbow Edition bootleg for giving Capcom the idea to make Hyper Fighting after seeing how increasing the speed made the game even more fun
I gotta say it was great how close Genesis ports came to arcade originals on this hardware.
Big fan of CPS games...there was just something about that art style that just clicked with me as someone who draws and paints a lot. Plus I alway's loved Sega's Megadrive take on their games even though they could never quite capture the meatiness of the originals.
Street Fighter 2, Final Fight etc, that cps board is legend.👍😄
Being small at that time, and seeing those games in the arcade, especially the cps games, was a real blast.👍😄
35 years of console collecting and I had no idea Merc's was a direct sequel to Commando...nice!
Los mejores años de mi vida en los arcades en España
Some of mine, as well.
The Capcom Beat-Em-All from the CPS1 and CPS2 were truly something special. We also have awesome games in the genre now, but there was something unique about the look and feel of the Capcom Classic.
Played Final Fight in the arcades with my sister and brother as kids. Still fun to play to this day. Street Fighter 2 was just insane when we saw a group of people hanging around. We wanted to see what they were playing but couldn't because of the massive people around it but all we heard was, "hadoken" and people cheering or yelling.😂 I remember when they had it on a huge screen in a pizza parlor and I was pretty much in awe when I saw it.
Good ol days, majority of pizza places always had street fighterb2 series.
Lovely video!!!🔥🫡💪🏾💯
18:22 Midnight wanderers was something special in the arcade in 91. I played it while waiting for street fighting in the game room 😂 iirc Chariot is the sequel. That’s what they were looking for in Midnight Wanderers
One of these days I'll have to play U.N Squadron, always wanted that one since it first came out.
Very beautiful video, discoverd 1-2 games that i didn´t know. I am always jealous of American and Japanese arcades. In Germany there was no, only a mixture of slot casino/arcade that could only be entered from the age of 18. Like video rental stores, too. There were a few exceptions, but they were really rare. Which is also clear, if you do 70-80% of sales with XXX or slots. The gambling addiction and youth protection law at the time were really bad, for me (Or not? money that I did not put in arcades, went directly to Mega Drive games ^^)
I can count a hand how often I gambled arcade video machines in my youth. Only on vacation in Spain (where my brother almost killed me with an Outrun machine), France or Australia (Sega World was so awesome...) and on the annual fun fair. For which I had saved my pocket money to play Shinobi, Mercs and all the other cool games.
3-4 years after I was finally 18 and was able to get into a arcade, that was at the time when Daytona, Ridge Racer appeared, 95% of all arcades kicked out the video games and are on pure casino. Without emulation, I would never have seen a large part of the exclusive arcade games. Neo-Geo i only discoverd, because i buyed an used around 94/95
great video brought back so much good memories but you forgot a hidden gem! the third installment of muscle bomber, know as muscle bomber - the body explosion. its a really good game too!
Man lot of memories in the arcade with Capcom's CPS system hardware and the game that shocked me of all was the old mighty Final Fight I mean when I saw that game in the arcade I was in awe with the graphics and music specially The Bay area level. The other to games that makes it impact in my childhood were Strider, Captian Commando, Magic Sword, Knights of the round, UN Squadron which is known as Area 88 based on the Japanese manga and of course the mighty Street fighter 2 more specific the Champion Edition version. Capcom definitely was on fire and roar in 80's and 90's in the arcades.
Great video! I would have loved to see the CPS version of the first entry in the Street Fighter Zero series covered as well… however it is not exclusive to the platform, as it’s also been released on CPS2…
Man the memories... I was OBSESSED with Final Fight
I prefer Konami beat em up because they weren't timed limited (they used something else to force the player to move forward - like dropping bomb in X-men or spamming bad guys in Vendetta)
Also Konami's characters look more well-proportioned.
Capcom had this slim/tall physique look for their characters, with some really weird contortion poses going on.
Capcom, however, nailed that satisfying feeling of solidly hitting the baddies. In some of Konami's games, it feels like you are hitting air.
Lots of great memories with CPS games. Thanks for putting this video together.
I appreciate ways getting to see some games in your videos I have not seen in action before! Quality content to help setup emu consoles :)
Awesome find that Craig, massive bonus if they work but at least you have the skills to fix them
My eyes lit up when you unwrapped a Raiden, love that game, the arcade vab would be amazing. Top stuff and hood luck testing them 👍✌️
Your videos are always just the best. Your commentary, information, everything is always spot on.
hello lord sega lord x, thank you for this video!
My pleasure!
Another fantastic video from you. I enjoyed watching it although the ads from TH-cam that pop up every 6 minutes into the video are very annoying. TH-cam's algorithm for ads is really bad now, used to be able to buffer the player forward in the certain spots where the ads would pop up to trigger them and then scroll back to the start of the video and watch it all the way through without any interruptions but can't do that now.
Wow commando and ghosts and Goblins ! The memories are flooding back thanks 😁👌
Regarding Magic Sword….
“Evacuate me!”
“Get me escape!”
“Take me out!”
How many goated games will you release over the years?
Capcom: Yes
💙💛💙
Mate there are games i had forgotten about and will be re-downloading them all for mame. Bloody legendary games, the best was the 80's and 90's for games.
Dynasty Wars was the first spacie I ever played. Had to stand on tippy toes to see the screen!
This collection was my favorite of that era. Capcom at its peak definitely.
The Child Protective Service board is one of my favorite of arcade boards.
Love their CPS and their games, kudos for these guys making an absolute golden arcade games
Great video and I hope there will be a sequel for CPS2 and 3 games!
its strange how early cps1 games made like no use of the pcm sound channels. mercs and king of dragons were all Absolutly banging. and capcom did one hell of a job on king of dragons for snes. And when you consider all of them, it is quite amazing how complex the sf2 soundtrack really was.
You ever gonna do a sega naomi overview one day? id love to your thoughts on it since the dreamcast had parts of the naomi's hardware on it. i think it be something good to go over.
NAOMI is a huge episode. Gonna be awhile before I get there.
CPS2 followup please! Great video, enjoyed hearing your thoughts on Capcom's arcade heyday.
SLX, you’re awesome. Thanks for showing me the greatness of 16 and 32 bit systems!
Thats it. I'm building a multi CPS arcade cab. Such great games!
Street fighter II: the world warrior will always have a special place in my heart
I remember playing for the first time in 1991, it was at a pizza place and had no idea who to pick so I selected Blanka since he seemed like a tough one who can make some damage. I was 9 years old and never seen so many Buttons for a game before but that just boosted my curiosity to try and play. I got my ass handed to me against the computer but I tried again and again.
Just love the cps platform games. I got all 3 platform sets entirely on steam deck. Those games never get old and still wish every day they did a vs series on cps3.
Another amazing video. You sure do love video games from the 80s-90s era!
