    Episode Notes:
    1. I used mostly MAME for this capture.
    2. Fantasy Zone II DX The Tears of Opa Opa was released as a stand alone cab in Japan.
    3. The System 16 hit the arcade nearly 3 years before Capcom's CPS and nearly 5 years before the Neo Geo.
    4. I often wonder what the Genesis would have been like had its VDP been more like the System 16. That sprite scaling could have made a world of difference.
    5. There were more System 16 titles than I covered here. More sports, puzzle, and Japanese-centric material.
    6. Most of System 18 games are 3 and 4 player co-op.
    7. Most System 18 games still have no modern console versions.
    8. Laser Ghost had an energy gun that put you in mind of the Ghostbusters proton glider. I'm surprised Sega didn't get sued.
    9. Despite being nothing like the arcade, Outrunners on the Genesis actually has a decent soundtrack. I use it here in the closing segment.
    10. Outrunners is one of my favorite racing games ever. I first saw it at a summer camping retreat when I was 18. I dumped many credits into it that weekend.
    11. I mentioned multiplayer numerous times during the System 32 segment because most of these games had it and the entire balance of the gameplay was designed around it. The more people you have often leads to a much better experience.
    12. I always thought the Sega CD would have been a great place for many of the System 32 games. There would indeed have been a lot of concessions and cutbacks, but I feel many would have still been well worth the effort. Especially since the Sega CD had so few games that really showed off its scaling features.

    You know, I can finally explain it: What you do best over other TH-camrs is actually show off the games of the era in meaningful way. The correct amount of captured footage, the right amount of silence so we can hear the games.

    Loved this supercut. This helps me appreciate the Mega Drive/Genesis' initial market positioning with Sega's arcade ports, along with the thinking behind the Saturn's initial design. Altered Beast and Golden Axe are forever ingrained with my early days with the Genesis. I know I played Revenge of Death Adder in the arcade once or twice, but I didn't realize what an awesome looking game it was. What a unique look the System 32 games had!

    Sega should have released all of their system 32 games on the Neo Geo in the mid 90s and had Sammy do the publishing and/or development, a console where sprites were embraced in a rising "polygon or bust" era

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sammy was a Pachinko machine company is the reason why. Also I doubt the NeoGeo would be able to run all Sega System 32 games as it hardly was able to handle polygon games. The NeoGeo Hyper 64 maybe but the install base for that was very small. Also a few of the Sega System 32 games which support more than 2 players won't be possible as the NeoGeo couldn't support more than 2-players.

    • @starstarstar4643
      @starstarstar4643 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@VOAN Sammy published viewpoint on the neo geo in 1992 and sega genesis in 1994, which is why I specifically brought up Sammy (SegaSammy), and yeah it would be graphical scale backs but not many, and still would be worthy ports..and the system 32 didn't have polygon games, just sprite pixel games

    • @MaxAbramson3
      @MaxAbramson3 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Most of these System 24 and 32 games would've worked just fine on the Sega CD. It still chaps my hide that SEGA demanded $300 for what they'd been promosing since 1987--the arcade experience at home--but we STILL didn't have it by 1994 even though the hardware was in front of us.
      That--more than any other single issue--is what killed SEGA for millions of game enthusiasts!

I had Turbo graphics 16 a NES and a Genesis when they were all there was . The guy at gamestop used to say here's the guy with all 3 consoles. Then came Sony and Microsoft. And that killed Sega pretty much. Now it looks like they are doing what us fans wanted for years. Bringing back old games. Let's hope they don't blow it

    the first versions of system-16 arcade boards might have had a lot of colors, but you ONLY had 7 colors per tile 8x8. That's pretty low! It might have a lot of palettes, but you're limited to just 7 colors per tile... that's what gives the games a unique look. Sprites had more colors tho (14 colors per hardware sprite). IIRC, I think later model rev B boards boosted this limit to 15 colors per tile (same as the Genesis).

      @@Adamtendo_player_1 It's difficult to know what Sega's expectations where back them. Remember, before the MD took off in North America and Europe, Sega wasn't that successful as Nintendo in the market (at the time of the MD development). It's known what they expected for life expectancy for the system - because that probably would have played more into it's capabilities if they had thought it was going to last longer and go head to head with newer systems. Highsight is always 20/20. They could have made the full 12bit color palette available to the MD (the DACs are there). NEC could have made the full 32k color palette available too (the DACs are also there for it). Lot's of things they could have done.

    I did enjoy Sega MVP Baseball, but it's a good example of just how impressive SNK's Neo•Geo games were for their time. Take MVP, from 1989, and compare it to Baseball Stars Professional, on the Neo•Geo, released only a year later. Not only was it leagues ahead of most arcade games of its time, in terms of huge animated players, highly detailed face pics for every player, awesome stereo music, and tons of CD quality digitized speech, but getting games like that for a home system (in 1990) was simply amazing. Though it did take away a little of my hype for the SNES. :)
    MERRY CHRISTMAS, guys!

    When you look at Genesis games like Red Zone and Toy Story, I wonder if some of these games could have received decent home ports.

    'Fantasy Zone II' on the Master System is a Top 3 of all time favorite of mine. It's better than the original in every way IMO.
    The stages look better. The songs are awesome. The multiple zones in each stage is great. The story is better and ending is bittersweet, there are bills in addition to just coins (which float down like actual paper)...
    It's just such an awesome sequel.

    It's especially strange that Sega didn't boost their Saturn games roster by converting the System 32 titles, given that we now know they were making a loss on every Saturn console, so needed a lot more software sales to break even.
    Goldenaxe is the really obvious omission, but I think a lot of the others would have worked, perhaps as 'Sega Sports' compilation titles.

    I was just playing through a scenario in my head where Sega won the console war and not Nintendo. I wonder where we would be as far as gaming goes today?

    Waldo was originally a British creation and was always called Wally. It was only in the US they changed the name to Waldo, no idea why. I know you have the name Wally over there thanks to Wally West of The Flash fame.

    Slipstream and Daytona USA could've and shouldve been brought home to the Genesis. They would've been 40 meg carts, but could still couldve been big sellers.

      @@SegaLordXStill a port tho. Just a remix. And the arcade graphics they were changing/updating.. are in the ISO data tracks of the game (i.e. the original graphic assets).

    There is a home port of Riot City... its called Riot Zone for the TurboGrafx 16

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't really consider that a port since its been heavily modified.

      @SegaLordX well... you mention both eswat and shadow dancer as having been ported with changes. Why not riot city as well? It falls in line as a home conversion from an arcade original.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because on the Master System/home computers those games are largely the same, the visuals are just cut way back due to technology. Riot Zone was taken and purposely changed in terms of art and layout to barely resemble the original arcade.
