It's time for another Lawrie Goes Loco! This month we're returning to the Great Bush Railway at Tinkers Park and have a look at 'Sao Domingos' , an Orenstein & Koppel 2 foot gauge locomotive.

I am from Pedorido, Portugal. My father and both of my grandparents worked in the mines, which closed in 1991.
There were 5 of those locomotives, and one of tem is still on display on the town hall, although not working.
João Moutinho also lives here and his house is right where the mines used to be.
not being able to whistle...good lord where's the fun in that? that like...most of the point of having a steam engine!

Yeah, it is very dumb, also a little dangerous not having a whistle.
It's most disappointing. We couldn't use the whistle except for emergencies at the Mid Suffolk Light Railway for quite some time.
The bark of the exhaust more than makes up for it though!.

The way the railway works its not particularly dangerous, you can hear the Loco coming and the crossings are all manned.
@@lmm I do know here in the US you have to do massive modifications to the crossings if you want to go "Quiet Zone" (That's what we call not being allowed to whistle) and even then you can still sound it at the engineer's discretion. that is one thing I like about the US, you can't completely silence the voice of a loco, you know?
At the MSLR the whistles worked, we just didn't use them.
They tell me that they've made the whistle work down at the Great Bush now so it can be used in emergencies.
I just attached. Makeshift whiskey to my air pump and when I pull the air release thing it blowes a loud whisle

kind of like the snooty people who decide "hey lets build our neighborhood right next to a race track and then kill off said racetrack because its too loud" here in the u.s.
Yeah, you know the type. We have them over here moving next to music venues then complain about the noise 😂
@@lmm In the US we have even worse ones: the types who move next to an active railroad yard then complain about the noise of idling engines, crashing couplers, and the like.
Like dude, YOU chose to move there! The railroad has been there for over a century its not like its a secret!

Koppels are such clean looking things. Seems like you had a lot of fun with this one! The Germans really were clever about the ergonomics of this thing with that slick toolbox, that firedoor, and some very well laid out controls. That pump is really cool! It's like someone has attached a model engine under the locomotive!
Love your channel for showing us all these interesting features that most people wouldn't really notice or point out in great detail.

When they put the steam brake back on and the original handbrake it's going to be superb!
@@lmm Ooh yes, I've never actually seen a continental style handbrake before, let alone in actual use, sounds quite interesting! Can't wait to see what other interesting equipment you find.
I did once ride a not-quite O&K at the Talyllyn Railway ('Douglas') - It was a pretty lively ride as you mentioned with Ming, though it was running at a pretty hot pace for something with tiny wheels and it shook a fair amount, which just made it a more fun ride.
Cute little steamer, I love steam locomotives, my all-time favorite is the Union Pacific Big Boy 4-88-4 articulated, designed for use hauling freight over the Rocky Mountains in the mid-west here in the USA. Diesel-electric locos are easier to maintain and run, but there's nothing like the sound of steamer coming at you.
It's a lovely little locomotive.
Have you seen 4014 running yet? I hope to be able to get a look at it on my next trip over to you guys.
Diesel has nothing compared to steam!

Just discovered your videos a few days ago. I am hooked. Love all things railroading. In this video you mentioned the center driver is flangeless. In the states we refer to this type of driver as "blind".

Thank you for the video. Those mines are located in the village were I was born and lived for 32 years. My grandfather worked with the locomotives. It means a lot for us.

This loco felt somewhat familiar to me. It turns out that a heritage railway I used to visit very often as a child (Stoomtrein Katwijk Leiden, previously known as Het Smalspoor Museum) also runs some O&K locos! It’s nice to know that there are more engines like the ones from my childhood running on lines across the world
O&k were a hugely successful builder of locos - they can be found all around the world!

Not many Steam locos from the US are capable of visiting the UK because of loading gauges and stuff, but a Maine 2 footer could probably, do it. Seeing this engine made me think of that.
2 foot railways have differing loading gauges - the Welsh Highland Railways engines are out of gauge for the Ffestiniog.
But its more likely than most American stuff

Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels The whistle came from a Peckett loco, and is quite high pitched.

so lovly, I'm working at a steam train museum here in germany and we drive standard gauge engines. Atm we only have one working engine, but it's a lovly one. And ofc we are allowed to whistle, we're actually required to do so per law XD

Great video lawrie. I was wondering , do you know about the great cockcrow railway? It's a 7.25 inch gauge rapresentation if a main line railway. It's situated near chertsy (in Surrey ) and we open to the public every Sunday from 13.00 to 16.30. The railway closes for maintenance work after Halloween and reopens in may. We mostly run live steam locomotive but we also have some diesels ( which are actually electric except the class 55 deltic which is powered by a petrol engine.) I'm a volunteer there so if you came to visit we'll might meet 😀

That's the kind of loco i would happily roll onto a trailer and drive of with it! Ive seen some extremely tiny (i forget the gauge to be honest,it was tiny and under 2 foot im pretty sure) versions of these maybe 30% the size of this one in some pictures many moons ago, the one at the time was plinthed(i think some place in Tasmania, no not "Wee Georgie Wood" which is a smallish once plinthed now running loco over there ) but i believe ended up restored.Maybe one day (when fully tooled up, suitable place to do it and retired!) I will build something around this size,staring a bit smaller first though ;)
I suppose that they would have made a Loco to any specification that was asked of them really, they're not huge locos to start with so I would be intrested to see one of the smaller ones!
There's a couple of 2 foot locos in the UK that people have built, looks like a bit of fun!

Lovely little loco Lawrie even though I must admit I prefer standard gauge but that is my personal preference, I would love to have a go in a Class 37 diesel!!!!!

I saw this thumbnail and thought... I swear that’s tinkers Park! I live nearby and it’s such a nice collection there, you should do a video on the two ploughing engines they have there apparently they have a left hand and right hand engine and that’s extremely rare because when they were scrapping the engines they started on the line of right hand engines before they started being saved so there’s a load of left hand and hardly any right hand left and is rare to find a pair

There is very little that I can imagine that I would enjoy more.

I've seen it on other O&K locos, the little holes either side on each cylinder. Not the drain cocks, but the hole where the steam comes out sideways on every chuff, wondered what it was for seeing as its wasting steam?
That would be the drains cocks which let steam out.

it's so obvious you absolutely love your loco hobby. to be honest, i would too. i love machines, i always have. i've been working on them since i could hold a wrench. i get along better with them than most people. you always know where you stand with a mechanical contraption. people, not so much. for the most part, i still barely understand people. i can tell you what every part of an engine is, and does, but i haven't the foggiest notion why the average human does what they do, other than because. sorry, it's been a week of people driving me bonkers here.
I do really enjoy my hobbies full stop, I just like tinkering and driving things.
I wish I could have starters earlier but didn't have the opportunities, so I'm now making up for lost time 😂
People are hard 😂, we've all got our own way of doing things 😂
Honestly, I don't really call them "design flaws" I prefer to call them "features", because they don't really take away from the train, more so add to it! That's one of the reasons I like engines like Ming, because they have their own little quirks and features, and they just make Ming who she is.
My museum has quite an interesting little narrow gauge locomotive. Ex-Defiance Coal Company N°1, a 1921 HK Porter 0-4-0 built to 40-inch narrow gauge, it originally ran on a line roughly 1½ miles from the DCC's two mines to the coal tipple, located in Mentmore, New Mexico. After the mine shut down, a doctor from upstate New York bought it and displayed it at the legendary Rail City, the first operating steam railway museum in the United States. After the doctor passed away, the engine traded hands again, and I believe it was then owned by Mr. Roy Dunwell, whom the engine is named after now. Mr. Dunwell restored the engine to operational condition, and built a special flatbed truck trailer with rollers, so the engine can be fired up and run. It now is owned by the Railroad Museum of Long Island, of which I am a member, and as of this year, it's back to operation once again. I'm officially part of the Steam Team, and as such, I get to operate the little engine when we fire it up.

I've been there. The steam locomotives were made at a company were based in Stratford Upon Avon who made loads of locomotives and rolling stock for theme parks or pleasure railways.
I swear, steam locomotives have such large personalities that you would think they were alive!

trmn311 whistling became a problem for our Glenwood, South Park and Pacific 15" gage because of a neighbor too.

I thought all rail vehicles were required to have a working horn/whistle.
Heritage railways have their own regs.
All crossings are manned, and the line is fenced off, so its not a huge issue.
Those Orenstein&Koppel locomotives are quite common on 2ft/600 mm gauge all around the world. The works produced thousands of them from 10-70 HP size. Unfortunatly this one was quite a lot modified to British style features, that spoil the design a bit. The original lever hand brake is much better and faster to use, the new boiler has a different design with this strange long water gauge glasses and the kind of small aditional dome in the cab. Original fitted with 2 Strube suction injectors and swivel windows in the cab. The 2-step valve regulator seems to have some issue, maybe the stoke of the small relief valve is too big, so the main valve starts "jumping". The safety valves are not orginal, but from a ARN. JUNG built loco. Nevertheless it is a great video, well done Lawrie!

@@svenschlenkrich Hi Sven, I look after the locomotive. The regulator has been a headache for years with constant resetting. How far is the relief valve meant to move as currently it has about 3-4 mm? It lets though around 50psi and the main valve is solid as a rock unless you close both completely and open. You'll be pleased to know the lever brake is being refitted and it is being made to look more german again. It was rebuilt by a chap who restores traction engines, hence the unorthodox fittings.

@@lmm I know. As you said in the video, its a bit too small for our needs. The 0-6-0 that we have is undergoing a major overhaul to improve its wieght because the line is a continous gradient from slaggyford to alston

I've got a shunter engine myself. An upsized Hudswell Clarke Diesel Mechanical 0-8-8-0 Shunter, 26 cylinder with 0.7223 liter for each cylinder.

Yeah, quite the trek. The steam gala event is pretty good - that's borderline worth the effort if you had something else to do down here!

In spite of a few areas that I would like restored, it is a beautiful locomotive! She's fit for the Skarloey Railway on Sodor! Also, your fireman is named James! Just like a rather arrogant engine we all know!

There should be a law about noise... Before you buy your house next to a railway, workshop, pub, school, airport. You should tick a box saying "yes I'm aware there is noise"... Rather than people moving in then complaining.

Do you need some kind of license to drive those locos or can you just do it like that on the private railways?
Every railway has its own internal examination. I'm a driver at four different railways, so other railways will take those qualifications on board.

Not allowed to whistle.? I thought it was a necessity in law that if a right of way crossed the line at track level to give a warning of your approach.
If someone is not paying attention (& is rather deaf) a sharp pull on the whistle would save a potentially very gruesome accident.
NJPurling all crossings are manned on the line, the whistle is available for use however for emergencies only. It’s just how we have to run unfortunately.

of the things that make steam engines beautiful!!!
It's not dangerous at that railway, the railway is fenced off, and crossings manned. But it is a shame.
