I have wondered over the past year if the work environment problem Eccleston noted, tried to get corrected, and was told to shut it might have been about Noel Clarke. It would be very BBC to worry more about trying to reestablish Doctor Who than providing a safe workspace.

When it was cancelled, I wasn’t surprised. I did watch Paul McGann in the movie and enjoyed it. But when Chris Eccleston was chosen as the new Doctor, I tuned in again and watched it all. Until Peter Capaldi became the Doctor... I like Peter Capaldi and I have admired his many roles. I just didn’t feel personally that the Doctor was a good role for him. I lost interest again until Jodie Whitaker accepted the key to the Tardis and while I had hoped Chris Chibnall might have pulled a few rabbits from hats, I felt let down. I still have hope for Jodie in the role. Mark Gatiss should be asked to write some outlines and advise the scriptwriters on where to tighten things a little. Also, whoever wrote Blink with David Tennant, should definitely get to submit more scripts.
Chibnall is a terrible writer and it’s rumoured Whitaker is leaving at the end of her 3rd season. Christopher had an ED at the time of filming his season😞, it was the way he was treated and the fact that it was a very traumatic time for him that made him not want to come back. If eccleston stayed for 3 yrs, would it have affected the current new who regeneration ? E.g David would have stayed till Matt smiths 2nd series kinda time, and Matt might have been close to where Peter was? Or would Peter be skipped cause of political reasoning to get a female doctor in ? Or would would their be more discussion to who the next female doctor could have been?
sadly for who fans i doubt the series will survive jodi. that said for some reason companies seem to be willing to loose massive amounts of money so long as they are loosing it on something that pushes the right politics. see batwoman and super girl for example.
Many of the new Doctor Who doctors have referred to his portrayal (outwardly playful/ inwardly tortured) as an inspiration for how they approach the role.
Christopher Ecclestone is a great actor and it was a coup for the BBC to get him as the doctor. Looking at his career, he’s not the type of actor to sit back on his laurels and is always looking for new acting challenges.
Honestly I'd have preferred Eccleston to John Hurt in The Day of the Doctor because the way he acted with the Dalek the first time made him fit in as the War Doctor perfectly
Some of the problems (and it applies to a lot of SciFi) is down to the scriptwriters. Tell good stories and people will watch. Russell and Stephen have done an amazing job of bringing Dr.Who back by telling stories that were in a similar vein to the earlierest ones. (I'm old enough to remember them all from when they first aired in the UK - yes that old). Its too easy to take a property (such as Dr Who) and think that it will run of its own accord as long as the stories are passable. Nope. Not good enough. I'm of th opinion that Colin and Sylvester would have fared much better had they had better stories in general rather than just one or two stand out episodes. Maybe the current outing is suffering for the same reason. Tell good stories and they will come.
I myself totally get why they were in crisis mode after Tennant. I don't think the show regained what it had in that era. If Smith especially is so great, why did he make not even a quarter of Tennant's salary (which has not improved with subsequent actors as the Doctor when you take things like inflation into consideration) or come close to him in the overall polling?
Curiously, it was only a fixture in the first season. Each subsequent season featured a new and different scarf. The only one I noticed was the 4th season (?) red scarf.
To say that Sylvester McCoy was directly responsible for the show being canceled, and then taking that statement back a second later.. is just a little weird. Ever hear of Michael Ian Grade .... you know, the guy who wanted the show removed for years? .....
Can the BBC stop giving the middle finger to Doctor Who. It's one of the few shows that people still watch. They axed it once, almost axed it again, had zero faith in the show back then and now, gaves it a tiny budget and now they give the keys to the show to a hack show runner, writers with zero experience or passion in writing sci fi and forcing heir woke agenda to please the 1%.
@@desmondcarson2476 I agree Doctor Who has always been political and had messages. But the issue is the excuacution. And now, Eccleston is reprising his role in Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures.
A while ago someone, not sure if it was Acheson or Hinchcliff, admitted the scarf myth was bogus to create an amusing publicity story. It was actually inspired by the ridiculously long scarf worn by Alec Guiness in the 1955 film "The Ladykillers". Apparently people have worked out that if the knitter had used a whole ball of each colour the scarf would have been even longer.
Ik he’s not narrating this episode but let’s pay our respect to Rich and wish him well on his future journeys (he said on Twitter he’s leaving).
Shame this was his passion project

Oh really? Damn another bites the dust, if Jules goes next then WhatCulture is truly dead.

*3:18** No WONDER McCoy’s Doctor got grumpier in his second season...*
Mccoy is one of my favorite. Along with Ace, great pair.
@@jawstrock2215 agreed!
doctor Mccoy was always grumpy.
I imagine that most people consider Tom Baker and David Tennant their two favorite Doctors, with Matt Smith currently being number three. So I can imagine replacing both David and Matt made the suits at the top wonder if they should keep the show going.
I have wondered over the past year if the work environment problem Eccleston noted, tried to get corrected, and was told to shut it might have been about Noel Clarke. It would be very BBC to worry more about trying to reestablish Doctor Who than providing a safe workspace.
Also, Damn, I REALLY hoped that I would finally get a confirmation of the 'timelord monitor' shot from The Three Doctors being filmed in Hartnell's own garden. It's a long speculating rumour and it would be cool if it was true, considering it would be first, and so far only, time that an episode featured footage being shot at the house of one of the actors.
Actually, the scene in Spearhead From Space when Jon Pertwee emerges from the Tardis and passes out was filmed in his garden.
@@Cally.Summer Incorrect. That was filmed in some park, according to the Doctor Who Locations guide. I believe there is even a picture on the site of the spot where it was filmed.
@@timrob12 How odd. I was sure I read that somewhere. I must have dreamed it.
@@Cally.Summer Maybe you confused it with the 1995 fan production Devious where they recreated the scene from Spearhead from Space in the creators' garden.
It wasn't filmed in his garden .... it was filmed in his garage. His daughter told the story at a convention (and in several interviews).
What's the thumbnail got American Doctor Who for? Very definitely clickbait!
Sad to see you go rich, you were my favorite narrator, I wish you well
You should look up what ‘urban legends’ mean
Nice vid, shame about the clickbait!
With Chibnall in charge, I wouldn’t be surprised if the show gets axed again
Agreed. I only managed to watch one or two of the current Doctor Who. Too many changes were made and it just stopped being entertaining.
@@joegibson4946 yea Jodie Whitaker got dealt a bad hand. I honestly thought the start of her second season was great and the middle pretty good too but then it went downhill again towards the end. I'm starting to wish they'd ended with Matt Smith's doctor with the 12 regenerations thing. While there were good episodes after, there wasn't actually any truly great ones
It's absolutely rubbish now
I kinda agree. I'm PRAYING it doesn't. I still love the show. There is scuttlebutt that David Tennant may come back. That could save it for sure.
@@bjwieland-doucet5917 idk, as great as the 10th doctor was, I just feel like it would be way too much a blantant fanservice to me if an old doctor became the current doctor again. Bring in some new blood
I thought Sylvester McCoy was great!
He personally was my least favourite
I agree. Particularly the episodes where Ace was the companion. I thoroughly enjoyed those episodes
@@WarLordArtos yes they still work great together.
I though he breathed some new life into the show, especially in the episodes with Ace. (But then I lived in Greenford, right next to Perivale.)
I'd wanted him to be Dr Who for ages.. He was perfect so was really happy when he got the job... But hated the assistants. shudder. Felt like he was the patsy for the bbc wanting to get rid of the show.
The Tardis isn't identical to a 1960's Police Box. It's a slightly bigger and the windows are bigger too.
And sadly... 😢 now it isn’t fun anymore. I miss wibbly, fun and engaging Doctor.
Yeah I haven’t laughed in ages at the show
Most of these are not legends or myths but long established facts
If the show almost got/was almost canceled so many times before why can’t they cancel it now? I don’t want Chibnall ruining this any more I’d rather it be over
I noticed the tumb nail which mentioned an American doctor who and yes there is on and it is called bill and ted
Literally none of these have been considered Urban Legends, but Whatculture gotta Whatculture.
Glad to see some love being shown here for William Hartnell. (02:05) Good work!
It's amazing when it's got an audience the BBC worry and think of cancelling it, but have the audience abandon it and worldwide condemnation of an utter betrayal of the story and the BBC are completely deluded and irrational over its fan base and future...
Now that's irony...
Well Jodie and chibnuts are going to be the new reason for the cancelation
I;d always heard the reason Tom Baker din't appear in "The Five Doctors" was because he was working on something else at the time, and couldn't get away. I read that in a book about the show. But I keep hearing that he didn't want to.
McCoy's doctor was really missed out, I'd love to see the fans' reaction who had missed out on S25+26 later know how dangerous and manipulative his doctor was. Grade's lucky, if I wasn't alive after the 80s, Grade wouldn't have wanted to meet me. Also, Powell was right for cancelling the show, the budget was more fallen than S22 and the audience figures went away.
It might be because he was the doctor I first saw and grew up with, but I love Matt Smith's doctor
John barrowman definitely made Christopher leave
Christopher Eccleston bathes in a river? Doesn’t he have a home?
Clickbait much
The thumbnail did happen tho, there was an American Dr who movie
It almost starred Jeff Goldblum as the doctor.
@@Speedoodleman It wasn't included, or even mentioned in passing in the video, so it's still clickbait
01:50
Nope, Tom Baker's Waxwork is actually an Auton.
Ace made McCoy so much better! Eccleston was the best New Who Doctor!
Mcoys doctor is in my top 3 he is brilliant
I think Smith had more 10/10 episodes than Eccleston (though he did many more episodes) but he also had more lower rating ones whereas even Eccleston's worst episodes where still above average. So I'd say overall he is my favourite
Edit: spelling mistake
I will ALWAYS be a David Tennant lover. For me, he IS my Dr.
6:49 It should be pointed out that Christopher Eccleston is reprising his role as the Ninth Doctor in a new Big Finish Audio stories!
What? How could Christopher Eccleston possibly be typecast as the Doctor? I still have a hard time seeing him as the Doctor because he was so viciously evil in _Gone in 60 Seconds_ that I can never quite trust him in anything. I couldn't help but think of him as an asshole pretending to be friendly for some ulterior motive, even when the script gave no reason to suspect any such thing. If anything, playing the Doctor got him out of being typecast by demonstrating his range, at least in my eyes.
I get all goosepimpley wibbly wobbly with every new Doctor Who top 10! Love 'em!
I love WatchTitular. It is so titular! I think the hosts are paid by the titular. Where is Peri? She was so titular and had great titulars. Also... titular.
Sylvester McCoy was brilliant and he is fantastic in big finish
It might get the axe again with the current team.
Jodie and Chin-balls are the worst.
I never thought I'd say this, but I hope Dr Who is "rested" for a few years after Chibnall leaves so we'll have a chance to forget the whole abortion and the retcon of the retcon can be made easier.
I know nobody likes Chibnall with what he's doing on the show, but what is the abortion and the retcon of the retcon you are talking about. I genuinely don't know and am curious.
Hope so
@@Mkgyv3r my guess is he's referring to the idiotic "timeless children" nonsense, and his hope that the show can take that one back and restore the canon
@@Notanothercrayon That is indeed exactly what I meant. When my friend's 9 year old daughter cried becasue she understod the Timeless Child gibberish effectively destroyed her fav Doctor's finest moment (She's a massive Mat Smith fan) you know it's a clusterfuck. I;m not a man who hates easily, but I genyinely dispse Chibnall for screwing up the greatest scifi showin the world.
Peter Davidson is my hero. He brought Doctor Who back and all the new series. We owe him more than words can say.
love your videos
I think BBC had some merit saying the story of Doctor Who couldn't carry the show past David Tennant. I enjoyed Matt Smith as the Doctor, but Steven Moffat is a terrible lead writer for science fiction. I don't know how someone who wrote such masterful episodes such as Blink, Silence in the Library, and the Forest of the Dead, could so catastrophically ruin the whole show for me. I honestly feel bad for Matt Smith, that his Doctor had to be given such terrible writing.
And the name of the wardrobe lady that SEWED the scarf???
It was said, over the years, that it was a lady by the name of Begonia Pope.

The 7th doctor is still my favorite doctor, closely followed closely by the 10th
The BBC considered axing the series in 1969 due to viewing figures, but gave it one last chance to prove itself. The rest is history - colour, a shorter season and regular high figures.
Honestly regarding the mcoy segment, he is one of the greatest doctors, dark, controlling and would of ended rhe time war in one plan I will always stand up for mcoy, plus his big finish shows off his dark side side and mcoys talent!
His first season was awful, but after that I agree. It's a shame they cancelled the series right when it was producing some genuinely great episodes. I vigorously defend Colin Baker against any detractor in a similar way.
@@Sir_Gerald_Nosehairs. season 24 wasn't great but It is a guilty pleasure lol but season 25 and 26 were fantastic, have you heard the hex story arc with mcoy and Colin?

The BBC were right to worry after David but not because of Matt, because of Moffat and his show running! There were also rumors the show was to be canned after Troughton.
04:16 I didn't know Russell was also called "Rusty". ^_^
So I'm not the only person who heard it then
Pretty sure they said Russ T. Davies...
Im pretty sure Christopher Eccleston had anorexia when he was on Doctor Who and had to stop cause of that (and other reasons) but I am just surprised you didnt mention it cause it seems very relevant
Maybe it's just me, but I never heard anyone pronounce 'premise' to rhyme with 'demise' at 2:00
I really hate typecasting. Im sorry Christopher Ecleston...
Maybe he'd be better as a villain in some other movie or just a side character
I wasn’t impressed much by Jon Pertwee and I only watched a few shows. When Tom Baker took over, I was instantly hooked. Then when Peter Davison took over, I lost interest again. I saw one or two moments with Colin Baker and didn’t like it at all and I remember Sylvester McCoy from his time at Vision On so I had completely lost any faith by that stage.
That would me Moffat
Chibnall is a terrible writer and it’s rumoured Whitaker is leaving at the end of her 3rd season. I’m glad she’s going as she’s been prettty dreadful but unfortunately Chibnall who has presided over a jaw dropping fall in viewer numbers is staying. Looking forward to watching the show again once he’s gone but not before. Life’s too short to watch #CrapWho episodes.
@@CraigTulloch they probably need a whole damn crew change. Everyone when Jodie's 3rd season is over they should have a hiatus and drop them all
@@WarLordArtos obviously this is older and I have time on my side. I’m excited to get RTD back and some good writing on board. I wish Jodie would stay for a couple episodes with him because I think she had so much potential and chibnall just messed it all up
@@occheermommy funny thing is Chibnall wrote some good episodes before he became head writer, it seems that's when it went downhill. It's like he just posted the first draft once he had the final say. I will give the next season a go, but I don't see anything beating the first 4 but anything is better than that Giant Spider episode, teasing Jack Harkness will be in an episode and then not even a minute of air time, and of course The Doctor not even caring about blowing up a TARDIS which is a living thing. Then that horrible mini season they had for Whitaker's last run, I've never seen a whole season rate so low on IMDb, and ironically the tiger reminded me of when Doctor Who got cancelled
Christopher had an ED at the time of filming his season😞, it was the way he was treated and the fact that it was a very traumatic time for him that made him not want to come back. The scene in Dalek shows this really well, I can guarantee he wouldn't of wanted to have his body filmed if he was struggling with his mental health. I think there was others things like arguments but that's the main reason. He is technically "back" for the audio stories but we'll never get him back properly.
Take care and good luck rich on all your future endeavors
If eccleston stayed for 3 yrs, would it have affected the current new who regeneration ?
E.g David would have stayed till Matt smiths 2nd series kinda time, and Matt might have been close to where Peter was? Or would Peter be skipped cause of political reasoning to get a female doctor in ? Or would would their be more discussion to who the next female doctor could have been?
no mention of the "Current" Doctor? 👀
sadly for who fans i doubt the series will survive jodi. that said for some reason companies seem to be willing to loose massive amounts of money so long as they are loosing it on something that pushes the right politics. see batwoman and super girl for example.
Nobody asked me! I thought Sylvester's Doctor was "Aces"! ♥♥
Many of the new Doctor Who doctors have referred to his portrayal (outwardly playful/ inwardly tortured) as an inspiration for how they approach the role.
I bet they have all the faith in this new female doctor
I hate and detest those blasted adverts right in the middle of a video. That kills it for me and I have to leave the rest of the show, unseen.
Get an ad blocker.
If you put the video to the end and reload it again all the ads will be gone at least on mobile 📱
Who else is rlly young but loves dr who including the old dr's aswell
I really like the old on3s much better
Doctor who is currently dead
Chinball killed it
I myself totally get why they were in crisis mode after Tennant. I don't think the show regained what it had in that era. If Smith especially is so great, why did he make not even a quarter of Tennant's salary (which has not improved with subsequent actors as the Doctor when you take things like inflation into consideration) or come close to him in the overall polling?
Yeah you forgot about the American Doctor who reboot in the 1990s!!! Outrageous!
As I just commented on another Urban Legends video from you guys, LSD isn't actually like that, lol
Wish they'd commented on the current state of affairs with the 13th doctor
Wasn't that scarf a permanent fixture of Tom Baker's Tardis tenure?
Curiously, it was only a fixture in the first season. Each subsequent season featured a new and different scarf. The only one I noticed was the 4th season (?) red scarf.
To say that Sylvester McCoy was directly responsible for the show being canceled, and then taking that statement back a second later.. is just a little weird. Ever hear of Michael Ian Grade .... you know, the guy who wanted the show removed for years? .....
Your thumbnail is misleading as fuck. What about "the American Doctor Who?"
Still, lol. You must be joking. Its worse than Woke Wars.
I mean doctor who has always had political themes, you just might not have noticed until they directly said it to you
@@desmondcarson2476 I agree Doctor Who has always been political and had messages. But the issue is the excuacution. Instead of hinting at It, using visuals, characters actions or write it naturally with the story.
Nope let's have the doctor standing in the front of the camera spelling it out like a after school special. Look at episodes like Rosa and Orphan 55. They end with something youll see on a young children education show.
@@ff10fire666 ironic given that Doctor who was meant initially to educational they managed to get around it by having adventures in the past to educate the viewer and episodes in the future to for the Sci-fi aspect look at the original episodes "An Unearthly child, The Daleks and Edge of Destruction (2 budget saving episodes), Marco Polo, The Keys of Marinus, The Aztecs, the sensorites aside from the Daleks and Edge of Destruction it was a Past story, Future story, past story etc in order to fulfill an educational quota the BBC had hit the show with.
The writers have missed a HUGE opportunity with Whittaker's Doctor. Make the Doctor a woman? Have her experience problems from a woman's perspective. Disregarded in favour of the male companion (Graham), her ideas not given the same weight, and so on.
I love McCoy as well as Ace
