The fact that he would risk his life for lizzie carmine with the hammer of dawn coming right at him made me like him even more
Yeah, it's a shame that Lizzie died and JD couldn't save her. It must have had one hell of an effect on him as well as how he felt his recklessness got her and a lot of other people killed when he suggested using the Hammer of Dawn to fight the Swarm. It's easy to see why JD would become more taciturn and by the book as well as distant; he blamed himself and felt if he did that, no one else would die on his watch.
Tbh the hammer of dawn looked like the only solution at the time and honestly if no one had acted lizzie's convoy would have been destroyed regardless.

I feel sorry for JD, he used the Hammer of Dawn in order to save the civilians, and unfortunately in doing so inadvertently cause Lizzie's death. If he hadn't done that the Swarm would have overrun their position. JD tried to do the right thing and tragedy struck. He blames himself and now tries to do things by the book. Feeling like he failed because he went on instinct.

My only hope for Gears 6 is to give JD some development and undergo some changes since I decided to save him for Marcus’s sake. Let alone a father tried to help him overcome the similar pain he has in the past games.
A.J Thomas I do find it stupid that they make you do the “Choose who Dies” because it’s like the writers are treating Del and JD as expendable.

A.J Thomas I also saved JD only because I didn't want Marcus to lose everybody. He's already lost Dom, Adam, and Anya, I didn't want him to lose his son too. It sucks because Del was smart, funny, and in my opinion, had more personality than JD. What's happening to Gears? They making you chose who to save and who will die, now that's way more work to put into future games, "CHOICES".
Btw when I first saw people chose Del to live, I thought it was going to be some sort of twist and JD end up surviving somehow but nope.

I think the whole point of the drastic change is sinply to highlight the fact that as kait said "you two are more alike than youd care to admit" aside from looking very similar there are also parallels in the way they handle loss. If you choose to save jd marcus will try to consol jd only to have jd brush marcus off. And if you choose to save del. Kait tries to talk to marcus only to have marcus brush her off. They both just become bitter and shut themselves off from the world.

But the thing is marcus treats everything as though it is his burden, which is clearly due to the lack of family bonding he had as well as the family he gained within the cog. Also marcus had a reason to prove himself. He was branded a traitor for a moment of weakness in which he abandonned ephyra for his dad.

@@kevinesquivel1867 Marcus literally did the exact same thing his father did to James. He sent him to boarding school to be raised just like his father did to him. And James did exactly what Marcus did joining the COG just like his father did. Anya also died while James was young much like Marcus’s mother disappeared when he was young. You’re entire point is incorrect. Their difference in personality comes from the fact JD grew up while there was peace, whereas all Marcus ever knew was war because he was born during the Pendulum War. Finally Marcus never gave a shit about redeeming himself after going AWOL to save his father. He just wanted to keep fighting the locust no matter what.
They shouldn’t have even given the player an option to choose at the end of the game.. they essentially shot themselves in the foot from a story-telling standpoint for Gears 6.. they either have to make two very drastic story lines or choose a canonical story line and follow through with that.. there is so much more to JD’s character redemption arc that they can go into, and his relationship with Marcus.. without JD, Marcus literally has nothing/no one to fight for.. Seems like he’d be way too eager to self-sacrifice with JD being there.. I guess we will see what they end up doing.

His dads words stuck with him after the hammer strikes he changed cause he took an unnecessary risk, so now he’s following the book an getting the job done like Marcus tells him, which changes JD cause he feels the hammer strike was unnecessary after loosing Lizzie an half the convoy.
But it was neccessary as there were too many swarm forces to fight without the hammer.

Also Marcus was given a life sentence which was originally gonna be death. So ya Marcus faced consequences. JD’s appearance changed because he changed. Plain and simple. A coma, accidentally killing your comrades, and losing your friends will definitely make you change and become a different person. He made the wrong decisions. I have a couple videos on Gears 5. Let me know what you think of them! :)
How did he make the wrong choices? The Hammer was the only way they were going to 'win' that.
he didn't make the wrong decisions if anything del and kait leaving him just shows they base friendship on actions and not trust jd made a bad action at settlement 2 then changed for the better only to have his friends leave him behind

I always thought JD was an arrogant douche, and that’s cuz he was. I really feel like the Lizzie situation changed him, as it should have. But it also made him a way more likeable character, plus he looks way more badass. Him running straight at Lizzie to save her proves that he’s not just some asshole who thinks he’s a hot shot. He’s got heart. I feel like he always saw himself as more of a celebrity rather than a soldier, and I think that really clicks with him at the end of this game. If he dies he goes out like a soldier and if he doesn’t, Dels death makes him realize this shit ain’t a game. Lizzies death really hammered that sentiment home first though (no pun intended) Del was just the icing on the cake for the to click with him. I like Del more cuz he has always just been a good guy and didn’t have to let people die for him to stop being a douche so I would’ve chose to save him on my first play through if not for Marcus. Bro has lost too much I couldn’t take away JD too. I mean bro, Dom, Anya, Adam, Tai, like bro has lost so much family and friends, I just can’t do that to him. Not again.

You gotta feel for JD he thought the Hammer of Dawn would help win that battle in Settlement 2 which it did but it had cost the life of Lizzie Carmine due to the malfunction since then he feels going by the book would make sure there would be less deaths to people he cares about

He lost patches of hair due to the hammer, got a scar on his face from it and burns on his body. Most notably his arm.

Spoil...........I didnt find the trio very charismatic in Gears 4. Very generic look for JD Del and Kait and not interesting. Gears 5 on the other hand manage to make JD more human...he make mistakes and need to learn from them and his new look gave him a more charismatic look and an interesting personnality because he's not completely "good" Same goes for Kait now she's interesting and even if her connections with the locust seems to already be dealt with (i though it would have last until Gears 6) she certainly gain interest here. Del though.........Was an easy choice at the end lol
I chose Del bc he stood by Kait the whole time, plus JD is the most generic of them all
I chose JD because of Marcus and a line of dialogue in act 2. Kait and Del were venting their frustrations about JD and how he closed himself off and is being an asshole but the next line Kait asks Del about his parents and Del gets really mad and tells her he doesn’t want to talk about it, when Kait presses him he explains he gets angry about it and closes himself off and that’s how he deals with it. Choice was pretty easy when looking back.
I really liked gears 5 JD especially after the incident with the hammer, he looks more badass and serious, just like his father
I hope gears 6 focuses more on JD or at least Marcus. Also idk if it's me or not but I personally didn't care about Kait at all throughout gears 5. she was introduced in gears of war 4 and I never grew to her the same way I did with JD

Marcus was out of line, they went to Azura to secure a Hammer of Dawn and JD took a risk. If he hadn't who knows the Swarm probably would have killed more people attacking the settlement.

I really hated the way JD looked before the transformation. Marcus always looked like a badass but JD looked like he was in a freakin 90's boyband. I was relieved when he turned up looking much better

The way I see it jd is a combo pack of Steve rogues and Bucky barns. The Steve part with his rank has captain and how does everything by the book and just fellow orders. The Bucky part the scars of his past like his arm and the memories of what did haunt him still.

The reason he’s fucked up was because he refused an order thinking he could fix things on his own. Which got people killed. Now he’s trying to keep those he’s loves from encountering the same fate by using the same control he refused.

For me, canonically speaking JD is the one that likely dies in gears 5. It makes more sense for the story as a whole to keep Del alive and Kill JD
First time in settlement 2 was his fault, second time wasn’t but he still held a grudge of innocence being killed because of his recklessness. In fact JD is the greatest among the crew because he can take the leap like Marcus. He has more character than both Del and Kait combined. What’s funny about Lizzie’s death is it’s kinda full circle for Marcus. Marcus still thinks about Anthony and Benjamin and felt like he failed Benjamin the most. I’m the gears 3 opening act we see them both in the dream of an event they were not supposed to be in and play as them. At the end we hear Marcus yell out for Carmine when his chopper caught on fire from myrrah. And just Like Lizzie, JD feels the same thing.
