Mine gets 12 mpg. It's ok since it is used sparingly. it was better before the election when gas was 2.19 in my town. Now it's over 3.10 and climbing. I reminded people about gas prices under Obama/Biden. They were up to 3.89 here. I knew what Biden would bring.

Grew up driving my dad's 86 4x4 f250 extended cab, 4:11 gears w/the 4 speed manual and the 460. It got about 10mpg empty or loaded as long as you didn't open up the secondary butterflies in the carb. Pop those baby's open and it turned into a gas guzzling monster. But man it was fun at about 6 mpg!

The 460 was an awesome motor at the time. But in all honesty nobody bought it for fuel economy. Also remember that this motor was designed and built at a time when nobody could have ever imagined that one day we would be paying well north of $4.00/gallon thanks to certain Presidents.

@@MrBlitzkrieg1987 I purchased the whole kit from them late last summer and have been driving with it for almost 6 months now. While the kits ARE good, and DO make a SIGNIFICANT difference to throttle response and power, the mileage results I'm seeing are negligible at best. I haven't gone anywhere far to test highway mileage yet, but I was averaging 12.5 mpg HWY / 8.5 to 9 mpg in town on 91 octane on my motor prior to the full rebuild (during which these parts were installed). After the rebuild, I'm consistently averaging 9 mpg in town on 87 octane.
TLDR: Don't buy the emissions kit and other 460EFIGuys parts for the fuel mileage gain, because you probably won't see it. INSTEAD, buy the kit and parts for the POWER and RESPONSIVENESS you will gain. That will make you MUCH happier with the purchase! I promise you that! My truck is a whole different monster after just a few of these parts!

After owning a 1995 F250 with a 460 this is what I found. First Fords like Conoco gas so if you want to improve fuel economy go there. I have seen improvement on 8 different Fords from various ECU platforms that Ford had. Chevron gas was 12.5 didn't matter what you did. Switch to Conoco I can under steady 55 to 60 mph driving pull 14.5 (with a different tire I have more). The worse I have ever gotten was 8.5 driving in the winter with the four wheel drive because of the snow 15 degree temps (runs longer on the rich cycle) and lot more idling. Basically I run between 10 mpg to 15 mpg. and most of the year it will be getting between 11 mpg and 13 mpg. This has the E4OD , 3.55 gears, and stock tires. When your brave enough to deal with California Fiveology does the wires for constant voltage for when you pull the air pump and egr so that the check engine light won't come on. They also sell the Ford conversion kit from bank fired speed density to maf also if you want to upgrade to modern fuel injection plus use a tuner. This motor internally is different than the other 460's. The liners are thinner which means less over bore. Liners are longer to allow for more skirt on the piston for when these engines where used in 5 ton trucks so the crank can't be balance internally which means they are externally balanced. The intake manifold and head are matched specific together but have nothing in common to any other head for the 460 so when you swap one the other will also have to be changed. Yes you can change the parts out to aftermarket but you need to understand when you do this there may be more then you realize that needs to swapped. Gale Banks does make a smog legal header and exhaust system also. Need a 2nd mortgage on the house to afford that.

I have a 1997 460/7.5. When i first got it, the fuel mileage was absolutely terrible. I installed a wide band O2 sensor on it and it was running at about 10/11 to 1 on fuel ratio. I did some reading and it was recommended to replace the ECM. I replaced the ECM and my fuel ratio stays at 13 or so. I went from about 10 miles per gallon to 16/17. If I had an older 460/F series truck, I would put a Holley throttle body fuel injection system on it. If you have one of these and want better power and fuel economy, install a wide band and go from there. These engines are so large that a slightly off fuel ratio makes a huge difference.

I just installed a 460efiguys (emissions compliant version) throttle body kit on my 1997 standard cab F350. So far, after several tanks of gas, my fuel economy went from around 11.8 mpg on average to about 14.6 mpg on average. A decent increase in my opinion. My truck still has all the emissions garbage on it, but I chose to leave it on since my truck has only 40K original miles and I don't want to butcher it yet. I also did notice a big difference in low and mid-range power but the top-end seems to be the same. I also just moded a 4" air intake to use the factory cold air box, instead of the 460efiguys "classic" air filter, so that may also give me a very slight bump in mpg. For the price and ease of installation, I would definitely do it again.

My old man had for his company truck an '89 F-Super Duty dually (basically an F-450 cassis cab) and a utility box on the back. 460 EFI engine, 5-speed manual like this one, 2wd. That thing was an absolute pig on fuel even when it was brand new. It hovered around 7 mpg for him. He also blew OD out of the transmission a few times. We also had a late '70s F350 dually with the carbureted 460 in it and that thing got 4-5 mpg loaded or not. I'm very impressed with the numbers you got here, even if the 11mpg number is closer to accurate. Granted his utility box truck was a lot heavier but your results still surprised me.

Never got it higher and I was driving pretty darn slow. But I'm convinced my 95 F250 with 460 and 4.10 gears is the same, if not harder on the highway than in stop-and-go driving at lower speeds. It seems like my truck is an example of "slower=better mileage, faster=worse mileage"

13 isn't bad at all for a 460. I've had small blocks do worse lol. I had a 1969 Chevy with a mild 350 and a 71 Ford with a 460 and they both got 10mpg. Ford had a crane torque cam and 410 gears and Chevy had stock cam and 411 gears. So a 460 doing 10 to 13mpg is pretty good considering how BIG it is. Your efi is adding a few mpg. The carb 460 will pretty much get 10mpg all the time

    • @MrBlitzkrieg1987
      @MrBlitzkrieg1987  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hello, thank you for watching! 7.5 is just the cubic inch displacement converted to liters and its just a number that stuck with me because I worked at Autozone many years ago! Actually the aftermarket for these trucks is limited, but it is the same 460 block that has been around since the 60s. You can easily bolt on pre smog era heads a hot cam and add some compression and turn this into a monster. Or even build a 500+ cubic inch stroker. But if you plan to stick with the original EFI then yes there are some limitations.

can i suggest for you to look into a old article for 4x4 magazine from 1994 called "project mpg " it should help bring those numbers up for you :) also if you run the smog pump 24/7 and route the smog sys back into the air box ,you know have turned the smog pump into a poormans power charger putting 90 cfm of air straight into the motor dependant on the rpms the motor is turning( as well as the natural air it takes in ) . as well as reburning any unspent fuel and refilling any unused space in the combustion chamber with inert gas . leave the electrical plugged in for the solenoids on the solenoid pots, and loop the vacuum lines, and then just loop in the Co2 ( exhaust /cat line ) lines direct with the smog pump and the re plumb it . by doing so the smog pump will draw the exhaust like it is supposed to but better as it is now 24/7 and as well and limited by the control valves . just one trick amog a few i had done to increase my mpg with out rebuilding and doing significant changes to the engine it self . also if that is a efi system look into changing your injectors to say a jeep from a 04 persay they are a 4 spray pattern compared to the single spray pattern and will allow for better atomization of the gas and as such will give you a few more mpg ;). if you want to get in touch with me on these ideas you can reach out to me via facebook TIMmORON1@yahoo.com you will see me and my two boys inthe icon pic and a wolf background for the cover photo

They are not stock & I have low gears in the axles & the older stuff like mine do not have overdrive transmissions so rollin down the hyway at 60 they turn about 2800 -3000 rpm depending on what tires I have on. I've seen my 466 truck on the average get as low as 6mpg & maybey as good as 11mpg. About what would suspect somthing that has 400 hp & rolls down the road at 3000rpm all day

I got 13 because I kept it under 2500 rpm the whole time and I did about 65 on the freeway. The truck was completely unloaded and this one comes with 355 gears, I know 410 gears give up a little gas mileage but they produce higher torque. Also if you are running taller tires on your truck the odometer readings could be off by a lot.

with a full tank and 98 miles and i put in 6.50 when i had got to my destination, that was about 15 mpg. that seems to be the best i can get out of my 1996 f250 460, pulling my 32ft camper going about 50 mph i get 14.7 mpg. i run the timing at about 12 rather than the factory 10. the worst i've got was 12 mpg which with these big blocks isn't terrible, my grandfathers 400 in the 78 ford got 6 mpg, now that stinks.

I just went from a 2017 Peterbuilt with 1850 torque at 1150 rpms to a 23 Volvo 760 that has the same exact ratings as the Pete but gets its full torque at 950 rpm.....also the Pete did 70 at 1240 rpm and my Volvo does 70 at 1450 rpms...BUT the Volvo gets 1.4 mpg better.

That’s an interesting suggestion! If I was super committed to gas mileage I would consider doing that. Im mainly trying to get as much as I possibly can with the current set up, Im also interested in getting more power out of the 460 and I think that will be the next thing I focus on.

    • @hextorcampis6113

@@MrBlitzkrieg1987 supposedly the 460 likes it . Because the propane is cold gas that cools it down.
And you can keep the gas still. It’ll be dual fuel . You can switch back and forth. And it’s plug and go type set up not complicated.
