I got my N40L box out from the storage used with FreeNAS 7 from 10 years ago. I updated to TrueNAS Core and ordered some RAM. Good to know that people are still using them.

Thats fun - I have my N40L now for ~10 years and it works still like a charm. I only had to replace the power supply (there is a cheaper option then the overpriced HP labeled.)
I also added now Truenas core 3 weeks ago and > runs. Maybe the power for bigger raids and the nie apps are too much for the small cube but I am still happy with it.

We can conform installing a 22B Seagate hard drive (2023) that was detected with a native 2011 bios

Great video. I'm glad to see there's still interest in the older microservers after 14 years. I would like to install a NAS OS on mine but I suspect the mini-SAS connector is damaged as BIOS doesn't recognize any drives plugged into the front drive slots. It's a real bummer.

I'm still using my N40L and it's still going strong. Upgraded to TrueNAS scale.
Admittedly it's only being used as a backup server.
For sure an old machine it's pretty solid..

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 on both my Gen 7 and Gen 8 microservers. Intend to use the Gen 7 for serving my video files for editing (proxy because of gigabit network and not 10 gigabit). Also, Windolene might be bad, but a wipe should work on your HP monitor!

You can add another two hard drives, I put a hot swap bay where the optical drive goes.

Is your N36L also have problem with clicking and strange noise on disks when these are idle? I had to "ping" my drives every 3 seconds by random byte read, because when they are going idle they are making sound like working but they don't. I've checked drives on my desktop and all are quiet, also its not OS problem because this weird sound (its like header working but more annoying than normal work) is appearing before OS boots and stays untill disk will get some reads or writes.
Its strange that all disks have the same issue and only on N36L, so it has to be issue with N36L, the question is what is that and how to turn this off in bios (I have modded one but the same issue was on original 041 bios)
Edit: it looks like its some power saving issue that tries to park the disk header but without success, can disk power management can be disabled in bios?

Ive added 2 more 3.5 and 1 more 2.5 ssd (7 disks in total) running unraid as my Syno backup.

The problem with this nifty machine is that today you can get a 6tb hard drive for really cheap, and maybe get 2 6tb drives for a lot less money than the cost of one of these. The drives would not only provide you with redundancy in case of failure, but also hold much more storage than this machine who would be in the corner sipping power. Don't get me wrong, I have two of these. However, I replace them with what I just mentioned...

Why wouldn't you just upgrade the drives in the HP if you already have it? These can handle 10tb+ drives and I believe there's a 20tb drive that's been tested to work.

Can you saturate a 1gb connection? I was thinking about getting a 2.4g nic and a more capable storage controller

Do Truenas have Firewall? I plan to use it with Dynamic DNS and WebDav but i worry my NAS hacked by another ip connection from different country!

The bios should be able to handle the 16GB ram upgrade. I'll try the TrueNAS Scale with 2x8GB and post an update.

    • @corvusaflame713
      @corvusaflame713 ปีที่แล้ว

@@johntre7656 you shouldn't use only 8GBs. But you can force it. Try not to add extra services to the OS. The more storage and services, the slower your TrueNAS will run. I got a little intel atom box with 4gbs providing 8TBs of storage to a steam gaming PC. It works well enough.
