I have a Synology 1817+ and I love it! I had tried Plex on there for a day or two, but my CPU ran at 99% all day long. I soon scrapped that at put Plex back on my Media PC. So my media PC now runs Plex, Channels DVR, SABnzbd, Dognzb, and NZBPlanet. My NAS just holds all my media and important files, using SHR-2, similar to RAID 6. I have just over 17 TB of USABLE storage space, and already using just over 12 TB. I LOVE IT!!!!!!

There's also cloud storage, SBC storage, or a synchronized folder on a friend's computer.
Personally I have two Synology units since I love them so much, and two powerful home-brew machines. That said, the Raspberry Pi OMV is a lot of fun when compared to the serious machines.

    Hey, budget!
I don't know if would put power consumption on the cons column when it refers to a NAS. Most times people end up using and old computer as centralized storage and (depending on the PC) they suck up a lot more power than a dedicated NAS unit.
Just a thought. Really great videos sir.

    • @aurvaroy6670
      @aurvaroy6670 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

True. That con should've been moved. There are ways to make a NAS running on pc hardware consume less power if it's running Unraid. Unraid has that option to spin down disks, which helps save power, and a plug in to make the system sleep, just like a normal pc.
Also, it best to get a 80+ gold or better PSU with at least double the wattage you need so that the PSU operates at its maximum efficiency.

Thanks for your videos! .... I've been searching about accessing a NAS wirelessly for video editing. (their answer is right away "why would you do that?)
The thing is I have a NAS directly plugged with LAN cable to my main editing PC, (I get 120 MB/s enough for my videos) but I want to also edit from my laptop without cables.
I'm planning to get a Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router hoping I can configure it as a switch and also use my laptop thru WIFI to access files/etc.
But I'm not sure if the speed will be enough for editing. I'll be happy with 100MB/s (gigabyte speed) over wifi. -- Modern routers offer 1300 mbps so in theory should be enough.
Would the router work as a switch???
Would WI-Fi give me at least 100 MB/s speeds?
    do I make any sense?
    --- Thanks a lot.

I’m looking to create a “shared folder” with a colleague of mine who works remotely (i.e. a folder easy to navigate via file explorer). I simply want a folder called “Z: [Business Name]” where we each can upload and download files both locally and have them stored locally on each of our laptops for indexing. Question #1): Since my colleague works remotely, can he still access the shared drive on the network?
-Question #2) I just purchased two licenses for one drive for business (standard), but is this best solution to accomplish my goal? (I’d prefer not have all our company information “in the cloud” but I’m okay with it if this is the best option.)

I enjoyed your video. I have a a real nerdy question: Commercial NAS, does it still connect via the router and does the router influence the way the NAS works eg. if a router uses SMBv1 for connecting a usb drive and file sharing, and the NAS has SMBv2, which takes precedent? As the NAS is still connected through the router?

    • @BudgetNerd
      @BudgetNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The router just routes packets. I'm sure a router couldn't force devices to use a specific protocol. Other network devices could, but your basic home/small business router wouldn't.

I assume that this NAS concept could still work if instead of having the NAS unit at your home with your other computers, setup the NAS at a family or friend's house and set it up on their network (without them having access to the data without a password). I mean, if a fire were to occur at my house; my computers, NAS device, thumb drives and everything would likely go up in smoke.

How to integrate NAS with often network provider provided routers? The speeds seen on videos of 130MB/s or even 260MB/s do not even require much RAIDing as modern HDD support 200MB/s sustained R/W. So how does router bottlenecks it? What to look at in choice of router when setting up NAS? Or should I add a switch. A 1Gb switch on eBay cost £25 but it has 48 ports. I certainly do not need that many. On the other hand routers which boast 100+ MB/s speeds cost hundreds of pounds. I feel this aspect is completely overlooked in the video.

like I want insert 4 HDD for starters
    1 for movies,
    1 for series,
1 for personal files and documents and
    1 for others.
Then i want to use Plex to stream my movie and series hdd also with a option to copy the movie on a laptop basically downloading it from the Nas and also able to stream the content with internet outside of my network.
I want to access, store and download my personal hdd files but that drive needs to be password protected so noone can access it.
Finally the HDD for others is used for family members to store data by accessing the drive anywhere from the world
So what should I do I have a pc which will soon be retire and I am thinking of using it as the server but I don't know if I can achieve all of this.

I have an Icy Box NAS. Its used to watch movies on TV and other stuff. Some of these movies would play only on the computer because they are really large files. It has three drives. So my friends helped setting it up so the PC could see its drives. We basically made the PC think these were internal drives whenever the drives are connected to it. So whats going on is 10 port USBs are used to connect the drives before the NAS is turned on. Remember to follow the guidelines on setting up your NAS. Make sure you take the sheet which shows how to connect it wherever you take your NAS. The NAS is connected with a Blu - Ray player and the files show up on TV as USB units. In your computer, the files will show up under drive letters. To make new files you right click on each drive letter and then put whatever film or picture you want to save. This NAS had not been connected to a computer network though.

Thanks, it was very informative, but just one thing that is a great pet peeve of mine:
NOT EVERYONE RUNS WINDOWS; There are several other OS's one may choose, some way more suitable and reliable for a NAS and networking in general, especially cluster computing that is insanely difficult on Windows, let alone that it is spyware right out of the box, and has so many other disadvantages anyone serious about computing will want to avoid at all cost! So pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease, for humanities sake: add the intended os in the title, or at least in the liner notes, so people don't waste their time with info they cannot use, and give you the thumbs down, which I would have done if it weren't for the portions of value on all platforms!

    >not using a linux distro on a headless hardware and samba, or sftp (or both)
    Not nerdy enough. UNSUBSCRIBED !
Ok, jokes aside, it is a good guide. I didn't even know WMP had such a feature. For streaming on the network, I always used VLC, but I couldn't control what I stream directly from the client, only from the server. What I would add is that most solutions have the CON of scalability, except for the DIY solution. So the "only as good as your hardware is" can actually apply to all your devices, be it your PC, router, commercial NAS or DIY NAS.
Also, only the DIY solution is more configurable. You don't want a redundant storage, but want a separate backup disk instead? No problem, just use one disk for the continuously accessed data (or 2 disks in raid 0 for speed) and 1 disk for backup (or 2 disks in raid 1) and set incremental backup every day, with a full backup every 2 weeks or so, with a full backup retention of 3 or 4 backups. You may also archive the old full backups to save some storage. I also need to mention that if you'll have 2 disks in raid 0 on the normal usage, you will need the disk for backup to have the same capacity as your whole other array. You may also want 2 disks in raid 1 for your backup. So if you need speed for accessing and want redundancy for your backups, now you need not 1, but 2 disks that have the same capacity as your normally accessed array. The good thing about the DIY solution is that you can mix and match however you want. This is technically speaking, part of scaling, but I would treat it as part of a separate PRO, because you can also scale your commercial NAS by paying more money, but you may not be able to configure it as you can with the DIY solution, which offers more flexibility (I know some commercial NAS allow you to use each disk individually as a share, instead of raid-ing them, but I'm not sure they allow for backups between them, that usually requires a separate storage - with the DIY solution you can use the same hardware with different disks for backup).
