@@garrenseifert790 The icon on the terminator helmet is Deathwatch. From what they've said it seems like the new series will follow a DW team made up by the marines we see in this teaser. Note for Kai : The chapter created by Syama has been canonized and is now and official Imperial Fist chapter as I understood it. The black and orange chapter are the Scythes of the Emperor.
Just looked it up and you 100% correct. They are the Retributors and they are cannon now. Feels nice knowing Syama is getting the reignition he deserves.
As far as Space marine factions/chapters are concerned, we see 5 different chapters. You are correct that the Retributors (the grey ones) are syama's personal group. but for the others we have Retributors (Imperial fist successor) Scythes of the Emperor (Ultramarine successor) - black and orange Angels Vermillion (Blood Angel successor) - red with black helm and skull in the blood drop. Sons of Medusa (Iron Hands successor) - green Mortifactor (Ultramarine successor) - black and white with the skull helm/shoulder. These are some deep cut chapters, not many people know them, so don't feel like you should know them.
Imagine creating such a badass fan animation with your own fan made chapter that not only they hire you to make several official works but also officially Canonized your creation into the universe.
I'm so glad we're seeing chapters few know of. Not that the big chapters are boring, but it's a nice change of pace. I'm especially glad to see some Iron Hands representation.
Precisely, all of us that were touting that he had been locked in the dungeon never to see the light of day again were so wrong, and not just for this, but he was obviously working hard on other Warhammer projects, and his efforts show (in the Space Marine 2 cinematic, in Secret Level) and now in an Astartes sequel. They are MOST DEFINITELY utilizing him and backing him fully. Very awesome to see.
EXACTLY. I don't get why people still think they hired him just to silence him. Richard Boylan got taken in for Angels of Death and they let Helsreach stay up. The guy behind The Lord Inquisitor wasn't so lucky, they just up and told him to cease. If they wanted that for syama they woulda doen the same.
Once again you prove why you're my favorite "reaction" channel. So many fascinating things to add. I personally love that this video was as long as it was
Also, the chapters that appear in order are the Retributors (Syama's chapter that he made), Scythes of the Emperor, Blood Angels or potentially a successor chapter like the Angels Vermillion, Sons of Medusa, and finally the Mortifactors with the skull paint
Wow, you uploaded this video very quickly. I was thinking you might do one in a week or so. Great job, Kai, keep it up. Always a pleasure to watch your technical breakdowns.
You will notice with the tanks (predators) the foreground tank as a mold seam along the barrel as one would have with a model kit. The old predator kits were notorious for that seam. The background tank, after hitting the debris, fires a missile. Little details.
The last guys are the Mortifactors. They paint skulls on their helmets or straight up attach real skulls to them. The green ones are Sons of Medusa and already people had mentioned the Scytes of the Emperor.
Your reactions are always so real and refreshing. I feel like I can actually understand something thats WAY outside of my field because you put it so well, while keeping it entertaining. Love your content mate, came for star citizen, stayed for warhammer!
You have a keen eye to notice the skull in the blood drop. That means this guy is an angels vermilion, successor chapter of the blood angels. Green guys are sons of medusa, successor chapter of the iron hands.
with the 3 scythes last standing against the homragaunts the foreground dude is missing a pauldron on his left, and it shows the under armour plate that you see sometimes when they raise their arm and the pauldron raises and the back left dude is missing a leg
Great analysis. I work with lighting and lighting around people and have noted as well that green colors can make people and characters look like they're a witch at a cauldron. It fits the corrupted landscape of 40k so well though.
1 year since I stumbled over this channel. I might even have been one of the many who recommended Astartes I. So cool to see what a journey this channel has had. Cheers to many more.
Regarding the first scene: Syama has used 2d assets in animation before. In astartes, shots showing ships from a distance were 2d ships made to move across the screen.
So friggen hyped for this. Syama has a great understanding of the IP, is a massive fan himself and his eye for epic scenes and story telling is simply amazing. Let's hope that not much corporate BS interferes 😅
Seemed like he alone sent 40k on a great path and brought many new eyes to the lore. The developer of space marine 2 even said he used the first astartes as a reference and inspiration to build from. Games workshop are likely gonna be copying his style a lot in the future hopefully.
You always add so much to the content, it's nuts! I find all of these little intricacies so cool to learn about, keep at it man, you are *the* best reaction channel because you teach and you add.
You really have the best analysis channel, we can feel the passion and all those little things you notice and point out really amaze me. Thank you for this detailed breakdown, I learned a lot and it made me appreciate this trailer even more than I did before !
Don't know if you noticed but at 1:43, the second Predator tank in the background lets loose with a Hunter Killer Missile (40k equivalent of a guided 'TOW' missile ) just as the shot comes to a close :P . Real nice little detail.
The terminator at the end has an Inquisition logo on his forehead, which most likely means that we will see the grey knights at some point. (A highly secretive chapter of space marines where every single member is a psyker, most are given terminator armour and they primarily deal with really serious Daemon threats against the imperium. They might also have been created from the Geneseed that came directly from the Emperor himself, the most powerful psyker in the imperium of man and the first perpetuals) Interestingly, there don't appear to be any primaris marines in this one, which is what Titus is in Space Marine 2 and the secret level episode. That being said, just because primaris marines exist, doesn't mean that every chapter is racing to creating primaris marines, given that there are apparently some suspected downsides to "Crossing the Rubicon" (Going through the surgeries that are required to become a primaris marine) So maybe this series will focus more on chapters that didn't really go down that path, or they will all take place pre-primaris. (Wouldn't it be amazing if this guy made a Horus heresy story?) Also, Chaos Astartes teaming up with Adeptes Astartes? Heresy. (they never would, I mean Space marines barely team up with more agreeable and "good" races, like the Eldar and Tau, it happens, but it's an allegiance of convenience where they generally focus on the worse enemy and then they fight each other afterwards) Also I think the Tyrannid at ~35 mins might be a Genestealer. I would also like to know the chapter of the marine that is stabbing the possible Genestealer in the face over and over. They look like they have the punisher skull on their pauldron, but I'm having trouble finding it in the wiki. Maybe they are a faction like the skull reapers or Silver Skulls but with a slightly reimagined logo? Or maybe it's a new fanmade chapter that they are introducing.
They should give this guy the budget and freedom to create a series or a feature film. With the recent uptick in popularity for Warhammer 40K, it should be a sure-fire hit. He definitively got the chops.
If you're thinking of hitting Warhammer+ for ASTARTES II when it drops, you should also check out "Pariah Nexus" and "The Tithes". There are other ones I like such as "Iron Within" but you can feel that they are earlier projects
Became a huge fan of yours after seeing your Star Citizen related reacts and after seeing Astartes 2 trailer, I wondered what you'd make of this and the first Astartes. Keep up the awesome work!
I've covered Astartes too, link in the description box. Thank you for being here man and commenting, I very much appreciate it and love having you here. I must get to that Star Engine trailer, maybe come back next week for that one.
It appears that Syama Pedersen is back. The first Astartes was internet sensation, getting hundreds of millions of views across all platforms. GW was smart, they hired Syama Pedersen and from what we see here, it looks like they gave him a huge check and let him be the lead of the Astartes II project. It's great to see an IP like Warhammer see what people like and what draws them in, like Syama Pedersen work, and then capitalize on it. Notice at 33:10 the words in the background on the wall. Clever, because in the Warhammer universe "The Emperor Protects" not "The Emperor Forgets"
There's a good narrative reason why the Space Marines go from generic to specific in those face shots: it's the whole premise of Deathwatch. Deathwatch is composed of marines from almost every chapter imaginable coming together for a unified purpose. One team (usually 5-10 marines) will have 5-10 different chapters represented. Usually, Space Marines are very loyal to their chapter, its tactics, and its doctrines. In the Deathwatch, they have to learn to fight as a unified force despite their differences. Good teams have to learn the strengths and weaknesses of both themselves and their fellow marines to leverage them against their enemies. So from a storytelling perspective, it shows what Deathwatch is: marines of desperate chapters might be very different, but at the end of the day, they're still Space Marines, and combining their strengths makes them even stronger. Also, I'm so happy that they went with successor chapters instead of First Founding chapters. It helps to sell the idea that Space Marines are more than their founders.
To my eye, the blue energy on pauldron of Retributor (think that's how they were called) and transition from Retributor to marine with sickles insignia on second showcase looks like the energy used by the creature/artifact in first Astartes.
The chapters shown are Retributors (his homebrew chapter made canon and imperial fist successors), Scythes of the emperor (black/yellow but looks orange from the lighting and ultramarine successors), Mortifactors (skull icon and ultramarine successors), Angels vermillion (Blood angels successors), and sons of medusa (iron hands successors)
Your reaction to the first Astartes was like "I have no idea what's going on" This time "Oh a Tau, Oh deathwatch" You've been drawn in like the marines get drawn into the warp in Astartes 1
I've already watched the lore breakdowns. Always enjoy your breakdowns, they make me appreciate all these minute technical details of the animation itself. Great vid as always
Sound, sound, sound! The sound design that Sayama uses is phenomenal and the music and sound design from Secret Level were next level. It always grounds everything you see, and in this case, feel.
This shown compilation of footage in teaser was noted on official site to be specifically made for teaser trailer and will not be a part of actual series, just an introduction to the characters that will take part in it. Probably this was already even made 3-5 years ago by Syama alone before he opened this new studio. So that being said, quality should be up a notch there compared to this. You can notice Secret Level's detail and quality was actually an endgame level work and this teaser feels raw. And yes, it is a Deathwatch Terminator at the end. That hints us that all they will be a part of some Deathwatch Squad, probably they might breach again the voidship that sucked and teleported their brothers away from Astartes 1 considering the lighting Terminator shown in (maybe he just loves it(it really looks so epic)), I am guessing. Or maybe they completely ignore previous plotline and do something else, considering there is biggest ever known Tyranid Fleet cruising in the lore now. Chaos Space Marines are not always hardcore on their looks, main point is that they traitors and that's all. Props for your consistency bro, I watch almost every video, and I am waiting for the rest of God of War. You smashed this breakdown, everything you assumed was on-point.
Deathwatch - yes, 100%. Also the quote "the shield that slays" is a direct reference to the Deathwatch, it is the name of a piece of artwork from one of their earlier books. We know from the article that all of this footage is for the trailer only - it's showing a snapshot of each of the five marines with their original chapters, before they join the Deathwatch. So it'll be interesting to theorise about what the "mission" will be when they all come together in their Kill Team. My bet (or wish, ha!) is that it's a boarding action or Space Hulk / Blackstone Fortress mission and they will all be in Terminator Armour. Wouldn't it be neat if they were being called in to investigate what happened to the original squad of marines from part 1? We know the Inquisition had it's hands in that one.
Was waiting for your reaction. Very nice. 10:40 made me laugh. As if anyone would unite with chaos against a bigger enemy. There IS no bigger enemy (except maybe tyranids, but even then...).
7:00 remember the astroid field and the space ships, in the first one were 2d as well. The layers really give it a 3dfeel, a bit like a shadow box. 25:25 Wait are they all 2d elements? 27:55 You can even see the blurry stealth suit moving between the columns 30:40 I love that he took the time to sculpt the face so he looks like Rogal Dorn, whose genes were used to make him. The triangle designates him as a heavy weapons trooper 32:00 The underlighting of his helmet really underscores the threatening aspect. 33:30 Yeah, they are hero coded, but one of them is carrying a guy b y the head XD 33:58 Dramatic hero cape. This guy gets it, when you have a cool cape like that, find a gust of wind and do a Dramatic swirl. 35:25 They are called the mortifactors and they are loyal, if pretty brutal. They are recruited from a world of stone age level people with some rather gruesome beliefs regarding skulls and the consumption of human flesh.
35:30 Mortifactors, chapter from a feral world, practice cannibalism, they're a loyalist chapter but yeah... Also interesting we get a marine from the Scythes ofvthe Emperor since they're basically wiped out by the Nids along with the Lamenters.
Some fucking guy spent literal years of his life crafting one of the greatest representations of Space Marines to date. It was so good that GW themselves went "come work for us, immediately." Syama Pedersen, you are a legend.
Green isn't his key. It's the use of color in the highlights which gives contrast to the darkly colored marines and war machines. It's to invoke both dirt/grim and the violence of it all while being mysterious.
36:09 The most badass up skirt angle ever. Think about it downward angle often used as someones perspective looking up at the point of interest. Only less panty shots and more chainswords as Big E intended glorious anime writers take notes lol.
On the topic of the first image looking 2D, I think that's a stylistic choice. The first image of Astartes 1 is of the ship they launch from, and that also looks very 2D
let's hope they give him enough creative freedom, I really hope so. some people are saying most of the shown footage is actually older from before he was hired by GW, not sure if that's a good or bad sign I guess it depends if you're an optimist or pessimist.
Could be that they had him working on other things, and then SM2 landed and its episode of Secret Level absolutely dunked on the rest of that show. Then someone got smart and said "hey Sayama, what else you got?"
Not a perfect lore nerd, but I believe the green marines you were asking about are the Sons of Medusa. A successor chapter of the Iron Hands (very Adeptus Mechanicus leaning/aligned space marines)
the astartes creator did a trailer beforehand and its 4 yrs ago (its in youtube you can find it), its almost the same but with non canon marines, now games workshop tweaked it and maked it canon marines, and ofcourse made it much beautiful.
about fukin time always love your reactions and breakdowns. but yes that was a chaos and a chaos army cause that's a khorne symbol but my favourite part is that tyranid scene with the syths that guy doesn't have a leg laying down and just fighting till death
When I first saw the length of this, I was wondering how the hell you make 37 minute video on 1 and a half minute trailer. I guess this is how, pretty in-depth.
with the predators and the hormagaunts running the predators are going fast as fuck rhinos use the same chassis, engine, everything but the turret those homragaunts are keeping up with a rhino they are BOOKING IT!
The quality is once again off the charts, and yes, there is quite a bit of 2D, but it looks fantastic, i don't care hwo you do it, what you use, if it works and loks great and has the right vibe, that is all that matters. We see more chapters, more factions, vehicles, i can't wait, but it'll be a while. Orks, Tyranids, T'au. I wonder how many episodes there will be, what the story is, but come on man, it's clear this guy can make entire movies and we'd watch the shit out of it. We'd probably watch it 3 times in a row. 10:07 It is Chaos, older patern suits, from the Horus Heresy perhaps, although some Mechanicus world also went Dark Mechanicus, and they of course might have picked up some things from slain Space marines with newer tech, they'd most likely be using more older stuff, keep repairing that, if they need to, since some will have quite a bit of warp flowing through making them kind of meld with the tech, grow together. 12:30 the cutting off of the top also makes it a bit more sinister, and mysterious, makes you wonder a bit, though there isn't much to wonder about, it works. 13:45 i like the homage shot. He could have EXACTLY matched it up, but didn't, and i like it. It is not going from one to the other as in the same, no, things changed slightly, we're further on in time, slight changes, i like it.
Like normal with my videos, first I [REACT] to the content in full, no stopping and then afterwards, that is when I do a Filmmakers [BREAKDOWN].

We know the Inquisition had it's hands in that one.
i would pay for that quality full length movies, i can dream sigh
Great breakdown and great to see some news on Astartes coming back!
27:55 You can even see the blurry stealth suit moving between the columns
30:40 I love that he took the time to sculpt the face so he looks like Rogal Dorn, whose genes were used to make him.
The triangle designates him as a heavy weapons trooper
32:00 The underlighting of his helmet really underscores the threatening aspect.
33:30 Yeah, they are hero coded, but one of them is carrying a guy b y the head XD
33:58 Dramatic hero cape.
It was so good that GW themselves went "come work for us, immediately."
Syama Pedersen, you are a legend.
33:01 *THE EMPEROR FORGETS*
They have such a high bar to reach and I'm certain they'll absolutely smash it!
Another great video. So many fantastic insights and I love your enthusiasm so much Kai. Keep it up!
I was hoping you would get to this soon. I'm so emperor damned excited for this
I love your reacts, please keep them coming!
I'll certainly try
The Marines in green are the Raptors, I believe.
Green isn't his key. It's the use of color in the highlights which gives contrast to the darkly colored marines and war machines. It's to invoke both dirt/grim and the violence of it all while being mysterious.
DANG this looks good. I was worried they had just kind of...ended the Astartes project.
36:09 The most badass up skirt angle ever.
Think about it downward angle often used as someones perspective looking up at the point of interest.
Only less panty shots and more chainswords as Big E intended glorious anime writers take notes lol.
Clicked the vid to watch a reaction. Left the vid ready to film my masterpiece.
On the topic of the first image looking 2D, I think that's a stylistic choice. The first image of Astartes 1 is of the ship they launch from, and that also looks very 2D
Thank you for the breakdown, I love hearing about it, even if my interest doesn't lie in filmmaking.
YES KAI! yyyyeeeEEEEEESSSSS!!
let's hope they give him enough creative freedom, I really hope so.
some people are saying most of the shown footage is actually older from before he was hired by GW, not sure if that's a good or bad sign I guess it depends if you're an optimist or pessimist.
Could be that they had him working on other things, and then SM2 landed and its episode of Secret Level absolutely dunked on the rest of that show. Then someone got smart and said "hey Sayama, what else you got?"
Love to see a professional take
The Emperor does not forgets!
Flippin love your videos dude. Always cheer me up 🙌
the orange and black is scythes of the emperor i think and the skull face is the mortifactors
Man, I love your growth in interest in WH… Keep up the good work.!
Thank you brother!
Could see you being the Gordon ramsay of film making," look at this, there's shit on the lens."😂😂
Sounds like a blast mate!!
Chaos divided on his pauldron. Chaos marine
Love the break down!
Can I ask, did you watch the Reaction first? I feel people just skip the intros and miss the actual Reaction part.
Not a perfect lore nerd, but I believe the green marines you were asking about are the Sons of Medusa. A successor chapter of the Iron Hands (very Adeptus Mechanicus leaning/aligned space marines)
Tactical dreadnought armour terminator with a inquisition insignia on it
you are correct. that is a chaos astartes. Looks to be black legion. Basically Chaos ultramarines
the astartes creator did a trailer beforehand and its 4 yrs ago (its in youtube you can find it), its almost the same but with non canon marines, now games workshop tweaked it and maked it canon marines, and ofcourse made it much beautiful.
The angels of death have returned
I enjoyed that. You know your shit, Mate. Subscribed. 😊
Thank you!
Kai's favorite word: dutch angle
Power Status too!
completely random, but i dig the capes on spaces marines, it just looks badass
Thanks, Kai! I'd love to see your breakdown of the Death Stranding trailers!
I will be covering that game eventually. It's on the list!
dear god can I please just go into a coma until 2026 I can't wait a whole year
i wish he kept the lamenters in
Nice vid. You sound like you love what you do 👍
I love anything filmmaking and telling stories!
about fukin time always love your reactions and breakdowns. but yes that was a chaos and a chaos army cause that's a khorne symbol but my favourite part is that tyranid scene with the syths that guy doesn't have a leg laying down and just fighting till death
When I first saw the length of this, I was wondering how the hell you make 37 minute video on 1 and a half minute trailer. I guess this is how, pretty in-depth.
with the predators and the hormagaunts running
the predators are going fast as fuck
rhinos use the same chassis, engine, everything but the turret
those homragaunts are keeping up with a rhino
they are BOOKING IT!
How cool would it be if one day you could interview Syama about his process?
Sounds like a cool idea!
lol this man made a 40 min vid reaction to a 2 min teaser? lemme grab my popcorn...
For the records i like that the chaos space marines armor is mismatched, I really dislike the chaos space marines backpacks.
Why am I only now hearing that there's a 2?!
