Youre not alone in hating Umbridge, even Stephen King described her as the "best make-believe villain to come along since Hannibal Lecter", praising her as a deeply unsettling antagonist.

The reason that there's a new defence against the dark arts teacher each year, is because they can only hold a position for a year, due to the fact that when Voldemort left school, he came back wanting to do something which you'll find out later, but during that time he applied for defence against the dark odds and obviously Dumbledore said no so he cursed the position so that people could only hold it for a year until he dies.

The Goblet of Fire film has a different ending from the book. In the book, after Barty Jr is exposed, Fudge shows up at Hogwarts with a dementor who performs "the kiss" on Crouch (the only one who knows Voldemort's plans), which ends his life. Fudge is unwilling to listen to Dumbledore, who finally tells Fudge that they have "reached a parting of the ways." This is why Fudge is out to undermine Dumbledore's reputation and Harry's credibility. He's become so fearful and paranoid of losing his job as Minister of Magic, that he effectively ignores his own responsibilities to the magical community. It takes seeing Voldemort with his own eyes that forces him to accept reality.

Regarding Lucius Malfoy attempting the killing course in the 2nd movie: Jason Isaacs, the actor who played Lucius, said he didn't know it was the killing curse when he improvised it. The story goes that Jason didn't know any spells so he asked a grip if he knew any. The grip only knew avada kedavra so that's what he used.

This. It's a quirk of the movie making process rather than something actually in the story itself (screenplay OR books). The book passage itself is:
"Lucius Malfoy stood frozen, staring at the elf. Then he lunged at Harry.
“You’ve lost me my servant, boy!”
But Dobby shouted, “You shall not harm Harry Potter!”
There was a loud bang, and Mr. Malfoy was thrown backward."

    Fun fact:
The guy at 7:50 in the elevator didn't have a dragon in his box, but a fire-breathing chicken. The book mentions that this guy works with some "experimental magic" :P
And yes, Harry and Luna were the only two in the group who could see the Thestrals. For all the others, it appeared like they were flying on literally nothing, which was a weird experience for sure.

When filming the scene where Sirius passes into The Veil, Daniel Radcliffe "inspired" his outcry through the memory of a relative that had passed only a few days prior. All his agony and despair was sent into it it made several actresses instantly cry. The director thought it was so horrible he could and would not include the audio in this movie, hence why we get the slo mo scene. If you pay close attention even Helena Bonham Carter was affected (as the brief sadness witnessed on her face) before she switched back to her evil role and smiled when she fled the room.
Now regarding the lore, Dumbledore was at that time the strongest mage in the entire world (you will understand later how and why) ... that's why Tom Riddled thought he had an ounce of respect for this _capable pure-blood_ , but it was in fact something he preferred to hide: fear !

I think what makes the death of Sirius even more dark is when you realize how spells work in that world. Similar to the Petronus charm there is an intent that has to be reached inside the witch or wizard casting it. Meaning that in order to cast Avada Kedavra successfully they have to mean it. They have to have zero doubt in their mind that they want the target dead. And that was his own kin as well. I have heard some people say if there is a spell like that why not use it all the time especially for the dark wizards but it's because they don't understand how much it would take and how final it has to be for them to even be able to cast it. Helena Bonham Carter does such an amazing job at being evil. I have really enjoyed your reactions to these. I know you were a bit worried about doing these on your own but I have really been looking forward to each one. Thank you.

What I love about the training bits: Remus taught Harry "Expecto Patronum" when it was just the two of them, in secret, with gloom hanging over them both. When Harry taught the others, they were all together. Supporting one another. It's easier to be happy with your friends nearby. And they're succeeding, which builds confidence, too.
Which proves Harry's a good teacher.

It's one great things about these movies. But it does pose a problem for the children of now. They are old enough to watch the first movie or two, but not the entire series as the movies get darker and darker and have much more aldult themes. It's hard to tell a 9 year old that they can't binge Harry Potter. Somthing a 9 year when they first started didn't have to go through. They grew up as the movies were released.

After Harry Potter you could always go through the Fantastic Beasts movies. They are in the same world but different and even though its not quite the same meaning you might feel a little post viewing syndrome when this series is done, the Fantastic Beasts still has connections to the world you come to know in these movies. I still really enjoyed them but at first it was hard to get over the fact that its not Harry Potter.

Sirius doesn't treat them like kids, because he is pretty much a kid himself. He never got the chance to grow up, because he spent his entire adult life in prison. The adults sense it too, because they never trust Sirius with anything important. It's one of those little character details that made Harry Potter worth all the hype it got back in the day. And it's a shame that JK Rowling is no longer capable of this level of insight.

Good catch that it was Percy Weasley. After he left Hogwarts he went to work at the ministry. Being very ambitious and a little ashamed of his family, he was quick to criticize Harry and try to tell Ron to stay away from him. Everything led to him being estranged from his family for quite a long time. This only one of the things the books have so much more info about.
And Cho wasn’t really the one to betray them. It was her friend Marietta.

"This connection between me and Voldemort... what if the reason for it is that I am becoming more like him? I just feel so angry, all the time. What if after everything that I've been through, something's gone wrong inside me? What if I'm becoming bad?"
"I want you to listen to me very carefully, Harry. You're not a bad person. You're a very good person, who bad things have happened to. Besides, the world isn't split into good people and Death Eaters. We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Evanna Lynch.
Lost In Adaptation Fact: The character of Nigel (William Melling) was created strictly for the movie; he does not appear in the books. However, he combines elements of The Creevey Brothers.
Automobile Enthusiast Fact: During filming, Alan Rickman banned Matthew Lewis and Rupert Grint from being within five meters of his new BMW, because during the making of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire (2005), they spilled a milkshake in his car.
Looney For Luna Fact: Evanna Lynch beat 15,000 girls for the role of the beloved Luna Lovegood. The radish earrings worn by Luna Lovegood were made by Lynch. In the scene where Luna Lovegood is barefoot in the forest, Evanna Lynch said that it was fifty degrees during filming, so her feet were really cold. She said the director offered to have a stunt double be barefoot for her, but she declined.
Testing One Two Three Fact: J.K. Rowling had been a schoolteacher before writing the books, and this movie featured some references to the British educational system. From the mid 50's up to 1987, students at age sixteen were given Ordinary Level (O-Level) Exams in all of their major subjects, for which they can receive their General Certificates of Education. This corresponds to the Ordinary Wizarding Level (O.W.L.) Exams given at Hogwarts. Students who planned to go on to university stayed on two more years to take their Advanced Level (A-Level) Exams, which roughly correspond to Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Test (N.E.W.T.) Exams.

Though I see some comments confirming your suspicion that that was a Weasley (Percy) behind Fudge, I'd like to clarify why, since the movie doesn't. In the books, it's made very apparent that Percy is obsessed with following rules and a little power-hungry, evident by how he is very pompous about any sort of status he acquires (ie. prefect or head boy). As soon as he graduates, he gets a job at the Ministry of Magic, and gets so wrapped up in it that he casts the rest of the Weasleys aside, blaming Arthur for the family being so poor, and turning full-on Ministry puppet.

I call him Haygrid or Haahgrid depending on my mood haha. And I don't recall anything to indicate Lucius specifically would've killed Harry in book 2's "you've lost me my servant, boy" scene, I guess it's possible but it's hard to imagine him getting away with that, and even in that moment I don't think he'd lost ALL self control.

Something that’s not explained in the movie Sirius actually has 3 cousins - the Black Sisters:
    - Bellatrix LeStange who tortured Neville’s parents to insanity and killed Sirius
    - Andromeda Tonks who was disinherited by the family for marrying a Mogleborn whizard. Nymphadora Tonks is their daughter, she is a rare Metamorphmagus- born with the ability to change her appearance by will.
    - and Narcissa Malfoy - Draco’s mother and wife of Lucius.

I say this every time someone watches OotP without reading the books, but please go back and read them if you enjoy the series; you are doing yourself a massive disservice not to. One of my favorite book details that was omitted form the movie was Harry's trip to St. Mungo's Hospital after Mr. Weasley's attack. You get so much more great stuff about Neville and his parents (the moment with the candy wrapper still makes me tear up every time I read it), but you also get to catch up with Gilderoy Lockhart after his memory charm backfired. It's quite the series of events.

The battles are fun and the final confrontation between Dumbledore and Voldemort is probably the best magical battle ever, of all time.

Actually Lucy is killing Harry was a movie only thing it didn't happen in the book, what happened is that the actor hadn't read the books and he asked someone who had read the books for a random spell they told him that one so he used it, because I guess the person who wrote the script forgot to write in the actual spell uses in the book, this actually happens in a lot of the movies where they use the spells incorrectly as well as use the wrong spells for stuff which creates a lot of confusion for movie viewers that don't exist in the books because the movies change things, making it confusing. You'll see this with future movies as well, another example would be the Expelliarmus spell which is supposed to disarm your opponent, but they use it for anything which is wrong, like for example to disarm someone means that they're one flicks out of their hand, they've used it correctly maybe twice throughout this franchise the rest of the time you'll see that people fall on their butts they crash through walls they do all sorts of crazy things when they're not supposed to do with that spell, there are tons of other spells people could've used that we see mentioned even in that second movie when they use Expelliarmus, the movie is just trying to make everything look bigger and cooler without actually understanding what the spells do and what they're supposed to be used for which is very frustrating as a fan of Harry Potter, because it means that movie only viewers get a misrepresentation of spells and how they're supposed to be properly used. There are actually a lot of plot holes in future films because of this, where a lot of movie viewers don't understand why something happened and say like oh that was a mistake when in reality it's not a mistake it's just that it's the wrong spell that they use if that makes sense, but yeah it's very very frustrating seeing that as someone who read the books. I really hope that once they have sorted out the TV show, although they probably will make the same mistakes as the movies or maybe other bad mistakes, who knows, but if they can get it right one of the things I really hope that they change is looking at the spells used in the books and how to correctly use said spells in the show, so that hopefully they don't make the same mistakes made in the movies and people better understand which spells are which, as the movies leave out a lot of important details from the books as well and without that context it can be confusing to know what's actually going on, because without the context of certain scenes or how spells are supposed to be used, like I said it can leave viewers feelingdisjointed or like there's some sort of plot hole or something unfortunately.
Sorry if my comment doesn't make sense, I'm officially impaired and new speech to text which takes what I say and turns into words I also have to speak out the punctuation, so it can be frustrating, the font on TH-cam is just too small I can't really edit it very well either so with speech to text it just takes what I say and turn it into words but with the Harry Potter words it doesn't always quite understand spells or things like that so I hope my comment makes sense, but if not that's why.

In the books, they do describe powerful casts of spells having secondary effects. When the three students Expelliarmus'd Snape in book 3, it threw him so hard it knocked him out. They do exaggerate it a bit more in the film of course.
I appreciate the note about Lucius and Avada Kadavra though. I completely forgot he did that in the film and had no idea what she was talking about haha. That's just sloppy dialogue and makes Lucius seem more reckless and foolish than he's supposed to be. Not that the films really have time to care about the tertiary characters anyway.

@@jerodast yeah I know it's not perfect, I just wanted to do my best to explain that like the movies didn't really care about the spells or the actual like accuracy of different characters and the magical world like they did a pretty good job I'm just curious to see what they do with the show because I think it would be better to show it more accurately, I know what you mean about like some spells having secondary like things but even then like there's like different purposes for different spells like in the Doolingclub in the second film like they use a lot of different spells like people over and like you know that kind of stuff where Expelliarmus supposed to decide there are other things that can kind of do but like the way that it's shown in the movies I feel like a lot of the spells are massively over exaggerated, to the point where a lot of things don't make sense and more importantly than that spells are also misuse like they use the wrong spell for different things as well which is also very frustrating so yeah.

There is no magic or fantastic creatures in it, in the summer special effects are really crappy, but I assure you there are no better-written characters anywhere else, and I promise you cross my heart, you are going to laugh and cry even more than during the Harry Potter films. In this one is only 6 hours long. You can find it in a two-part version of four-part version or a six-part version. The script and book on which it is based were written by Larry McMurtry. The author who beautifully sings Texas, and the one who was once hailed as the only male writer who can write a woman. And if that is not enough, let me add just this: Danny Glover, Robert Duvall, and Tommy Lee Jones. If I could watch only one title to the end of my days and it couldn't be "Friends" it would definitely be "Lonesome Dove".

If you're looking for something in the fantasy vein to watch, I have to put a vote in for the TV show The Magicians. It's sort of like Harry Potter goes to grad school crossed with the Chronicles of Narnia, but it's much darker and more adult in theme. It had five seasons, too, so it could be a lot of content, but if that's too much commitment y'all could always just react to the first episode or first season and go from there. Also, the show Severance is amazing and I'd love to see y'all react to it-- but beware! The less you know about the series, the better! iirc the Lucius attemting the killing curse was a major mess up on filming... that scene isn't in the books... they had only a rough draft that JKR accepted... the intent for the scene was Lucius losing his temper and doing some curse of the kind students use on each other... when they filmed the actor made up a spell by putting a latin touch on the classical "adabra kadabra" (german spelling not sure in english) the killing curse... (avadra kadavra) wasn't public knowlege at the time of filming so when that bit of knowleg came up later... they realized they messed up

English usually goes "Abra Kadabra" or "Abracadabra".
The Unforgivable Curses were introduced in book 4, released year 2000. The _first_ film was released in 2001. "Avada Kadavra" was definitely well-known within Harry Potter lore when the second film was made.

So @@jerodast is correct, the spell was well known at the time of filming.
Also, sorry mate, your story about what and why the actor said what he said isn't true either. The real story comes directly from an interview with Jason Isaacs, the actor who played Lucius. He said that he didn't know any spells so he asked a grip if he knew any. The grip only knew avada kedavra so that's what he used, not knowing it was the killing curse.
For the interview, look for "the untold story of Jason Isaacs killing curse"
Where did you hear your story?

Now Graup. Here is one of my more important beef with the movie makers. Hagrid is half Giant, and so is Lady Maxine. They are both played by humans and have human facial features. Just buy some trickery and some practical effects and the use of another person they're made to look much taller than all the others. So I think it is safe to assume that the Giants are just much bigger people with you know regular human facial features. Now Graup looks like a cross of human and a troll (he's definitely half way towards the one from movie 1). I would be extremely happy if he was played by a regular human actor just with a kind of stupid face... Kris Marshall has mastered playing idiots. He, digitally or perspectively enlarged, would have been perfect in this role.

This one gets a lot of hate because so much from the books was cut. But (1) most of that didn‘t really serve the story in the first place, they could have cut even more, and (2) they made use of the limited time with the brilliantly done transitions where Umbridge is walking around the school. It‘s a creative way to show, not tell.

@@meganega123 Multiple scenes are inexplicable in the cuts they make, in this one and all of them starting with 4. Why include brief mentions of Neville's backstory but then cut the most fundamental scene in that arc? Because people would complain if they cut that thread entirely, so they give a half-assed version that didn't need a whole new set, a token gesture. Why include the cartoonish sneering Vernon scene but not the plot-relevant, complex Petunia reveal? It's inexplicable. There's plenty of bloat in the films. Just haphazardly chosen. "I didn't like those scenes anyway, they could've cut even more" is such an apologist, nonsense defense.

@@jerodast _typos due to voice recognition_
I would NEVER suggest to cut scenes because I don‘t like them. And I didn‘t. I said they didn‘t really serve the story. And that even more could have been cut. Which you seem to agree with, there is still bloat in the film to make room for other scenes. I wouldn‘t know which ones to put in, but there is room for it. And while not all choices were great, the film obviously cut a lot of bloat already. E. g. the story of Neville‘s parents adds to his character and to Bellatrix‘s etc., but we don’t need to see them in the hospital for that. Even more so since the mental ward in St. Mungo‘s is horrible anyway.
I would argue that we could start the film when Harry gets picked up by the Order, thus cutting the dementor attack and the silly Vernon scene although I like his „Justiccce“ line, then cutting the trial entirely, so going from Grimauldplace directly to King‘s Cross, and that already frees up a lot of time for other scenes. And of course film is a different medium. Every new place, every new character costs money. That‘s why they cut e. g. Marietta in this one or Charlie in Goblet of Fire. It costs nothing to write something into a story…
This will only be a rough outline, but the obvious choice would be of course to cut Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix entirely, and moving Voldemort‘s return and Harry‘s visions to Prisoners of Azkaban, to make room for that we cut Sirius and the marauders and the time travel entirely. Make Barty Crouch jr. the DatDA teacher, tricking Harry into the shrieking shack to get him to the graveyard. Then end with Harry returning and telling Dumbledore. Cue Halfblood Prince as the 4th installment where we cut all the romance and a tiny bit of Voldemort‘s backstory to make him a more fitting threat. Then comes Deathly Hallows as the 5th installment, with less camping and less dead side characters, but Harry stays dead after his sacrifice. Neville kills Nagini, everyone takes down Voldemort as a team effort. End Credits. Alternatively, they use their brains in Prisoners of Azkaban and stun Wormtail, then bring him to the castle, clear Sirius‘ name, and Harry moves in with him. Wham, bam, trilogy done. And it‘s still about love, friendship, family, and belonging. And that‘s just two possibilities of many to cut down and streamline.
Boy, do I love redlining. 😁
