Road to War: Ukraine on the Eve of Russia's Invasion | Foreign Correspondent

  • As Putin's army rolls in, Ukraine is fighting back. In the weeks before the invasion, we visit Ukraine and the Russian-backed separatist region to understand the causes of what could be Europe's biggest conflict since WW2.
The world is watching on in shock as Putin’s army invades Ukraine. Despite months of Russian military build-up on Ukraine’s borders, many thought Putin would never dare to try and crush his neighbour’s independence with military might.
Now these two countries, with a shared history spanning centuries, are fighting each other in the streets of Ukrainian cities. How did it come to this? In the weeks leading up to the invasion, Foreign Correspondent explores both sides of this dangerous conflict.
Reporter David Lipson travels across Ukraine to find a country whose identity has been forged in the heat of the eight-year war between Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists occupying regions in the east.
Former Russia correspondent Eric Campbell works with a local crew to gain rare access inside the separatist region. He speaks with locals whose loyalties lies with Russia and who believe Ukrainians are Nazis.
Starting in the capital Kyiv, Lipson meets a young mother who’s bearing the scars of the ongoing war in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine has lost some 14 000 lives in the conflict that began in 2014.
“At that moment we already understood who the enemy was and we just wanted to stop him from going further into our land,” says Viktoria, a former soldier, whose partner was killed by a landmine. “I am sure this war has definitely changed the country.”
As Lipson travels east towards the frontline, he discovers just how much the country has changed. Close to the separatist region, there are destroyed villages, their residents living under frequent shelling. One farmer has been cut off from his farmland. The young have fled. The old remain.
“My heart aches every time I turn on TV, for our soldiers. What did we do to deserve this?” cries one old woman, who is caring for her blind husband. “I was born in 1942, during the war, and I have to witness it again, the ninth year in a row.”
In Mariupol on the east coast, also close to the frontline, Lipson finds a city increasingly divided. Pro-Russians are suspicious of the Ukrainian government, pro-Ukrainians are preparing to take up arms.
Eric Campbell’s team takes us inside the separatist region of Donetsk. We meet a young woman who says she will never live under Ukrainian rule. “We can’t live in the same country as the Nazis. We can’t forgive all that we experienced through the years’, says Alexandra.
Days later, she evacuates into Russia, as Putin’s propaganda machine bombards the region with stories of Ukrainian saboteurs and aggression.
The courage and determination of ordinary Ukrainians to stand and fight the Russian invaders has stunned the world. But will it be enough hold back the Russian military?

Sanctions against Russia are justified but where were the sanctions when US invaded?
Major sport events are denying Russians. Okay. But where was this same response when US invades?
Companies like Apple, Disney and Warner Bros pulling out of Russia. Okay good. But did they do the same to US?
All the coverage of impact to Ukraine civilians. Okay show us that so we are aware. But where was the same coverage when US military were indiscriminately bombing Iraq. The impact to the children there?
This hypocrisy and bias needs to stop. US also needs to be held accountable and pay for their crimes.

@@eric5901 You have a very short memory if you're pretending we didnt see mass protests and bloody footage when the US went into Iraq. You must be 15 years old?
The February 15 (2003) protests against the US invasion was described by social movement researchers as "the largest protest event in human history". According to BBC News, between six and ten million people took part in protests in up to sixty countries over the weekend of 15 and 16 February. The difference however, unlike Russia, people didn't get locked up and intimidated for simply expressing their views.
As for companies withdrawing, uhhh Apple, Disney and Warner Bros are going to what? Pull out of their own country? lolll Seriously, think before you type you russian troll at Glavset.
Lastly, kind of the biggest point - Iraq is not America now. Iraq was not an annexation. They overthrew the dictator and now Iraq is a nation with it's own destiny in it's hands. But what is happening in Ukraine is the first annexation of a neighbouring country by a dictator since the Nazi's annexed Czechoslovakia.
Stop trying so hard to compare apples and oranges.

@@AZ2PM You seem to have a problem with me calling out hypocrisy and bias. And here you are brushing off the invasion of Iraq as if it was a success - "overthrew a dictator and now iraq is a nation with it's own destiny" - what kind of rubbish is that?
How many children were killed by US shelling? Iraq had a high literacy rate in the 90s before US invaded. It is now in the low 20s. US has been told by Iraq to LEAVE the country & do you know what the response was? US Treasury threatened to confiscate Iraq's foreign reserves ... is this the " nation with it's own destiny in it's hands" that you are talking about??? What rubbish. Most importantly who gives US the right to invade another country and overthrow governments? Libya, Iran, Syria are all the same circumstances. Kowtow to the US and if you don't they'll come for your head!
Why hasn't US athletes been banned from major sporting event??
Where are the sanctions on US companies??
What punishment has the US been given over it's invasion under the lie of WMD??? None.

Terrible journalism. It is a NATO invasion. Russia waited 7 years for Ukraine to follow the Minsk II agreement but they took no steps and continued to escalate nationalist violence with advanced weapons supplied by NATO. Now Russia is implementing Minsk II by force after violence escalate to a new level. Western cameras turn on only now because they can sell the idea of blaming Russia for the bombing that the Ukranian extreme nationalists are doing to their own country. All the western headlines are reversing the truth. I travel as an Australian frequently to Ukraine and Russia and saw the increasing anti-Russia propaganda and provocations increasing in scale each year from 1995 until now - and we just start reporting it now, but with diametrically opposite framing.

Vladimir Khabarov (07:58). Why isn't Foreign Correspondent protecting his identity? The program explicitly acknowledges how dangerous it can be for people to express pro-Russian views. He has already been beaten and interrogated thanks to these views. Surely airing them again (on a program likely watched by at least some Ukrainians who may harbour an interest in seeing him interrogated and/or harmed again) is irresponsible. Even if he did not request his identity be disguised, Foreign Correspondent should have ensured it was. Even now, this video could be edited in an attempt to protect him. ISIS formed and established their former Caliphate with the intention of one day conquering the whole world and forcing everyone to live in a Sharia state under a Reign of Terror just like the one they imposed in Syria and Iraq with it's attendant genocide of the Yazidi people. Would you like to live in a regime ruled by those so-called "freedom fighters"? I bet you wouldn't, but you like spouting off fine words on the Internet. I appeal to all kind, decent, sane, peaceful people of the planet. Whether you like this information or not, take it into consideration and think about it. European countries are our friends! Ukrainians are our brothers! Today, a very difficult situation has developed for the entire European space. You must understand that it was the United States that unleashed this confrontation. The leadership of the United States, European and many other countries, the criminal leadership of Ukraine knew 100% that Russia would never allow the NATO bloc to enter the territory of Ukraine. And if they knew, then they deliberately went for it !!! Two fraternal peoples pushed their foreheads together and now our people are dying there. After all, it turns out that for ordinary citizens of Ukraine, Russia is now really "attacked." And for Russia, this is a forced protective measure. It was necessary to urgently intervene, otherwise the army of Ukraine and the punitive nationalist battalions would have destroyed the people of Donbass, which had already suffered from shelling for 8 years. And then they would go to my native Crimea! Therefore, negotiations in Belarus will lead nowhere. How can you negotiate with "those" who work for the United States, for whom war is the main goal. It's like turning on two green traffic lights at an intersection. Now the United States is causing economic damage not only to Russia, but to the whole of Europe. The corrupt Ukrainian leadership will now stir up the confrontation to the last, instead of calling on people to lay down their arms. They are well aware of what awaits them. They understand that Russia came just for them! Russia has never attacked anyone in history, but only defended itself. Now it is very important to extinguish this blazing flame as soon as possible! But instead, the Europeans go to fight in Ukraine and supply weapons. Do you understand how this could end? Guess who will be in the black from everything that happens!? Thanks to whom your countries are populated by refugees? The United States bombed dozens of countries, dropped atomic bombs on peaceful cities! USA is the main enemy of the whole world! Do not blindly believe, figure it out! Disgusting, deceitful videos have flooded the internet. Millions of videos! We will show and prove to you the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forming a human barriers to block the Russian Army is insane too, it's a human shield. Fighting the mighty Army with molotov, what a joke. That's the mistake of Ukraine citizens electing a clown as their president. Civilians in Ukraine are the target of Russian Army cos Ukraine President blindly armed the civilians to fight the Russians. Huge numbers of civilian injured n killed, Ukrain president to be blamed.
