- Class A Oil Change How-To. I'll show you how to service a Class A diesel motorhome. From taking off the old filter to replacing and everything in-between. I use Donaldson filters and they are the best, IMO.
You'll notice I didn't change the trans filter. We travel, on average, 8,000 miles a year. I do a thorough service on the trans every 50k miles.

I have a 93 Cummins 8.3C 300HP engine and it's a real pain to add oil via the valve cover. I've always noticed the lower spout right below the compressor fan belt, but just wasn't 100% that was for oil. Looks like that's the opening you used to refill the oil, so that will make my life a lot easier using that now.
That's what I use !!
Thank you very much. Headed out back to do an oil change now.
Getting ready to hit the road this summer in our converted school bus with a Cummins 8.3. I'm getting ready to change all the filters and fluids later this spring. My wife was shocked at the cost of filters. Lol. Bus/Coach maintenance isn't cheap, but cheaper than repairs from neglect. Lol.
I've been using Donaldson filters from Amazon they're very reasonable and the fuel filter eliminates the clear section which likes to leak !! Also check and see if you have a small filter by the injector pump !!
Once again a two wheeled brother with good mechanical sense. Came for the video stayed when I saw the sweatshirt.....
#oldschool like me!
We're fun to watch, us old scooter trash !!
@@EconomicRefugeesRV I hear that..... My video would be full of beeping though, I have a big mouth. I'll be changing fluid in my Allison and my Cat tomorrow. I was watching videos on the Allison because I haven't worked on those yet and I did not want to miss anything important the oil change I can do with my eyes closed but I saw your video I thought what the hell he looks normal to me! Hahaha
Wish me luck I'll be cussing tomorrow!
You've got it !!
Fumoto oil change valves instead of a bolt in the bottom of the oil pan. Used on heavy equipment for many years and I put them on all my passenger vehicles- way cleaner to drain and you have a quick and easy shut off if you need it. Not expensive. Good for you and thanks for posting. Love your massive black toolbox for the road!
It works great !!
Oil filter leaked last time - possible reason. I always wipe the sealing surface for the oil filter on the engine block before installing the new one. The old oil tends to get on the sealing surface and is contaminated with small crud. That will stop you from getting a great seal.
Cardboard works great on your knees and back! Nice choice of filters.
Are used to work for the Boeing company building commercial jetliners and I used to give myself tours around the different areas of the plant and I noticed Donaldson filtration on commercial jet liners this is six and a row gym again hey you’re doing a good job man I’d let you work on my stuff anytime
You my man are an 😇 ANGEL🙏🏽
That's crazy you mention Quartzsite. I plan to head there end of next week for my first DP coach. Reason why I'm watching your video on Servicing Pushers.
That's a holiday Rambler imperial, you know there's a fuel filter under the intake manifold that's a bear to get to,I hope you're changing that filter along with the coolant filter and are checking your coolant sca levels.
Yes I am, I don't change the filter by the pump Everytime but every other time, and I change the coolant every other year and the coolant filter !!
I’ve missed this style of content. Gained a sub too!
I'm glad you like it !!
I don't mind changing my own oil, the hardest thing about that job is getting rid of the old oil. Auto Zone and others always say their oil tanks are full, so they say. Great job$$
Buy your oil from Walmart, they take it back 5 gallons at a time !!
@@EconomicRefugeesRV That's good to know, I did not know Walmart took old oil...Thanks!!
Very informative!. Merry Christmas and safe travels.
You need to clean the flange before you put the new filter on!! Tighten the filter down as much as you can, then back it off several turns, then snug it down
All joking aside though this is six in a row gym again I would be afraid to jump in that motorhome and drive across country you look like you do very good maintenance and you seem like a pretty neat guy like I said I like my arms all products they work real good look into it
You have a better Tool Time then Tim Allen! I broke down and got Wendy a car after all these years of having Ford Escapes (we have had at least six).
Gorgeous video I never seen video filler battery 🔋 make sense
Thanks !!
What would be really helpful is if at the beginning of these videos, which I don't see enough, is Mention the motor brand, the Horse Power, the chassis, whether it's Diesel or gas and (I know you mention diesel in your title) and if it's a 5.9, 6.7, 8.9, 12K etc. It helps to know what I'm dealing with. Nice video. good luck. happy travels.
Thanks for the suggestion, I changed the title to reflect that info. Here's a bit more--2 valve, 8.3 Cummins, 300 hp.
Thanks for watching!
thanks , Hitting the road soon heading west.. See ya'll in Quartzsite
Great teacher. Thanks
I'm happy you found it helpful. 😊
That was fun. Good video
Very informative
Thanks for watching !!
This is the kind of stuff you need to know. I can't always pay the cost for service like that at places that can do motorhomes.I like to do my own. When I did go to places that could.I seen what I get for service at some high end place that was just unacceptable.
Very helpful!
(but good lord that dog is annoying)
Check your particular engines oil capacity before doing this. My cummins ism11 takes close to 40 quarts or 9 gallons. That 5 gal drain pan without a shut off style drain valve would be a big mess. Also some engines have 2 oil filters, primary and bypass so some extra oil for the second filter is required. Secondly: a hand pump that fits on the 1 gal container can be useful in hard to reach filler necks . It may be slower to pump but no mess. Oil Hand pumps are found in Wally world too or any automotive supplier. Lastly: some oil filters have an inner small rubber o ring, remove the old one and replace with the one provided with the new filter. Always wipe mounting surface clean and coat the rubber o rings both inner and outer with a light coat of engine oil. Keep a rag over the top of the prefilled filter before going under and remove cover rag as you install. It keeps grit which can fall from the underside as you bumbled your way under. 1/4 turn with tool after hand tight is recommended by most filter manufacturers. Run engine 5 min than stop and add to full mark. Happy motoring.
I do have a oil shut off valve !! And I have to bumble under the motorhome because I do my service work normally in campgrounds, just trying to help the average guy !!
Highly recommend when you fill the fuel filter never dump the fuel down the center put your finger over it and block that and dump it down the side because that’s the direction the fuels gonna go in and if there’s any debris some you may not see too small to see it’s got a try to go through the filter first or if you dump it down the middle straight to the pump Biden it’s not good it’s a six and a row jim again
Good video. I like working with my hands. But I don’t like getting my fingernails dirty.
Son of Dad - I use the 7mil nitrile disposable gloves from Harbor Freight. They are thick enough so they don’t tear if you happen to brush against something sharp. You get about 80 gloves for less than $10 - cheap fingernail insurance.
a cheap plastic tote that fits under engine is a good container to empty the oil
I highly recommend Amsoil 15 W 40 anyway you have a good day to Amsoil will keep your engine a lot cleaner inside because it doesn’t break down and cause a mess when your engine your new oil excuse me first thing is got to do is clean the crap the old oil left behind anyhow Amsler is good stuff my old Dodge with five 9/500,000 miles and I’ve been doing 35 and 40,000 miles oil change of course I have a bypass filter and that’s a big thing and I use Donaldson air filtration fact is my air filter is a DBA 5202 it’s the same filter element that they use on M1 Abrams tanks and it’s nominal it’s not the same filter put the filter element sofor that engine
Thanks for the video. We purchased a 2003 Monaco Windsor last year. I haven’t done an oil change yet. It looks like my 8.3 has two different oil caps. One in the front and one on top. Is that correct.
That's how mine is, I normally fill threw the front !! Windsor is a good motorhome and 2003 is a great year, just keep the chassis lubed !!
Good night geniuses I got questions for you again about the fluid DEF in motorhome 1998 I get American Egles 8.3 350 hp
Doesn't have DEF !!
The side bolt drains 5gallons the lower bolt drains the last gallon
The side bolt now has my oil temp sensor in it !!
Hi doing my friend my air bag suspension when empty the differential touch on frame
That can't be good !!
I purchased like that now I’m looking everywhere
I got question for you if buy 1998 American tradition motorhome 350 hp Cummins 110.0000 thousand miles look good before take road what you recommend to due something work like change old part for don’t brake in road
Do a major service, check wheel bearings, drive shaft, brakes, anything that rolls and tires, you can always have problems but checking things can save a lot of troubles !!
@@EconomicRefugeesRV thanks 🙏 thanks
Did you tighten the fuel filter ? better than finger tight ? Excellent video, great learning tutorial. Merry Xmas ,hope Santa has a gift for puppy :D
It's tight !
How come when you take off the old filter there's no oil come out?
That was a first on my oil filter, but it was the check valve failed !!
Looked good.. It would be good if u cut about 4 inches off the top big part of funnel
Do you change the oil every 10000 miles? We just buy 1998 American Eagle 350 hp but first oil change we scare to due second sure we
I do my oil change every 5000 miles.
Question for you coolant reservoir my is empty dry but radiator is full can you tell me something about this
Looks like crack dry but the level on side line level wher I can order one reservoir
You can fiberglass it to repair it (that's what I did) or you can buy a generic one online.
@@EconomicRefugeesRV good idea thanks
You're welcome!
I can use an battery distilled water for my battery 🔋 I have almost the someone motorhome 1998 American Eagle
Yes
All filters. All of them even trans fluid and filters....ALL FILTERS
I service the trans every 50k
You couldn't put the dog somewhere else for 30 minutes ???
He can open the pocket doors !!
Informative video but I don't understand people who can tolerate their yapping dogs' obnoxious barking. Worse, they don't understand that other people hate it, even if they don't. Neighborhoods full of them.
He was YAPPING because I was by the door and he usually hangs with me, sorry if that bothers you, maybe you should understand that this is real life and if that doesn't work for you, see you !!
How often do you change the oil (miles)
10,000 or less normally less !!
Do u write the dates and miles on the filters
No, I keep track of the mileage !!
What part of Arkansas.
South west
Holding 6 gallons
Sounds about right.
When you changed your fuel filter I noticed two spliced wires that did not have any shrink tubing on them - shame on you. LOL
